I think Aaron Pierre is great at expressing certain emotions with body language and energy. There’s a very small scene in “Rebel Ridge” that gave me the same vibe that you were talking about with his character.

Aaron Pierre has done an excellent job and gives John character depth that he hasn’t really had in any other medium. Also it’s pretty funny how many people are comparing John’s mother to Michael Jackson’s father and their desire to see their children succeed by any means. Also the way fear is being utilized by the ring and spoken about by the guardians has me questioning their intentions with the core in general because fear can’t be removed completely and we know the power is more about will than the lack of fear. Super excited for the next episode.

part of me? feels likes Hal is trying to “break” John… like making him finally be more off-kilter instead of the polished person her comes off as. - To also show the guardians he’s not so “perfect” like ALL the humans aren’t… in turn also showing them he’s not so different from himself (Hal) either. Maybe as a somewhat of an attempt to still maintain his legacy/perception with the guardians after his turn is up
