An update regarding Crystanima (Patreon)

Hey everyone ! I just posted the latest comission (Yuma) that was obtained through Crystanima, and it's now the perfect time to update you about this system... well in fact it's been long overdue, as since it's first been introduced in 2020 (here) the Crystanima system has never been updated or changed. This is mainly because it's stressful and hard to change something like this and I didn't know exactly what to do to be happy about it without hurting people who have been really supportive and stayed for so long and now have a lot of crystanima.

So it's going to be a bit long (TLDR at the end) but I want to explain a few things on cystanima and why it needs to change. The obvious thing is, right now, crystanimas are not really cool, and feels like "Oh Nice I have enough to get a spot on the list. Now I'll just wait for a super long time..."

I wanted it to be a reward for long time supporters, as they would accumulate this currency that they could then spend to get various things. But as it is right now, it fails on various points , and I failed at updating it sooner. The thing is I'm often working on my illustrations, and taking the time to rework Tiers for Patreon, or the crystanima system is not easy. But as some people have now obtained up so many points, it's urgent that I update you with a few things.First I want to say I love doing commissions, but only punctually, once in a while, and I will only keep appreciating that if it stays that way. If I feel like I have to do one or more per month I know I will not be happy with that.Right now the commission list is so long that doing one every other month will probably book me for the next 5 years, assuming no new sots are reserved...Obviously I could keep it like that, but I feel really bad about making some people wait for years to get their illustration of their favorite characters.But this is not the only issue. So I'll make a list.

Current issues with the Crystanima system

I don't do enough commissions to go through the list

No rewards for lower tier members even if they are long time supporters

Some rewards are not fun for me to do as I can't finish the illustration (Sketch and line art only)

So the next update will try to fix all these issues, by hopefully having something for everyone to look for, not having to wait a crazy amount of time to get your reward, and no fun rewards allowed... And a very important point, I don't want anyone to feel betrayed by the new system. This will of course be hard to do, and it's often impossible to please everyone, especially those who where close to get enough to finally reserve a slot, but ... right now reserving a slot means, waiting for 5 years... so I'm sure if that's your case you will appreciate a better system.As I'm still working on these reworks, I will ask you that please don't spend any crystanima, and don't reserve any more commission slots. 

Currently I'm thinking about

Adding new rewards, deleting a few or replacing them

Re-balancing the crystanima gain per month vs how much things costs and how long it takes for me to complete a reward.

Deleting the system completely... 😭

For those who already have commission slots reserved I will write a message to you really soon!

If you have ideas, feedback or suggestions, please tell me this could help a lot! I will try to have it ready for early next month !

TLDR

Crystanima will change soon as the system is not exciting for most people (lack of rewards or it takes super long for me to get to your comission), in the meantine please don't spen any of your points! Thanks

Honestly, I've been disheartened regarding a commission from you for the exact reason you mentioned. On the other hand, if commissions aren't really your thing, and you feel the need to space them out to keep your motivation up, that's fine and understandable, too. I haven't felt like I've been getting ripped off or anything, since the rewards I get at my current level are worthwhile on their own. The crystanima was just a nice bonus. Interested to see just what you'll come up with in the future. Thank you for taking the time to talk about your feelings on the matter. It is appreciated. Take care!

I really hope you keep the ability to get character commissions. I found your art a little while ago and fell in love with how gorgeous it was, knowing there would be a chance to have a character I love drawn in your style is a dream come true honestly.

to be candid, i keep forgetting to even check how much i have. i really haven't looked into the Crystanima system at all. so i won't become upset by any changes, hahaha.

I can't speak for others, but I was never really supporting for the Crystanima system. Ultimately, I just love your work and want you to continue making things you enjoy. Art's a really hard profession when it comes to burnout, since unlike most other fields, it can make it completely impossible to keep putting out work. I'm sure it's an extremely difficult decision, but I highly doubt any of your long term supporters would blame you for just axing the system entirely. You have to do what's best for your health and sanity. And, while it could be disappointing for some to not be able to get comms from you, if it's running you into the ground it's not sustainable. I would much rather see you happy and enjoying your work than burning out and quitting outright because you can't keep up with the workload. Your work's amazing, try not to be too hard on yourself about the situation!

I also supprt you for your art and the community! the Crysta is a nice addition and if i could make use of it somehow sooner, sure thats nice, but not the reason i am here! Also i am really glad you are adressing commissions and not try to brun yourself out with them. i feel that a lot Always stay as you are! ♥️

I definitely want to see the changes. I've felt like there's a few things that to me were strange (especially the amount for higher tiers) but as long as you keep space to yourself as well as commissions, I think it should be fine.

I am not surprised it was unsustainable. Approximately $800 (or about $500 for Guest Givers) for a commission from you seems low to me. Though, re-balancing the crystanima gain / costs might just delay the issue a few years, as I suspect your retention is high. If you do remove crystanima entirely, I would appreciate something as I was looking forward to the possibility of a commission. That said, your art is amazing and I've gotten more than enough without crystanima.

Appreciate the transparency! I've never really given much thought to my crystanima, so that's at least 1 more vote for "don't worry about it." A commission is an amazing perk, but no one wants to see you suffer over it. My first thought for lower perks with minimal effort for you, would be 1 time shop or Gumroad discounts. Similarly, maybe you can sign merch for people? My last idea, would be maybe some kind chibi comic strip? I would love to see your OCs interacting with each other. So crystanima could be used either to pitch the story/scenario, or decide which OCs should interact? Idk, just hoping chibis are low enough effort, but fun enough for you to do still. Best of luck on the rework. I'll still be a supporter. 🫡

Just a thought but what about using the crystanima to redeem different size discounts to your store or for higher amounts a free sticker or poster even.

I just woke up, so haven't put much thought into it, but here's a suggestion in the intern: make a place where the ideas can be collected, similar to the "suggestions" channel in the discord, that way you aren't inundated with comments and repeat suggestions! That said, it might be hard since there are hundreds of patreons who don't visit the discord

I have been wondering about this for quite awhile. The turnaround rate was unsustainable from the beginning. Looking at how it has been used, virtually nobody was selecting anything other than S or ?? rank. I always felt like the S rank was more of a bypass of the Waifu War, and a Waifu War character is done almost every month anyway. I am curious if the ?? rank is part of the problem. How much more effort is involved in making an OC over an existing character?

Yeah re-balancing is definately a part of it. And removing it would really be a big disapoitment for me and everyone who where looking forward to a comission, I hope the ideas I have and the feedback will create a better system

That's a great idea to look into. I just need to make a guess and evluate how much work it would be to handle all the special codes, and discounts and stuff. But it could work !

Yes, I had no idea how much people would stay for that long and be supporting me. I'm so grateful, but this system completely exploded because I didn't have any idea how this would go. Especially for highed tiers, I was really bad at predicting how incredible the support would get.

Entirely understandable to adjust the system. We will all still support what you do no matter what. Take the time you need and fix it to what makes you happy.

I was planning to use my Crystanima to have Dark Mitsu draw whatever she wanted when I had enough. So you would have one less commission to worry about.

Been here for a few years and TIL Crystanima exists Just here to support and enjoy all the the art you make You should draw whatever you are feeling for the month so it doesn't feel like a chore and then its gonna end up the best

Regarding the Crystamina system I aslo think that the the thing is flawed but there's no "perfect" system sadly. A good thing IMHO would be to add a "what would you like" with one or multiples answer with different cost of Crystamina associated for each categories (character, setings, clothes, animations for existing drawings, Dark Mitsu, other things) and you could add those to the patreon polls as you see fit each month (I'd love to spend my stams for more of your OCs!! :) ). At the end of the day the most important thing is how you feel about drawing something so do as you want and I'm sure It will be only to do the best ! Cheers!
