Hi everyone!

I know x-men is going to become more important with marvel and i’ve been hearing a lot of good things about x-men 97 and was thinking it could be a good natural replacement for invincible when we finish that.

HOWEVER. I dont know anything about x-men and wanted to check in with yall. Is there a good foundation to start with? I’ve heard iffy things about the movies but I also can’t imagine myself watching the series without at least watching ONE movie?

Let me know your thoughts and advice! Thanks!

The movies are fantastic. Some really high highs and low lows. I’ld recommend Edit: I change my mind. Forget the movies and so many channels have reacted to the movies. You should definitely check the show from the 90s instead. The themes they touch on and the art are peak. Truly.

Personally I know the X-men from the comics and the 90's animated series, this X-men 97 is an direct succesor of this 90's series. But I have no idea if this is the best start and if you can still find it. Maybe someone else has better ideas, I know the movies but they are in a different realm imo.

Narutoanime16

The movies are fine but 97 is its own thing it’s a sequel to the 90’s cartoon series . The movies are good but they keep using Wolverine as the main character lol when he’s not it’s the whole damn team . I’m watching the original show & it’s so fun it’s like Batman the animated series how good it is and 97 is even better. Now you don’t have to watch the original show to enjoy 97 but you’ll be confused if you don’t know the lore of the original show. The movies give you a rough draft but the characters least when it comes to some of the X-men are handled sooo much better and have better development than the movies do. I’d be down to see you watch the Animated series & 97 it’s all on Disney plus ^^

George Baxter

The films sure. The 97 series is a deep dive that won’t necessarily prove relevant to Marvel going forward. Its good but I think harder for someone to get into who doesn’t have the nostalgia for the original

PropheticSage

The early movies are pretty solid imo however a complete different continuity to the cartoon so one doesn't necessitate the other Disney did make a little catch up video that's on YouTube if you want to just jump into the cartoon

Donald Woods

I think at least watching the first X-men movie would be a good foundation.

DeathSwitch

I think there are 10+ movies in the X-Men franchise and there is only 2 that are looked at as kinda meh, but even then... They'll be good to see reactions to 😅 movies are generally fantastic

Leo Cannot Park

The first 3 X-Men movies are a nice, contained trilogy. Definitely worth a watch.

Saul

The first movie is the best entry point honestly. If you want more then you can keep going from there. I used to love the animated 90s series back when I was a kid. It was more colorful and straight out of the comics. X-Men Evolution is the better animated show that places the X-Men in a High School setting while exploring the same themes and new storylines.

GomezAddams

Well, since you're going to be working your way through the movies (?) following the chronological order will in my opinion start slowly and introduce more of the mutant story and establish the canon in a way that slowly builds until you'll be fully informed on more and more of each character's abilities and history as you go through the movies. Of course these movies were made over the course of several years, so there will be slight restarts, actor changes, and a lot of character info that shifts as you go along, but there's nothing you'll miss knowing as you watch each movie that will prevent you from fully enjoying it, them. 🙃

Narutoanime16

I love X-men evolution but since I started rewatching the 90’s I forgot all the crazy shit that happened 😂man did you rewatch S2 and 3 ?! All the time travel, Rogue & Cyclops history & Mystique gets around she got 3 kids lol

Narutoanime16

She’ll get more out of the cartoon than the movies the movies are fun but they keep focusing on Wolverine all the damn time

Tony Beltran

yea if you just want to watch one movie, then I'd say to watch the first one from 2000 just to understand the basic stuff

Saul

Time travel was crazy awesome. Mystique in Evolution and her relationships are perfect.

Vedsång

Agree, after growing up with the comics and the cartoons the movies where not my cup of tea. And I also agree the focus a lot on Wolverine but maybe the future Disney content will do the same, I don't know yet.

niall no chill

I never watched the original X Men tv show from the 90’s. I just jumped into 97 and have been loving it. As long as you know the basics, they sort of fill you in along the way :)

emmereacts

So the show wont spoil anything in the movies after or its unimportant?

Corthos Entertainment

Why not watch the X-men cartoon from the 90's? It's the precursor to X-Men 97 and it's a pretty decent cartoon to introduce you to the characters. I watched that cartoon when I was 10 and it was my introduction to the x-men in the first place, and why I love the x-men to this day! it's all on disney+ :)

Tony Beltran

🤔 tbh I'm not sure, I'm not caught up in xmen 97

Joe

You can do either because they are unrelated but the x men movies as a whole are definitely worth watching. Plus you will understand characters much better if you watch X-men 97. There are some great movies in that series and a couple duds. But I think you would enjoy overall.

Steve Graham

Questions are : Do you like super heroes movies? Do you like character development? No matter what people said if it's good or bad, in the end it's your choice and your experience. Lots of reactors listened to comments and were not sure if they should do it. All of them loved it. Just stick with release order like the MCU and everything will be fine. Last thing... Yes, the timeline is messed up but I think you'll like them.

Tithann

X-Men 97 is awesome so far. The movies vary in quality from great (Logan and both Deadpool if you consider those as part of the X-men movies) to very forgettable ( X-Men the last stand and Wolverine:origins), bit the ensemble is still worh watching. If you want to see X-Men 97 and you should, it’s a continuation from the tv show from the 90’s, so I would advise you to find a video on youtube (there are lots of them) that sumarises that show.

Ewasabi316

X-Men 97 is great definatly watch the series if you like maybe watch the orignal or start the movies i say

minuteforce

"X-Men" is a LOT to get into, so I understand treading carefully. "X-Men '97" is a continuation of "X-Men: The Animated Series" from the 90s (hence the title) and that animated universe is separate to the MCU and the "X-Men" live-action films, so it's not strictly necessary for MCU purposes

5Myllyon

Separate universe from the movies so it won’t spoil.

Some Worm Guy

I would suggest either starting with the original animated series from the 90s, or if you don't want to take that much time start with the first two movies. The new animated series is good but it starts off at kind of weird place for someone not familiar with Xmen.

David D

If you count Deadpool and New Mutants (does anyone count NM?) there are 13 movies. 4 are good, 2-3 are great, and the rest are meh to just plain bad. IMO they're worth watching for the good ones, but you'll have to wade through some muck (or skip, which will probably enrage some viewers). Some people say you have to watch the X-Men movies for Deadpool, but that's way over the top, there's only a slight connection. You could read a short paragraph from a Wiki and get everything you need to know.

Rex Prime

If anyone has some *cough* advanced knowledge *cough* about Deadpool and Wolverine, you may be able to find out which ones are important to get the most references / Easter eggs... That movie will effectively wrap up everything we've seen and setup everything going forward...in other words, the X-Men that will appear in that are the only ones that "matter." I was never a big enough X-Men fan to know which ones those are based on the trailers but perhaps somebody else knows?

Frisky Dingo

Please watch the movies. That's all.

Ian Forbes

Like most have said, the animated stuff is separate and you can either watch the 90s or get a summary, then jump right into ‘97. Which has been good thus far. I do think the first X-Men film is a decent primer for the basics and X2, the Deadpool films, and Logan (all done in release order) are well worth seeing. I personally will never watch any of the other X-films as I think they’re awful but that’s a personal opinion based on attachment to the comics (though some of it is based on an appreciation for good scripts and direction which I think are lacking, or at best average, in the other films). But everyone’s mileage varies and you should react to what feels right to you.

John Small

Watch the first two X-Men movies - in release order - then decide if you want to continue.

nervouspirate

X-men & X2 do a great job of introducing the concept and serve as the foundation to all the other ones. Then I think you really only gotta watch X-men First Class and Days of Future Past.Wolverine and Deadpool have their own sets of movies too, but you can cross that road when you get to it.

Marshall Bourbon

If you're gonna do xmen animated series, us nerds could probably make a watch list of necessary episodes so you don't have to watch them all to get into xmen97

Jonathan Giles

Should watch the important animated episodes. Then the 97 show. Then watch the movies

LittleGalaxyBoy

I do recommend at least watching one X-Men film so you have a basic understanding of the world and characters. X-Men (2000) would be a good starting point but I see nothing wrong with watching X-Men 97 by itself. You already know the basics of the Marvel universe and X-Men 97 exists within a world with The Avengers, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, etc. Closer to that of the comics so you already know more than you may think. X-Men 97 does an amazing job at filling you in on certain events without feeling like it's talking directly to the audience. So for people going into the show with zero insight into X-Men in general it does a good job at keeping it friendly for new fans. Marvel now owns the rights to the X-Men so they'll be important moving forward. Deadpool and Wolverine (2024) will officially be the first X-Men related MCU project while X-Men 97 is connected to the MCU by the Multiverse, also a product of Marvel Studio/Animation. So regardless you'll meet the X-Men down the line soon with the direction Marvel is going at the moment. It would be handy to watch X-Men (2000) even if you don't plan on watching the show. X-Men 97 is just the best depiction of these characters outside of the comics so that's why everyone's been highly recommending it over the films. It's also just a damn good show so you'll love it.

LittleGalaxyBoy

Nothing will be spoiled for the films thanks to X-Men 97 being set in it's own continuity. So don't worry about the show spoiling the films as there both VERY differant.

Narutoanime16

I love the Cable 2 parter, Bishops introduction & then the whole Phoenix saga. I’m going through the show with my dad as we watch 97 & it’s fun

Danidelionfluff

Even thought it's in a different continuity, i would say it kinda ruins the Dark Phoenix movies.
