I'm so glad it stayed a surprise because it's such an epic moment of WAIT WHAT. What a reveal. This episode overall is so good. "Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many" hits so hard. The dialogue overall is top tier. Also, so many good side characters were brought back. A+. And yes, this was a mid-season "finale" before a summer break. This episode makes me think of an episode of classic who where the third doctor lands in the middle of a conflict and helps a group of people fight off the bad guys. He delivers a dire warning at the end about how they should frame the conflict narrative. Doctor: "When you all get back to [your home planet], you'll all be national heroes. Everybody will want to hear about your adventures." Character: "Of course." Doctor: "So be careful how you tell that story, will you? Don't glamorize it. Don't make war sound like an exciting and thrilling game." Character: "I understand." Doctor: "Tell them about the members of your mission that will not be returning. Tell them about the fear. Otherwise your people might relish the idea of war. We don't want that." That's a far cry from the "dark legend" that wants the story circulated by Colonel Runaway about what happens when you mess with the Doctor. I love when River lays into the doctor about the consequences of his flashy behavior. Eleven may be well intentioned but he does tend to travel at a higher decibel, though subtlety is rarely a strong suit for the doctor in general lol. Also, you may not remember but when we meet River in the library two-parter she mentions "Now my Doctor, I've seen whole armies turn and run away. And he'd just swagger off, back to his TARDIS." Cool that they brought that full circle!

What a Birthday present for me.🍾 🥳 🎉 🪅 The revelation of series 6. It's perhaps hard to believe, but I guessed who she 'might' be at the end of episode 2 of this series. I had no clear idea how it would all fit together, and it was only a calculated supposition based on selective conclusions from S5E04 onwards. It was also based on the principle of, what would I write, if it were me. The thing with River is, it's never totally clear from what point in her timeline, each encounter could be happening from her perspective. The degree of secrecy she has had to maintain, means there's always the possibility she's not being as truthful or forthcoming as it would appear. By this I only mean, when she pretends to know or not know certain details. Because, spoilers, lol. How far along in her timeline, is she at, when each encounter is happening for her, can be very hard to work out on the face of it. If we can only base it on what she says at the time of each meeting. 🤔😂

River mentioned at the beginning of the episode that it was HER BIRTHDAY! Also when in the time of Angels S5E4/5 we're told that River is in prison for killing a man, a good man. Also we know that River can regenerate because we saw Amy's daughter in the first 2 episodes of the current series in the children's home that's why she had pictures of her mum and then she regenerated at the end

My second favorite episode, after 'Vincent and The Doctor'.. and it always tugs on the strings. So glad you're having fun with the episodes and really enjoy your reactions!

It's one of the best reveals of anything ever lol I don't think I've ever seen anyone get it before she picks up the prayer leaf, I certainly didn't! And what's great about it is that when you rewatch you'll see a bunch of clues and you'll be like 'Ohhhhh now I see them' lol Even the surnames...Pond and River...how do we not connect these! lol Interesting facts about the secrecy behind the reveal: ''Moffat kept the River Song identity a top secret, even from lead actors Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill. The script read at the read-through had a false ending, and only a select few were issued the real script. Moffat informed actor Alex Kingston of the secrets of her character at the end of the previous series and she was not allowed to tell anyone.''
