Its a bit messy this one, and Gaiman has fallen out of favour since revelations of his private life have surfaced which doesnt help. But its main issue was not his fault. He was given the brief when the idea was it would be Victorian Clara, and the two children she was nanny to. This was one of the scripts that needed extensive rewrites after the change to contemporary Clara, and also explains the rather shoehorned in ending of the last episode when the kids randomly discover a bunch of historic photos of Clara we never saw anyone take just lying around at their school. That was necessary as rewriting Gaimans script to remove the Victorian children completely was too much work, so they just substituted them with thee modern kids, a bit clumsily. Another clue is Clara, if you pay close attention to her dialogue it is the faster paced, more clipped style of Victorian Clara, which poor Jenna cant help but occasionally fall back into given its rythmns. Not as bad as some seem to think, but coming after his debut episode of The Doctor's Wife, its a good bit below that bar, more middle of the road Who than memorable classic.

Matt Smith was acting so well in this season , the range is absolutely insane ... seeing how he reacts to Amy, his anger during rings of Akaten, and then this whole episode just being a masterclass

A non spoiler note for watch order for these next few episodes: s7ep13 (of course lol) , Name of the Doctor special, Night of The Doctor (mini episode) , Day of the Doctor, then Time of the Doctor

Coming from someone who accidentally watched out of order rhe first time because the " x of the Doctor" names were blending together
