Oh wow "2017 christmas special" just aged me horrifically, felt like this was only half that old omg

Capaldi is a master of monologs , the be kind part is so heartwarming

A beautiful send off to 12, and we enter a new era! The Doctor is a woman now, and Chris Chibnall is the showrunner!

The characterisation of the 1st Doctor was very off to the point of childish character assassination; the original First Doctor was not sexist, but of his time and not as bad as you think. There was a bit of outrage over this portrayal, even if it was supposed to be a joke, with the writer/showrunner really jokingly criticising 1960s television as a whole rather than the 1st Doctor as a way to say 'look how far we progressed'... without thinking of the implications for the character, the jolly good spanked bottom lie was a reuse of somthing the first doctor had said in a classic story, but totally taken out of contect, his Grandaughter was climbing around and neary crushed the Tardis and everyone when an old bridge fell on them and rendered the Tardiss inexessable, basically he was parantaning in his old fasioned way and even then, he showed restaint... the original William Hartnell 1st Doctor was actually pretty cool, even if he was tthe 'grumpy one' at times.

As the writing for the next doctor is off which I feel so bad saying, her personality shines very brightly, and the next writers really get back into a nice groove

That Doctor of War moment must have been so hard for the first Doctor to see, thinking you were a man of peace who goes out into the universe to help people only to see what you cause, reminds me of a Good man goes to War where that one group of people use the word Doctor for warrior & River asking him is this what you thought you would become ? When I first saw this episode I wasn't that keen on it because I felt it was anticlimactic and a bit mid for Capaldi's last episode but I changed my view of it when I think of The Doctor Falls as the climax & this as his swansong. At the end of his run I was in the same place as you with Tennant as number 1 and Capaldi as second but after a rewatch of his era, he became my favourite with Clara my favourite companion & it was great to see her in this episode. Onto a new era, you are right the seasons are not as strong but there are still some gems in there and good companion dynamics P.s great reaction

I cried with you

Peter Capaldi is my favorite doctor by far. This episode always makes me cry. ALSO Jodie’s era isn’t as bad as I think the internet wants/claims it to be. I know you said it already, but don’t let that cloud your judgement/enjoyment of her run. It’s a fun time, I hope you enjoy it ♥️

CloudSSj4

I agree on Jodie's era. I liked very much her portrayal of The Doctor, but I have to admit that oftentimes the writing was quite weak; not to mention a massive canon break. That said, the 60th "specials" and Gatwa's era are so shite that the writing of Jodie's era feels like as if it were penned by Shakespeare.

LFCGirl85

Jodies era perhaps doesn't hit the same heights as previous ones, but there's still plenty to appreciate in there. Jodie does a good job and hopefully you will still enjoy it.

The first Doctor's final story before regenerating was The Tenth Planet, which was the first appearance of... the Cybermen!

The Doctor of War sequence is one of my favorite moments in the entire show. David Bradley, older than Peter Capaldi, playing the younger 1st Doctor: curious and wanting to explore and learn everything about the universe, looking up wide-eyed like a scared child at Peter Capaldi, younger than Bradley, playing the much older 12th Doctor: the man that fought in and single-handedly won the Time War, committing and reversing a double genocide, with all of that history written on his face in one singular, angry expression. I don't know that any other show could ever pull that off (I'm sure there's at least one out there somewhere), but Doctor Who does it effortlessly. Also Moffat speaking through Bill describing basically the ethos of the entire show and 1 saying "well that would be a nice story, wouldn't it" and Bill replying with "yeah, that would be the best" Is just wonderful because yeah, Doctor Who kicks ass. Moffat went out with a bang.

As far as I remember, next season is still good and fun, after that it goes downhill unfortunately.

Absolutely agreed. Loved this episode, but they really did the First doctor dirty. Someone made a fan-edit of this episode that removes all his badly written lines and it flows much nicer. None of the classic Doctors were anything like it, don't let it discourage you from trying to watch the classic episodes. Every single doctor from 1-12 were wonderful people.

charlieh65

The 60th specials could've been amazing, but all of them literally fumbled the second half of the episode, everything after series 10 is mess.

charlieh65

If you want more 10th, 11th and 12th scenes there are a few episodes of the Sarah Jane show and Class, atleast well worth watching on youtube. Some really good material there. Also this youtube tribute to the first 12 doctors I found ages ago: https://youtu.be/htrrY85jYhI , it does a great job of showcasing all the classic and new doctors and has no spoilers for the new doctors after 12. A great way to get a glimpse into how the classic doctors were.

I recently finished a rewatch of S11 onwards and I’d actually say it felt the opposite to me. S11 was patchy but it got into a nice groove from S12.

DMSC Timo März

It’s not necessarily about the individual episode but about the destruction and retconning, maybe not in S12, but definitely in S13.

Drake

christmas miracle is a true story this was the last time it happened in a war, the officers in ww1 made sure it never happens again

Drake

female doctor isnt even the big change, the showrunner changes no more moffat, and i think the whole tonal change is the bigger change

Drake

i think jodie is one of the most talentes actresses and i like her very much, i still dont like this seasons coming up ... and its not her fault. the new showrunner failed her which is why he changed again so fast and so "drastic". as well as some of the writings are just bad. she deserved better material to work with, i imagine her under moffat would have shined

charlieh65

Also no more Murray Gold, that was a huge loss for them

AVFCkirk

Still my favourite episode of dr who to date, and honestly my favourite Xmas themed media. Capaldis speech and music at the end never fails to get me.

Stephen Ray

Yes, the writing gets inconsistent beyond here, but series 9 and 10 were nearly perfect. It could only go down from there. Having said that, there are a lot of episodes that I loved coming up.

Stephen Ray

Jodie was a great Doctor. There's some really good episodes coming up.

emmereacts

that's honestly a really good way to put it in comparison to series 9 and 10
