Lee Gannon

In the Big Finish audios Mary Shelley becomes a companion to the Eighth Doctor.

I like in this era they find new ways to use classic villains, so the darlek being that giant squid thing last season and now a lone like half complete cyberman instead of the 'standard' ones, I enjoyed the new ways they brought these back. And yeah a great mix of a horror story with some cyber tech thrown in, very cool episode. And man did Ryan get told off or what my word lol Jodie scorned him proper lol Jodie was great at it too! Like you mentioned with Capaldi as he was more harsh like that I assumed they didn't want to use that style as much this era but it was a great moment though (except for Ryan lol) And when you read Frankenstein in school did they teach you that the idea came from the author seeing a Cyberman? :p

That enraged, passionate zealot Cyberman Ashad is terrifying. I like the theme that Akinola wrote for him, too. It's as relentless as Ashad is.

On the one hand, I like the association of the Doctor with the line from Lord Byron's poem: "She was the Universe." That is the sort of grandness we like to attribute to the Doctor! On the other hand, well, the poem it's from is called "Darkness," and that's who "She" is in the poem. The poem is a nightmare Byron had (or so the poem claims) and it is so bleak! Death and more death and famine until "The world was void." "The winds were wither'd in the stagnant air, / And the clouds perish'd: Darkness had no need / Of aid from them---She was the Universe." As I read the poem, Darkness doesn't need help from the winds or anything because it has grown to be universal: Darkness is everywhere. I guess we heard way back in "Rose" that the Doctor's constant companion is death, but I really like the Doctor described in the Tsuranga Conundrum. Mabli wonders what the Doctor is actually a Doctor of, and the Doctor replies: "Medicine, science, engineering. Candy floss, Lego, Philosophy, Music. Problems, people. Hope. Mostly hope." I guess not even 13 can be a ray of sunshine all the time.

As it still happens so rarely, maybe we should note that this episode of Doctor Who is both written and directed by women.
