This episode is based on a 1980 Doctor Who Weekly (published by Marvel UK) strip starring the fourth Doctor and featured the first ever black companion (in any medium) called Sharon Davies. It was also adapted into a audio play by Big Finish in 2019.

We are SO back baby! You're right about the other creature from Amy's time being similar. It was called "the star whale" aka "the beast below" - so similar. It's a whole fresh face to the show! With that Disney money baby. Excited to continue the journey with you!

Rose was only born as a plot point so Donna could have her arc reversed. Male presenting timelords wouldn't understand. The Doctor had literally just been a female.

So yeah the change in the title sequence and Tardis is that Disney money coming in, it's also why I think you get that Whoiverse intro as well. But yeah RTD came back and with Ten and Donna everyone just slipped back in and away we go! I think the whole binary non binary thing was a really good way of resolving the meta crisis thing and just a really fun episode. Meep! Also do you know why we have these specials btw? The timing of it etc? Sure you've seen why but thought it's worth asking just in case.

D Scott Howard

The voice of The Meep is Miriam Margolyes, a popular actress/comedienne who is still active in 2026 at age 85. (First appearance in 1965) She also plays Professor Sprout in H.P. I recommend checking out her appearances on The Graham Norton Show (there's a "best of"}.

Binary non binary? Who was non binary?

So something you can check out is a youtube channel 'How I Filmed This - Rachel Talalay' She directed Heaven Sent and the Capaldi finales as well as Star Beast, and there's some interesting videos she's done if you want to get nerdy about how parts of it all were filmed. https://www.youtube.com/@howifilmedthis-racheltalalay/videos

That intro bit, "Once Upon a Time Lord," was added to the episode and was not directed by Rachel Talalay. All the info it gives is already in the episode and much more effectively, but I guess Disney thinks people are really stupid? I love Murray Gold's music when Moffat was show runner, but in this episode it just bugs me -- it's trying so hard to be constantly symphonic and orchestral by using what sounds like one musical cliche after another. Like the musical version of the Disney-added intro? I really enjoy Tennant as 14, especially in the subtle ways 14 seems different from 10, a Doctor with more openness, experience, and self-awareness.

emmereacts

this sounds like an unfair criticism when most things in doctor who exist as a plot point, honestly

emmereacts

no not sure what you mean by the timing so you can tell me!

emmereacts

oh amazing! wouldnt have guessed that

Martin

Ah cool so yeah these specials were for the 60th anniversary! So for the 50th you had that special episode and this time around they did these episodes when for when Doctor Who turned 60 🥳 So when it comes to the 70th anniversary expect David to reappear! 👀

Adrian Lee

I also recently discovered that Miriam Margolyes was also the voice of Fly in the Babe films, she voiced The Matchmaker in Mulan from 1998, and was The Nurse in 1996 Romeo and Juliet.

The three specials were actually made pre-disney money but that's exactly why there were only three! Disney provided the cash to make full seasons with the same production value

Martin

Ah interesting, I assumed that cool new intro was all for the new era!
