When you said you weren't a musical fan in the Christmas Special reaction I knew this one was gonna be funny. I personally am a big fan of musicals so this episode was made for me. Although I actually didn't care too much for the song at the end, I liked the dance though. I enjoyed how much of this episodes style, set design and cinematography was influenced by movie musicals. It made it feel kind of larger than life in a lot of ways. It also felt like something Doctor Who had never done before. Plus Maestro was a lot of fun.

If it helps, when they opened up the series with Space Babies and the Devil's Chord I was gutted and I thought it was all going to be terrible, but there are absolutely some brilliant episodes to come.

I absolutely love musicals. But can understand how jarring it can be in a medium that never has musical numbers. Maybe this Doctor is just more sing songy.

The Cilla that we saw here, was Cilla Black: she started out as a singer in the 60s, and was friends with the Beatles. Later on, she moved into acting and presenting, but is predominately known for the latter: she became an absolute mainstay on British television for decades, until her death about 10 years ago. Not sure if she, or her music, really made it to America, so I think she’s probably unknown over there. As for the episode, I personally like musicals, so that aspect didn’t especially bother me: I just feel like they rather wasted a great villain, with bags of potential, on a fairly average storyline/plot. I remember thinking I liked this episode far more than I actually do, ‘cause I really loved the performance of Jinkx Monsoon as Maestro: but looking back on it, it’s kind of just “meh”, and fails to live up to its fantastic villain. It’s also a bit “wiggy” due to those dead creatures the Beatles are wearing as hairpieces: I wasn’t a big fan of the impressions the actors were doing either, as they came off a little bad cosplay-y, or like dodgy Beatles tribute act…not to be too harsh on them haha. It just felt a little like “tryout night at the Amateur Dramatics Society”, rather than an actual attempt to portray the Beatles: and I’m a huge theatre fan myself, and I love a bit of “Am-Dram”; but this felt just a bit bland, like they weren’t really trying very hard…I don’t like to be mean, but it just comes out sometimes haha. So yeah, a great villain, let down by boring/meh storyline, is the best way to describe this for me: but you can’t strike gold with every episode, and there were still aspects of this show that I liked, such as the villain, and the wardrobe choices for the Doctor and Ruby; the costume department, really hits it out of the park, for this incarnation of the show. I’m looking forward to the next few episodes: I think there are some really great ones coming up…well, unless my memory is playing tricks on me again haha. Hope you have a terrific week. xx

Yeahhhhh I wasn’t a huge fan of the musical vibe either. It’s definitely very Disney. This whole season just sadly didn’t really feel like doctor who to me. I’m still enjoying watching your reactions though!
