I really loved this episode although I think Maestro could have been toned down in a few places. I like the little nods to the classic series with the first Doctor and Susan in the pilot episode and the scene with the Doctor taking Ruby to a devastated future is similar to a scene with the fourth Doctor with Sarah Jane. As for the musical number. I like it but I think it would have just worked better as an add on after the actual story finished and that's how I kind of view it.

after this episode they kind of mostly gave up on the musical aspect that they were trying to lean into. there was supposed to be a song in space babies called push the button but their confidence in "musical doctor who" i dont think was very high, which tbh im not complaining about. but what else were we expecting disney to do with doctor who lol

i was also a theater kid all through high school, and i also unfortunately never liked musicals. i think when disney got dw they wanted to make this a thing but no one really liked it and there really arent any other "musical" numbers like this in the rest of the gatwa era. i think they realized itd be way too hard to keep writing them into episodes lol

As someone with a bass in their background I’m surprised you didn’t like the musical elements Emme 😏 lol I like this one personally, think it’s a cool premise and episode, but I do understand why the song elements aren’t for everyone and how it could take some shine off, but can we at least appreciate Ncuti’s blue suit and Afro! Doctor has never looked so cool!! 😎 (Goes to dance himself out but stops before Emme throws something at him) alright no music we get it! 😉 lol

I like musicals so that aspect of the episode didn't bother me at all (and really, there's only one actual musical number in it, so I don't think that really makes this a "musical episode", it's more just a story about the concept of music in general). I suppose the plot is pretty thin overall but Maestro is so much fun I really didn't mind personally. I think you overestimate Disney's influence on the series, while they were funding it at this point I don't think they had much input on the content of the show itself, I imagine if they had there's a lot of stuff they would have objected to. The change in tone is really, I think, mostly due to Russel T. Davies being back as showrunner and him being a lot more bold in this run than he was in his original one i.e. more queer representation, more outlandish and fantastical elements, musical numbers etc.
