The black goo was a portal to a hellish dimension, kind of like the Hellmouth could be, or like the one that Angel was opening at the end of season 2, but smaller scale. That place wasn't just underground in the city.

The blood bank might not be fully informed, they could have just been told that healthy people were needed for physically demanding jobs, they might think they were doing something good for the homeless.

The tracking shot at the school at the beginning of the episode is one of my favorite scenes of the series. A single take 3 minutes long, 9 actors 11 interactions, and dozens of extras. A single mistake and they have to do it all again. Then it cuts to Buffy, trying to eat spaghetti from the can and failing. A portrait of depression. They were in a Hell dimension where time moves faster.

This is a really strong opening episode to a new season; it did a great job of giving any new viewers a brief rundown of what the show is all about, while also being just a good story. If you don’t remember Lily all that well, she was in the season 2 episode where Buffy’s old friend came to Sunnydale; he was dying & made a deal with Spike to turn him into a vampire, in exchange for luring Buffy into a trap. She wasn’t a huge part of that whole story, but it was a nice little callback; it also gave the episode a believable connection to Sunnydale, & helped Buffy remember who she’d been before she was Anne. I think the actress, that played Lily, had been in the running to play Buffy, if my memory serves me correctly; which seems weird, as it’s almost impossible to imagine anyone else in the role. I know, Kristy Swanson played Buffy in that cheese-tastic prequel movie; but that was a bit all over the place, & to me, Sarah Michelle Gellar will always be the one true Buffy…even though she was the second one haha. As someone else mentioned, that place with all the forges, wasn’t underground, it was a different dimension, controlled by demons; the black goo that they fell through, was a portal to the dimension, kind of like what Angel opened at the end of last season, that Buffy could only close by killing him. I’m not sure if Buffy closed this portal by killing Ken, or if the rest of the demons shut it, so no one else could either enter (like Buffy had), or escape; it’s not really made clear, how/why the portal closed, but it’s probably one of those reasons haha. There are some fantastic lines/moments in this episode; it’s a really good showcase of what BTVS is all about. I’m really looking forward to you getting further into season 3; I think it’s generally considered, by the fans, to be one of the very best seasons of the show, & there are some amazing episodes on there way. I decided I couldn’t wait for the multi-episode edit, so I hunted out my Buffy collection, for the full reaction; and I’m so glad I did, as I really like this episode, & this was an excellent video. Hope you’re having a great week. 👍😀 All the best. x

Yeah, if Season 2 was a massive leap forward from Season 1, Season 3 goes even further; it kind of feels that the show fully establishes itself, and is more surefooted with its world and characters. I suppose by the time Season 3 started, the show already had 34 episodes; back in the late 90s/early 2000s, that didn’t feel like a lot, but now most shows don’t even get to that number, & if they do, it takes them 3-5 years to do it haha. And I can’t wait for you to see all the joys of Season 3 that are coming up. I’m so glad I found my Buffy collection, so I can watch along with the full episodes; I really love your reactions to the show, and how much of a kick you’re getting out of everything, from the plots, to the late 90s/early 2000s fashion. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug, and BTVS is one of the top suppliers of it haha. I also really love hearing your thoughts- both on Buffy and other films & TV shows; not only are your reactions always incredibly funny and enjoyable, you always have very interesting perspectives on the things you watch. I’m really looking forward to your next Buffy videos, and whatever else is coming up; I hope you’ve had a great week, & that you have a fun weekend, too. 👍😀 All the best. x
