Kilgrave's parents left a confused 10-year old with superpowers to fend for himself. They more or less unleashed him on the world knowing that he was struggling with his power, as any child whose every word becomes a command would, and was liable to abuse it to survive. I think very, very few people could grow up with that kind of power, no parental guidance and no real way to connect with other people -because everyone always does what you say- and not become a monster. Not to mention all the mental trauma from the fear and physical pain he endured through his parent's experiments. I love a villain with a compelling backstory, and Kilgrave's really delivers. What you said about feeling sorry for the child but not the adult is interesting. I think we as humans want to think of people who do awful things as monsters, as something other than ourselves -because heavens forbid we would be capable of such things- and reconciling that monster with the kid they once were gives us discomfort, so we try to separate the two in our minds. I also think trying to put the two together and feel some empathy -not sympathy- for the horrible adult that child becomes can be a good thing because it acknowledges the insane complexity of what makes a person who they are, instead of just labeling them as one single trait. Anyway, great show, lovely reaction.
