Guys! I'm interviewing Geo Rutherford about spooky lakes! You've been requesting an episode with Geo for YEARS ever since her videos blew up on TikTok and Instagram. She's the perfect guest for a Spooktober episode. IYKYK.

Geo studies lakes that are mysterious due to natural phenomena and scientific oddities (rather than conspiracy theories or the supernatural). For instance:

Lake Maracaibo (Venezuela) experiences nearly constant lightning strikes -- up to 28 strikes per minute

Lake Natron (Tanzania) is a hot, blood red lake so caustic it petrifies animals that die in it

Lake Karachay (Russia) was a dumping ground for nuclear waste in the 1950s, making its radioactivity comparable to the Chernobyl disaster

Leave your questions for Geo in the comments! And let me know if you're a first time question asker (FTQA).

Deadline: Monday, September 22 at 5pm PST

Aubrey Nelson

Um yes hello! So excited for this! What is Geo’s absolute favorite spooky lake?

Marta Barnez

YESSSSSSSSSSS (will have questions later but for now) YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS

Matt Hirschl

Would lake hillier in Australia count as spooky? It’s pink! Whyyyyy

RJ Doidge

How….why does it work this way?!

Jeffrey Bradshaw

I think all artificial lakes are spooky. Thoughts?

Elinor Wahl

Lake Baikal has a lot of unique features, including species that don't exist anywhere else - what has Geo learned about that?

Sabrina

Clear lake, CA! There’s this massive die off of fish all summer and then there was mercury being mined nearby that maybe also leeched into the lake and then there’s a rumor about some foreign company wanting to buy the invasive algae? Help what’s happening 😂

Nicky G

GEOOOOOOO! 🤩 What came first - your love of creating art or your love of creepy bodies of water? Cant wait to get my Spooky Lakes Coloring Book!

Clare Davis

IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS DAY FOR THREE YEARS!

haille ragusa

UM I’m sorry, what exactly would be swimming under me if I were to go in?

RG

Geo! Oh my gosh we’re HUGE fans (from WI). Will you ever travel to Lake Baikal? What’s your bucket list lake?

Julian

My partner asks: Is it true that sound can travel across a lake under certain conditions?

molly

Are there any strange or unique occurrences in Lake Michigan? The carp always freak me out ngl

Turner Pierce

Omg!! Geo!! What happens to towns that get flooded to make lakes? Does that cause any weird happenings with lakes that are observable? Does the flooding destroy the houses or are they just sitting there under the lake? Are man made lakes spookier or do naturally occurring lakes have a greater incidence of spooky happenings?

Bobby Baldocchi

Um yes hello I am so excited for this episode! Has anyone ever figured out how deep devils hole is? (Home of the devils hole pupfish I’m not being crass I swear) And are there other similarly spooky caverns you know of?

Lizzy Martinez

Is Geo familiar with a small spooky lake in northern Nevada called Pyramid Lake? The tale is that people drown in it because of the lake being cursed due to terrible events that happened in/near it with Native American tribes.

Kathleen

Geo!!!!!! Yes!!!!!! Question: do certain spooky lakes have similar ecosystems or creatures that live specific to that lake

taylor

I want to know what the strangest or most unique property of a lake that you’ve come across. I can’t wait to hear this episode!

Lisa Gorman

Does the Great Salt Lake count as a spooky lake? Because it seems pretty weird. Why is it there, and why is it considered a lake and not a landlocked sea?

Chuck Meriam

How have natural spooky lakes helped scientific research on extremophiles and the evolutionary potential of life?

Mattea Orr

Has Geo ever heard of the Seneca Lake "Drums"? The folklore surrounding them has always fascinated me, but I'd love to know if they're a geothermic reaction, trapped gas, or any other theory Geo's heard of? I'd heard there was supposed to be a new inquiry into the cause by Cornell scientists, but I haven't heard of the results.

Empress of Smallwood

How old are some of these lakes? Was Lake Natron ever full of life? Or was it always a death trap since time immemorial?

Dani Kirby

I want Lake Erie to be on this list. Can we find a reason it’s special just because SPOOKY LAKES

wicker bitch

Talk about the bodies at the bottom of Lake Superior!

Annalise De Young

My grandparents live in a former gravel pit, and the bottom of the lake goes from 5ft to about 50ft maybe 10ft from shore. Sudden drop offs creep me out.

Rachel Gentile

Umm yes hello, this is incredible news. What is scarier spooky lakes, the ocean or space?

Emma

Lake St. Clair is to the Great Lakes as Pluto is to planets, true or false?

Rezz

Ummm yes hello! It seems that a lot of us are familiar with that intro! This is going to be a fun one for sure 😊🙌

Bonnie M Rutherford

What can you tell me about Kawah Ijen, the acid lake in the volcano in Indonesia? I watched a video of two volcanologists who rowed out into the middle is the lake to do tests. When they got back the condition of their instruments and the stuff they were using to get out there was pretty scary.

Annalise De Young

Can Geo talk about Lakes with sudden drop offs to terrifying depths? I know some are man-made, but there are many natural drop offs there is one in Michigan (silver lake) that drops off because it is being eaten by sand dunes (which have already eaten a small town). What other natural geologic features cause drop offs? Also super clear lakes, why such trickery?

Caitlin Sexton

Um, yes, hello, THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE! Are there any other spooky bodies of water Geo would like to spread the word about that do not fall under spooky lakes?

Badoopadoo!

Hello from MN! Our lakes are much less spooky… or are they? What kind of phenomenon might I have to look out for in the land of 10,000 lakes?

Bonnie M Rutherford

That lake is on the Paiute Reservation. That lake has a unique fish called the Cui-ui. It's a sucker fish. I've been fishing and swimming on the lake. They're a lot of weird stories about the lake. The one I recall best is about water babies that lure people into the lake sounding like crying children. I'm curious to see what Geo has to say about it.

DeeDeeNoodle

Should we in general be avoiding swimming in old quarry lakes? They are so pretty sometimes but the miljiness of the water at the one nearest me makes it a bit too spooky to swim.

Lizzy Martinez

Yes!!! I've been swimming before and it was overall such a strange feeling to be there. I am curious too!

Jeff Goodhartz

How were the tufas created in Mono Lake?

Greg Walloch

Tell us about the Instagram influencer lakes: Novosibirsk Maldives and Monte Neme that were worthy of posting on the main, but made visitors so ill.

Shannon Debo

I want to know about mountain lakes. All that Mist and cold 🥶 spooky. Also lake monsters like Nessie, does Geo have any comments or insights into lakes' spooky depths?

Karly KW

What is the tiniest haunted hydrology you've studied?

Austin Johnson

Can we talk about Lake Lanier? I know it’s considered a cursed lake. I guess a bunch of bodies have shown up on it? What’s the deal??

Person

Lake Crescent!! Tell us the lore, tell us the fax, I’m fascinated by this one now

Jordan

Are strange women lying in ponds distributing swords a basis for a system of government?

Saira (‘Sarah’) Manns

Are there any “spooky lakes” in Australia? I’m thinking Blue Lake in Mount Gambier, or pink lakes like Hutt Lagoon

Kathleen Regovich

What is the spookiest lake and why is it Lake Superior?

Saira (‘Sarah’) Manns

Not a question but imo the spookiest lakes are those made by intentionally flooding valleys that once contained towns

Baz Pugmire

Is the terrifying paranoia I feel when swimming in lakes that’re so dark and murky that you can’t see the bottom a evolutionary fear or just me?

Brittany Briceño

Hell yessss!! As soon as I saw “SPOOKY LAKES” I knew you must be interviewing Geo!! Okay, okay- I live near Fontana Lake in Western NC and it’s known for being one of the most beautiful, pristine lakes in the region, but it’s also known for quite the ~spooky~ history. Multiple towns lie deep beneath after the decision was made to built a dam to aid the Manhattan Project. My question- what’s the process of forcing entire towns to move actually look like? How much notice are people given? Are they compensated?

Heather Mardis

FTQA: Is it true there is a lake in Africa that released a plume of methane and killed people?

Adrianne Mahon

Are there any notable examples of previously spooky lakes that have been restored to a less spooky status, assuming the cause was human activity related?

Adalie Poland

As a michigander I must submit lake Superior as a spooky lake. The history and how the lake works is definitely spooky

Kelly Li

Umm yes hello, FTQA here! Is there a particular spooky lake that you feel like is tragically misunderstood?

Amanderlander

Everytime I swim In the Lake of the Ozark, I think about swimming over towns that were flooded when they made the lake. Tell me about underwater ghost towns.

Mini Minnie

Loch Ness? Does that count as a spooky lake?

Andrew McVay

Crater Lake in southern Oregon! Only filled with rain and snow and the level drops over the summer, but there’s no clear outlet that scientists have found!

Robin Kuehn

Can you talk about lake Baikal? That's the first spooky one that came to mind, what with the 5000+ ft depth and the super clear fresh water and the seals!?

Jen A.

How has people's education about spooky lakes changed since the publication of her book? 📘

Lauren Harter

I'm fascinated by the preservation of bodies in cold water like the Great Lakes. I'd love to know more about what conditions are needed for long-term preservation, and how much can it slow the process of decomposition?

Jmo

Geo actually posted about this lake recently on their pre spooky lake month road trip!

Cooper Michael

Hello! A two parter here: I grew up in Michigan and always learned about the Edmund Fitzgerald ship wreck on Lake Superior. It really has me fascinated about the folklore behind lakes and bodies of water in general. What kinda of folklore have you encounter in your studies of spooky lakes and how does that affect our desire to care and protect our lakes and stories.

Katie Hammond

Um yes hello! I remember Geo covering a spooky river/stream. Are there other spooky bodies of water?

Audrey

Are there spooky rivers?

Lizzy Martinez

Thank you, I just watched her video on it. So many spiders lol!

Jmo

um yes hello, could we get a quick breakdown of what the heck happened with the Salton Sea and is the same thing happening with The Great Salt Lake?

cheesemonger

geo omg AHHHHH!!!!!!! also where did Nessy come from?

cheesemonger

can you talk about bog bodies! and do they turn into coal like dinosaurs did?

Nick Reed

How much lake spookiness can be reasonably blamed on seiches?

cheesemonger

how much research do you have to do vs how much are you just the embodiment of a spooky lake yourself?

cheesemonger

right!! the fear of fresh water is totally different from the fear of the ocean. why is that?

cheesemonger

thoughts on Any Austin’s cyberpunk 2077’s water system? specifically the double dam situation.

grass

would subglacial lakes fall in this category? if so, how does it form and what purpose does it serve for our knowledge?

Jordan

I have questions about possible gateways to the underworld: Are spooky lakes often seen as linked to the underworld (or their equivalents)? Is Lake Avernus in Italy a spooky lake? If the ancient Romans thought it might be an entrance to the underworld, why did they link it to another lake with a canal and build houses at the lake? Just in general: do people tend to try to build things near spooky lakes, or do they tend to leave the spooky lakes alone?

Jordan

Do spooky lakes ever decide to stop being spooky, and do nonspooky lakes ever suddenly become spooky?

Jordan

Are there lakes that don’t seem spooky, but actually are?

Jordan

Does climate change impact spooky lakes? Are they threatened by over tourism?

Adrian

FTQA: What exactly happened at Lake Nyos? Where did the carbon dioxide even come from and how does the degassing system work?

Greg Walloch

Why are horny teenagers always the first ones to get murdered at a spooky lake?

Dani D

Omg I AM SCREAMING!!!! I am a huge fan of Geo!!! I am also of Venezuelan descent so I am so excited for her to talk about lake Maracaibo. So excited for the episode!!! Please send her my love 💙💛❤️

Dani D

I am also from Atlanta so if she wants to talk about Lake Lanier taking people into her that would be much appreciated 😂

Clay Mohrman

CROSSOVER EVENT OF THE CENTURY. All things Lake Baikal. Do we have any more information on how Nerpa Seals arrived there? Would love to hear more about its insane ice formations and why they exist. Oh and oil fish? Can't wait!

Jordan

What be the first spooky lake question you would want to answer if you had unlimited budget/resources?

mish the fish

where are they and when can i visit?

Jason E. Farabaugh

Recursive islands in lakes: third-order, fourth-order, fifth-order islands?

Matt Thompson

While it's still here, any spookiness to the Great Salt Lake in Utah?

geo.sassie

Geo!!!! So excited for this!! Um yes sooo what about spooky lakes on Mars? Any interesting info on those dried up bad boys!

geo.sassie

Lakes of eras past.... What's the coolest lake deposit of a lake that's no longer there (ie in geological record) that you know of?

Loanedstar

Quite a fun topic! I live in north Japan (honshu island) and we have some lakes nearby. One is nearby a long standing military base (Japanese/US) and has some lore but I’m wondering if you know anything about Lake Ogawara. Other lakes in our prefecture and neighboring prefectures are derp caldera lakes (towada and tazawa). The Japanese have some lore on monsters (yokai) and a very common one is the Kappa (turtle humanoid) and its something I’d love to know if there is more deep info the guest knows about Japanese lakes and related yokai or lore. Thanks!

Felipe Jimenez

Hi Alie! In northern Chile’s Atacama Desert, there are high-altitude lakes like Laguna Roja and Laguna Verde that are strikingly colored (deep red, turquoise, even milky white ). Many of these lakes are also considered sacred or dangerous by local Aymara and Atacameño communities. what makes these lakes so chemically and visually unusual? how do their extreme geolocation and cultural narratives shape our scientific and human understanding of them?

Teresa Gleason

What is the advantages for the lake ecosystem to have these extreme habitats? Are there beings living in there?

Austin Johnson

I would also love to hear about any spookiness with Lake Powell :)

Katherine Crawford

FTQA: Tell me about the middle island sinkhole in lake huron!! The microbial mats look like disgusting lava lamp goop? Or like an alien landscape

Björn Fredberg

Not specifically a question about a lake, but does our ologist know anything about Shanay-timpishka, the boiling river?

Björn Fredberg

When flooding a valley/basin with a town already in it, do they empty out the houses first or are there instances when they just up and left? I love the thought of fish taking over the town and being all like "WE live here now". It would make a good Pixar movie. Either way must be amazing for diving. Are you allowed to dive there?

Dave Brewer

A friend wrote a novel about the building of the Grand Coulee dam, part of the story talks about this, she had family that lived in the area flooded so it’s based on that history. “The Grand Promise” by Rebekah Anderson.

Dave Brewer

When I was in junior high, there were legends that the bodies people who drowned in Lake Crescent on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state were found in nearby Lake Sutherland, and vice versa, implying some sort of underground connection. I don’t think it’s true, but are there other legends (proven or not) about other connected bodies of water?

Magda Kossowska

Can you talk about Green Lake in Lafayette NY? Why is it purple at the bottom? And how is there a coral reef in Upstate?

Sarah Williamson

Which spooky lakes would you recommend visiting?

Ted Vician

Compared to the methods we currently use, or just in general?

Brilliant-Honey53

When Lake Ray Hubbard (Dallas Tx) was being built they were still in the process of bulldozing the homes on the south side of the I-30 bridge when a cloudburst flooded the area. many houses and all the heavy machinery had to be abandoned.

Erica Periandri

And which spooky lakes would you recommend NOT visiting?

Brilliant-Honey53

Joe Scott (Answers with Joe) on YT did an episode on that one. If I recall correctly it has to do with algae & microbial mat decomposition. But I have slept since then.

Erica Periandri

Of all lakes, what percentage or proportion of them are spooky?

Clemens V

What is it that makes lake-like water bodies so emotion katalysing for humans? What is needed for landscapes to grow and irrigate their own little spooky water body?

Brilliant-Honey53

Superior it‘s said, never gives up her dead. It‘s 1334 ft deep but The Great Slave Lake is 2014 ft deep. I would like to hear how they compare.

Clemens V

If you come here for recommendations on horror movies with lake theme, there is a letterboxd list for everything: https://boxd.it/lbn3k

Clemens V

My impression is that spookyness often centers around the question „Can I swim in this?“ both based on dangers in the lake and the ability to swim. Is this true for the lakes Geo studies?

Brilliant-Honey53

For me its totally about the temperature getting colder in layers. I hate swimming in lakes as I spent from 6 months to 8 years living part time on a boat on the Texas Coast. Tho Deep water triggers a form of agoraphobia when I imagine diving.

Brilliant-Honey53

Texas only has one natural lake, everything else is a reservoir. So Caddo Lake has a certain allure for me. And if you want creepy ghost stories The Lady of White Rock Lake in Dallas. She has a lot of lore. A radio dj caused a mob of teens to gather at the lake in the 50s or 60s to hunt for her.

ValBeListening

Why are there so many horror stories in relation to lakes? What's up with lakes creeping humans out?!

Meredith SK

She has a video about this one posted last week!

Aazam

Lake Lanier in Georgia! It used to be a city and many people die there every year. Not a question exactly, but curious if this is also considered spooky even though it’s man made

Meredith SK

I’m fascinated by glacial lake outburst floods, and how devastating they can be. What are the spookiest ones in history? Where are potential ones now? What are some other catastrophic phenomena especially with climate chnage?

BeckytheSassySeagrassScientist

Oooooo! I want to know if the stories you hear about a giant burst of some sort of toxic gas one day bubbling up and taking out a town or like a herd of cattle is a real thing. Would that be a deep anoxic zone from limited mixing suddenly being stirred up and turning over? Does that even make sense? I feel like I've heard multiple different iterations of the story which makes it feel folktale-y.

BeckytheSassySeagrassScientist

Also! I've heard a story about a lake in like Siberia, or somewhere equally as frigid and mysterious, flash freezing a bunch of horses creating the worst equine madame tussaud's in history. Something about being so cold and then an impurity (the horse) is introduced and jump starts crystalization? Fact or fiction?

RoadLesTravelled

How common are dead zones in lakes? Is this as simple as depth, or thermal stratification, or what? And what happens to organic creatures that enter dead zones?

Susanne Collins

I live near the Finger Lakes which I guess aren’t that spooky but I’d love to hear more about them! They’re unique in that they’re formed from glacial till and are extremely deep for their size. Almost like a big spooky monster scratched them from the surface of the earth perhaps??? (that is me forcing the theme onto them 💀)

Susanne Collins

The massive number of flies you need to get through in order to get into the lake is very spooky

Elinor Wahl

Two words: BRINE POOLS, a.k.a. underwater lakes

Marc Rubin

Does a lake that is so clear that you can't tell the water's depth count as spooky? (E.g., Waldo lake in Oregon). Some of the most spine-tingly moments I've ever experienced while paddle boarding have been when I can see the lake's bottom but can't tell if it's 1, 10, or 100 feet deep. Just thinking about it makes me anxious. Also, please do an episode on veterinary gerontology with my lovely wife, Dr Ashley Portmann of Home Together Vet!! https://www.instagram.com/p/DOWkCiyjbay/?igsh=NG1ucGp5ZTg5OTVy

Claire Gebben

Lake vortexes! So spooky! I'd love to learn more about how and why these form, and if there are any lakes particularly known for them.

Bee

What do you this it is about bodies of water that seems to frighten us so much?

Maureen Flood

I want to understand Kim if eruptions better. Which lakes have erupted? How does it work? Are there traditional myths and superstitions around this phenomenon? Which lakes are at risk for an eruption?

Kieran H

Are there any weird lakes out there that scientists are like “Welp, we don’t know why it’s like that! But it’s cool lol!”?

Kieran H

“An impurity (the horse)” is an incredible phrase 😆

Tommy McElrath

Why is Lake Baikal the best lake and why aren't we exploring it more?

Dylan

my question is i want to know everything possible to know about the lightning lake

Andrew McVay

2nd that! Makes me think of the Missoula Floods…

Andrew McVay

Or like in the movie Frog Dreaming (aka The Quest) when an excavator is left in a quarry that floods. Occasionally trapped gases push parts of the machine to the surface making it look like an enormous creature!

Andrew McVay

How about Neusiedler See (Lake Neusiedl)? So shallow there’s spooky fog/mist in the surrounding lands. What’s hidden in the mist!?

Kiki’s Delivery Service

Does Geo have a favorite spooky lake in literature or pop culture? I immediately thought of "Turn of the Screw," "The Haunting of Bly Manor," and "The Wide Window" from A Series of Unfortunate Events.

bug in a rug

Are there any lakes (like lake natron or late karachay) where life has no business surviving but, like, does anyway? What are some of the most extreme conditions for life in these lakes and how have organisms evolved to survive them?

Atlas They-Them

Thoughts on the theory that Nessie (a.k.a. the Loch Ness Monster) is the ghost of a dinosaur?! 🦕

Anthony Richards

I've heard about so-called "dead lakes"that can't support life for some reason. can you explain a little bit more about them?

Shannon Patterson

two times my wife and i have tried to get to queer lake in Algonquin. two times we have failed. are we cursed? first time we forgot TP, this weekend we tried and my anxiety took over and we turned around after two portages. my knees are also trash and we are using kayaks which is stupid hard. should we try again or just go to a different lake next time? feels like every summer, the portages get harder. note that we're a queer couple and want to go there simply because of the name.

Pseudonym Jones IV

I grew up within walking distance of a couple of meromictic lakes and they were creeeepy. Without the seasonal mixing of layers, the water in the lake stratified leaving a cloudy turquoise layer 4 or 5 meters down. Naturally, they were sacred to the indigenous people, and even as a clueless kid, it was obvious to me they were special. Are all meromictic lakes this weird?

Haley K.

Ummm yes hello… No question, I’m just excited!

Jessie Crawford

1. For a lake like Lake Natron, that is so caustic, how do the normal cycles of thermal stratification and upwelling during seasonal times of year change compare to a "normal" lake? Are there interesting changes in acidity or other chemical compounds? 2. What kinds of life can be found in these creepy caustic lakes? Extremophiles similar to the ones in deep sea hydrothermal vents? Are they being studied by scientists for any research into life on other planets? 3.For such extremophiles in these lakes, are any being used to clean up spills, pollution, radioactivity, or just in the process of purifying drinking water sources?

James Orsatti

Given the 1986 limnic eruption at Lake Nyos, how likely is it that a similar gas release could occur again, either there or at other volcanic lakes around the world?

Clara Stefanov-Wagner

First-time question asker here! In the world's deepest lakes, where darkness and higher pressures become concerns, how do the living things compare to ocean-adapted species?

brenna

first time question asker! what exactly is corpse wax and how long does it preserve a body? if i was to swim to the bottom of lake superior could i see come 1800 well preserved body like a wax museum??

Ma Mo

First time question asker here - I know scientists have installed a device in Lake Nyos and other lakes with similar potential for gas release. Can Geo talk more about those devices? How they work and how many lakes now sport them? Thanks!

ernesto meneses

First time question: Hi! I’m Ernesto My Husband Robert is a High School Teacher in San Francisco/ we love your podcast! The Ghost town of the Salton Sea in CA, The lake/sea What it was, What happened, how it’s evolved.

Earl of Greymalkin

1) Are people doing any interesting microbial bioprospecting in spooky weird lakes? 2) What are your favorite vertebrate and invertebrate spooky lake denizens? 3) Aside from disappearing lakes, are there any new lakes or temporary lakes that deserve being called spooky? 4) How do natural underground lakes work? Does the water carve out spaces or does it fill cracks that already exist from tectonic movement? How much does the water level vary season to season? How many organisms make them their home, or is it just water and rock? 5) What's your take on the level of spookiness of water temples in Lake Hyrule? 6) How hard would it be to visit some of your favorite spooky lakes as an ecotourist? How dumb would it be to visit them? 7) What is your strategy for researching new spooky lakes? What resources do you recommend? 8) What are the most likely reasons that divers exploring lakes don't make it back up alive? In what percent of cases do we just not know? 9) How are extreme weather events and climate change affecting some spooky lakes? Are they being destroyed or made spookier? 10) Do you anticipate running out of lakes any time soon? If you had to changed to a different geological spooky feature what would it be?

Cloudsnbugsnshrooms

Why are there so many shipwrecks in the Great Lakes, especially Superior and Michigan? I'm a backpacking guide out here and I always wonder why almost every trip involves learning about a new shipwreck.

Cloudsnbugsnshrooms

Why does it sound like you're entering a new dimension when ice skating on giant lakes???

Brittney Corrigan

Is the story about hundreds of horses flash freezing in a lake in Finland during World War II real?

D.J. Brenner

Do we know why certain bodies of water grow that bioluminescent algae that glows when things move in it?

K8 Rouse

How bad would it be for the overall ecosystem and for the people who live in Utah if the Great Salt Lake dried up? And why is it so rare on earth to have inland saline lakes like this one and the Dead Sea where salt and other minerals collect without draining to the sea? Also, what’s the deal with ultra-salinated lakes at the bottom of the ocean? And that one red lake that was recently discovered in Antarctica?

K8 Rouse

One time when I was visiting Yellowstone I happened to be walking down the boardwalk in one of the geothermal pool areas behind a group of college students on a field trip. I got to overhear the professor explain how the discovery of the thermofile bacteria that could survive at insanely hot temperatures helped to develop the science of PCR testing and made DNA sequencing possible. I would love to hear more about that and other ways that studying these kinds of lakes have contributed to science and our understanding of the world!

Mindy Corcoran Turley

Will-o’-the wisps. Will-o’-the-wisps. Will-o’-the-wisps. So cool. Impact of these and things like these on fear, folklore and reputation of spooky lakes (bogs, etc) ?

Haley K.

LAKE VOSTOK!!!

Andy Pepper

That unassuming lake in Africa that farted out the invisible cloud of deadly gas—what?? Are there other places that could happen?

Andy Pepper

How do they feel about the Salton Sea? Are there other manmade lakes that are as creepy?

daniel schmaniel

do more people die in lake lanier than an average lake, or is it like the bermuda triangle where there's nothing significant, it just gets more attention due to its history?

Reese Perini

Are there fewer species of animals in the spooky lakes? Or are there just more specially adapted organisms to the harsh environments?

rowantree

Does your work connect with exobiology in additional to understanding the natural phenomena occurring here?

Corrie Francis Parks

What about ancient apocalyptic lakes that spilled their rims and sent millions of cubic feet of water rushing through new land flooding everything and carving new canyons. I'm talking Lake Bonnieville, Lake Missoula etc. Was it as cataclysmic as it sounds it was it more like a cataclysm in slow motion over years? Were there early humans around when that happened? Was it like the movie FLOW? Are there any lakes it could happen to today?

rowantree

What a the craziest thing you’ve seen at a field site?

Kira Collins

How does a pond graduate to becoming a lake?

Philipp Meder

As someone from Western Europe: Can she recommend any interesting lakes near me that I could visit without a huge travel budget?

Magsaroni

I want to know everything there is to know about the old man in the lake (Crater Lake) and how he controls the weather

Ennifer Jelly Tot

I love it when worlds collide! I heard Geo on Wine and Crime and I'm so excited she's going to be an ologies guest! My question is, are there any spooky lakes in the UK (Or British Isles)?

Kait

OH HELL YEAH

Kait

What about places that used to be lakes? Or places predicted to become lakes? Thinking about before or after humanity (at least, recent humanity!)

Kait

Ok this a much more articulate version of my question, thank you!!

Lauren Allegra

What percentage of the lakes that you study are "spooky" due to natural phenomena vs human activity? Which is more interesting to you?

Sarah EG

how are spooky lakes being impacted by climate change? If the lake level drops could they end up more spooky, or is there anything dangerous that could be exposed?

Rae

I got to go kayaking on Lake Manly a little over a year ago! What's the history with that and all the other desert "lakes" that are either dry or have water with unusual chemistry and species like pupfish - I've heard they're suspected to have connected aquifers or something? Also can we PLEASE talk about pupfish and why they're the coolest fish <3

CurtisDawg

Haunted Lakes! Supernatural? Really? I think it falls into natural phenomenon. Can Geo explain away any "supernatural" rumors with "natural" happenings?

Sally Warren

How do you choose the lakes you talk about? My offspring is a 6th and 7th grade science teacher and a huge fan.

Coreen “the climate communicator” Weilminster

Lake Waullenoaupack in the Poconos of PA is also considered spooky…. due to the submerged town of Wilsonville, where communities were demolished and cemeteries moved to create the lake in the 1920s, leaving behind the alleged "ghosts of Wallenpaupack". Any thoughts on this lake??

CurtisDawg

How about Crater Lake in Oregon? It has a ghost log floating around.

Nicky G

A fabulous artist! Geo illustrated everything in their coloring book, does super cool pressed prints, watercolors... Check out their stuff!

Amanda Lask

I love spooky lakes month!! How does she decide on lakes to nominate?? When does she start researching for October?? What's her spookiest lake yet????

Erin Armitage

Hi, hello. I love Spooky Lake Month!!! I just want to know when Geo will be starting up a spooky lakes tour?!

Ranger France

This is it. My life will be complete after this episode is released. my two favorite people, all in one. I thought I went to heaven after Alexis Nicole Nelson joined for a talk. But GEOSAURUS??!!! uhm yes hello!!! I can't even think of a question. life is done

Ranger France

Are there smaller, less known spooky lakes that don't get enough attention? My brain thinks of Lake Worth and how the Lake Worth cryptid could possibly have a natural explanation to it.

Amy Arugula

Please tell us about the Lake Nyos carbon dioxide explosion! It's the most memorable story I learned in my limnology class

Amy Arugula

Tell us about what happens when a lake gradually becomes meromictic due to increasing salinity. Why does this happen? Is it spooky?

poisonedcheerios

Have any new or strange species evolved to live in these spooky lakes? Any fun adaptations?

Ranger France
