Y'ALL LIKE REVOLUTIONS?

We spoke with Dr. Jack Goldstone -- the world's foremost expert in revolutions and social change -- and covered as much as we could about why they happen, and how. (And yes there are protest tips.)

This one is a fascinating look at history, and our historical present. Also some tips on the overwhelm that social upset and change can cause. Let's chat about it below in the comments, shall we?

Thanks as always for listening and supporting this podcast. Literally could not do it without you.

Your father in pod,

Dylan

oh very cool

Alie Ward

I say your name and read your question!

Alie Ward

Hope it helps! Let's remain pissed! But also work together.

Alie Ward

He was a such a score -- we had to wait a few months to talk to him and shit hit the fan worse every day waiting

Alie Ward

This ep could have been like 65 hours long and not scratched the surface

Dylan

😭😭😭

Kyle

Anyone looking for some current day political revolution music should check out the folk musician Jesse Welles!

Meaghan Ratcliffe

i’m no history buff but this ep was so enlightening and important to hear right now

Elinor Wahl

I actually found this episode very inspiring and helpful to listen to, so thank you both for that ❤️

Kyle

It's too bad this was recorded before the recent revolution in Nepal. I would have loved to hear more about that.

Maddy B

an incredible episode!! Thank you so much!! I'm sending it to all of my ~revolutionary~ pals for a bit of inspiration in these trying, trying times

Wandering Wyatt

Thank you! Loved it. And thank you for continuing to reference the genocidology episode 🍉

Aimee Parcell

Do you post on YouTube/ YouTube Music? I'd love to listen there, but I don't see it

Alie Ward

I don't! We've talked about it, but we don't record our interviews for video release (my guests aren't comedians or celebs typically, and video release changes the vibe) and a lot of folks don't want to go to YT if there's not a visual component.

Alie Ward

May the odds be ever in your favor

Alie Ward

yes, that would have been relevant! I worried this one was too aside-heavy but there is SO much context needed

Alie Ward

Good to have some insight on current events from an expert, right?

Lindsay O'Neill

The concept that not all revolutionaries are "the good guys" was eye-opening. It really helped me contextualize what we've been living through for the last decade (as Americans).

You can add Ologies to your YT music podcast feed by adding it as an RSS feed! Theres no video obviously (this is ok!) but the audio works just fine. That's how I usually listen if I'm listening in the car specifically since it works well over android auto.

Emily Krieger

yet another public service episode, thank you! I was left pondering what is peaceful? Who gets to define that?

Brain 🧠 Shenanigans

This was an amazing episode, and a really important one to hear right now. I immediately shared it in my cousin group chat where we regularly question the reality we are living in 😵‍💫

Jonathan Cummings

I found myself wishing it was. It ended and I was like, wait, but what about, well everything else we need to know for this moment I'm fine too.

My likely over long steam of consciousness reaction. Such an important topic, and one that has felt more and more relevant in the US by the year, month, day, hour, and maybe soon minute lately. I was particularly struck by the statement of the credentialed elite having failed to meet the challenges of the last decades. I don't know that I agree, but also found myself struggling to find a convincing cause for disagreement. I guess I think there is a lot of nuance here, which could probably fill many episodes on there own, but I think it is largely a failing of the executive credentialed elites not being reactive to the guidance from the staff level credentialed elites. Based on my feeling and experience more than data though so shruggie? It was also wild to listen to this right now given what is happening with our government, a likely coming government shutdown of unknown outcome and duration, while being a government employee. My wife, partly to potentially avoid being laid off herself from a struggling state university, took a new job at high-end liberal arts college in the neighborhood state. So we moved for her work and to be in a location that feels safer given or political leaning. However, my office location hasn't been able to move with us despite other employees in my office changing work locations in prior administrations. I now live 2-1/2 hours from my office, so I have to live in two places to keep my job. If I was allowed to change offices it would save taxpayers 12k per year because I would shift to a lower cost of living adjustment area, 4k in office rental space, and would enable me to work with students who could assist on my projects. And now there is a treat to just did rather than furlough me and most other federal employees if the shutdown occurs. My career, and many many others have become bargaining chips in our nation's revolution.

Jonathan Cummings

To some degree this feels like a "history is written by the winners" topic. However, I hope we value a functioning UN and International Criminal Court as a means to avoid that.

When Allie said “Allison you better not get any politics in my science podcast” was anyone else like “who TF is Allison?” For far longer than they wanna admit? 😅

Melissa DeWoskin

Pretty much what I learned (and have been feeling) is that those of us who live comfortable lives (speaking about myself and many in my life) are too lazy to make change. I'm so mad and sad but then I go about my normal life.....

JawsThemeSwimming

I feel like my questions were left out it’s kind of depressing. This topic is incredibly important to me. It’s okay but idk where else I can get up close answers from experts. 😕

JillyDoogs

If questions are about the same as other commenters, Alie and team tend to lump all the users together with the same type of questions. It is more organized for them and easier especially when they get a ton of questions.

When music came up, I was hoping "Won't get fooled again" might get a nod. Sometimes the new boss becomes as corrupt as the deposed boss.

Jes Woodard

I definitely spiraled existential panic but that’s what happens when you face directly what’s happening right now. So thank you for helping me face hard things.

Specs Owl

Great episode, except the quote "countries like Europe"

K8 Rouse

This episode helped me a lot - I’ve been having existential angst for a while now wondering WTF is going on, and now I have context for it and am able to face it head on in order to know what we’re really facing and what to do about it. It paints a bleak picture, but it’s always better to face it knowing what you’re dealing with rather than constantly worrying about how much you’re worrying. This gave me the insight that 1. My worry is justified and 2. There is a path forward out of this. Whether we can forge that path forward will depend on a lot of things, but there is a path forward. Love to all of my fellow ologites in this little community Alie has built. My goal going forward from here is to try to build as much IRL community as possible - we desperately need it.

Wow fascinating! I loved this one. If Americans want to see change in the political control, they should start a movement to dismantle the process of registering with a political party (unless they join that party as a fee-paying member). Having the vast majority of voters “independent” would stop organisations using electoral roles to stack appointed positions and stop gerrymandering.
