The ethnocycology bit about doggy frito smell! If I remember correctly 😅

AJ

Salugenology has changed my life. I started birdwatching this year, and I think this episode was a catalyst for that. I’m starting to volunteer to help local birds and get involved in birdwatching events in my area. Thanks for the inspiration. 💗

Matt Schmidt

I really loved the Fromology episode because, let’s be honest, cheese makes everything better. Closely followed by Macrophycology and Hippopotomology. Really hard to pick. So many great episodes.

Matt Schmidt

That really was a great one as well.

Katie Hammond

Medieval Codicology. I loved illuminated manuscript art before that episode, but the context made them so much more interesting. Trolleyology & Literary Olfactology were the ones I recommended to other people the most.

Chrysalis Ashton

My favorite episode this year was the long covid one with Dr. Ely. I am a respiratory therapist and I have read and cited SO MUCH of his work! “Meeting” him on your podcast was so enlightening. He's such a kind, down to earth human who truly cares about his patients. ❤️ His story about the patients he is helping with long covid and how it started with simply believing them…powerful and inspiring. It definitely changed my perspective on patients I care for with long covid or similar debilitating “invisible” disabilities and made me more empathetic with them. And the clip from the physics girl…omg my heart. I feel so much for her and her husband. 🥺

Lauren Ahrenholz

Salugenology made me think about my activities differently and has made them more meaningful. I've recommended that episode to so many people in my life.

Deli Dames

I second Salugenology! I wish they would have social prescription everywhere!

Jessica Wood

Salugenology (WHY HUMANS REQUIRE HOBBIES) I listened to this episode twice and told numerous people about it. I was so inspired by this episode I joined a weekly improv group and Toastmasters.

Shannon Bartels

I have to choose the thyroid episode. In April I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. After the initial shock wore off, I listened to that episode again. Knowing what to expect made a huge difference. I had surgery in May and radioactive iodine in July, and scans showed no metastasis outside of the lymph nodes that were removed. I will be forever grateful to Alie and Ologies for preparing me for what was to come and helping me go into it with a positive attitude.

Alexa C.

This is such a hard choice, asdfghkfksjs. Salugenology is the one I've recommended the most this year, but then personally the Revolutionology episode struck the "things I needed to hear from qualified rational professionals at this exact moment" chord the most 😅

Michael Crosa

I consider myself OCD-adjacent so I was stoked for that one. I was happily surprised to hear the aside about Tourette Syndrome and PANDAS, which is my diagnosis! The whole OCD episode inspired me to talk to my mom about my quirks growing up and how they are part of my adult self, what I may have inherited from her, and what a positive experience parenthood/childhood was for both of us. I also shared the episode with my wife who then found a different psych episode which really spoke to her deeply. She is now a new Ologite and these episodes have given us more language to talk about ourselves and learn about each other with. Thank you Alie for provoking these deep moments with my loved ones! And maybe we’ll have a Tourette’s episode one day?

Michael Crosa

I had just signed up to volunteer at my local zoo, that episode was very validating!

Felix Lasselle

So many good ones this year. I think about Salugenology at least once a week and recently bought the Connection Cure to scratch the itch. Aquatic Ecology was also very useful and interesting, specifically the kg of CO2 per kg of (different kinds) food. Climate Fervorology and Revolutionology together could really focus people attention on how to make actionable change in the climate crisis.

Spencer

Araneology by far!!🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️Bug episodes always the best. This was actually a triple listen for me which hasn't happened in over a year!!!! So many facts I wanted to remember, and such good vibes with the ologist. I've gone hiking with a few groups since this episode and have been shamelessly regurgitating facts... first that come to mind now are their mouth and butt legs!!!!! (12 not 8!!!) and also how only like 25 out of 50000 species are harmfu! ((And it's often not a spider bite when we think it is)) also so much good flim flam proven wrong! I'm hereby casting 2 million votes for this episode

Julia L

Idek what to say. First I have OCD and it was so refreshing to listen to real OCD experts. I bought all of Mary roach’s books after listening to her episode… shall I say I am SURFING THROUGH THEM RN. I love the surgery aspect, I’ve learned so much already. I quote the cheese episode like every single day with a cheese fact. Best info EVER! Dare I say it makes me cheese 🤭😀

Mel Rowsell

I loved Literary Olfactology - it was something that I didn’t even know existed and I just loved the way it expanded by brain. Very cool.

Abby Hampton

MS was great! As a healthcare provider, it will helpful for my future patients as well. On the personal side, he said that if you feel bad tomorrow then you overdid it yesterday. I have several chronic conditions and this has actually reframed how I monitor my symptoms and helped with my pacing.

Abby Hampton

And how could I forget Salugenology. It spurred me to do more research on the topic. Now, I have done more “prescribing” of hobbies and social activities with my patients and I do think it has made a difference for some (I work in mental health).

Mark Wilkes

Trollies and Porcupines!

Tari Lee Johnson

Top three: Ratllesnakes, hippos, and pottery. Why? I HATE snakes yet am captivated by them and this was soooo interesting. I do love venom and anti-venom and in fact developed a lab to better teach about antibodies and antigens. Hippos because at night they walked on the path right next to my tent in Botswana. Also because they are hard to identify individually. Pottery, because this was two masters discussing the beauty of their art and skill.

KeyLime Pi

There have been so many delights on the pod this year but I have to pick Urocyonology. Not only are these foxes wonderful and adorable, Bill Leikam’s descriptions of how he began observing them are such an inspiration! Your doctor tells you to walk more, next thing you know you’re the foremost expert on foxes. Anything can happen in life! I love it.

Hawkeye Norman

For the impossible task of picking an Ologies episode, I defer to the episode I've listened to three times: Trolleyology, along with all things dog related Ethnocynology & Eco-odorology, following the "top-3" model. To expand to a top-5, I have to include foxes's Urocyonology & secret codes' Cryptology with Alie's coded message about learning. And also Medieval Codicology. Every ologist is so charming, that I instantly become a fan of their field and wish I were working in it. Dream job is working with dogs & dolphins & sea turtles & ... well, just all me an enthusiastic undecidedologist.

Kira Collins

The fact about squirrels sending all the blood to their tail and waving it around in a, "I see you, dingbat" to rattlesnakes and also not doing that for pit vipers still amazes me.

JillyDoogs

Ooooh toss up between Salugenology and Literary Olfactory. Both changed my outlook on my life, my kid’s life and I rave about Ologies ALL THE TIME. I am the fact giver now at book club, each badass lady in my group asks me for facts. It’s great!! ❤️

Ale Guerrero

Cryptology was completely fascinating! I listened to it in the gym and wanted to listen to it 10x over. Almost overstayed my workout because I didn’t wanna stop! Also I’m never gonna get over the flim flam debunking in Hippopotomology. There’s been a smear campaign against hippos and I’m now on a personal crusade to tell everyone that hippos aren’t the most dangerous animal!

A. Ortega

Count me in as another listener that thinks about Salugenology constantly after listening to it (and always struggles to spell it out right!). I’ve recommended it a lot as well. But gosh, even trying to pick honorable mentions is hard! So many great episodes this year

Simone Patrick

This was my first episode of Ologies, I've been working through the back catalogue. I loved it, especially how these bizarre snails and penis trees are likely just like our modern day doodling, shout out to the weird 'S' we all doodled as kids!

Matt Ceccato

I loved the seaweed episode.

Sarah

Spiders, rattlesnakes, and spooky lakes (oh my!).

Han the Bee

Trolleyology was AMAZING. Also loved Salugenology and Literary Olfactology!

Jenna Congdon

You used my audio question on the Cardiology episode, and it literally sent me screaming and running all over the house in a fit of gleeful zoomies. I felt "famous" lol. The community you've created, the way you let us all participate, and the graceful balance of silly fun with serious facts is an absolute breath of fresh air. Thanks, Dad!!

Niquita42

I'll have to think on the moments Q but I loved these three episodes: Aquaculture Ecology (SUSTAINABLE OCEAN FOODS) Crotalology (RATTLESNAKES) Fromology (CHEESE)

Wandering Wyatt

It’s so hard to pick! Human Technomorphology - MARY ROACH!!! the mutual admiration between Mary and Ali was wonderful Fromology - because CHEESE MS - just because I find MS such a mysterious illness and I learned so much OCD - so much debunking of flim flam Politics of Smell - WHO KNEW?!?!? Aquaculture - part of my grad school thesis included Indigenous Aquaculture (shout out to British Columbia’s clam gardens) Still haven’t listened to Spooky Lakes but loved the Insta post. 😍

Michelle Helpling

I started listening to Ologies newly postpartum and started with Salugenology and I was instantly hooked! It was mentally stimulating and truly changed my outlook on my new life and routine. My daughter and I go on stroller walks outside every day and have been listening to Ologies ever since!

Susan Singley

I can't pick one favorite episode ... each one is so different -- however, if my back was against the wall, I'd have to say, every episode with my favorite Dad, Alie

Colby Evans

Seconded as top 5 facts of the year

Colby Evans

Sorta jealous/not jealous for that to be your first episode... what a weird one!

Colby Evans

I did enjoy the fan-girling over Mary Roach - how can you not??

Kaitie_Jean

Rattlesnakes! The squirrel fact about them shaking their tails differently for rattlesnakes is crazy!

Erin White

Eco-advocacy! LOVED hearing about ways that people can actually affect change at a grassroots level and how encouraging that is- and a few ways that they recommended that people start!

Keely Chavez

How dare! No one answer is correct! I NEEDED some of these episodes for “me search”; I was thrilled to learn more about some of my favorites & as always I’ve been delighted by surprises in others. That’s the magic of the show!!! Also, let’s have a show on ranked voting, is there an ology for that?!?! 😂

Ranger France

Oh man it is hard to pick just one. Oddly enough, my favorite episodes have been ones that are completely out of my scope of what I study and am interested in. However, Salugenology!!! Okay this one might take the cake. First of all, I was a mentioned review. I am the nondescript username (I didn't know how to change it) that left a review years ago when I first started listening to Ologies. It really did inspire me to go back to school, to follow my dream of being a park ranger and maybe someday being on Ologies myself! I got my associates in Environmental Science and Geology (not ecology like planned) and went into working part time as an interpretive ranger. When I updated the review earlier this year (that was mentioned) I had just finished the probationary period in my first full time park ranger position that I had been working towards the whole time. I just completed my first year last week and it has been a dream!! But besides that- I had hit a lull in life where all I did was work, scroll, sleep. I had just started therapy at the time and this episode helped me to finally blossom out and know that I had to treat my interests as a prescription. Use that 60 minutes of scrolling to do that painting tutorial, go on a bike ride with my husband, join that corn hole league at work. And with the help of my fantastic therapist on finding these joys in life again, I have been able to slow down and relax, significantly improving my mental health and work-life balance. It gave me a life outside of my 9 hour work day. So actually, I would say this is most definitely my favorite episode. It changed my life.

Kate Gav

Wow -- so much great learnin' and chattin' in all of these episodes! Always the moments when I go, "wait--what?" and have to rewind and relisten. But if I had to pick . . . I would say Macrophycology/Aquaculture Ecology because they highlight our oceans as a valuable resource that could save our collective butts. Also, both Cardiology and MS (which overlapped a ton with autoimmune everything), because we all need this type of medical info we can understand and apply. Love you and thanks!

Megan Younce

I'm so so so far behind on my podcasts, the only one from this year I've jumped ahead to listen to was the rattlesnake episode but was FLOORED to learn about the relationship between rattlesnakes and squirrels!! I've told everyone who will listen to check that episode out!! One day I'll get caught up.. I'm up to scallops right now which shows how much I've been neglecting the pod

Dawn and Eric Easton

I loved pottery, cheese, weird old manuscripts, secret codes, and spiders best of all of them, but I gleaned some tid bits from all I listened too. Love Ologies. Huge fan!

SJ Rantzen

One that really stuck out to me was the long Covid episodes. My favourites tend to be the animal and history eps but hearing the way Wes Ely spoke about how he advocates for his patients was just so wonderful to hear. Also the thyroidology episode spurred me to go get my thyroid function checked - fortunately all good but I found out inadvertently that I have Gilbert syndrome from those tests!

MamaLuz

After I heard Salugenology, I wrote on our refrigerator white board, "Movement, Nature, Art, Service, Belonging." As a single parent of a 10 year old and a 4 year old, it has provided an amazing touch point for me and my kids after a couple years of rough transitions and mom overwhelm. More bike rides, beach clean-ups, impromptu arts and crafts, making a game of looking for ways to help neighbors, and intentionally becoming more rooted in our community. Less couch-rotting, kids bickering, feeling disconnected. Literally life changing. We probably would have got there eventually, but you really fast-tracked a course correction that I didn't realize we needed. We love 'em all, but this one hit a little different.

Dave Miller, PhD

So many great episodes but here are my top 3: Cryptology and the realization by the team trying to break the Enigma code that a particular message didn’t contain a single “W”…game changing event Fromology and the fact that lactose isn’t your problem, it’s the amount of cheese you’re consuming (guilty) and, Literary Olfactology…the subject is really intriguing but I had a front row seat to the abuse Dr. Louks endured on X and it was wonderful to hear what a truly decent person she is (and I bailed from that hell hole of social media site not long after) thank you Alie - you are a national treasure!

roni 💥

cryptology, human technomorphology, and serpopsychology are in my top 5 like… ever? fromology an honorable mention because of how whimsical it is while also being most dope. all of these have itched and scratched the grooves of my brain so deliciously. also meant to mention this video when the creepy episode aired (i forgot) but the youtube channel vsauce has an awesome video on the same subject from a while back. honestly every video on that whole channel is mind blowing. https://youtu.be/PEikGKDVsCc?si=RjuL9Rl2er8W5ZA6

Adam Foote

Overall, all of the animal-related episodes have taught me that everything else does wild things with their urine. Or maybe humans are just not actualizing our pissy potential.

glenna gordon

HI Alie! I love you, you're the best. I'm a photojournalist and I recently learned to scuba dive and shoot underwater and your episodes on aquaculture and seaweed were THE BEST. Oh, and maritime archeology. And dolphins, sharks, etc. Anyway, while I was doing a recent underwater assignment in a rugged part of Northern California, I was struggling with my camera and when I sat down to make some dreaded repairs, my beautiful girlfriend put on the episode about the history of revolutions to calm me down while I worked. It worked; both to calm me down, and, we fixed my camera.  "History, it's just gossip that matters." You're the fucking best.  G.

Clancy Thomas

HANDS DOWN the Hurricanes episode! I live in South Carolina and hurricane season here is always a crazy experience each year. Learning more about storm weather and classifications was a blast.

SleepyClover

Crotalology (RATTLESNAKES)! I'm not even interested in snakes and I've listened to that episode multiple times and sent it to many friends! Such a great episode 👏🏽

Scientifically Lily

I really liked the little gray foxes. I didn’t realize not all foxes were like the red/orange one. Have a few I need to listen to still though

Andrew

MS - I waited for this and was not disappointed. I have known that I had MS since 2011. I retired early from my profession to get ahead of the symptoms and not let them define my work. I have shared this episode as a primer for friends and family.

Stephanie Coombes

Oh this is hard!! The hobbies one was so fun and helpful in my personal life and in my professional life as a youth mental health nurse! Cheese was amazing (omg the maggots!) and the porcupine one. I snorted laughing at the porcupine under the deck sex story. The rebellions one was also an incredible blend of humour and intelligence.

Sarah Vanderkleed

Oh my god, this is hard. At the top of my list are: Revolutionology, Human Technomorphology, Araneology, AI Ethicology, Domestic Phytology, Trolleyology, and Erethizonology. At least from this year😄. The porcupine one and the Swapping Out Body Parts (Human Technomorphology) one are especially hilarious! (And informative!)

Jenn K

I genuinely love all the episodes, but the earliest ones have a special place in my heart. I listened to them while hiking the PCT, and now whenever I replay those episodes: Volcanology, Primatology, Hagfish!, and so many more! I can picture exactly where I was on the trail. Thanatology (and the follow ups) were especially moving, sobbing while surrounded by nature and not another soul, yet feeling so human and connected- it was such a wild and enriching experience! The story that’s always stayed with me is how Ologies began, especially what you shared in the Museums episode about volunteering during a tough time and how that small step blossomed into something that now reaches and supports people all over the world. That honesty helped inspire me to take my own leap: hiking the PCT alone. That experience has pushed me to do so many other incredible things since. Thank you for that. Truly.

Erin Kaczmarowski

The shout out to Occupational Therapists at the beginning of part 2 of Salugenology!! This was one of the first episodes I ever listened to and I spent a good chunk of part 1 yelling at my windshield "Why aren't you mentioning OT? When are you going to talk about us?" I was so mad by the end 😢😤 but then you rescued it right at the top of the second part and I've loved this show ever since. I commute with you more often than anyone else and tell casual acquaintances random facts frequently. Thank you for everything you do!
