HEAR ME OUT. It's cockroaches. But, like, not just the ones you hate.

Dr. Dominic Evangelista is a cockroach scientist and he let me ask him approximately one million questions about what makes a roach a roach, where they live in the wild, which ones are the most beautiful, what their personalities are like, what to do if you don't want a cockroach as a roommate, what to do if you'd LOVE one as a pet, and how cockroaches are out there with live-saving evolutionary technology in their gross (beautiful) little bodies.

Have you listened yet? It will help you get over the fear and disgust -- I promise. Let's talk about it below.

Dazzling colors. Remote habitats. Gentle parenting. Fantastic genitalia. And yeah, swimming through sewers to surprise you. Still listening to the episode, but on the golden shower topic, IIRC that male porcupines urinate on females during courtship.

coolguybrad

Is there a spot that has the different types of cockroaches you discussed listed, or pictured? I want to see their prettiness but I don't know how to spell them all to search them 😅

Josh

Where did the myth come that they can survive anything?

Felipe Jimenez

I liked the episode, definitively gain some respecto for them and their asymmetrical genitalia. I’m a bit dissapointed that he didn’t have the La cucaracha ringtone, but that’s ok. Thanks Alie for another episode to remember!

Bit of bitter butter

I find myself, as an only-ish child, relating rather a lot to those cockroaches with the poor appetite and bad flirting skills...

Elinor Wahl

YES, that was covered in the Erethizonology episode XD There's even a recording of porcupine cries of passion, too! The female has to create a 'landing strip' for the male by laying her tail across her back with the underside exposed, and even with that precaution, I still don't know how they can succumb to their passions without goring each other

Elinor Wahl

This episode made me so happy, you have no idea! I love that you focused so much on all the traits and behaviors that make cockroaches truly interesting, and steered away from the conceptions of roaches that people are typically so hung up on. I actually intend to make cockroaches a major part of a novel project I'm working on - supporting players in the narrative, but very important (and beautiful) denizens of a fictional alien environment

Alie Ward

Yay! and I loved your question about the Simandoa cave roach!

Alie Ward

Bahahaha! I wonder what happens if cockroaches are raised with a human friend, and vice versa...

Alie Ward

I am too, Felipe, and it was a great question.

Alie Ward

This episode is up and published and we do talk a lot about their survival skills!

Alie Ward

Oh yes, you are correct!! Although it's possible that cockroaches (300M years old) started the trend

Elinor Wahl

Oh, thank you for saying so! ❤️

coolguybrad

Thank you so so much Alie!! I'm taking a gander now!!

g0ose0nTheLo0se

I’ve always had such respect for the cockroach and now they might be favorite bug. Have never felt grossed out by them and honesty had fun being the one to catch and release (and sometimes violently kill) them in college! A remaining question I have is if say one does…send them to Ibiza… is it okay to flush their remains down the toilet? I have visions now of a shield-like blockage of cockroaches in the sewers

Lily Bee

I really enjoyed this episode! I was waiting for an audio of Natasha Lyonne saying cockroach the whole time 😅

Susanne Collins

Loved the ep! Perfectly timed for my very first Insectapalooza this weekend (a free event put on by Cornell every year—will I see any Ologites there??). Hope to meet a few roaches tomorrow! Also—how I know I’m a Bug Guy through and through—when I heard that termites are actually cockroaches I literally gasped out loud and had to take a moment to collect myself.

Alie Ward

Oh my fucking god how did I forget this

Alie Ward

I mean, they can get down in there anyway? Maybe they will snack on all the dead goldfish and fatbergs

Elinor Wahl

I felt so vindicated to hear that mentioned ❤️ If you want to read a whole book about termites, I recommend 'Underbug: An Obsessive Tale of Termites and Technology' by Lisa Margonelli

It's not too late! You can still edit that in

I have been obsessed with this podcast since my friend introduced me to it in July of 2024. I binged listening to your episodes from then until about January of 2025. Listening to two to three episodes a day over that timeframe. Can ya say I got hooked? Probably so. Became a Patreon very quick too! I love the weird and interesting things I have learned from this podcast and its community. Also, got excited with the mention of giraffes possibly coming soon in this episode’s asides. They’re my favorite!

I was really hopping to hear about how they relate to allergies but then realized this episode was maybe meant to make the little critters more friendly?

Citizen OfXee

I loved the episode. But wanted to stop by and cheer for my favorite fictional cockroach. Archie from Archie and Mehitabel.

Savannah Johnson

It seems like there's a bit of a skip at 48:33 where we jump from talking about the pain easing plaster to cockroach parental care? Is this just my podcast player?

Savannah Johnson

Happy tears because it WAS just my podcast player and somehow in the little bit that it skipped over, my first time question was (kind of) asked :')

Susan G

I don't mind cockroaches. I don't want the ones in my house to actually be on me, but I have an agreement with them. During sleeping hours, they can do whatever they want (though please try and avoiding leaving cockroach poop on things). During awake hours, they should keep to themselves. If I come down at 2am for some reason and see a roach, that's me interrupting their time! As far as cockroaches I want to touch, in vet school years ago one of my lecturers had a giant wood cockroach and I held him and his name was Bruce and he was really cool.

Andrew McVay

“An infestation of cockroach experts” ❤️ The more there are, the more there are…

Andrew McVay

Bonus Episode! Safety Steve! What was already a great Tonight Show piece could have been historically famous with the roach milk! Oh well, it made the bonus episode that much more fun 👍

Peach MD

Hi Alie, I just became a patron because 1) it’s about damn time, but more importantly 2) I need to tell you that I’m at a wedding right now and I got nervous about mingling during cocktail hour…and ended up info-dumping cockroach milk facts to a stranger. Three times. And I’d do it again.

Ramsay

Okay, this episode seriously relived me of some long held cockroach-related anxieties...

Haven't listened yet, but in my biology lab in college we were taught by a roach biologist. She would bring in a couple of large trash cans of roaches and we were expected to help ourselves to some and do things like weigh a bunch of them and do the statistics. I never did learn to handle them without gloves but with gloves on, it wasn't too horrible. She told us stories of bringing them across town from her lab in taxis. She would tell the driver they were crickets, I guess the roaches had too much of a yuck factor.
