Please enjoy this romp through topics including matriarchies, pseudopenises, the Lion King, animal giggling, and so much more.

Hol up. Hyenas are Jimothy-shaped cats with t-dicks? How are they not trans masc icons??

Fantastic episode, I learned so much! I listened yesterday and am still in shock that you'd never seen the lion king, Alie 😂

Amandragora

A few years ago, I was looking up werehyenas and that’s when I fell in love with the aardwolf. There’s a cool book called The Kishi if anyone is into fantasy.

Alie Ward

I don't know how I hadn't either!

Elizabeth

I realized while I was listening to this that the critique of the hyenas in The Lion King that I've always heard is about the racial/cultural coding and not about how their actual hyena-ness was wrong. Can she come back and tell us all about coyotes please?

Bob Riggs

I’ve been into biology for over fifty years and I was completely unaware that hyenas are feline. Wonderful episode that got me through a post total knee replacement physical therapy session.

Dani Goodman

Hearing Alie say “love” after every note Dr. Wilkinson gave on how the female spotted hyena’s clitoris works was the highlight of my whole week. So much love for you, Alie — for your open heart and open mind. And thank you, Dr. Wilkinson, for the work you do!

Yygalnnok

It can't be legal to be that damn adorable.

This was such an excellent episode I loved learning about hyenas (and that aardwolves are ADORABLE) . And I loved learning about Dr. Wilkinson too.

At one point in the episode, you discussed hyenas as cat-like and offered the example of both hyenas and cats squeezing thru little openings, unlike dogs. As a counter-example, I will offer my family’s dog, who was an absolute Houdini. He would squeeze under the smallest gap in the fence to get out and roam our neighborhood. It was not until we attached partially buried chicken wire to the bottom edge of the fence along the perimeter of our yard that we could keep him in.

I’ve never watched _The Lion King_ either. I was too old for Disney movies when it came out in 1994 and my kid is far too young.

LesLee

They’re cute, I want to slap myself!!!

LesLee

I would love a coyote episode, too!!

This episode definitely goes in the pantheon of quintessential ologies! Well-spoken ologist + "wait, really?" science + Alie's charm = entertainment that has me pondering the incomprehensible complexity and diversity of life. Also, the end-of-episode secret about the true cause of Gremmie's smell was absolutely hilarious!! 10/10 Given Gremmie's age, I really think Alie + ologies should do an episode on veterinary gerontology..

Amandragora

Yes!! Ridiculously bébé 😱😍🥰😭

Crazy, I just heard Dr. Christine Wilkinson speak at Cal State LA and I’m so glad I got to hear her again!

I missed the call for questions on this one. I was unprepared to say the least.

Bummed that I am so late in listening to this. Love it! Had to pause when it got to the Lawrence Berkeley hyenas so I could add some detail and overshare, though. When I was taking Physical Anthropology at Laney College in 1997, our instructor was a primatologist working with the baboons at the primate lab at Lawrence Berkeley Labs. According to him, they let the hyenas roam where the primate enclosure area was at during the night to dissuade the animal rights activists from attempting to "liberate" the "sweet little" baboons (and the public safety nightmare that a troop of baboons running amok in an urban neighborhood would cause). I do remember regularly going up to the wind chimes at night to party, and we could hear the hyenas. The 90s were *wild*..... Anyway, Mr. Taff also had some riveting stories that permanently burned 'ischial callosities' into my brain (but that is a different ology)....

I am both fascinated and terrified of hyenas now. Any species that has a boss lady I’m here for it! But also will not be able to sleep at night if I’m ever in their vicinity!

Tina

Nostalgic for the country that promised to kill Nazis not elect them!!!👏

Love this episode but I’m also so sad that we could’ve had a COYOTE EPISODE?! Please please. We need to hear folks yap about coyotes 🥺

I Ejaculate Fire🍆🔥🔥🔥

Not the Hyena podcast I was expecting😂😂. But I get why the algorithm put it in my feed given how much History Hyenas I listen to.
