*This episode is published and ready to hear wherever you get podcasts. Let's talk about it.*

Gah! We've had some family and friends in town (including getting to meet editor Jake Chafee and his wonderful partner Joey IN REAL LIFE for the first time after years of Zooms!) so apologies this discussion thread is up a day or two later!

Noctohabitology (SLEEP PROCRASTINATION) is up and published and Dr. Vanessa "Nessy" Hill is just a dream. Do you sleep procrastinate? Like me, have you thought you were alone in the world and an ashamed little troll creature? We are awake, but not alone.

Let me know what you thought about the ep in the comments and if you've tried any of the "intervention" tips Dr. Hill mentioned. Getting angry at tech billionaires has really helped me, tbh.

Well, I related to every single sentence. What a great episode!

Alie Ward

Like, LIFELONG problem for me I am just solving

Alie Ward

Check out her YouTube channel, Braincraft!

Listening to this episode and commenting here as I'm in the process of sleep procrastinating😅

I also just got my Brick, absolute game changer. I’m not a sleep procrastinator but I do have trouble with just scrolling reels for hours after work and the Brick has been so beneficial for just getting me off my phone so I can wind down without livewiring every post on the internet into my eyeballs for 5 hours HAHA

I’ve been a sleep procrastinator literally since birth. On the night I was born, my mom says a nurse burst in at midnight and said “Here, you take her! She’s keeping all the other babies awake!” 🙃 In kindergarten, we learned to tell time by putting our bedtime on the play clock and I remember realizing I’d have to lie because I’d gone to bed easily 3 hours later than the other kids. I’m 33 now and nothing has changed haha. Nighttime is when I feel most at home in my brain, and going to bed has always felt like I’m missing out on something. Yet socially, being “bad” at bedtime always feels like some kind of moral failure of self-discipline. It was really nice to feel seen by this ep and not judged, while hearing some helpful tips and framings! ❤️

This episode was so calming and affirming. Felt like I was on the couch next to y'all. Honestly, just pointing out that we humans need plain ol' rest, time to explore questions & be in places we can be ourselves, and that those are legit reasons to delay sleep a bit really helps me feel more accepting & less judgey. Thank you!

For lights at night, I have dimmers in every room I can, and then smart bulbs from Wiz in other rooms. These have a Circadian Rhythm mode that changes their color temp throughout the day, and shifts to a dim, warm glow at night.

Sleep phones by Acoustic Sheep are amazing. I learned about them from " Sleep With Me"* a podcast to help you fall asleep. * I discovered this podcast from a side comment made during the podcast "Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone "

Listened to this last night and today I listened to Carnivore Ecology, so now I've learned that if I were a bear I wouldn't sleep procrastinate. And that maybe instead of calling it "falling asleep on the couch" like it's a bad thing it should just be "sleeping in my bear bed."

Wow I learned so many level-up things and related to everything!

I have ADHD and sleep procrastinate a lot. After listening to this episode, I thought i could reinstall Instagram and not feel guilty about spending some time on it before bed. 4 hours later... i uninstalled it again.

Does any one remember what the pixel fireplace thing was?

Get a Brick! getbrick.com. Best $50 I have ever spent

Once again I felt so seen by the Ologies podcast! The adhd portion and going down a rabbit hole for hours instead of sleeping left me feeling very vulnerable but understood. (Was I recently asking myself when exactly did Denmark lose Norway to Sweden based on a news story about gold statues of Mozart stolen from Vienna? Yes. Yes I was.) I’m committed to cleaning up my sleep hygiene this year. Thanks for this gem of an episode.

retterhardt

OMG. I NEED this episode. Can't wait to listen later!!

I feel you with this comment! My issue is reading before bed...I think, "I'll just read one chapter," and then won't stop reading until I finish the book 😬. I use the app Digital Detox to help with this. It locks apps I set after a certain time and I set it up to be really annoying to impossible to override. It's not perfect, but it does make a difference.

I was promised skunks. I just. want. skunks. Please?

Dr. Hill was a joy! I was intrigued with this episode although I don’t really ever procrastinate when it comes to going to sleep—waking up, is another story 🥱 😅

Chefda

I strongly resent my weak body’s insistence on sleeping. Or, as I often say “The only thing worse than sleep is being tired.”

Amanda Leal

When I am being particularly ornery I roam around my home crying about how sleep is a “time machine to tomorrow.”

I am about half way through the episode and hoping that Dr. Hill speaks about ADHD and sleep. For me it's not so much procrastination on purpose, but I often lose time before bed. Like I am intending on going right to bed at 10:00 pm and have crafted a full ritual of no screens and having a bath to wind down, but then suddenly it's an hour later!! Where did that go?? I too have had lifelong issues with sleep, in spite of absolutely loving sleeping! I have done a sleep study in hospital where they found I was "awake" every 6 minutes throughout the night but do not have apnea or restless leg. I would LOVE to be a good sleeper, a deep sleeper, a happy sleeper, but alas I am a jaw clenching exhausted human who requires an edible just to nod off...

Hilda Z.

I have the same weakness! But in reality, we are probably functioning in a healthy way. I want to be more energetic and productive at night, but alas, my brain and body says “it’s sleepy time.” And that’s probably healthy, really.

Lingthusiasm

It's definitely the "interesting people in other timezones" thing that particularly gets me when it comes to sleep procrastination! What if I miss the chance to make a little joke in response to someone else's wordplay or something by going to bed too early? (But also the needing some "me" time to recover resonates a lot)

Alie Ward

Oh and what episode?? That's so cool!

Alie Ward

Dimmers are so goated, for reals

Alie Ward

It's much more common than I though! ,Which is great to hear right?

Alie Ward

From BIRTH! Lolol. Little night owl straight out of the gate!

Alie Ward

well well well, you appear to be psychic. Hold your horses for like 24 hours, mwahahaha

Alie Ward

I am so happy for you that you're not plagued with this! It's awful but these tips genuinely help! What is your usual bedtime?

Alie Ward

We do talk about it a lot! I hope it helps! New research came out in Dec 2025 about evening chronotypes and ADHD!

Alie Ward

Ahahah! Great point -- now we know the world is awake, somewhere, and the FOMO is so much worse

Lingthusiasm

I love all the west coast people but also y'all are responsible for keeping me up to 3am on MORE THAN ONE occasion. (And then when I go to the west coast, I'm like, why did the internet get so quiet at midnight??)

Aaron Wood

Absolutely! All the lights get set to dim about 8pm-9pm.

Han O'Reilly

On Bricks, you can DIY it very cheaply. I’m not sure if the functionality is exactly the same but could be worth playing with before spending £50. I saw this tiktok about it (hope links are ok to post) https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGdxQDRv8/

First and foremost—I love your podcast! It’s really pushed me to be more curious and open-minded. Your voice is soothing, you’re hilarious, and you approach your guests like they’re already your pal, so it makes me feel like I’m your pal, too! 😊 As for the sleep routine, I basically do the things that Dr. Hill suggested, which is very validating! Usually around 8:30 or 9 is when I start to wind down. I’ll shower then read or watch TV for about 30 minutes to an hour. I’m usually in bed by 10 and actually turn off the lights by 10:30 I’m out of bed around 6/6:30–I always try to wake up earlier and it typically doesn’t happen! I’m a teacher so I’m usually tuckered out and sleep very well. My job is so dependent on me being mentally and physically alert that I can’t mess around with my sleep 😅. But I’ve always been one of those people who needs sleep. Even in college, I was not the type of person to party until the sun came up. Luckily, my hubby is the same way—as is our teenage daughter!

Well, today was sleep procrastination’s day to shine. I had the best day and did a lot of good things. For context, I haven’t shaved my legs in 2 years and don’t really regret it. But suddenly my mind was like, well wouldn’t you like soft, silky skin. Apparently my mind wanted it. So at 10:20pm still without having my dinner after doing a hard workout, I took an hour long shower to shave my legs. I immediately regretted it. At least in two weeks the hair will have grown back. But instead of feeling happy about shaving my legs, I feel like I lost something. So I wasted an hour doing something I regretted and still hadn’t had dinner by the time of writing this at 11:45pm. Sigh….

I’m realizing from this that I’m a bedtime procrastinator *not* someone with strong insomnia (except when my bipolar meds need adjusted but that’s not super relevant) and I just have a somewhat non-night owl non-early bird schedule, I just wake up earlier because my partner does first shift so I’m tired by a earlier time. But I’m not feeling a rush of energy in the morning *or* at night. Huh. Going to throw all this at my therapist today

Hey, so... the ND pull to never have the "big light" on at night is actually verified helping our sleep.

Lindsay Mixer

I've begun to dim my lights two hours before bedtime, including on my laptop if I'm watching something, and it's actually helping my sleep procrastination! What a simple yet effective idea.
