UPDATE: Part 2 is out! What happens when you've been sprayed nine times in the face by a skunk? We finally get the answer. Also should you get a pet skunk? A pet lavender skunks? Pepe Le Pew back on trial, and the proper way to watch a skunk. Let's talk. I love your skunk stories. Also skunk butt slow-mo still from the PBS episode "Is That Skunk?" is below. Enjoy.

________

We have waited so long for this episode. And it was beyond expectation.

Mephitologist Dr. Jerry Dragoo of the Institute for the Betterment of Skunks and Skunk Reputations is on the show in a precious 2-parter that is chock full of weird field stories, endearing skunk facts, and some personal revelations from Jerry that floored me. It's an absolute instant classic. Also your podmother Jarrett made us a special shirt for the occasion:

“We Meet At Last” skunk shirt by jbstink.com

Did you listen? Let's talk about it below. I can't believe it really happened.

In stink we trust,

Alie Dadward

Ps: so you don't have to wait until next week's secret: Jarrett is doing better! No surgery but in a lot of pain from diverticulitis, apparently! He asked the nurse what causes it and she shrugged "You're getting older, honey" and we can't stop quoting it.

“Of course it sprayed me! It’s a skunk! That’s what they do!” Skunks gonna skunk 🤣

I’ll listen to this one on the way home from work today. Skunks are so stinking cute! I had a run in with one years ago, when I was a kid. It wandered into our campsite while we were eating. My dad told us to stay still; we did! The skunk sniffed around for a while and walked away after a while. According to a family camped near us, a skunk attempted to get in my sleeping bag with me during the night. Thankfully, none of us were sprayed during our encounters.

Erin Everton

oh i was so hoping to see the picture of the shirt and/or car and now im delighted

Alie Ward

it's so good to learn that they keep their juice to themselves unless they're threatened!

Alie Ward

The shirt is the best, I love it so much. Jarrett made it that morning for me in our hotel room -- he ran to Michaels for supplies while I was in the shower!

I grew up on a ranch, and we had skunks. Once, when my sister and I were sleeping in the backyard, my grandmother spotted a skunk approaching us, and grabbed her trusty broom, preparing for battle. Thank God grandpa was there to talk her down, and all ended happily for all of the Earth’s creatures! I am really looking forward to episode number two!

Erin Everton

we love a side quest hahaha! i hope Jarrett’s pain improves quickly!

Matt Ceccato

Siskel and Ebert used to have a skunk on their show for the "stinker of the week." Whether the skunk actually saw the movies is debatable, but Siskel really wanted the skunk when they reviewed the 1984 version of "Dune."

Nicole Whiting

I loved this one! You can tell that Jerry was a little nervous or shy at the beginning and then Ally really wins him over pretty quickly and then he’s off to the races.

I was once riding a bus to work in Illinois and a guy got on who had just been sprayed by a skunk. Was he going to work? Home? To Menards to try to find some skunk-juice removing stuff? Does Menards even HAVE skunk-juice removing stuff? Nobody got close enough to him to get the story—but nobody complained, either. He was already having a WAY worse day than the rest of us.

I grew up in Tennessee and have seen my share of skunks. The weirdest and coolest thing I saw was an albino skunk! It was so big we thought it was a dog at first. Then we noticed that it walked differently—skunks have a different stride than dogs. And then we got a better look at its tail and without a doubt it was a skunk! No one got sprayed! But that skunk was not afraid of anything!

The striped skunks species name translating to “stinky stink” brings me so much joy 😂😂 little fart kitties 🦨💨 🩷

This episode is gold. Jerry’s first skunk nicknamed Penny… one (s)cent. 🦨 💨 I die.

I volunteer at a raptor center where a couple times a year we get a great horned owl that was sprayed while trying to catch a skunk. They stink to high hell, have a thin layer of orange oily slime on their feathers, and interestingly, they are temporarily blind from the spray. Because they’re blind, they cant hunt, so these birds typically come in starving. They get an exam and fresh meat while their eyes recover, then they’re banded before released. Though tough for the bird, it’s an easy problem to handle, and the same bird will never make that mistake again.

Do you use the term "National Treasure" in the US? Either way, Dr Dragoo is one

Staci Pinkowitz

Wow I think I would do anything to grab a beverage with this guy. He seems amazing!!!!

hisarahtops

that one got me giggling out loud!

Alli B

Your username is also the best!

Mimi

I thought the exact same thing, it was so sweet!

Samson Bergman

I can’t wait for part two tomorrow! So good.

Laura Roser

An amazing coincidence happened this morning! I was listening to skunks part two episode this morning while walking my dog and we saw a skunk! We just stood very still (like Jerry said) and watched. It was beautiful!!

Alie Ward

Let me know how you like the follow up! Also we have an episode in the works about BROOMS for Spooktober!

Alie Ward

Oh man, poor dude. I bet he still thinks about that all the time.

Alie Ward

He is so full of good stories. I hope you like Part 2!

Alie Ward

If you listen to part 2, we talk about owls!! And how in some museum collections, the owl specimens smell like skunk! Have you heard our two owl episodes with Dr. RJ Gutierrez? We also have a Field Trip episode to the raptor center in Boise you might like!

Alie Ward

100% is a national treasure. Since losing Dolly, we have a vacancy and he fills it.

Alie Ward

I hope the skunk god some popcorn. Or worms.

Alie Ward

It's amazing that they can live in the wild with that coloration, but then duh -- their stripes are aposematism so their survival strategy is the opposite of hiding!

Alie Ward

Listen to the end of Part 2 and you'll want to even more. On a lawn.

Alie Ward

You listen??? I hope you dug it like a skunk digs grubs.

Hilda Z.

Look at you, using aposematism like you own the place 😆 😉

Hilda Z.

It’s so comforting to know that the coolest people in the world are getting older and dealing with the shit of aging like me! 🩷 I hope that Jarrett is doing well, and I wish him a speedy recovery!

Laura Roser

Yes! A striped one. I live in Northern California, but have never seen one in my neighborhood (only smelled them) even though they’re pretty common here.

Hilda Z.

I love, love this dude, and I mean no disrespect at all to you, but take Queen Dolly’s place?…come on…

Hilda Z.

That is always the first question that everyone thinks of when you hear a skunk story: Did you get sprayed? We can’t help but ask it!

Katie Murray

I added my first quote (2 actually) from an Ologies podcast into my quote book usually reserved for family and friends. Alie: how many times do you figure you’ve been sprayed by skunks, sir? Jerry: about six or seven. Alie: that’s it?! Jerry: per animal. — When it comes to a skunk feeding, I’ve never seen a full skunk. When it comes to a skunk spraying, I’ve never seen an empty one. - Ologies guest Dr Jerry Dragoo.

Caroline Fox

Alright, Jerry, Merlin Tuttle (bats) and the tree guy are the top 3 most purely delighted guests. They love their research SO MUCH you can just FEEL THE JOY

SharkWithUnderbite

What a delightful episode! Good job Ali for persuading him! My skunk story: On the day my dear elderly dog was going to the vet to cross the rainbow bridge, she had one last laugh. She toddled into the yard and encountered a skunk for the first time. She somehow dodged so our other dog got the full-throttle blast. (This, by the way, was on brand for both). I arrived at the vet quite stinky from de-skunking dog number two, but dog number one was both fresh-smelling and smug.

Obilot

Oh, no doubt. My heart went out to him that morning.

Beans

Please tell Dr Jerry to try a good probiotic for his gut health. It will be a game changer for his diverticulosis and will prevent future diverticulitis!

This episode was SO DELIGHTFULLLLLLL

Mads

Alie is a really skilled interviewer in this way!

Lee Stewart

I discovered this fabulous podcast through this episode! I loved it so much I went to episode 1 and have been binging since! I LOVE this pod and this episode! I already feel like Alie Ward is a life long friend

Lovemesomechaos

Check out the personality on this guy! Wonderful episode. I love skunks and my husband has hand raised abandoned babies. When we accidentally live trap them (chicken farmer problems) we just put a blanket over them and take them back to the woods. Once we caught a mama with a baby an her other babies. Yes I wanted to keep them, no I did not.
