Call them crayfish, crawfish, or crawdads -- they're all the same. I think. I'll find out for sure later this week when I interview two biologists who study the evolution and behavior of freshwater crayfish. Leave your questions on the molting mudbugs in the comments.

We have a pet turtle (from a pet store) and once we found a crayfish in with the feeder fish from the pet store. They lived happily together until one day the title finally ate it. Is this common?

Emily Zurawski

What do they breathe?? Don’t they live in those little holes underneath the sand? And wouldn’t the waves drown them if they breathe air? Or am I thinking of a different animal entirely

Teresa Gleason

I grew up in rural Indiana (late 60s early 70s) and we spent many hours catching crawdads in the creek. Some were used for bait and I turned many loose. I found that if I gently lowered a cup behind them, then put my hand in front they would throw themselves backward into the cup. I thought I was so smart, but in reality I was most likely just smarter than my fellow hunters. I remember some of them being really big, was that just a result of my childhood perception?

The Grandmother Hypothesis

Relationships between males and females? How many babies? Where r they found? What do they eat? Where do they snoooz??? Or lay eggs? Where is their house???? What their address?

Aunica Sherwood

Not a question but just so thrilled about this episode! We live in Missouri and spend our summers in creeks and rivers catching these bad boys and admiring their beauty

I have an impressive amount of these crayfish, for lack of a better term, towers around my studio. I see them at night walking about and ever so occasionally have them walk into my studio. Is there a purpose for the clay "towers," or are they just a artifact of burrowing? I love seeing them.

IM SO EXCITED FOR AN EPISODE ON A TYPE OF CRUSTACEAN I LOVE AQUATIC LIFE!! How/why did the marbled crayfish develop parthenogenesis? How effective is parthenogenesis? How does it fair compared to other means of reproduction? What does their digestive system look like in order to filter various foods and microorganisms through mud? Why are their gills placed near their legs? What is the benefit of the placement and having more than 2-4 gills. How do crayfish perceive or "see" the environment around them? What is their primary sense? What is their social intelligence like? What is your favorite attribute, fact, or behavior of crayfish? (Or the most niche/interesting?)

Ernesto Diaz Jr.

I know it's highly contested, especially in South Louisiana, but is it better to boil them or steam them?

Anna Taylor

What differentiates marine from freshwater crayfish?

Anna Taylor

Do crayfish have interesting larval stages like crabs? If they are planktonic like crabs in their larval stages, how do they disperse in freshwater?

Brenna Pixley

What are their burrows like in winter ?

Brenna Pixley

How do help them proliferate? Also my 10 yo wants to know how many are eaten by racoons 🦝?

goblinprince

why is it so hard to eat them… is there a proper way to do it?

Kirsten Magnuson

tell me about the brain (or whatever nerve cluster they got in there) and what do you think about crayfish consciousness?

Brittany Briceño

Do crayfish molt? Or do their shells grow with them?

poisonedcheerios

Why are they purple after molting??? I found one that was almost blue!?

Brittany Briceño

How many species of crayfish are there? How much do their sizes vary? Are their colors impacted by their environment?

Fiona Rogge

In New Zealand we have crayfish that are quite big and look like lobsters- are they the same? Are they different? What’s going on?

Alli B

Do your ologists eat crayfish themselves? I’m always a bit stunned when someone who studies an animal also eats them. This is not meant to be judgy, but I realize it does sound that way! I’m genuinely curious about the psychology of it.

Steve Jobs

which are older, in terms of evolution, crawfish, or lobsters?

Cian verbridge

Why does electrofishing have such little effect on them. I do a lot of near shore small bodied fish sampling so they I see a lot of them. They never seem to get stunned like fish or even other inverts.

Cian verbridge

How far across the lake bed do they typically go. I’ve set gill nets fairly deep past what I assumed they would venture and they still pulled up with tons of these lil buggers in them. Also I call them lake locusts because of how quickly they can pick a net clean.

Harry Bolton

Does oil in the boil, make it easier to peel them and what is in the tube that goes along their back?

Alice Munn

Are lobsters just fancy crayfish?

Amelia

in australia we call the saltwater ones “crayfish, reds, painted or greens” 😂 and freshwater ones are called yabbies¿? are they similar like fresh and saltwater crabs are similar or are they quite different?

The Farming Linguist

If it looks like a crayfish and it acts like a crayfish - can I eat it? Or does it have any dangerous cousins I should know about (thanks, sincerely a person who caught and ate "crayfish" from a nearby river 10 years ago, without even considering that I don't really know how to identify crayfish. OOPSIE! But still kickin'!)

Nicole Robb

Are they technically bugs? Please say they are technically bugs!

Sarah Chaney

Do they make any sound? Any noises to communicate with each other? [backstory on this question - Living in Covington, Louisiana as a kid we had crawfish in our yard and my dad convinced me that I could call them out of their holes by cupping my hands around my mouth and making a certain "caaaaw" sound. Mostly he was having a laugh watching me make funny sounds over piles of mud in the backyard. Luckily I have a fond memory of this now]

Sarah Chaney

They are an invasive species in rivers, ponds and lakes in Colorado -- how did they get there!?!?

Astrid Robertsson

First time question asker here, Why do so many countries (or seemingly most of Europe) not eat crayfish? As a Swede it’s a thing we do every August and yes they’re a bit of hard work to deshell but they taste so good!

Mugdha Yeola

What are their towers all about? How structurally sound are they? What do they keep inside? Do we have access to blueprints?

Mugdha Yeola

What's the difference between them and lobsters? 🦞 Who is it in the emoji?

Anna Taylor

What exactly is the crayfish plague? It was brought to Europe and the UK by American crayfish species originally broygh over for food.

Andy Pepper

High among my fave animals!! Why the mounds???? And do some build mounds but others don’t? They’re such an intrinsic part of the landscape of the Deep South.

Andy Pepper

How close are they to lobsters, evolutionarily?

Andy Pepper

I know platypus depend on them—are there other random animals whose diets are mostly crayfish?

Andy Pepper

Guests: crayfish, crawfish, or crawdad? DISCUSS.

Andy Pepper

How cold can they take it? Again, they’re so southern it makes me wonder if any species like the cold.

Andy Pepper

I’ve heard there are a ridiculous number of species and new ones can be found anytime you go looking. What’s the species count now?

Anjali Himali

I will find crawfish krotovina (burrows) in east texas all the time, and some of them will be 3-5 feet underground. How are they able to live so deep underground? Why do they? Are they able to breathe underwater?

Jenny Leigh

I am also interested in their evolutionary bend. Are Crayfish a relative of spiders? - How many million years ago did they diverge?

Stella The Turtle Loving Lesbian

Are the ones that I find is rivers in Massachusetts the same as the ones they eat in the Louisiana? Can we be eating them in Massachusetts?

Nathan

Why do Nashville crayfish (Orconectes shoupi) choose to venture into the open during daylight hours when doing so seems to put them directly in harm’s way?

Addie Cappello she her

Cool!! I once saw a crayfish near a small pond in a semi-suburban, wooded area: how did it get there? And what was it doing outside the water? What’s the life cycle? Do they have instars? How tiny are baby crayfish and how big can they get? How long do they live? Where did the name “crawdad” come from? How nutritious are they? It seems like many wildlife species eat them, but humans have to eat a lot of them at once for sustenance. Is this sustainable? Does the saying “stuck in your craw” have anything to do with crawfish? But are they even fish? I know in SE states like Florida, barred owls will make meals of crayfish- owls are great at swallowing smaller prey whole, but other wildlife might not have the same advantage. How menacing are their claws? Baby pinch? Moderate inconvenience? Big ouch? I don’t know much about crayfish and I’m excited to learn all the things!! Thank you 😊 Addie (she/her)

Tommy McElrath

How are they related to the rest of the Crustacea? Also what is your preferred common name since "cray-fish" is obviously misleading and not taxonomically accurate?

Christina Popowych-Ebert

Hi there! How big can crayfish get? How many places in the world can you find these critters?

Marc Rubin

Are crawfish a type of insect? Why are crawfish boils celebrated occasions yet nobody ever comes to my cockroach boils? Also, please do an episode on veterinary gerontology with my lovely wife, Dr. Ashley Portmann of Home Together Vet! We would catch them when the creek behind our house would fill up with water and they'd all suddenly appear. I distinctly remember one we caught, we were looking at it in the bowl of water we plopped them into to watch them and it had a worm coming out of its head??? We were horrified and I've never been able to suck the heads when eating them bc of this memory. What in the world was that???
