Ever heard of Mothman? He's a cryptid like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster who was spotted in West Virginia in the '60s. I have an opportunity to tour the Mothman Museum and interview the curator and I'm thinking this could make a good Spooktober episode. Got any questions on Mothman?

Do people still approach you today with brand-new, modern sightings of the creature, and how does the museum document them?

BENJAMIN

Have people gone to therapy (or more intensive help??) for mothman trauma? You know, maybe mothman should get into therapy! We all need it sometimes.

i'm excited to hear about the Mothman's relation to the Silver Bridge collapse in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. My grandma grew up in PP in a house at one end of the bridge and so I always heard about this creature growing up.

Is there any particular genus of moth that the ologist thinks would most closely match the traits of Mothman?!

First-Time Question Asker! Asking for my cousin, AJ, who worships Mothman: Though the name "Mothman" indicates half-man and half-moth, is he truly and biologically 50/50 of each species, or does he lean more towards one than the other?

Chase Penix

Why is this the only cryptid that genuinely makes me waiver on my cryptid agnosticism?

What all is there to know about Chief Cornstalk of the Shawnee people? He cursed the land as he was dying in the late 18th century legend has it...

Who is he and how did he come about. What is his M.O.? Is he supposed to be able to predict the future?

is he a specific species? or what species would he be related to?

Has anyone ever gotten a picture of the Mothman?

What led to mothman and other cryptids becoming so beloved in the LGBT+ in neurodivergent communities? Also, a lot of cryptid legends stem from real life animals being mistaken for strange creatures, is there an animal that inspired mothman's legend?

Taylor Clinton

Is mothman an inter-dimensional being? What evidence is there, or is it just a theory?

Just letting other members know about a cryptid miniature golf place in WV: https://www.cryptidmountainminigolf.com/ I have yet to go!:) Also in Kittanning PA is the bridge where part of the mothman prophecies movie was filmed. A mothman diy road trip tour sounds fun.

Is there any species, moth or other, that sightings of mothman could be? Or, is it possible that he is the result of something common with cryptids and folklore: there is something dangerous about the area he lives in and the tales are to ward people off with myth rather than fact?

Rachel Houston

The ballet company here in Charleston, WV is about to premiere the Mothman Ballet next month, wonder if Mothman liked to dance? My question is about cryptids in general - are they modern America’s minor gods? Instead of dryads or loa or any number of supernatural entities - America now has regional cryptids. Just a thing humans need to do or are we desperate for a good tourist attraction? WV has several lurking around; we really like our adorable phenomenon.

What is Mothman’s diet like? Would he like cotton candy? Asking for a friend.

If Mothman was smashed against something would he turn to powder like a moth?

Do other cultures/countries have a similar mythological creature? Is the legend of mothman relatively recent or does it have a deep history? Why is he so cool?

Addie Cappello she her

What in the actual….??? Full disclosure I had to use the Wikipedia link. Never heard of this, but did wonder if it was based on some bird sighting. I was going to go with owl in the night but sandhill crane works… Why “Mothman?” And why a man? Why not Mothwoman? Was there some horror movie based on this thing? What does the Mothman museum hold? Are people still searching for this creature? Or has it just become tales of the legend? I currently live in the PNW and people are weirdly obsessed with Bigfoot… why do these elusive creatures hold such a place in society? Don’t get me wrong, Harry and the Hendersons is a childhood favorite, but the real life obsession for some people is… interesting? I await this episode for a full educational opportunity because I am fully unaware of the scope of this beast. Thanks! Addie (she/her)

What plants should I plant in my garden to attract a mothman?

Another question... Why did people assume it was a man? Did he have pronounced antennae? Or was he just pantsless? Now questioning where Mothman would shop for pants...

Oh I am SO excited for this!! (Picture of my favorite Mothman item attached, if it'll let me.) Are there any creatures in folktales or urban legends from other regions that are similar to Mothman?

I'm an Australian and I'm like whaaat?! Sounds horrifying. Also is it cynical that I nodded and whispered " the 60s" ?

Longtime mothman lover! Ill keep it quick and cute; why mothman so sexy? Why do we humans find these cryptids so alluring in general? Is it to do with mystery and myth or is it maybe a fear response? Thanks dadward!

Jae Steinbacher

Adding to the heap of people asking, why is Mothman so sexy?

Would Mothman have an exoskeleton that looks like a humanesque exterior? No way moth wings could hold a skeleton up right?

Lauren Cooper

Has the ologist ever read mothman smut? How do we feel about it? 👀

Batty

Did the original mothman sightings also include a connor-storrie-esque dump truck? Or is the mothman statue’s absolute CAKE just artistic liberty?

Batty

Why was he eventually called mothman when the original descriptions were more bird like?

haille ragusa

How in the hooting hollering heck did this all start ?! How many cultures celebrate him?!

haille ragusa

I only know the meme. what is his lore

Emily Lamb

Why’s he so hot tho? Like, David bowie or Claude cahun hot; we say “he” but he seems comes off super mysterious and androgynous(at least to me) maybe it’s because he(cryptids in general?) transgresses every binary our human minds can not even begin to comprehend?

Brooke Legg

Where did the name Mothman originate? I know it was coined in Point Pleasant, WV, but why did he get the name? Considering moths are generally small, and Mothman was described as being big with red eyes, it’s a bit ironic in my mind. I am a WV native and grew up always wondering. I feel a deep connection to all WV cryptids including the Flatwoods Monster and skinwalkers and believe they are 100% real. I grew up being told if you hear your name in the woods at night to not look into the trees and start running. We all have such a deep appreciation for and connection to the land around us and it just fascinates me the lore we grew up in. Are there any connections between Mothman and these other creatures? And why do West Virginians feel so connected to them in a positive light?

Sarah Merkle

Are there any verifiable reports or other compelling evidence to back up the theory that the original sightings were due to an unusual migration pattern of sandhill cranes that were misidentified as Mothman? I have a tattoo of a sandhill crane casting a mothman shadow and I am so excited to hear this episode!

Björn Fredberg

Why is Mothman presented as something scary? What's with the long claws?

Judy

Does he have a mate? Did he have a Moth-er? Is he mean and leaves holes in Sheep?!! Does he linger near porch lights? Did he have a cocoon? Does he leave that moth dust stuff on your sweater if he hugs you? Does he have BIG antennas so you can listen to Spotify commercial free if you’re sitting on the porch when he comes for the light?! I have more but I’ll give others a shot…. Oh oh oh, is he afraid of Zappers? Wait a minute…. W Virginia! Dang, that’s just an ol’ biker I’ll bet!…… Love your PC, Judy Dixon, just west of W Virginia and North of Lake ONTARIO!

Does Mothman...bang?

Why are cryptids so prevalent and long lasting in our culture? And why is it often "facts be damned" with them? FTQA

So do we think Mothman was a result of alleged secret government experiments at the West Virginia Ordinance Works just north of Point Pleasant? So glad you're finally making it over to our weird & wonderful West Virginia! You've gotta check out Hillbilly Hotdogs while you're over this way and explore the TNT area where the WV Ordinance Works used to be.

Carrigan Richards

What is the origin? Is there any meaning that comes with seeing it?

Long time listener, first time question asker! Do professionals think mothman is malicious or benevolent? He seems scary in older media but modern media makes him fun and cute. For instance, my little pocket mothman:

Magda Kossowska

What is it with America and cryptids? It seems there are so many but I haven’t heard much about local legends in other areas (save the Yeti). Maybe they would be considered mythological or spiritual, whereas American settler history is too new for that connotation. And for that matter why do we call them cryptids?

Keerat Singh

How do you decide what goes in the museum?

Marc Rubin

Are there any pop culture references that depict Mothman in a more friendly, less terrifying way? It's not hard to find t-shirts with images of Bigfoot doing rad activities like riding a mountain bike or shredding pow on a snowboard. I'm not so sure a Mothman stuffy would make a great gift for a toddler.. Also, please do an episode on veterinary gerontology with my lovely wife, Dr Ashley Portmann of Home Together Vet in beautiful Gunnison, Colorado! https://www.instagram.com/p/CtweGRZuZeW/?igsi=MWtwNzc2NGkwMXIxeg==

Mindy Corcoran Turley

Why does the mothman statue portray him as having such supple butt cheeks? Is that actually documented in the sightings or is it just because he’s often seen in a squatting position when harbingering doom?

Gardener Gabbi

Are there any ancient references to mothman or something similar? Or is it a more modern story? How far back do the legends go? - first time question asker
