El Niño has formed in the tropical Pacific. The sea is unusually warm and the consequences can be felt across the globe.

I happen to be in Atlanta for a chat with Dr. Marshall Shepherd of our Meteorology (WEATHER & CLIMATE) episode and he's agreed to spend some extra time with me to answer ologites' questions on El Niño. Is there anything you want Dr. Shepherd to explain about this current weather phenomenon?

⚠️ Deadline: Sunday, September 6 at 5pm PST

⚠️ QUESTIONS ARE CLOSED

If you're in the Atlanta area, here's more info on the talk I'm doing with Dr. Shepherd at the University of Georgia Tuesday, September 8 at 3pm. It's FREE and open to the public:

Why do they call it El Niño?

Isabelle Fitzpatrick

Is this why it’s been so dry in Florida this year? Usually we get our daily 4pm thunderstorm and it’s sunny again within the hour, but it’s been insanely quiet this summer… we just started getting our storms for the year and it’s a weird feeling!

Reuben Clamzo

How is El Niño effected by climate change? What will the cycle look like in 50 years?

CandaceCCW

Why are weather patterns genderized??

Austin Johnson

Is El Niño more prominent or less with climate change? When was the last time it was “normal”? Also, how fucked are we?

Yogo Mel

I’ve seen a lot of mention about the impact this will have for those of us on land, but what is this going to do to life in the Pacific? Can they escape this ocean heat wave?

Demi Espinoza

A lot of people plan travel during the winter months, what’s the best sources to look up forecasted impacts of El Niño in different countries ahead of time and still be a responsible traveler while abroad?

Laura McLean

Can you talk a little bit about ocean heat storage?

Luke LaFemina

Will it actually snow more in SW Colorado? It was so dry last year!

Paul Hoffman

When the weather folk say "next year will be an El Niño", what is the likelihood that they are correct?

Wesley Graves

If climate change didn’t exist and we could experience this exact same El Niño, what would actually be different? How much of what we experience is El Niño itself versus El Niño interacting with a warmer planet? Love you. Okay byeeeeee.

Megan

Put it to me straight: how fucked are we?

Greg Stafford

When does the average of 2 to 7 years just become every 2 years based on recent events?

From my boyfriend Nathan: Do all other tropical storms bow before El Niño?

Anna Batie Kuka

As a PNW (WA and OR) skier, how bad will our ski season be?

Dave Brewer

What are the processes/conditions that cause an El Niño/La Niña, and that alter the strength of the phenomena from year to year? Thank you.

Riley McInnis

Do you like the SUM41 lyric: "stormin through the party like my name is El Niño" in Fat Lip?

Greg Walloch

I was once in a grocery store parking lot here in Los Angeles when a sudden gust of wind kicked up. Right then, a mom yelled to her kids, "Get in the car, children! El Niño's coming!"—and they absolutely scrambled inside. I always think of that moment anytime I hear El Niño mentioned. How do meteorologists (and moms) actually know when an El Niño cycle is officially beginning?

Hilda Z.

How is it possible to predict weather phenomena like El Niño? When/where/how/why did El Niño become El Niño? It has been crazy hot where I live (Kentucky), is this because of El Niño or is it because of climate change? Do all parts of the globe feel the effects of El Niño, or does it only affect certain areas?

Cori

I was watching a tv show about living off grid and the guy was claiming El Niño was going to cause a huge wet winter in one place and a flooding wet summer in another (exaggerated danger for both). I couldn’t tell how real that is so ig the question would be - Across the US what are the potential major impacts or dangerous seasons due to El Niño? Are certain risks exaggerated a lot or not worried about enough?

Nicky G

What is the difference between El Nino and La Nina? Is one cycle more likely to cause more destructive storms?

Ara Victor

When did El Niño start? I know it's cyclical, but how far back can we track that cycle?

Steve Haskin

Was the El Niño responsible for the climate during the 1930s drought that was the climate cause for the dust bowl or were we even measuring El Niño or el Niña then?

Jenna C

Does this *Super* ENSO have the potential to turn into another scenario similar to the ‘Blob’ event? We are already seeing signs (hammerheads, large yellowtail, dorado, more turtles) of this marine heatwave in SoCal!

Robin Kuehn

How is knowledge on El Niño affected by huge reductions in meteorology staffing and weather research funding in the US? Will we know if big storms are coming?

CamK

Can you talk about the impact on snow/skiing in Western North America, Europe, and Japan?

CamK

How does it affect glaciers? Do we see significantly more melting in El Niño years?

Marc Rubin

I've heard that El Niño tends to produce great ski conditions during winter in the American West. Is that true? If so, why? How? Also, Alie, please do an episode on veterinary gerontology with my lovely wife, Dr Ashley Portmann of Home Together Vet! Aren't you curious about what vets can do to help our furry children through old age and into the great beyond? https://www.instagram.com/p/DWzoIBulT1h/?img_index=2&stkn=YTZqbmllNXhxb2Ji

CamK

NOAA has a great prediction on El Niño and La Niña, can you talk about how they make the predictions and how far out we can predict accurately? How has the accuracy changed with improvements in technology?

CamK

How does El Niño and La Niña affect the health of life in the ocean? Are there any species that boom in certain parts of these cycles?

Sarah Martin

Can you debunk the climate deniers' myth that climate change is just El Niño? Also what's the difference between el Niño and la niña? And whose children are these?!

HeyKay

Hey ako,

Jenna Congdon

How is El Niño predicted? Like what factors make experts go "ope, here comes el niño". Also why the heck is it called that?
