Headed to Portland to interview a few ologists, so get your questions ready!

What do you want to ask the apiologist (aka: bee person?)

Comments

Zoe Teplick

My mom used to find dead bumble bees and keep them in a box under her bed when she was a kid. Not a question, just a creepy fact I thought I’d share.

John Worster

I take honey from local honeybees to help with my summer allergies, some of my friends don't believe that this really works. Could you please settle this disagreement for me ?

Julie K. Rose

Is there ever a situation where you'd need to kill off the queen? If so, why?

Julie K. Rose

And also: if you kill off the queen, can you introduce a new queen to the system?

Emily Barnett

Do bees know they’re going to die when they sting you? Or do they just sting people and then go ‘aww nuts’.

Eric Blanc

I want to help the bees in my area. What's a good resource to find out the proper wildflowers to plant for them?

Pengwenpenguin

Have you ever seen the Bee Movie? If so, what are you opinions on it?

Victoria Patterson

Is it actually good to keep bees? Is there a kind of bee/type of bee keeping that is best?

Greg

What's the current situation for bee populations in America and the world? Last summer, there was a break in colony collapses and I was wondering how we are doing, what we learned since then, and where we are headed in the near future?

Michelle Sullivan

How does a bee interpret and decode the meaning behind another bee's waggle dance?

Steve Y

And is the waggle dance meanings specific to a colony, or are some of the moves universal?

Al Martinez

I am sure you already have this question written down. But what is the current situation regarding the bee population? Is it getting better or worse? And what can we do to ensure their survival and that they are able to get back to the numbers they were before

what-bird

Weirdest place you’ve seen or heard of a hive being? Like, in the ground, abandoned vehicle etc

snooks

Is there a reliable rule of thumb for when to stop working soil in a garden or yard, to avoid disturbing wintering bumblebees? A couple years ago I uncovered a hibernating bb while doing some late Fall work and still feel horrible.

Kimberly Minton

How would I start up my own hive, and are there better climates to have a hive?

Thomas Pico

I know living in California that we have a seal that assures us the olive oil is pure from a reliable source. Is there a seal for honey that we should be looking for to know the honey is 100% and not mixed with nefarious ingredients.

Jill Kerswill

Is the human consumption of honey good or bad for bee populations? On the one hand, we’re farming them and creating safe spaces for them to live, but on the other we’re stealing all their magical juices! Also, why are bees fuzzy?

Bob

Is there any chance of getting a replacement species for European honey bees if they do end up dieing off. Even if it is not for the honey but to pollinate

Jessi Pehl

Will eating honey that has been harvested locally really help if you have seasonal allergies?

Kilian W

What’s the best way to get your start in beekeeping in an urban environment? Locally, we have a company called Best Bees that maintains the hive for you, but I want to learn the ins and outs for myself

Meaghan Walsh Gerard

I want to have bees SO BADLY. Can a DIYer leave the honey in the hives and basically leave them alone (checking for pests occasionally) or do they need to have the honey removed? What is the LEAST amount of work I can do to have happy, healthy bees that want to pollinate my fruit trees and flowers?

Meaghan Walsh Gerard

Also, why do they get "lost" if you move their hive only a few feet away?

Zach Tarble

What's up with the waggle dance? Do artificial lights affect bees in the same way it affects moths?

Max Pacheco

How can I help make insulating homes with active beehives a thing? (My last name is pronounced puh-cheek-oh)

Christa Avampato

Do bees feel emotional distress when beekeepers harvest their honey, honeycomb, and royal jelly?

Christa Avampato

Other than becoming a beekeepper, is there anything we can do to support healthy bee populations?

Rebecca Hall

I've recently started a vegan diet. Should I give up honey?! I get so confused when people ask me...do bees mind me snaffling a lil bit of their honey?!

Carrie Stuard

What are your thoughts on the "Bee Movie" with Jerry Seinfeld?

Irene B

I keep seeing information in the news that the bees are waking up too early because of weather changes (getting hot too soon)! How dire is the situation? Are there things we can just do in our everyday life that helps the bees out?

Katy Bock

Are bees actually more attracted to bright yellow clothing? I wear a safety vest for work and was told that an orange vest won't attract bees like a yellow vest does. Is this true!?

Colette Ayers

What's with the Queen Bee? can there be more than one queen bee? is she super sassy? What innate behaviour makes all the other bees want to protect her?

Jared

I've read of bee species that will gather in a ball and increase the local temperature in order to cook wasps or other invaders. 1. What is that mechanism? Does it involve their wings or some other function? 2. How do they not cook themselves in the process?

Miranda Ashley

I’m looking to move to the Big Bend area within the next years. Can you keep bees in the desert?

Mads Clement

How can I explain to people that bees are pretty much harmless (aside from ppl who are allergic to them of course)? I just want people to love our fuzzy friends but I'm not sure how to do it.

Christa Avampato

Thanks, Miranda! I have always wanted to keep bees but in NYC it's a tough thing to do so I'd love to find other ways to help our buzzing friends!

Mary Ann

I know that bees dance to tell other bees directions, but do we understand this dance? Like could we watch a bee dance and know where it went?

DandelionGirl

what is up with vegans and honey? if the idea of ethical vegans is to cause no harm (like even sheering sheep not just killing them for meat) then why is providing a safe home and caring for them conceded to be not vegan?

Mike Melchior

A few years ago, I heard a lot about "Killer Bees" but nothing as of late. I can't imagine they just went away. What's the scoop with these guys as they do sound a bit terrifying...

Becca Bee

Bees are my favorite. I've been called Becca Bee since I was teeny tiny by my grampa. So tell me the most amazing and best thing about bees, please. Is it honey? Matriarchy? Dancing? Those cute fuzzy buns?

Jared

Or maybe their excellent pollen pants? This is a great question and I’d like to know the answer too. 🙂

Becca Bee

Pollen pants?! Eeeee! Adorable.

Francina Martinez

I've heard and seen ads for Flow Hives. It's supposedly easier and more bee friendly than traditional honey collecting methods. What is your thoughts on these devices?

Radha Vakharia

How exactly do bees make honey from pollen? What's the process?

Eva

Is it true that honey never expires? What is it about honey that makes it antibacterial?

Eva

How are bees affected by pesticides targeting other insects (eg. DDT, DEET, etc.)?

Adam Wright

Have you read the Ender's Game series? If so, how do you feel about the depiction of the formics and the hive queen? If that's your bag, is there a species/class of bees that most closely resembles that fictional representation of the hive mind/social structure? Also, how bout those bees in Brooklyn that live by the maraschino cherry factory and produce bright red honey as a result. Not a question. Just weird.

Who was Moses Quinby?

David Sinnett

In a past life, I worked at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Every so often, in the morning, we would see a mass of bees in a tree that would disappear at some point throughout the day. We never disturbed them, but often had to explain the spectacle to freaked-out guests if the tree was near one of the paths. We were told to tell inquisitive guests that a new queen had been born in an old hive, and she was moving out to start a new one of her own. Which, I assume was true to some extent. If that is indeed true, how does she convince a portion of her sister bees to leave the original hive? What switch gets thrown to initiate this? Also, why are hornets such dicks?
