I'm interviewing a dendrologist (!!!) in Seattle tomorrow so hit me with your treeeee questions, my beloved and amazing patrons! I will ask as many as time allows and I usually go down the list in the order they come in!

Very excited about this.

Heather's Fanclub

How can we encourage trees to fight back against over exploitation. I'm thinking of the French bocage but there are other examples

Euan Munro

Not really a succinct question, but I'd be interested to hear about the biome of trees and how a trees life helps other micro/macroscopic organisms survive.

Laura Renaud

So I’ve heard that we’ve learned that trees and other planets throughout the forest are interconnected, and have a way of communicating with one another/sharing resources. Is the same true for like, trees in a neighborhood? Like it my tree just chatting with my neighbors tree?

Jason Pettis

I've heard the Bradford pear tree is one of the most popular for new housing developments, and yet one of the worst choices of tree to use. Why is it so bad, and what are better choices to use instead?

Diana Dow

Chinking in on the trees communications with one another. Is it only through the root systems? Then how doe they keep that crown separation thing going?

Radha Vakharia

Why do only some trees lose their leaves in the winter?

Diana Dow

Chiming in, CHIMING in - damn autocorrect!

Jack Kelleher

I live in New Jersey. What is the “prettiest” tree to plant in my climate.

Jessica Geisler

Tree rings...what's the deal?! :-P No seriously how do the rings translate to the age of the tree and is there an actual correlation or is that all BS

Tyler Q

What is the point of maple syrup from the tree’s perspective. Is it just normal sap that happens to taste nice?

Tobias Milton

I second this question! Great one

Tobias Milton

Are there other trees that use the drop-root function like the banyan tree?

Casey Handmer

How far back can dendrochronology measure? Can we use it to constrain the movement of early humans to agriculture?

Jennifer Buz

What is the spatial scale a tree record is good for? I.e. can you learn just about the grove the tree is in? The forest? The state? How does this vary by species? Do some trees draw in more environmental inputs?

Jennifer Buz

Why is a Joshua tree not a tree?

Jennifer Buz

What's the deal with tree tumors? Are they really tumors? Are there tree oncologists?

Josh Bruce

Are there certain trees that are better for the environment than others?

Ken Klehm

Why is old growth timber so much denser than younger timber?

Julie Victoria

Are there particular tree species that are better for dendrochronology than others?

AngieB

Are tree roots really as deep as the tree is tall? How old is the oldest tree? If you haven’t discussed petrified wood, can you explain how wood becomes petrified?

Jordan O

Apart from maple, are there other trees that produce yummy syrup? Do they taste very different? Also, what endangered tree species would you like to see come back?

Julie Noble

I’ve had a few crafts beers with spruce in them, and I swear the spruce makes my tongue numb. Am I imagining that? And if I’m not, what in the spruce makes that happen? (And who thought it was a good idea to flavor anything with Christmas trees?!?)

The Project Project

If your dendrologist were to be a tree, what would it be, and why?

Colette Ayers

Can you explain tree dating and how it is possible to work out how old a tree is and how this was discovered? Also what is the widest tree, tallest and the oldest tree?

Greg

How did we learn about biocommunication in trees and how mycorrhizal networks developed? I'm fascinated not only by that information, but how scientists figured this out. I'm also curious where you stand on "sentience" in relation to trees and plants. I've seen arguments on both sides.

Mark Donahue

Wow. I’m a horticulturist, and work with arborists, and have been in the industry for over 20 years. I’ve never heard of Dendrology. I feel so clueless. Learn something new every day. I look forward to this episode!

Mark Donahue

I actually can answer many of these questions but I’ll be quiet. Haha. Sshh.

Mark Donahue

No no no! All that does us inhibit the trees natural healing process. Never do that.

Christopher Barley

If one day I decided to wear a pot as a hat and roam the great states planting random trees, which type of tree would be best for the environment to plant? Would it perchance be an apple tree?

MacaroniArt

Third this question! Secretly hoping they speak in Entish like the Ents in Lord of the Rings.

Doreen Ullom-Buchan

What Apple tree variety would be good to plant if I am hoping to help prevent an old variety from being lost.

Zak Martellucci

What's the deal with the tree-fungi relationship? Is it true that fungi often play a role in helping to manage nutrients between the trees in a forest, redirecting some for trees in need, etc.? Tell me more cause I love fungi but also trees.

Heather Husen

Emerald ash borer, pine beetles, Dutch elm disease. What's up with those? Are we planting too many of the same species? Is any tree safe from bugz?

Kimberly Hudson

I've lost four trees in the past three years! What can I do to keep my trees healthy, in general. (Live in the south-east, suburbs)

Eva

What do sustainable forestry practices look like? What are the effects of deforestation and how can we prevent this from happening? Given that many trees are K-selected species, how can we "reforest" areas that were formerly farmed/logged/etc.?

Ronda Grizzle

Why can't you grow a pink dogwood tree from a seed that came from a pink dogwood?

Mark James

Are bonsai trees actually trees or are they shrubs with pretensions?

Bob

Have you ever done any dendro chronology? If so what is the oldest tree/thing you have dated?

Rachel Walwood

are all aspen trees connected through their roots and are actually just one organism.?

James

It's fascinating that trees "talk" to each other, but what it the physiological difference between talking & non-talking trees?

Aeriel Belk

What is the difference between all the different oak trees? Specifically, why is it called a "live oak", as though all the other oaks are dead? This is something that has confused me for a long time.

Meaghan Walsh Gerard

Crown shyness... coolest thing ever? Also, what's up with the new story that trees have heartbeats?

Gillian Page Jefferson

Hiiiii, just curious, are there certain types of trees that produce more oxygen than others?

Matthew Weldon-Gamble

Out of all the seeds a tree produces each year, how many on average make it?

Jason Wiley

Could trees become sentient given enough time?

Eric Fenner

Is the future of our native US forests as grim as it sounds with all the invasive pests and diseases hitting hemlocks, dogwoods, ashes? Is there hope?

Rachel Lynn

Can you ask about tree communication? Do trees communicate with each other? Is it inter or intra-species communication? Do trees have a immune system, is it similar or different from other organisms? Do trees have simbiotic relationships with bacteria etc? (Obviously you don't have to ask all of these.. just any of the above. Lol)

Topher

Right!? Or harm them? I’m thinking like cork harvesting... 🤔

Craig Curry

If it's not too late I would like to hear more about mycelium and that relationship as well as communication between trees.

Megan Younce

Can we talk about Banyan trees??! How they seem to grow so differently than other trees, connecting to make one giant tree. They fascinate me!

Ashish Panse

I am in denial that there is a study showing that too many trees in the Sierra Nevada forests are adding to the California draught. Could you please pull me out of it by saying that trees are not the problem here? Thanks!

Christa Avampato

I read the book The Hidden Life of Tress by Peter Wohlleben. I was amazed to learn that trees communicate w/ one another, share nutrients, and use biochemicals to call allies to help them fend off insects! What are some other amazing abilities that trees have?

Maren Mossman

Moss only grows on the north side of a tree, true or false? As a Mossman, this is very important to know which side of a tree I should gravitate toward.

The Project Project

Could you ask about wood as an engineering material? Fatigue cycles, fail rates, etc?

Annika Harrison

Maybe too late, but did they ever hug a tree? :D

Annika Harrison

And in my history studies I heard there is a giant dendrology-year-database to analyse in which year a tree was cut (i.e. if this wooden boat can actually be from 1400 AD or is much older/younger) - is that true?
