I'm in Detroit and shooting at the Henry Ford Museum all week, and I do believe I'll get to chat with someone about motherfucking TRAAAAINS. Leave railroad/train/locomotive questions below!

Comments

Maren Mossman

Whhhhy is the US so against trains? I heard it was something about the automotive industry being lame...?

Celestia Lyman

My husband is an engineer. I’ll be looking forward to this one!

Spencer Toth

Why was I told as a child that putting salt on a train track was illegal?

Tyler

If high speed trains become a real thing in the US, how much faster could I get up and down the west coast? How long would Portland to San Francisco take?

Al Martinez

What is the current thinking on high speed rail in the US? Both cross country and in high population states such as California, Florida and Texas.

Not-Poignant/Pia Foxhall

Why is there such huge variation in train track sizes / widths all around the world? Wouldn't there be some standardisation as we find out what's safer? Or are the pros and cons depending on different tracks and no real consensus? (True story, almost every different state / territory in Australia uses different track gauges meaning that interstate rail trips can be a blast. Except not).

Greg

What are the main challenges to implementing PTC and once in place, will that allow for more advances in rail technology here in the US? Do you think that waning car culture among younger adults will someday create the shift necessary to increase rail's importance in American mass transit?

Dain Goding

Did anyone do more to kill trains as a viable option for passengers/commuters in America than Henry Ford?

Mary Ann

Why doesn't America have high speed trains to get around the country? What would it take to make it happen?

Bethany G.

"Iron horse-ology"? lol I love it.

Mikey

Okay so do people really press coins on train tracks? Is that even possible or just a weird thing they do in movies?

Nancy Hankel

Back in the day, how did they decide where to lay the track for train routes? Do most train tracks follow rivers?

Jennifer Buz

Why do the trains go too fast sometimes (& derail for example)? Is there not a good way to limit the speed on certain parts of the track?

Casey Handmer

I <3 trains!!! I once spent 5 days on a train. What is the northern most and southern most train? What is the highest altitude train? What is the oldest functioning national rail network? Do trains have a hope compared to high efficiency electric trucks on public roads?

Jason Kaw

Why do they block roads for so long

Lindsey

Why were villains in old movies always tying people to railroad tracks? Was this something people were actually afraid of??

Lindsey

Also just very curious to hear about trains in movies, tv, music, literature generally.

Mark James

Is the future of trains MagLev? And if not that, what is?

Katie Cobb

What are trains doing when they block an intersection for 45 minutes? Is the conductor taking a union regulated lunch?

Julie Noble

How is it that people who live near tracks don’t hear the trains anymore? Is that at all dangerous or problematic since the whistle is supposed to alert people that the train is coming through? (I live a block and a half from a track and will be on the phone, windows closed, and the other person will say, “OH MY GOD, IS THAT THE TRAIN?” and I seriously don’t notice it.)

Carrie Stuard

Why do commuter trains like Chicago's Metra have to rent track time from the railroad lines? Why is there so much freight train interference during rush hour? How much freight is typically moved throughout the US or a city in a given day?

John Worster

Back in the day, railroads seem to have become the authority for setting the correct time in the country, how did that happen?

Meaghan Walsh Gerard

Trains are so cool. Why is the damsel in distress always tied to a train track? Is John Henry real?

Rhianna Croucher

You wouldn't be afraid if you were tied to train tracks?

Hereiskarl

My 6 year old is asking if there will ever be a real Thomas the Tank Engine. I think what he's going for is will we see AI with trains or will we stick with humans?

Christopher Barley

What is the current state of train self driving AI? Cars are nearly there when it comes to self driving and trains seem like the ideal candidate for this tech. What percentage of trains are self driven these days and will it ever be 100%?

Eric Polk

I have heard that some of the older steam locomotives had cast iron boilers and that we do not know how they were able to make cast iron objects that large. Is this a technology lost to us today?

Eric Polk

When I look at old maps of the U.S. from the '50s and '60s, there were rail lines everywhere. Now it seems like 90% of those rail lines are gone. What happened to make all the rail lines disappear?

Betsy Lang

I loved the one train trip I took -st Paul to Chicago- and noticed the lack of security and luggage checking. Why is the safety theatre so toned down compared to airplanes?

Aeriel Belk

Trains are pretty cool, but they roll through my college campus all the time during class and are SO LOUD. I get that they want to make sure no one is on the track, but do they really need to be blowing their horn constantly while going through town? We have guard rails and everything.

Logan Buie

I feel like in movies there's a trope of the hippie/nomad/free spirit who hops on a freight train to "get off the grid." Do people actually do this? What is the history of this idea of hippies and trains being connected?

Lindsey

Ha! I would be very afraid! I meant was this something that was actually happening, was this a way that people were being murdered?

William Chase

Since modern diesel - electric trains generate huge amounts of electricity, couldn't they be used as emergency generators in disasters?

Brooke Danielle

Why do you think it is that trains more than any other form of travel are so often features in movies? And what is your favorite movie that takes place on a train?

The Project Project

1) How long did it take before rail gauge was standardized in the US?

The Project Project

2) Why was steam abandoned as a motive force for engines? And, related, was steam a fully mature technology when it was dropped in favor of the internal-combustion engine?

Jennifer Dorsett

Why do children under 4 - boys in particular- seem to have such a fascination with trains? Are the trains hypnotizing our young??

Laura Mulligan

Were train robberies really a thing or were they just made up in Westerns?

Ted Vician

Don't forget Greenfield Village. Has the Wright Brothers shop, original Ford factory floor, etc. It's been over a decade since I've been there, quick look at website shows that they've added a lot.

Steve Goodwin

Great topic. My question is what would it take for the us to have effective passenger train service like Europe?

Mikey

Ahhhh! How does it not fall off the tracks??

Mikey

Are you on the Facebook group?

Euan Munro

I work for an environmental consultancy in the UK so spend quite a bit of time on trains and thinking about energy - often at the same time. Do electric train regenerate electricity when they brake (like hybrid/elec cars)? Is that just with never models?

Darren Massa

I don't have a question, but "the study of iron horses" might be my new favorite etymology.

Will Gunther

Do engineers every get tired of sounding the whistle? Based on their liberal use of the whistle near crossings including AFTER the crossing.... I'm guessing it's awesome

Michael Kierce

What is the numbering system for older steam locomotives, such as 4-4-0?

Michael Kierce

Are there any diesel or gas locomotives that aren't electric? Meaning the engine power drives the wheels, not an electric generator?

Annika Harrison

Is this old history myth true? Myth: Because of the Ancient Roman roads the European railway system, that got adapted to the US, has different measurements than the Russian railways system. Hence the different space programs had a lot of differences transporting stuff, because they could transport it differently. (sorry for my chaotic sentence structure)

Elizabeth Bassett

How do trains stack up in terms of efficiency and cost against semi trucks? Are there things that can only be transported on trains?
