Yes, deltiology is a thing. And its all about postcards. I'm at the Henry Ford museum in Dearborn for the next few days and one of their curators specializes in old weird postcards so leave me your questions, fam!

Like, wtf, right?

Do you get many 'saucy' postcards, or illicit postcards? I remember that being a thing in the past, does it still happen now?

Al Martinez

Postcards bring to mind a certain nostalgia when people would always send them to friends and family to share their vacation experiences. With social media so prominent has the out romance with postcards faded?

Al Martinez

Also why do some people collect other peoples postcards? And how large are the biggest collections

What is the most common specific location for post cards and if it’s something, like, mind-blowingly out of the ordinary from “the Empire State Building!!!” Or “the Eiffel Tower!” ...wow, why? What? Wow?

Jenna Ericson

ALSO: Is there a personal favorite local that you think deserves more postcards than it generally has? (Clearly I enjoy travel postcards...)

Mark James

What postcard has taken the longest to be delivered after posting in the history of postcards?

Katie Cobb

I live in Dearborn and I'm a short bike ride away from the museum and village! Welcome. So I know postcards are likely very convenient because they didn't require an envelope, but whatever you're writing to your loved one is clearly visible for everyone to see! Were there ways people tried to make their postcards more private from prying eyes? PS:Try Ford's Garage. It's really decent food for a heavily gas station themed restaurant.

Lindsey

Were/are there famous or sought after postcard artists?

Julie Noble

What are his/her thoughts on PostSecret? Also, are the oversized ads I get from political candidates, heating and air places, the YMCA, etc. considered postcards? (I might be less annoyed when I recycle them if I think about them as “postcards” instead of trash mail...)

Carrie Stuard

What methodology do you use to curate postcards? Subject filing? Chronological filing? What are the most common search terms used in finding postcards. (Records manager here studying for the CRA/CRM certification right now)

OMG I LOVE POSTCARDS! I always send them on a trip, and I always send one to myself. (I also love mail stuff in general). Story of the postcard that got lost for the longest? Or made the longest trip? First postcard? How to post offices do the hand-off of mail across international borders? Do they keep a tally, "We delivered 14 postcards from France and 12 from Germany, so they owe us $20 in postage?" How did companies partner with photographers from the locations? Did the photographers freelance with Yellowstone to take photos of Old Faithful for postcards?

Eric Polk

Some really old postcards have color pictures on them. How did they color the old photo postcards before the advent of color film? Was each one hand colored?

Dave Miller, PhD

are postcards (and the postal service) doomed?

Betsy Lang

Can I decorate my own postcards? Or get a thick paper stock and designate it a postcard?

Megan C.

Are there postcard specific stamps?

Lauren Blanchard

I mean, it's not really a question, more of an observation - I guess post-cards were like social media from way back in the gap. Like, give your friends all the FOMO. But one of my favorite pastimes is sitting with boxes of old photographs in antique stores and just looking through them all. Apparently photos were processes to be used as postcards - so you could send your boo a picture of yourself at a picnic or whatever - or so I assume? What's the deal with that.

Stefan Titus

Do you get excited when someone sends you a postcard?

Logan Buie

Do you think mail carriers read the content on postcards? Similarly, is it the weirdness of the postcard design/image or the weirdness of what people wrote to each other more interesting to you? Both?

Tom Maher

When was the hayday for postcards?

Emma Fiori

Is PostSecret the greatest thing to ever happen ever? Or at least in the post card world? (Answer: yes it is!)

Emma Fiori

Also, how did postcards get started?

Laura Mulligan

Is there a "most valuable" post card out there? Like how there are valuable stamps depending on conditions or if they were stamped the first day they were released, etc.?

Liz

Has anyone ever been committed of a crime from what they have written on a postcard and a mail person discovered it while sorting/delivering?

Ted Vician

Ask if they have any of the "Black Hand" postcards. The Black Hand used to be a pre-Mafia gang that got so big and dangerous that they were considered a threat to US national security. Members of Congress started getting postcards warning them about the Black Hand, which eventually turned out to be an advertising campaign for a soap company.

Alexis Rivard

Do you see a resurgence of postcard usage like there was with vinyl records? Or has the use been pretty steady even with internet communication?

Mara Spensieri

Do you think the mailman (do we still call them that?) reads our postcards? I always write them a little note to say hello and thanks!

Euan Munro

I'm pretty stoked about this episode. My friend stated sending me postcards from their trips abroad and I've started returning the favour because it's fun. Anyway onto the questions - I remember the Vatican Post Office being popular to send postcards because it's the one place to get a stamp from there. Does that Post office have the highest volume of postcards? Or at least the highest ratio of postcards to other mail?

Mandi Bradford

Has advertising taken the magic away from postcards? I only ever get them from my dentist or veterinarian for my dog

Annika Harrison

What is the oldest postcard they have? What is the weirdest?

Gillian Page Jefferson

I don't have a question, I just wanted to say that it makes me really happy that this is an ology. AND where was your podcast 20 years ago when I was "deciding what to be when I grew up" because holy smokes, I would have seriously considered Deltiology.
