Got questions about eyes, vision, eye health, lash extensions, robotic x-ray vision implants? BRING 'EM. Wonderful ol' friend and eye-fixer Dr. Reid Wainess will be on to talk shop and I very much plan to ask him if looking at my phone too close is making me crosseyed. (Reid, don't answer that yet.)

Also later tonight, SNAILS is will be up! Thanks so much, dear patrons, for being so supportive and encouraging. As you know I loooove making this podcast but the last few months I've been juggling (I think?) 4 other jobs. I'm beyond giddy to get to shoot the projects I'm shooting but am next-level tattered from a few months of flights and early call times and long shoot days. Things are slowing down a little and will get easier but Ologies is always my priority and I just want to do all the topics justice.

The good news: this week I got to record Egyptology, Oology (EGGS), Kalology (BEAUTY), Epidemiology (DISEASES), and Ferroequinology (TRAINS) and so we have some really good ones coming up for y'alls.

Thanks again as always for listening, and f you have suggestions, let me know. Unless the suggestion is to make fewer dad jokes because NEVER, suckers.

I love y'all tho for reals,

Popward VonPoddie

Is lasik an option if you have astigmatism? Also, can you really get a weed card for glaucoma? Asking for a friend.....it me.

Everest Chamberlain

Ooh please please ask mine! I was born with a cataract and have amblyopia that causes my brain to not use that eye as much when both are open. Do you have any info on new treatments (surgeries? Stem cells?) that can restore vision when the eye problem is also a brain problem?

Tyler Q

My friend has a glass eye and has to get it replaced every few years. Why is that? Do they deform or degrade over time?

John Worster

What exactly is a cataract, and are certain eye colors more prone to get them?

Katy Mehl

My eyes get kind of itchy after putting on mascara. Am I slowly blinding myself? What is in mascara and is it bad for our eyes?

Jessica Bomgardner

My eyes are green, but sometimes I think they change to blue or gray with what I'm wearing. Is that totally bogus or is it really "bringing out my eyes"?

Anna Thompson

Do contacts make your eye sight worse over time or was that just something my parents told me so I would get glasses instead of contacts as a high schooler? Does eye color affect your sensitivity to sunlight? Do blue eyes make you more sensitive then having brown eyes? Who is the best podcast dad out there? I can answer that. It's you Ali! Seriously your podcast is my favorite and always jumps to the front of my podcast player. And it's quickly becoming my husband's favorite too! Thank you for all your work educating the masses, I know it's hard work!

Susan Curro

How bad are lash extensions for your eyes? Professionally done, not the $50 deals some sketchy salons offer.

Bob Carleton

2 questions : 1. what's up with "floaters" and is there anything you can do about them, and 2. what can I do to prevent those occasional headaches right behind the eyeball (may not actually be eye related) Oh and one more -- is there anything wrong with cheap mail order prescription glasses?

Lauren Eggert-Crowe

How can you keep the whites of your eyes super white? What causes them to be yellow, dingy, or bloodshot?

Julie

What habits and/or foods can the average human do to extend their eye health/strength?

Maria Kumro

How come you can wear some contacts for extended periods of time but others needed to be changed or discarded more frequently?

JN

Are we close to a surgical solution like Lasik for presbyopia?

Rebecca Wancelotti

No matter how many times I get my sight checked, I can never see as well with my glasses as other people. Is that just a thing? Is it possible to just never attain 20/20 with glasses?

Justin So

Why do our puplis need to be dialted for eye exams?

Maren Mossman

I work with high powered infrared lasers in my lab, so we are very strict about wearing laser safety goggles when we work. I heard if you are blinded by a laser, you see a flash of green and then hear a “pop” before everything goes black. Is there any truth to this? I want to be accurate when I scare visiting children into never looking into laser beams.

Brooke Danielle

How concerned are you with screen time and the dreaded "blue light" that I keep hearing about? What are things we can do to mitigate any negative effects to keep our eyes healthy?

Maria Kumro

Ooh another one that bothers me! How come I have such shitty vision and my parents do as well, but my brother has perfect vision? Why did I lose this genetic lottery?

Rebecca Wancelotti

Also if you replaced a human eye with a bionic eye that was capable of seeing a wider range of the electromagnetic spectrum, would the brain process those as new colors or as something entirely different or not at all?

Katie Cobb

Can you explain what blind people see, or rather don't see? Is there any way to restore sight to someone born without it/ lost it at a young age?

Scott A. Metzinger

Two questions… The first is how close are we to getting retina transplants and two if he’s gaming community are making things better smaller etc. why can’t we use that technology for people totally blind or largely visually impaired.

Greg

What is an upcoming breakthrough in technology or research that could cure/prevent common eye ailments?

Jack Kelleher

I had lasik 14 years ago. I slacked on going back to my eye Dr. Superstorm Sandy flooded the basement my records were in. Why can’t my Eye Dr “tweak” my eyes? He says because the records were destroyed he can’t. True? Or BS?

Christina Shuy

what causes astigmatism and what can be done to minimize the effects?

Paul Ohainle

I had an unsuccessful vitrectomy in the early 1990s, any advances in treatment of epiretinal membranes/macular puckers since then? (This is not a vasectomy joke)

Zak Martellucci

Is it true that your eye balls are the same size throughout your life?

Carrie Weber

Are daily contacts actually better for eye health than weekly or monthly ones?

Jordan O

Why are so many people nearsighted? Is it really just genes? Or does 'nurture' have a part to play?

Mikey

Okay I have a dumb question, how does surgery help correct a lazy eye? I had corrective surgery on my left eye when I was a kid and I’ve honestly never known how it helped, just that it did.

Lindsey

I’m also curious about blue light. What is it, is this an actual problem? I was getting horrible headaches almost every afternoon at work, and after trying a bunch of other options I bought blue light blocking (“blocking”??) glasses. And no more headaches! It could’ve been something else that I was doing I suppose.

Briana Pfaus

How do the pinholes on the occluder work when they are checking your vision?

Lindsey

How does the dreaded air puff test determine your ocular pressure?

David Sinnett

What led to the development of LASIK? I had the procedure done earlier this year. Very happy with the results. Even with having to watch my eyeballs get shaved open and then smelling burning tissue. No wonder four different people asked if I had been given my Valium yet.

Aki

Why is looking up at the sun a bad idea? Is it worse to look at the sun during a solar eclipse?

Liz

Is there any function for the iris to be different colors in different people? What led to being a range of colors from brown to blue?

Alyssa Bean

I am an artist and focus up close on my detailed work for hours. When I try to view something in the distance it’s fuzzy. I’ve tried reading glasses when I work to help magnify my art but the glass is obstructing. Should I invest in prescription glasses or will that glass bother me as well? Nervous to take the leap.

Danny Kang

What parts of vision and the brain get wired to cause synesthesia?

Liz

Are there more people with glasses now because of tv, phone, computer screens? Or is there another reason? Orrrr, has the number of glasses wearing people haven’t changed?

Becky Milliner

How can the brain adjust your vision with just one contact in? Example... one eye sees up close & the other see distances. Mindblowing!!

Sean & Josh Grandinetti

Imagine life evolving on a planet without a bright star close enough to have immense light every day. What would be the most plausible type of vision to evolve in this space? Our eyes obviously use light to create an image of our surroundings.

Hilarie Mazur

Why do some newborns' eyes change color in the first few months? Is it always blue to brown or can other things happen?

Taylor Mathis

Is Lasik surgery actually worth it? I have heard that over time your eyes will revert back to the way they were before Lasik.

Heather Hutchison

what is astigmatism exactly and what does it effect??

Julie K. Rose

There's a story Johnny Knoxville tells (don't judge me) that he got an (inevitable) head injury during a stunt and then later when he sneezed, his eyeball popped out. Is this really possible? I mean...it is Johnny Knoxville, so you never know.

Allison Bray

Piggybacking on this comment to ask, how safe is LASIK, really? I don’t want to wear contacts forever but also don’t want to risk ruining my eyes!

Jordan Werme

My eyelashes are long and some of them curl inward, which irritates me more than if they were to not curl inward. Eventually I end up yanking them out to stop the constant irritation. So, like, what the heck? Also, what are floaters and how can I send them away from my eyeballs? Thanks.

April Fahr

How does Latisse work? I thought you just painted it on your eyelid skin to make the hair grow thicker. But a listed side effect is possible darkening of your eye colour. Should people be fooling around with this for the sake of spidery lashes? :O

Tom Maher

Do you have any recommendations on dealing with and minimizing ocular migraines?

Belinda Kuo

Two questions please! 1) When I went in for LASIK, the doctor asked what I wanted my vision to be (seriously??? Like why is this a question?) and I said 20/10 or 20/5. He said the best I could get was 20/20. Why is this? 2) when I was young, my mom said that reading books in the dark would make me have glasses. I did need glasses. Was she right??

Dawn Doherty-Affleck

Will my eyes ever stop changing?? I got my first pair of glasses at age 8, my eyes continued to get worse until my mid 20s, but now in my mid-late 30s they’re now getting “better” (except for my astigmatism, it’s getting worse). What’s the deal??

Sara Wells

Oh man, please ask this Alie!! I always feel like I’m answering wrong and messing up my prescription.

Sara Wells

OMG, so many questions! 1. I’d love to hear about the differences between human eyes and those of other species. What is it about some animals’ eyes that afford them better night vision? Are some animals able to see more colors, farther distances, more detail? 2. Once or twice a year I get these massive floaters that look almost like screen pixelation vibrating. They expand slowly from a dot in the center of my vision to a hollow circle. And the circle grows until its outside my field of vision. Then it starts over again from the center. WTF is this??? I don’t get migraines so I guess it’s not that. Should I be worried? 3. I hear you should not use Visine and other products because it actually dries out your eyes. Why is that? And why would this company make a product that does the opposite of what it supposed to? What drops are ok to use? 4. Are carrots and kale actually good for eyesight, or are people just trying to get us to eat her veggies? 5. Every day I get a little bit of eyeliner goop in the corner of my eye and sometimes even globs of it right up on the eyeball. I don’t fully understand how it gets from the lid to the eyeball, but my question is whether this is really bad for my eye?

Zoe Elewitz

According to my ophthalmologist, the sclera does not feel pain. So why is it then that when you get a fricken tiny particle of dust in your eye hole, it feels like tiny elvs are stabbing you with adorable tiny daggers? This all came up because I have a blood vessel in my eye that burst at birth. Sometimes when the vessel touches my lower lid I can feel it and the sensation drives me mad. The doctor said this isn't possible... I know I feel something! Am I crazy?

Zoe Elewitz

Is anything physically happening to our eyes as our vision changes? And what is it that makes our vision change over time? Why would some people be born needing glasses while most people are born with "regular" vision. What makes this happen?

Michelle Frisch

A few years ago a friend told me that Fetty Wap lost his eye to glaucoma. This isn’t a question but it has been one of my go-to fun facts ever since and I thought you’d enjoy it!

Aeriel Belk

I always get these painful Sty’s in my eye. What’s that about?

Barbara Blackie

my eye doc says I am getting "pinguicula", which I get, but why is it called that? As a part-time botanist I am know that Pinguicula vulgaris - is common butterwort. Is there a connection between this plant and the bumpy ridges emerging in the corner of my eye? (and can I make it stop?)

Rachel von Morrigan

What makes people colorblind and how do the new glasses, like Enchroma, work to correct it while wearing them?

Hilary Blake

I second asking number 4. :D

Hilary Blake

Was there anything in your training that stood out for you? What gave you that 'yup, this is what I'm here for' moment?

Olaf Doschke

Trifocal lense implant once and for all? Or better stick with reading glasses? (I don't mean the latter literally)

Colette Ayers

why do we get floaters and can these be removed? Does everyone get them?

Mary M.

What's the deal with detached retinas? Why do they happen? Can they be prevented?

Jess Flowers

My eye dr offers additional tests that aren’t covered by any insurance. Like a macular degeneration test. Are they worth getting done?

Rachel Walwood

I once read a book that suggested that certain exercises could strengthen your eyes and make it so that you don't need glasses. Absolute bullshit or "yes you can experience small improvements"?

Caroline Gifford

My Dad recently lost vision in one eye because of some sort of cholesterol build up. How did this happen? Does our overall diet/lifestyle affect our eye health?

Adrienne McNicholas

Companies are offering "blue light" screen glasses to protect your eyes from your computer, ipad, iphone, tv. The claim in the pitch is that Blue Light is just as damaging to our eyes as UV rays and our poor peepers are unprotected. Truth? Or Snake Oil Salesmen sellin' cures to problems that do not exist?

K3ndyl

why do they squeak when you push on them

K3ndyl

why do they sometimes hurt in the morning like they've been working out

Melissa Lyons

I know other people are asking about it too, but how effective is LASIK, really, short-term and long-term? What should someone know before getting LASIK or questions they should ask their eye doctor? Also, floaters in the eye, when should you be concerned about them?

Ashley Maniaci

Can your irises change color? For example sometimes when I cry or get very upset my eyes appear to be a darker blue green than usual.

Olaf Doschke

I think I could answer that in advance, but why not leave the question open for the interview, it's a good topic to be in there.

Olaf Doschke

The same goes for much of office/computer work. There is an obvious advice, but lets leave that open.

Eva

Why are some people light triggered for migraines and seizures? Is there a way to prevent this, other than avoiding light in general?

Keith T

I recently has LASIK corrective surgery. I like to think there was a magic laser that fixed my vision (especially after learning about them cutting flaps in my eyeballs). What the hell did they do in there? And who was the first guy to think shining lasers in someones eyes was a good idea?! (It was)

Tyler

Lots of great questions here already so I’ll just ask why did my ophthalmologist tell me that one of my pupils was larger than the other? She immediately said it doesn’t affect anything and that it’s fine, but like, wtf? Now I think about it CONSTANTLY and am self conscious about my pupils!

Julia Butler

Can I blame my poor parallel parking skills on astigmatism in both eyes?

Howard Yermish

If you have had LASIK in the past, what kinds of things should you do (if anything) differently than just getting regular checkups?

Kira Lichtenfeld

1 or 2 or about the same. Worst. Questions. EVER

Kira Lichtenfeld

What are the little black marks that seem to be floating in front of my eyes. Where do they come from and is there a way to get rid of them? I thought LASIK would get rid of them but it hasn't. Also, night blindness. What's up with that???

Reyna Hester

Is there an ideal age for LASIK? and if you get it done too young...will you need it when you get older? Is it even considered for people under 18? Do carrots REALLY help with your vision and if yes , does it improve vision? does it help maintain good vision? and how much would l need to consume for it to make a difference?

Christopher Barley

Not sure if this is an Ophthalmology question, but I would love to hear more about how the brain interprets and sometimes makes up its own signals from the eyes. I.e. when you turn your head quickly either direction, you don't see a blur of images, you effectively go blind until your brain can catch up. Same thing when you look at a second hand on a clock. The first second seems to take longer than the rest because your brain is "making up" that image until it can catch up.

Becca Bee

Aren't eyes the coolest thing to look at up close? It's like a whole galaxy in your face. Is it more interesting to see a healthy eye, or are not-perfect eyes more captivating? Like, do my narrow angles make for a cooler picture?

Zeke Sikelianos

I once saw a Richard Feynman lecture about how human eyes are able to perceive "5 photons' worth" of light. What would our vision be like if we could perceive individual photons?

Jennifer Daley

Could the episodes in Black Mirror happen? For instance, the eye-link which allows the person to block another individual from their actual vision (they can also be universally blocked to show they have committed a crime).

Dave Miller, PhD

I'm late to the party but here goes (who knows, maybe uncle alie will start at the bottom of the list this time): what would you consider to be the most significant ophthalmic development or discovery? I used to work for an ophthalmic surgical company so the IOL seems like it would rank up there, but that's why we ask smart people dumb questions.

Dan Engler

Just in case the number of times a topic is mentioned counts towards it being asked, I too would like to know what the state of the art is re: floaters. Being on the cusp of 40 (fuuuuuck) I've noticed a gradual increase in the visibility of floaters and I'd like to know if they can be vaporized with lasers or whatevs.

Reuben Clamzo

I am very nearsighted and have worn gas permeable hard contacts for 30+ years. Now I need reading glasses on top of them. Would Lasik or a similar treatment be helpful, or do multifocal lenes work well enough to ditch the readers?

Anne Simonen

I have one nearsighted and one farsighted eye. I seem to have problems with depth perception at medium to far distances, whether or not my glasses are on (although when they are off its worse). Is that because of my prescription, or is it just me?

Melanie Stadt

My Rx is -14 and -14.5. Number one -- next time someone complains they had to get LASIK because they were soooo blind, can I slap them? Number two -- are gas permeable lenses REALLY the best option at such a high Rx? I've heard people saying they switched back to a soft lens, but their prescriptions are all better than -6 even though they claimed to be "legally blind."

Melanie Stadt

Another question... My eye doctor has mentioned that if my daughter shows signs of getting as high of a prescription as I have, they can put her into physical therapy so she might end up with a -5 instead of a -14. What exactly happens in this therapy, and does it actually work?

Jonathan and Amber Meade

Why are people with lighter eyes more sensitive to light? Also, my husband (Jonathan) was recommended by an eye doctor to wear yellow tinted glasses to help with glare off of headlights at night. How/why does that help?

Anna Mc

EMPHATIC SUPPORT FOR THIS QUESTION. I'm super nearsighted, and told I'm at risk for retinal detachment. How likely is that to happen? And, more importantly, what can be done to prevent it?

Tarmo Toikkanen

Floaters? Also, how many eye professionals nowadays get eyesight corrective surgery, and which technology?

That's Weird (edited)

2026-09-15 06:00 (sorry if this was already asked, haven't scrolled up yet) As someone who had LASIK done 6 years ago, is it really safe? My anxiety has convinced me that someday I'll get "eye cancer" or my eyeballs will just melt out of my head.

Lisa Krolasik

If it helps, I had very horrible eyesight (started with glasses when I was 9 years old) and in 1999 when I was 35 I had LASIK. I still don't need glasses except for reading like everyone does when they get old.

Sasha Chihak

What makes the cells in my eye ball decide to over-react an produce pterygium? My doctor says its not a big deal but I mean really why?

Codi Schmitt

What are the blackspots that sometimes appear in my peripheral vision?
