Tomorrow, while I’m still in New York for the tiniest sliver of time, I am SO STOKED to interview ocean conservationist Dr. Ayana Johnson about how to save these dingdang seas. Check out her work and pop a question in the comments and I’ll rapid fire as many as I can.

Might just spend the first 40 minutes fangirling tbh.

2026-09-15 06:00 I would like to know if it's true that the finding Nemo movies actually lead to the species featured in the movie being depleted in the wild

When cutting out cancer how do you know if you got "it all?" It seems like it would be hard to see. Do you take a little of the tissue below it?

Not-Poignant/Pia Foxhall

Do you feel more or less hopeful about ocean conservation these days? Marine plastic is getting a lot of attention now which is great, are there other areas of conservation you wish would get the same notice, or that really need the same notice?

Anthony Stull

Does extra meltwater from the glaciers help to dilute the CO2 (or acidity) of the oceans?

Anna Thompson

If humans disappeared from the earth tomorrow how long would it take for the oceans to get back to base line? With base line being before we started overfishing, polluting and being general dicks to 70% of our planet

Anne-Sophie Caron

How would you suggest a biologist go about getting a foot in the science policy world? How do you juggle the scientific and social aspect of policy?

Christina Shuy

favorite part of job? least favorite? why did you want to do what you do? what can we do to stop the damage we have already done?

Maria Kumro

How much positive impact on marine plastic debris will the plastic straw ban really have?

Natasha Bharj

The sea is deep and terrifying but what is your favourite creature/phenomenon from the darkest depths of the ocean? Also -is there a difference between a sea and an ocean?

Jordan Duhe

Follow up Nemo question. I always enjoyed the depiction of the East Australian Current as like a tubular highway and thought it was a cool way to animate something that may be hard to show visually. I'd be interested to know your thoughts: a neat depiction? wholly inaccurate?

Rolando jacuinde

Why does thinking about how expansive and how little we know about the deep ocean give me anxiety?

Becca Bee

How bad have we fucked up the oceans? Is it salvageable or are we just playing a sad waiting game? It makes me really emotional to think about the disgusting and terrifying things down there who are going to die because people are assholes.

Radha Vakharia

How do we encourage beach-goers to not litter? What can beach side establishments do to help not contribute to this? I mean that's literally dumping trash into the ocean. :(

Mads Clement

What's the most interesting section of the ocean to you? (like. surface level, coral reef ecosystems, plankton, the weird stuff that goes on in the deep sea, etc)

Aki

How much does the ocean contribute to the world's oxygen? Are we causing any damage to the process that contributes to the generation of oxygen from the ocean? Should I start stocking up on oxygen tanks?

Kira Lichtenfeld

I live by one of the great lakes, and a common thing to do growing up is searching the beach for lake glass. I'm seeing lake glass is a lot more difficult to find these days. Could this be due to the push in recycling for the last decade?

Ana Bestvater-Norton

I've heard of jelly fish being considered as an alternate to more conventional water dwelling food sources. Would jellyfish be as robust a food source as we think or will will fish them to within an inch of extinction like we do everything else? (<a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/jellyfish-numbers-need-eat-them-population-mediterranean-silvio-grecio-british-people-sting-a7891996.html)." rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/jellyfish-numbers-need-eat-them-population-mediterranean-silvio-grecio-british-people-sting-a7891996.html).</a>

Cody Woppenkamp

This may be a stupid question. But why are oceans salty? Where’d all that salt come from?

Brooke Danielle

Is "sustainable seafood" really sustainable in your experience? As a native of the PNW I love seafood, but part of loving it means eating it responsibly. If I'm following sustainability guidelines, am I eating correctly to prevent overfishing?

Neal Williams

What is a sustainable practice for an average person to do that can help the oceans?

Sara Meredith- Smere Tactics

How can the average consumer play a role in saving the ocean/ what products should we be most concerned about or steer clear of when it comes to health and sustainability of the ocean

Charlotte Milling

One of the most obvious (to me) and tangible effects of rising CO2 levels (i.e. global climate change) is ocean acidification. Where changes in temperature and precipitation patterns, fire cycles, and species distributions can take longer to manifest and be more difficult to distinguish between correlation and causation, ocean acidification seems to be SO MUCH MORE clear cut. Why is it not getting the play that it should in developing policy and crafting messages to society?

Julie

Will we ever see something like Sealab 2021 or are theoretical Sealabs only going to exist in our minds until we discover some space metals or new enhanced materials that withstand pressure better than what we have now. Which one happens first; long term deep sea research lab construction, or Mars colonization? What are the greatest challenges to discovering new ocean life? aside from observation limitations like time in the environment and light dispersion… so, I’m thinking more along the lines of migratory patterns we’re unaware of, undersea caverns that we cannot observe through satellites and mathematical understanding of the ocean floor…  are there any ocean creatures with behavior similar to locusts? Are there any promising ideas about making ocean exploration more cost effective than space exploration?  It seems to me like it’s really difficult for people to get funding for ocean exploration comparatively.  Will it take something like a newly discovered electricity to point humanities resources in that direction?

Rachel von Morrigan

So I watched James Cameron take his specially designed sub to the deepest part of the ocean floor. On decent he sees less and less critters and at the bottom, when the milky sand dissipates, there’s NOTHING. Not a dang ol’ thing. Could there be more, smaller critters living in the deepest parts of the ocean? At some depth point does it stop being oceanography and start being a study of earth and land?

Rob Smith

Hi Alie, what does Dr. Johnson think is the best method to rid the ocean of plastics? Are the efforts of someone like Boyan Slat and his Ocean Cleanup project worthwhile, or is it too good to be true? Are preventative methods better?

Aeriel Belk

HI! I'm interested in how whalefalls affect the ocean ecology. I know that they have a big impact on the microbiome while they are active, do they have any impacts on other aspects of ocean ecology?

Makenna Hopwood

What's Dr. Johnson's favorite memory associated with the ocean? What is the most beneficial thing we can do to help save the oceans?

Blair Nelson

What is going on with the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and is there a plan for cleaning it up? Is that even possible? It feels very overwhelming and insurmountable.

Blair Nelson

How bad is the overfishing situation right now? Should we be eating less fish? Does Dr. Johnson have any thoughts on eating farm-raised vs. wild fish?

Anna Mc

And, is there anything else we should start banning that could help?

Craig Curry

Uh... Seems about right for my day. Left the burner on my stove for about 4 hours earlier. Thanks.

Christin McAdams

I’ve been following the story of J35, or Tahlequah the Orca who has been carrying her deceased baby and it blows my mind and breaks my heart that they grieve like humans. Is she at risk of dying if she can’t let go of her baby?

Carrie Stuard

Yes, does supporting a group like 4Ocean really help to clean up the ocean of plastics?

Eva

What should we be doing about the massive islands of plastic waste that are in the ocean and washing up on shores? And what is happening with microbeads of plastic that reach the ocean?

Reuben Clamzo

I heard that a bunch of rubber duckies that fell off a cargo ship in the Pacific made their way through the Northwest Passage. How will the melting of the ice sheets affect currents, and what would that do to the climate?

Elizabeth Anderson

How will climate change affect ocean current patterns such as the gulf stream, and what will that mean for worldwide climate? Also, how did we discover the Marianas Trench and how did it form?

Greg

Which oceanography discipline do you think will be most influential in protecting marine ecosystems and overall ocean health? There are so many problems! From pollution to global warming to overfishing, I don't even know where to begin. A lot of the issues are political, but what can oceanologists do outside of that?

WiGeekMom

What is your thought on the plastic straws debate? Will a plastic straw ban *really* help the world's oceans, or is it just a feel good attempt at doing something? I've seen the video of the sea turtle with a straw in it's nose. And it horrified me. I also have friends who rely upon straws to be able to drink or help their kids drink.

Lauren Eggert-Crowe

Is the Pacific *really* calmer than the Atlantic? I know that's how it got its Western name but is it true?

iolanthe

When will we go further into the deep sea? What do u think lives there?

iolanthe

How can we save the great barrier Reef?

Kathleen Jones

Is it still safe to eat sardines? My partner is worried about mercury, but not enough to Google this for himself.

Billy Marino

Do you see any role for history, specifically Environmental History, in helping scientists interested in conservation and science communication make compelling cases to the public? Or even in helping scientists better understand how cultures have interacted with their environments in the past, and how we can better interact with it today?

Joe Porfido

why does the appearance of the surface of the ocean look different day to day. Specifically what causes the different colors and textures one might see on any given day.

Danny Kang

Should I not wake up in the middle of the night worried about changing patterns of ocean salinity? Is it the end of all life as we know it?

NZNutmeg

What are the most common sources of plastic pollution in the ocean?

Nelson Chan

How much ocean have we explored so far? How far down is the plastic pollution affecting the ecology of the ocean?

Casey Handmer

Follow up - why has the amount of salt in the oceans remained super stable over billions of years, even as the atmosphere has done some truly funky stuff?

Casey Handmer

Why do some people prefer to live in the ocean? Like long distant yacht people.

Euan Munro

What's one of the simplest things we can do to help ocean health - not eat fish? Recycle our plastics? Drives less? Or something else entirely?

Shah

(Full disclosure, I am in that photo sitting next to Ayana and I SORTA know what she thinks about this) BUUUUUUT I would love to hear what she thinks about the how new technology and innovation can be used to help us understand the ocean, protect the ocean, and (most importantly) connect people to the ocean and the currently plight it faces.

Shah

Oh man... the Boyan Slat stuff is controversial amongst marine folks

Shah

(also say hi to Ayana for me! Shes amazing)

Devon Sereda Goldie

What effect is sunscreen having on the oceans? And what can we do about that?

Kennedy

Hope I'm not too late... I recently watched a doc about a kelp-farmer, basically he rented a plot of the ocean and used it to grow kelp, which he then sold as food. The farmer (Bren Smith) said that this is an innovative way that we can use the ocean as a tool to sequester carbon (I mean, more than it already is), and combat climate change. Anyway, I guess my question is have you heard of kelp farming? Do you think its a good idea/ sustainable way to use the ocean? Can kelp be the new kale???

Emily M

Crap, I'm probably too late, but.... WHOLPHINS??? I saw something that said that dolphins and whales are mating??? Is this real? Why is this happening?
