TRAINS. The history, the lore, the myths, the marvels. Get into it! Y'all submitted excellent questions.

What's your favorite memory of a train? Is this a dumb question? I don't care.

Woot wooooot,

Ferroequinology (TRAINS) with Matt Anderson

Image: an operational steam locomotive in the Henry Ford Museum's Greenfield Village. Trains. Locomotives. Choochoos. Bullet trains. Hyperloops. Subways. How fast can they go? How did they change American history? Why do people love them? What should we do with all that abandoned track?&

Ahhhh yayyyy! My husband's been into the podcast so far, but he's SUCH a train fan. I showed him this post and he looked like a little kid, he was so excited :D Can't wait to listen with him.

I grew up boating and our yaught club was in a valley with a train track at the peak of the valley... with a train running through every couple hours. It was such a fun and wonderful place for me to be that it grew to find the sound a train passing through to be comforting. When my parents moved in my teenage years to a developement with a House only a couple hundred feet from a railroad track, I loved it. I would sleep with my window open to hear the horns and train pass. I still live close in the same town 20 years later, still comforted by the memories.

I’m so excited for this!! My grandpa was a docent for the Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento for my entire childhood. We used to go there for field trips and I was so proud to have him lead the tours!! 😍

Ok, not related to trains but to your secret at the end-- my wife and I JUST set out to watch all the Potter movies! We did it over like 2 weeks. Worth your time.

I took a fancy dinner train on my 16th birthday with my family and I felt like I was in Murder on the Orient Express. I loved it! Ever since if I find out we're near a train museum when I travel I drag my boyfriend along with me (not that he's complaining, he likes them too)!

I'm writing this as I listen to the episode but I wanted to share this anyway: my mom lives like, fifty meters from a railroad that runs smack through her tiny village of Shreve, Ohio. I live a few states away from her now (in Baltimore *air horn B&O railroad*), and the house I lived in most recently also had a set of railroad tracks nearby and whenever the trains would go by I'd smile and think of my mom. I think my trains are more pleasant than hers though because her trains tend to disrupt conversation whereas mine are just like, "hey buddy toot toot!" PS-There is a pub several miles from where my mom lives called the Iron Pony! I wonder if that's why. PPS-I recently got yelled at by a stranger for sitting on a set of railroad tracks and when I tried to explain to him that it was funny because my nickname is Penny and that's what you do with pennies, you put them on railroad tracks, he just got even madder. Okay thanks for reading my dumb nothings!

Pardon my little harrumph here, but: yes, Willie Nelson performed City of New Orleans, but Arlo Guthrie did it first, and his version is WAY better. :)

Great episode!as always I have tons of questions I wish I had thought of before the episode :)

Lots of great info in this one. Enjoyed it a lot. The Potter movies are worth seeing if you are into fantastical stuff. First two are decent but the rest are quite good.

My grandfather always loved trains, so one year my mom & her sisters took him on a trip from St Louis to Colorado. On the way, my grandfather revealed that he'd hopped trains during the 1930s, a la Natty Gann (my favorite movie about trains). I also grew up about 3 blocks from the Amtrak tracks in my town. When I moved out of my parents’ house, I really missed the sound of the train whistling through town.

I know I'm late but I just caught up on this one. In the book Trainspotting one of the character's drunken dad hung around the train station and talked about spotting trains.

I had a dream last night that they started using cabooses again. I credit this podcast for my dream.
