I mean, are you excited? Scared? Intrigued? Because I am all of those things after chatting with the Center for Disease Control's Dr. Amy Kirby who is passionate about... sewer water and the secrets it holds.

Don't think too much; just listen. But maybe not while eating.

AND THEN TELL ME HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT IT. Also hello from the raining north, on a visit with my folks. Thank you as always for supporting the show and making it wonderful with your questions, your curiosity and your truly awful things you make me ask disease professionals. As Leslie Neilson would say: I love it.

A toast to wastewater,

Environmental Microbiology (TESTING WASTEWATER FOR DISEASES) with Amy Kirby - alie ward

Oh boy. This episode may seeeeem crappy but it is certainly not a waste of your time. We're not kidding, while the episode is of course wonderful, mostly thanks to our wonderful guests, it is also certainly about poopy wastewater and what we can all learn from it.

Wastewater plants are some of the most amazing bird watching sites ever. Truth.

Thank you for all you do, daddy-o Ward! Every episode is such a pleasure to listen to!!

Loved it. The college near my house did wastewater inspection for Covid in the dorms. I learned a lot about how they find disease in my poo. It was cool!!!!

Became a patreon after this episode. Been lurking for a few months. I realized there was a million questions I would have loved to ask Dr. Kirby, and I want to know what cool stuff is coming down the line. I'm a nurse practitioner who's an infectious disease specialist at a hospital in Anniston, AL. We are about an hour and a half west of Atlanta. Since COVID-19 started, my job revolved around the virus. First, working in CovidICU, then as an NP managing covid inpatients. I've really enjoyed getting back to the bread and butter of infectious disease work, seeing inpatients with resistant bacteria, etc. Dr. Kirby made a comment about MDROs (multi-drug resistant organisms) found in wastewater and that's what I'm really interested in. We have seen some scary bugs lately- even some resistant to carbapenems, so I'd love to hear what she's finding in the poo water. Thanks so much for a great episode.

WELCOME and also THANK YOU for everything you are doing <3

The Spider Incident

Love all the puns Maybe I'm weird, but I don't think it was nearly as gross as Alie hyped it up to be ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As a water and wastewater treatment engineer, I was interested in this more than most I guess. I do have a request that you cover water treatment, not only wastewater, but anything that can / is done to water. I’d like to hear about the different processes that are used to make water safe to drink, and also different treatment options used for wastewater, so it can be safely retuned to the environment, or even reused (for irrigation, industrial cooling, or even returned to the drinking supply). I’m sure the subject is broad enough, that it would be, either a very long episode, or maybe even a mini series of episodes. Some subjects that would be interesting to cover: Water sources, E.g. rivers, springs, wells and boreholes, ancient water (deep boreholes) and even the sea (desalination). Treatment of drinking water, this varies from little (simple filtration) to complex (recycling waste water, desalination, waste water recycling in space!) Treatment of wastewater, from simple (settling out solids) to advanced treatment plants that provide energy (via digestion of sludge and waste material) or treat the water to remove E.g pharmaceutical residue in the wastewater (chemical and biological) Industrial uses of water, from cooling towers in power stations or air conditioning, to ultra-pure water used in the food / pharmaceuticals industry. You could also cover what water means to life as we know it, and what if anything else might work, as a basis for supporting life as we can only dream of.

I'll never think of that Mary Poppins song the same way again, and not in a bad way but dang!

I never thought I’d be so into poopie science, Alie Ward the king of making gross cool 🤙

In response to Mr. Pruen’s post: yes, please, to one or more hydrology episodes! As he wrote, there are multiple things to investigate and learn about.

I listened to this while extracting DNA from astronaut poo (asif im doing that?? Kinda cool kinda gross) in the lab... very fitting for the situation
