Hello from my sister's dining room table in the wilds of Northern California. Thanks for the patience the last few weeks as we pressed pause on production, served up Encore episodes and tended to some emergency family matters.

And now: a new ep!

So Acoustic Ecology is wall-to-wall info and nature sounds, as the Nature Conservancy's Dr. Eddie Game explains how field recordings can track and protect everything from flies to bats to frogs to endangered birds and more. (Hilariously, Eddie happened to have a mic issue but Jarrett tinkered and boosted his sound and it all worked out.)

If you listened, let me know how you did with those 10kHz+ sounds. Am I alone here in silence?

Do enjoy and thank you as always for making this show possible.

Hearts,

Ol' Pops

Acoustic Ecology (NATURE RECORDINGS) with Eddie Game - alie ward

Insects humming. Birds squawking. Chainsaws buzzing? What does the rainforest sound like? Or the oceans outside of port cities? Is the world getting louder? And what can recording devices detect that our ears - especially mine, Alie's - can't? Acoustic Ecologist Dr. Eddie Game of the Nature Conserva

Nooooo, that pause is what was helping me catch up! But also yeeees give me moooore!

Jennifer Lamb-Morrison

Loving the episode. I could hear the first two sounds but not the third one.

Cat Baklarz

I'm in my early 20s, can't hear the third one 🐙

Noel Dietz

I couldn't hear any of them. To much time next to giant subwoofers. 🔊

Miren Carredano

I heard them at 15k Hz and then nothing, but my eardrums kinda hurt anyway? Great episode, dad!

Average_pi

I could hear the all the sounds but I am 13 and my years are young.

Jenna Palermo

Hi Alie I hope you and your fam are alright!!!

Melissa Shilale

I didn’t hear only the last one! There’s still hope for me

Sending a lot of love to you and the family 💗

James Nance

Sending good vibes to you and your family!

Richard Pruen

Great episode, thanks for taking the time, while looking after your family. I hope things go as well as is possible for you and loved ones!

OMIGOSH!! I CAN’T HEAR IN 15KHz OR 20KHz EITHER!?!?! Wow!! ALWAYS surprised with what I learn in EVERY episode!! Thx Dad!! 🙉

Ted Vician

Fun episode. There’s a lot of work in acoustics going on in defense and law enforcement that might be of interest. Raytheon has a product called Boomerang that detects gunshots and triangulates their positions. BAE has something similar for detecting artillery launches.

Teresa Horne

I barely heard the first one, and the second two not at all. I knew I had hearing loss in a particular range. Now I guess I have an idea of where that range is. 🙃

Kent Durvin

Old tube televisions often emitted a tone at 17,500 Hz. Only teenage girls typically heard it. I heard it when I was young, but now my limit is 11K.

Filip Strömberg

Pretty proud to say I heard all of them 😎 Episode was super interesting! Although a wee sad with our planet getting quieter…

I found several free tone generator apps for my phone and tried one out to run a quick check. Looks like my old ears quit working at about 9500 Hz.

I'm an audiologist and found this episode to be fascinating! I have tinnitus in my left ear that's at about 11kHz and most sounds above 12kHz for me are gone now and I'm 47 yrs old. As we age, our hearing ages from high pitch down, but when hearing loss is higher than 8kHz it is often referred to as "hidden hearing loss" because it is not shown on the standard audiogram (125Hz to 8kHz is the typical range and a lot of testers don't bother with 125Hz). Hidden hearing loss is commonly associated with complaints of not being able to understand speech in noise, misunderstanding what others say in less than ideal communication settings, and difficulty focusing on more than one sound source. Hearing aids are finally getting to the point where they have frequency responses in the 10kHz and higher range, but are still often not as helpful as they are for more typical hearing losses. I would love to see an episode on audiology, by the way, especially if you could snag someone who specializes in cochlear implants! There are even a few audiologists who fit hearing aids on dogs! I could totally nerd out here. 👂🏿👂🏾👂🏽👂🏼👂🏻👂🤓
