Dr. Tara Stoinski knows her gorillas. And luckily she LOVES talking about gorillas. We chat chest beats, parenthood, silverbacks, how they make nests, how they're doing numbers-wise, where in the world they live, emotions, smells & absolutely their junk. Plus some audio … surprises.

Also I almost cut a few asides about jawlines and dating advice, but eh. Kept 'em in!

Recorded a FLIES episode today and can't decide if I should edit/write that or otters next. Or Critical Ecology? Help me decide?

Thanks for all the love and patience. Fancy Nancy and your Grandpod and I just saw 4 big turkeys walk by the window and maybe we'll eat a tiny ice cream cone after this.

Highest of fives,

Gorillas. These chest-beating, salad-munching, communal living, thick-furred beauties have so many surprises for you. Gorillaologist (IT'S A WORD) Dr. Tara Stoinski has been a gorilla scientist for nearly 3 decades and dishes on everything from fieldwork in cloudy mountains to dick facts, forest far

I loved this episode! I never knew there were 4 species of gorillas. Mind blown! Otters are my favorite animal so I'd vote that except my yard/garage seems full of flies so that might be more relevant to my current interests! And I'm also so glad you get to spend this time with your parents. My mom lost her mom suddenly 15 years ago and the things left unsaid still stick with her.

Alie Ward

Isn't that cool? Technically 4 subspecies and 2 species. I had to look at maps and wrap my brain around it but I was surprised that they are so equatorial along Africa! And you know what's funny is that whenever I see your questions I always wonder if one time I read your name and said you were the Toxinology guest, who was Anna Klompen! So I hope you enjoyed that jellyfish venom episode because y'all should be pals. Big hugs to your mom and fam. ❤️

FLIES as in blow fly , horse fly etc? If so then PLEASE DO FLIES

I'm usually a bit late in listening to your podcasts, but I do listen to them eventually. Just got through the encore Somnology podcasts, and wanted to let you know that you should take as much time with your parents as you need. It's so important. In any case, I'm enjoying discovering or re-listening to these encore podcasts.

Alie Ward

Thank you so so much, Roxanne. I hope the Fancy Nancy serves you well!

I vote flies! Early summer means flies start buzzing, and we may need reminding on why to love them. Also I once raised apple maggots into flies at work for research purposes, so there’s a special interest there. Lots of love to your family!

Mare

I would LOVE to hear Critical Ecology! Because of this podcast, I'm finally looking into going back to school for my Masters. So thank you ❤

Erin Campbell

My smologite and I would love otters next. Or as I call them water kittens. But flies would also be excellent. I could stand to find something lovable about them. Lots of love and healing to your family.

Daniel Belland

Loved this episode! Also, just want to say thanks for leading by example by taking the time you need to spend with your family? Not sure if that makes sense, but it's really refreshing to see someone like you prioritizng time with your family! Sending hugs and and love to you and your fam!

Alexandre Catulle

Just start with one, then the two others. 😁 I wanna hear all three 🤗 Much love to your family! Thanks for all dadW ❤️

Melanie Ang

Oh I can't choose either cause I love otters and would love to know more about flies too

Naomi Jane

I am weirdly keen for flies! Especially cause I'm reluctantly going camping soon. Lots of love to all the Wards 🧡

Filip Strömberg

Exciting, primates are so fascinating!! I vote do the Flies episode next 😎

Julia

I was really touched when you talked about your Dad at the end of this awesome episode 💚 thanks for sharing what’s going on and it just feels like you’re letting us in and see you as a whole person and that is lovely and wonderful and encouraging! Thank you!

Alie Ward

what is... an apple maggot please

Alie Ward

Uhhhhhh, gotta warn you the version that comes out full-length is not super Smologite-safe. BLAME OTTERS.

Alie Ward

Oh that makes me feel really good, and thank you. I feel lucky that I'm able to work remotely and that my engineer/editor is also legally obligated to stick it out with me (marriage, yessssss.) This has been a time of many life lessons for ol' Wardie.

Alie Ward

Alie Ward

I LOVED THE SCREAMING ACTUALLY. LOVE BACK TO YOU.

Alie Ward

I try not to burden y'all with too much of my own horseshit but I really appreciate all the support. It's meant a lot.

Melissa Berger

One of the many creepy crawlers that like apples as much as we do. They are little white maggots that eat their way through apples and make the insides look weirdly brown and tunneled, but without much frass. The entomologist I worked for ate apples with apple maggot damage willingly: “it’s just applesauce”. Then they pupate in the soil when the apples drop (replicated by corrugated cardboard in the lab, since my job was to study their emergence timing), and become a type of fruit fly.

Alie, we're not just 'listeners' we're Ologites and we're your weirdo family! I'm that weirdo cousin who brings ice and paper towels to family get togethers bc i cant cook and won't stop talking about the cool bug i just saw. You never burden us with your "horseshit". ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Megan Younce

I just listened to a scary movie podcast about the Fly... so I want to say post the FLIES ep first, but also otters are so cute. So I'm cool with either. Sorry so unhelpful! ;)

Stephanie Leské

I don't know dad ward I just want all the ology information! Sending love to all the wards! What's grampod's pic outta these 3? 🦦🪰🌱

So worried with sale of gorilla habitat to petroleum companies. Awful news. Haven’t gotten to this one yet. Hope it’s addressed.
