It's new and it's here and it's for you. Let's mend your tattered relationship with flies. Or at least understand it? Possibly the world's most charismatic fly guy, Dr. Bryan Lessard, has been a Dipterologist for over a decade and is keen to coax you to the Fly Side.

This interview was so fun and informative and goofy and gross and heartwarming. And his Australian accent is tops. Don't be afraid; just trust me and listen.

Anyone have a favorite fly? A new favorite?

Ears abuzz,

Dipterology (FLIES) with Dr. Bryan Lessard - alie ward

DO NOT YOU SKIP THIS ONE. Listen. Give flies a chance. Everyone loves a bee, but meanwhile flies are out here with all kinds of bodies and adaptations, inhabiting the least inhabitable lands, pollinating your future lunch, shimmering in rainbows, having lifelong love affairs, and burrowing in your b

The Fly… accurate and if so why am I still scared😂

The wasp episode is one of my favorites of all time (it caused me to appreciate a parasitic wasp who lived in my yard) so I'm very excited about a fly episode!

Cove

My favorite flies are the ones that leave me alone.

Josh Silberg

Favourite fly = large bee fly Cute pollinator adults + parasitoid larvae. Looks combined with cool life history.

Nicole Losurdo

I'm biased but my favorite fly will always be fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) because that's what I'm spending my PhD on 😁

Ted Vician

What about the Fly Girls? They spawned J Lo, which has to count for something.

The Laguiole Knife 'myth'... is it a fly or a bee? Technically, "la mouche" (the fly) is the end of the backspring, which sits over the rotating part of the blade. The upper section was expanded to form a thumb rest.

Judi Gerhardt

oops, I keep hitting return! (my first posting)

Judi Gerhardt

and the bee...A legend identifies the design as a bee granted by Emperor Napoleon I (the bee was adopted as a dynastic symbol by Napoleon) in recognition of the courage of local soldiers. However, the "bee" on the laguiole knives was only introduced after World War II, more than a century after the death of the emperor. I think it looks like a 'fly'... so that would be my favorite 'fly'!

I think hover flies are just the best. And on the other side of the spectrum the extremely metal robber flies sort of scare me by how effective they are when catching prey. (Would NOT like to be the size of a house fly in our garden with those around, no siree!)

At the end of this episode you mentioned bucket hats on your merch website. I went and I couldn’t find them. I listened to portion of this episode with my mom. She was baffled by the fact than anyone could like flies enough to study them for a living. She also recenty has skin cancer removed from hand and was told to wear hats and sunscreen at all times. So I want to buy her an ologies bucket het. She may never wear it, i don’t know, will depend on the fit, but I want to at least try to get her to rep this show that she’d be uncomfortable with due to language but sort of enjoyed for ten minutes on the way to my nephew’s baseball game. But I couldn’t find the bucket hats?

First time question asker here. Do they actually carry germs? I am scared or fly germs, please tell me they don't.

Nick A

Was I nearly as concerned about all the little bugs while mowing today, I'm sure some of which were of the two-winged fly variety? Not quite as concerned, no

Anna Thompson

I just listened and at the end I realized we missed the opportunity to ask if you really can catch more flies with honey then vinegar! I need a follow up!

Penelope Adkins

Can we an episode of gay people is that a thing?

Fiorelily

Just joined! I love your poscast Alie. Im not sure if this has been a show topic before, but i'd love to hear a deep dive into diatoms and other phytoplankton. I mean, how cool is it that microscopic water plants generate more oxygen than all the terrestrial plants! And they're flipping beautiful! Can we have a diatom party up in Ologies? And why do people eat fossilized phytoplankton anyways?

Brandon W Dodds

Bee flies are probably my fav fly?? But I love the iridescent ones too. I also photographed a fly like 10 years ago that looked like a honeybee and I always thought it was the coolest thing. Also confession - I used to be fascinated by mosquitoes and let them bite me so that they could feed

Fiorelily

Yeah, they're super cool and hey I like to breathe!

WorldsStrongestCatMom

Oh hey, it's that little piece of broccoli that's stuck between your teeth that no one tells you about here to tell you that i love your podcast and i'm sorry it took me so long to become a patron. Much love to Alie

A surprisingly buzzworthy episode of gross dadward puns and like an infestation of buried eggs, as attractive for Oligites like flies on... you know what.
