Hello! Spooktober is here, at last! And we made a very special episode with the world's foremost expert on the Parisian catacombs + added some on-location reflections from beneath the Paris streets. This one is packed with so much weird trivia and history and science -- from sinkholes to midnight bone carts, a cemetery crisis, musings on mortality, glass bones... it's just, it's a banger.

And in case you missed it last week, I took my first vacation in many years and joined Jarrett and his family in Paris for a few days. I learned a lot of weird France stuff, and I wanted to tell you about it in a minisode:

Also fun trivia: the "I Go France" episode was published with a typo (it was supposed to say "I Go to France") but honestly, it's better that way.

Has anyone been to the catacombs? What was your reaction? How do you feel about Field Trip episodes? I'm here and I'm chiming in.

Okay happy Pumpkin Month,

Your Dad o' the Pod

Metropolitan Tombology (PARIS CATACOMBS) with Dr. Erin-Marie Legacey - alie ward

Let's get spooky. Venture below Parisian streets and into the catacombs: hundreds of miles of subterranean tunnels housing millions of human skeletons, some fashioned into sculpture. Alie tracked down Dr. Erin-Marie Legacey - author of "Making Space for the Dead," professor of French history and one

Alie, I'm not caught up to know what is going on lately, but BEST WISHES!! Also, just went to Paris and your tip to get a reservation at the catacombs was clutch! Thank you so much for this episode, all the episodes, and being a wonderful human!

Nina Giacobbe

Dropping by to say I lurveee the field trip episodes! I love the way you weave all your facts together, it flows so nicely and it's a lovely little Alie hug for my ears.

Dantooine

I HAVE THOSE DREAMS TOO! I have a reoccurring dream that I find a random red door in the basement of my childhood home! I haven't ever opened it though. I always wake up with an unsettling feeling.

Alie Ward

Oh thank you so so much. I really love making them because I'm constantly researching trivial shit when I go anywhere and am feeling like "PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW THIS."

Dantooine

Also, visited Paris for the first time in May. Def my new favorite place ever. Visited the catacombs while I was there. I'm upset I never looked up to see the path mark on the ceiling. Def eye opening. Thank you for asking my question btw.

Alie Ward

WHYYYYYYYYY DO THEY HAPPEN?? What's behind the red door???? I'm actually interviewing one of the top neuroscientists in dreaming in a few weeks. Best believe I will ask him for us.

Nina Giacobbe

I am a big fan of the Wikipedia rabbit hole (currently in one about the spear of destiny, look it up, it's bonkers) and I love love love knowing fun little facts about places I travel to. Thank you for making this episodes! I know you're a busy lady!!

Doug Cooper

Thumbs up for more field trip episodes.

Kate Bell

I live in Paris and am feeling all warm and fuzzy about you having visited our creepy sculpted bone tunnels. Kids who grow up in Paris often have a friend with an illegal access to some underground space (not always a full-on bone tunnel) and they go down and have very memorable parties. Same for the roofs of Paris (someone knows someone with access and the kids get up there for parties with fewer bones). Cities this old have a ton of secrets!

Alie Ward

Aaaah! If you go check out the guest book she mentions, let us know!

Alie Ward

I wouldn't have known to even look! And great question!

fleeby

Yes, please do! I have had this kind of dream since I was a kid. It always involves finding a hidden door to a previously unknown part of a familiar building. For me they are always good dreams, not ominous or foreboding. It's more along the lines of "dude! I didn't know we had an indoor pool! This is great!"

Neal Sorensen

My response to the unnamed Parisian museum employee's 'how trendy' comment, "Yes, it is. So, steal any priceless cultural artifacts lately?" Loved this episode! Archeological spelunking is an entire jam.

Helena

Hey, cool, you're only a few hours' train ride away from where I live, as opposed to the usual ocean! If you need an excuse to come to Basel (Switzerland), we have one of the coolest museums here: Papiermühle, where you can learn everything about paper, parchment, the history of printing etc. https://www.baslerpapiermuehle.ch/?lang=en – I'm sure you'd get one hell of an episode if you talked to the people there!

Katie Pinette

The glass artist inside of me is exploding! Between the glass bones (I haven't actually gotten to this part of the episode yet, but there are glass artists who still put cremated remains in glass objects today!) and the mention of tiny glass spheres in road paint (my friend has a bucket of these and they might still use them in some places), there has to be a glass materiology episode soon. I will connect you with the right people. Also, did you know there was a glass coffin trend?!? For various reasons, it thankfully never fully took off.

Doug Cooper

Go where ever you would like. It's your reporting that's at least half of the fun.

Lisa Butler

I went to the catacombs years ago and just did like a standard walk through tour. It's pretty amazing that some people were like, "hey let's liven up the place a bit.... With all these human remains lying around". And everyone was like, sure why the f not?!

Alie Ward

I would have loved that! We got back last week, harrumph

Alie Ward

Oh thank you! I had the weirdest writer's block with it -- so it came out Friday. I got down too many rabbit holes researching the Revolution and just could NOT decide what to include

Alie Ward

I have never heard of a glass coffin! But I'm sure there must be an -ology for glass. Question: how much Dale Chihuly trivia should be included? A lot or zero?

Jeanette-o-saur

Listening to the field trip episode right meow! Fist bump for packing your own utensils. I always try to pack some camping utensils AND I have a wee case with travel chopsticks in my purse at all times. Travel chopsticks and a spork, yo. Security will never fuss about them and you can eat all of the things whenever you want with zero ecological guilt. The. Best.

Katie Pinette

I believe vitreology should be the ology for glass, but opthalmologists stole it for the study of the vitreous part of the eye. Dale Chihuly definitely has his place in glass history- he started several glass programs including the glass department at RISD (which I graduated from) and an entire glass school called pilchuck in WA state. And for better and for worse, he's probably the only contemporary glass artist most people know.

Linda Bleck

Can’t wait! I took the extensive tour in 2019 with my daughter. Quite possibly the most fascinating tour I’ve been on.

Jody Piper

Such a fun episode, Ali!! I LOVE YOUR PODCAST...I commute 30 miles and listen to your shows all the time. I am a high school counselor and also teach Human Anatomy & Physiology, so I'm always sharing stuff with my class and have your podcast linked in my Google Classroom. We are studying the Skeletal System right now and I was so excited to tell them about the Paris catacombs...can't wait for more! I think you would be such a cool friend to have, so please add me to your podcast fan club! Science rocks and you're the coolest! Happy Spooktober! Btw...can't wait for the Vampirology episode!

Jody Piper

One more thing...I live close to Lubbock TX and Texas Tech University, so it was cool to hear from Dr. Legacey!!

Quincey Robisheaux

Hey Alie, just in case you're curious about the history of charnel houses, I've read this really awesome book called The Empire of Death by Paul Koudounaris. I really recommend it!

Specs Owl

I have wanted to go to the Paris Catacombs since I heard of them first! So I enjoyed this episode. As for your secret at the end, I sometimes get dreams like that too, but they are sometimes stressful. Like when I was living in a studio flat earlier this year, I had a dream once that I found another room to it, and it was full of reptiles in vivaria that had just been abandoned, and many of them were starving. So I was very stressfully trying to look up what kind they all were, and how I can get them all food.

Specs Owl

Is there a way we can get in touch with Erin-Marie Legacey? I was just disappointed my questions about the green ooze and the skull and crossbones symbol didnt get included

Specs Owl

There used to be a service called watchmerot, where you could have a camera fitted in your loved ones' coffin to watch them decompose. It didn't take off, but I don't know if it still exists

Specs Owl

Do you think one day for Spooktober there could be a slime mould episode? They're pretty creepy, with the way they grow so fast up walls and stuff; but also really cool, the way they can solve puzzles, communicate, and have memory, even though they're only one cell with no brain!

Dorit

This is excellent timing! I'm going to Paris for science reasons next month (the human cell atlas meeting... if you don't know about maybe it look it up... could be an ologies episode iin there) and this will be super useful and inspiring!

Alie Ward

YES!! I have the same! You can eat nearly anything with those items.

Alie Ward

Aaaah, if she ever does local events you should go and say hi!

Alie Ward

Oh thank you!! I had never even heard those words before this episode. Also I love your name -- I always love saying it.

Alie Ward

Oh nooooo! Any idea why you had lizards on the brain? Have you seen the TikTokker who has an eel tank under his house?

Alie Ward

I have an AMAZING slime mold expert! So yes! And why must it be Spooktober! I think any day is a good day for slime molds.

Alie Ward

Ooooh, yay! There is also a Frohnch minisode I put out the week before!

Quincey Robisheaux

🥹😭🥳🎊🎊🎊 genuinely so happy to know you read these comments too!! And thank you for liking my name, now to convince my in-laws!!!

Linda Bleck

I wish I could post you a pic! She and I were absolutely fascinated. The podcast was so fun to listen to as well. We took the long tour which I recommend. Keep them coming !

Specs Owl

Ah, I should have explained, I very often have lizards on the brain because I have a wonderful adorable uromastyx lizard called Pan. And I guess because of my general anxiety disorder, I often worry about her health and whether she is happy. And in dreams this often manifests as a scenario where I end up responsible for many many more reptiles and I have to worry about how to keep them all healthy! I have not seen that YouTube video but I will look it up!

Specs Owl

Ooh thank you! Aye, I understand you can't fit all the questions in!

Jody Piper

Yes!! I’m listening to the Osteology episode right now! Can’t wait to jump into Vampirilogy tomorrow!

Nathan-Andrew

Is “Frohnch” a Better Off Dead reference?

Some Random Frog

Can anyone find a good photo of bone turned glass?

Darius

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many "like"s in just the first 5 minutes! So many that I had to delete the episode & get the hell out of there. Sad that an otherwise informative episode was also unbearable to listen to. Too many 15 year old PhD guest, sigh. Sorry about the honest feedback.

Ted Vician

The Paris Catacombs are featured in the comic series Rex Mundi, including something very much like the story about the person who got lost down there and died only a short distance from the exit.

Ted Vician

There is a ton of science available on glass and crystalline materials. I use a lot of different ones in the optical systems I build (mostly infrared). The SPIE (spie.org) is an international organization for optics and photonics. UC Irvine has a pretty big optical systems department, so might be able to find an expert to talk to there. A little further afield, try U Arizona, U Central Florida (where I got my MS in Optics), or U Rochester.

Katie Pinette

I've got several experts who have a foot in both the scientific and art glass communities so it's just a matter of convincing Alie to do an episode! I've even got someone with a materials doctorate who is queer who I'm pretty sure I could easily get on board as she does a lot of lectures.
