Oh, man, I am so excited about this episode! So, I play D&D and druid is my absolute favorite class but I didn't realize there was a religious connection with druids until fairly recently. Please tell me about druids!! What do we know about their original place in Irish religion and culture? And what is modern druidism? Is it still rooted in the old practice (based on what information has survived) or is it more or less a completely new practice inspired by past druidic beliefs? Bonus but certainly an important question: are things like the druid class offensive? Should I use a different term when referring to the concept? Thank you in advance for reading my question! I can't wait to hear what the expert has to say!

~First time question asker, long time listener: Is pagan a broad category for many religious or spiritual traditions, or a specific set of rituals and beliefs?

Lisa

Ditto on this question! People often refer to it as "little g" vs. "big g".

Chelsea-Victoria Turner

What is the most common misconception about paganism. How do they feel about the spiritualities that have been cropping up like "norse pagan" or "celtic pagan". Is your interviewee pagan themselves? Like Amy up there, I am involved with the unitarian universalists but I tend so find myself going to church and seeing God in nature. Even if it is just the beauty of the sunrise. I am animistic for sure and on some level consider myself Pagan. I just felt like I couldn't find enough concrete evidence/definition / understanding of what paganism is that wasn't all muddled by tons of new wave attention. I just wanted to get to the roots of it.. So...I am SUPER excited for this episode. Like. Omg omg.

Jessica McCall

Also, what do we see in movies/books that is close to authentic Wiccan practices vs just Hollywood interpretation?

Chris Brewer

How many religions did people destroy in the name of Christianity?

Hudson Ansley

I'm not a fan of religion in general, but I do wish there was an organization that brought people together with ritual and sharing of ideas that was based on sustainable practices and environmentalism... Seems like paganism is a long way there but do you think it could be taken seriously by more people?

Luna Idunna

What advice/resources would you give to someone interested in both the academic study and spiritual practice of paganism? Any ideas on how to find the good shit while avoiding neo-pagan white supremacist bs?

Chris Brewer

What religion was practiced among the ancient Celts?

Steve Haskin

By one definition aren't Christianity and Islam pagan religions? One (one form of Christianity anyway) prays to a guy hanging on a cross and Islam prays for and to Mohammed. Seems like it might be pagan to me, eh? Is Jesus a god??? It seems that way to some anyway.

Hudson Ansley

I guess I'm still wondering "what's so funny about peace love and understanding" and why is that thought and people who love the earth so ridiculed in todays society...

Luna Idunna

What do historians know about neo-pagan stuff as it relates to older traditions, and what has been added more recently?

Cat Baklarz

Resources for learning more about non-western pagan traditions? There's a lot of highly accessible illustrated stuff about Greek and Nordic traditions but not as much on South America or Indigenous traditions. I do know however that young adult literature is getting a little bit better at this!

Matthew Boardman

Where does academia draw the line between paganism and conventional religion?

Ali Vessels

I would love to hear their take on the recent "modern witch" renaissance. It seems like being a "witch" is Instagram chic these days. Now you can buy tarot decks and smudge sticks from Urban Outfitters. What do they think caused the recent popularization and mainstreaming of this, and is there anything damaging or insensitive about it?

Christa Avampato

Pagan has such a negative connotation, especially when we consider how many Pagan rituals were adopted by Christians that we continue to celebrate today. Why do you think this negative perception persists?

Jessica Ward

Lori G

I live in a city that is considering celebrating Hallowe’en on the weekend instead of the 31st. What are your thoughts on that?

M. Cerys Jenks

Of the practicing/identifying pagans you've spoken with, what proportion practice a modern (19th century or newer) whole-cloth tradition like Wicca, etc., and what proportion practice older (if updated) religions?

Patrick Foye

Is it true that the christian Romans used Pagan days of celebration and/or ritual to make Christian holidays so that the Pagans would be more willing to convert (like Christmas replacing Saturnalia and the winter solstice celebration). ?? Inquiring minds want to know. This one.

Madison Smith

Ahhhh I’m so excited for this episode!!! Is it true that a lot of Christian holidays are pagan holidays with a mask on? What is the overlap between science and paganism? Where can I go to learn more???

Earl of Greymalkin

1) Debunk ALL THE FLIM-FLAM! What are the most egregious assumptions people make? 2) Does pagan function as a catch-all term for various less mainstream religious tracks, or is it more of a specific thing with specific denominations? Is "pagan" specific to European traditions? 3) Wikipedia tells me "pagan" originated as a derogatory term for non-Christians way back when. How true is this? 4) How does modern paganism relate to historical pagan cultural practices? What survived and what survived but was changed over time and what was lost be recovered by deliberate research? 5) Is Burning Man secretly a giant pagan party that everyone is invited to? 6) How formal is paganism versus a fully organized religion or folk traditions? 7) How do we know what we know about ye olde pagan traditions? How much of the historical record is hearsay from people being judgy centuries ago versus records and artifacts left behind by the people themselves? 8) Are there major patterns or trends differentiating how people are doing modern paganism in different countries? 9) If you had to distill paganism into a handful of core tenants, what would they be? 10) How do people come to paganism in the modern day and what drives them/what are they rejecting about other religious traditions? How does this reflect modern cultural changes or technological advances? 11) How do pagans do holidays?

I want to know the customs and traditions and what the holiday was for! Sorry, I think traditions are really fascinating!

Gabrielle

why are there so many stereotypes about paganism in a negative connotation?? also would you say that pagans have a deep connection with all living things nature included?

Gabrielle

okay real quick another question: are there different cultures that portray paganism or did it start with one culture then grow from there? like what exactly are pagan gods? would that be any polytheistic culture or are there specific cultures that have true pagan gods? ahhhh so many questions!

Danae DeJournett

Yeah, so what someone else said, where did paganism come from, what cultures did it come from? Is paganism just a European thing or is it something that has roots in other places like Asia or Africa? Is it anything that’s not some branch of Christianity or other more accepted and widespread forms of religion (e.g. Hinduism)? Is paganism a broad term for different religious/spiritual practices or is it a single practice?

Rachel Mello

I know a lot of people in the US who identify as Pagan, and I think the rites and practices they follow mostly derive from a European lineage. Is that part of the definition of Paganism? Is it specifically of European / (Celtic? Goth? Pict?) origin? Or does the term more broadly cover a type of practice or belief system, as found in different global regions?

Michaeleah Stephens

in what ways do you believe the world would be different if paganism was the belief system majority of the world population was drawn to?

Paganism questions: 1) constructed paganism that is now old enough to be "old" e.g. Wicca or the Czech and some Slavic mythology that scholars have said were written/created by a single person centuries later than the creator/crafter porported the source material to be. What are those about? How do we feel about them? 2) neo-paganism - balancing indigenous folks (or children of diaspora / settler colonialism, who are trying to find their heritage rather than defaulting to dominant culture beliefs or appropriating nearby beliefs) reclaiming beliefs and allowing non-lineage folks in by invitation versus appropriation by self-actualization or even fascistic / supremacist groups; is there a pathway for indigenous folks/children of diaspora/colonialism to eject the self-serving or supremacist appropriation and lay claim or to over-ride / out-shout the use of the supremacist groups. I'm thinking of northern european paganism / Norse beliefs as one example. This is also made difficult because both groups are reconstructing through historical scholarly work, family inquiry with a lot of filling in blanks, and etc.

I’m sure there may be more to this question but one that I know of is that Saint Patrick’s “snakes” weren’t really snakes….

Caroline

As a modern pagan myself, I find the recent trends towards "witchiness" in consumerism and popular culture at times appealing and at times off-putting. I've been practicing paganism for over a decade and it's been interesting to watch it become more palatable to the general public. I'm curious to hear what other pagans experience in terms of the recent interest in witchcraft and how they differentiate themselves as pagans.

How do you feel about lumping together so many different ideologies under one pagan umbrella?

My family is of Lithuanian descent and even tho Lithuania was the last holdout of paganism in Europe, the practice was lost (past a few verbal anecdotes). FIRST TIME QUESTION ASKER: I am Wicca and live in Australia. There are many parallels of Paganism to the cultural practices of our First Nations People, and this is why I feel a very strong connection to their relationship with Country. Could Pagans in Australia - whether they are First Nations people or not - redefine not just the word but the practice of Paganism?

BeckytheSassySeagrassScientist

I'm part of a group that follows the wheel of the year - we all come from various backgrounds - atheist, agnostic, native/first people, former Christian, culturally Jewish, etc. So we try to be very thoughtful about not appropriating practices that don't belong to us while also inviting nature-based ritual and practice into our lives as we take time to notice and celebrate the cycles and seasons around us and in us. That being said, we've stumbled along at times and learned later that some things are not appropriate for our group or should be treated as closed practices. What do you recommend for people who were not raised pagan, but feel drawn to pagan practices, rituals and traditions. How do we engage and participate ethically?

Lyssa Mercier

Can pagan traditions and religious practices be traced to certain origins via languages or otherwise? I'm from the Baltics (Eastern Europe) and my native language is linked to Sanskrit, and I know there's a few local deities that have their names stem from words in Sanskrit. Hello! (First question asker! - hope to make it, this time) I was wondering how can old pagan rituals break free from Christianity, which absorbed some of these traditions to vastly convert the masses. Not that it matters when their prophet was born, but it feels more spiritual to me, to celebrate union on the longest night of the year, the 21st. I wished solestices and equinoxes were celebrated at their essence, acknowledging nature and community, as they once seemed to be.

DanaMS

How was Paganism not able to stand up to Christianity when so many more cultures were pagan?

Death Nell (Nellaenora)

Oh no I probably missed the window, but hi new question-asker! What are your personal thoughts/beliefs on magic (earth magic or any kind you prefer) and spirituality in your particular flavor of paganism, if any? What role does this play in how you think about physics and other known and unknown aspects of our universe? Most importantly, when you geek out about science, how does that interact with, or influence, or is influenced by your experience of paganism in your life? Also, happy Samhain! ...Asking as someone who was raised and very much remains "an atheist who is culturally pagan". No magic or spirituality for me, but marking cycles, seasons, and history?! I am here for it, deep in my folk dancer bones! Even when it means getting up at 4am every May Day/Beltane to dance up the sun with bells and ribbons on to "usher in the summer" when there's often still snow on the ground here in Minnesota xD

Death Nell (Nellaenora)

Olivia you ask excellent questions I LOVE these! I am someone who was raised in a very pagan-flavored folk dance/singing community as well as at Renaissance festivals. (Venn diagram, those.) In both of those overlapping communities, I and so many other queer and/or femme folks and allies before, around, and after me have been trying really hard to acknowledge and break down the many problematic patriarchal, cissexist, racist, nationalist, supremacist, ageist, ableist (etc) aspects of the cultures and traditions we love. We try to keep the things that are truly meaningful that create joy and feelings of unity for *everybody*, and make alterations to or abandon the parts that exclude and create harm. That is a slow and often arduous, nonlinear process. We encounter so much pushback, including of course within ourselves. So I am totally going to keep your questions in mind as I go forward!

Death Nell (Nellaenora)

That's... *probably* a myth, from what I understand? The "snakes" of "Saint Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland" actually being Druids, that is. I mean, there also were never actual snakes in Ireland, either, according to the current fossil record. Myths on top of myths, most like. Christianity was already in Ireland at that time, and became dominant slowly, not all at once. The Druids weren't "driven out" or mass murdered all in a short time. (Though of course there was plenty of murder, it's just that as far as I know there isn't much evidence that Saint Pat did a whole lot of that personally, but I may be very wrong in that.) Instead, Christianity mostly just absorbed Druidic traditions and beliefs to assimilate the peoples who had followed the Druids.

Nico Peruzzi

Could you talk about the differentiation between paganism and satanism? I feel like the two are very often conflated especially by Christianity

Definitely please ask about Christians “stole” Pagan ‘holidays’. Specifically Yule, but Easter as well.

Audrey Kentner

Which regions beliefs actually fall under 'paganism'? because a lot of time you see it as nature dieties, or an amalgam of Celtic, Norse, and other (mostly european), mythology.

Elizabeth Bos-Mar

When did Paganism become a religion, I have heard that it is relatively recent, like the 1800's or early 1900's. It seems based on old traditions from the Norse & Keltic religions.

Elizabeth Bos-Mar

Many people have brought different aspects of different earth based religions into there Pagan practice, reading cards and reading "tea leaves" etc. What is truly Pagan ? When is cultural appropriation a problem? How does one find a Pagan community? it is so hard to tell if someone is Pagan as the spirituality can be infused into all aspects of there life.

Brita Goldstein

First time question asker, long time listener; do we have practicing pagan communities in the US? Or is it a lost lifestyle/religion?

what exactly is the definition of paganism and where did it come about & why ? I'd love to know more about the history of religions and how traditions became what they are today. Did paganism impact our languages,.. or any other cultural or everyday life things that we don't realize are attributed to paganism?

Christina Johnson

Also who were the original pagans? What nationality?? What was their 'start of life" story? Family structure, daily life for this early religion

Erin Torres

Sorry, this will likely be too long and possibly too late but here goes...It was not until I was into my 4th decade that I realized through the help of a friend that I am a witch and I likely always have been. I just didn't have the vocabulary and/or self awareness that that's what I was practicing most of my life. It was such a profound moment when her language completely changed how I viewed myself, it was just so empowering. My mom turned to witchcraft/paganism in a more formal manifestation before I did and slightly before she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She was a retired physician and very science-minded. She discovered a talent for Reiki and found a very helpful, knowledgeable teacher. Reiki became her passion in the last 4 years of her life (yes, she successfully fought that horrible disease for 4 years but finally succumbed to it a little over a year ago). We credit her surpassing all expectations of survivorship with finding this tool and opening herself up to that kind of energy and purpose, as well as the amazing medical and surgical team who helped and guided her through that difficult journey. It was a beautiful marrying of what is typically thought of as opposites: science and magick. Given these experiences I identify as both a green witch and a science witch, but I am not atheistic as many science witches are. I feel an incredibly strong attraction to the Goddess of the Crossroads, Hecate. So I guess my question is...with so much variation in what attracts a wide variety of people to this line of thinking/belief, are there commonalities in what draws people to identify as pagan? Are there sources that point to any evidence behind the commonly (although not universally) held belief among people who identify as pagans/witches that there are no such things as coincidences? I know in my heart of hearts that there is so much more to the people that have entered my life at certain points, or places I've visited at specific times, or events that taught a profound lesson just when I really needed it than just mere coincidence. I'm also really intrigued by the concept of atheistic paganism. Can you speak to how this might differ from lines of thought that do incorporate concepts of deity worship? Thank you for bearing through this, I know this goes is all sorts of directions in an already infinitely varied world view/belief system. I am very much looking forward to this episode!

Naar

OH MY HOD I MISSED THE QUESTION TIME BUT OH MY GOD OH MY GOD
