This week's new episode: WEATHER & CLIMATE, with national treasure and global weather hero Dr. Marshall Shepherd.

Grab a jacket because everything from hurricane names to bomb cyclones to how to read a forecast awaits you. Any aha moments for you? I myself had a few, as you will hear. Oh and let me know what your favorite weather movie is.

Meteorology (WEATHER & CLIMATE) with Dr. Marshall Shepherd - alie ward

Bomb cyclones! Polar vortices! Atmospheric rivers! And rained out barbecues. One of the world's leading Meteorologists, Dr. Marshall Shepherd - a former NASA scientist and current Professor of Geography and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Georgia - is here to field a downpour of questions.

Yess!!! So much to talk about on this one. Fitting fo our snowstorm on Friday 😂

Lauren Cooper

My favorite weather movie is Day After Tomorrow. It's so bad but so fun. I LOVED this episode

Savannah Frost

I love the Day After Tomorrow too! I low key always wanted that to happen in real life when I was a kid... not sure what that means about me. But! This episode was great! I loved it a lot more than I honestly thought I would, based on a crappy meteorology course I took in college. Dr. Shepherd is awesome!

One of my favorite topics!!!! Thank you. So many questions… I live in San Francisco where Karl the Fog is a big part of our lives. But fog is so mysterious! How does it move? How many types of fog are there? How do you track and predict fog when microclimates impact fog so much?

Terena

And speaking of climate can you please explain the difference between climate and weather in a way that I can use when talking to my family over Christmas?

Doug Koekkoek

With tornados, every second counts in saving lives. What do you think is the next big thing in detection and warning that will extend our time from detection to touch down?

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs!!

Katie Hultman

The Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs movies are definitely our favorite. And I had NO idea where the % chance of precipitation info came from! That was completely mind blowing. We're having super goofy weather in Colorado right now and I understand so much more of what the forecast is saying after listening to this episode!

Pinot Noir

This will become a classic episode. He was so knowledgeable about this subject, it was absolutely amazing hearing him talk about it. Thanks Alie for making this happen.

Sean Luchs

Overjoyed that my -ology has finally joined the Ologies family. But, uh...also pretty sad that this basically guarantees I will not get to chat with Pops Ward Von Podcast. Unless...Alie wants to double down on meteorology and move from academics to operations and talk Incident Meteorology - forecasting weather for when everything is going bad.

I work at a children's museum doing Science Shows, we're currently doing our freezing cold science show. And we discuss wind! And listening to you talk about wind and some of the Bernoulli principle was awesome! :D

Adam Weaver

I'll go ahead and say without shame that when the question post for this episode popped up I definitely started writing questions for someone who studies meteors. It was early in the morning for me haha.

Anthony Forte

I like, and would love more ways to interact with ignorant yet vocal climate change deniers

Gracie Zrain

I am a weather guru and certified chaser and I was so excited for this! I live a few minutes from the NWS in Norman and love reading meso discussions in severe weather season ❤️❤️This is a great interview/discussion!

Darius

It's not the probability that they get wrong. Also, even 1% chance of anything is still valid. No, it's when they say "full sun" and it's raining or blizzard outside. Come on now. How would you like it if a mechanic electrician or a surgeon was that far off. Anyone can have an off day but too many such days and we should eliminate the weather-person's positions. Let us not forget that as he said, there are much better tools now than previous years/decades. Farmer's Almanac can have just as good a prediction(if not better), for fraction of the cost.

Sonny Pellersels

I worked on a farm where they raised Geese for eggs. The owner, a grown ass man turned his backed to leave, when one goose grabbed his right butt cheek and started thrashing him with his head and neck , as well as biting and some wing smack down. He did fall and it turned into a full blown 45 minute wrestling match, where D, the farm owner finally broke away and got out of the yard. D, carried a large staff in after that, and never turned his back. 🤣🤣🤣 Best thing ever..RIP D.

So I don’t have a favorite weather movie but I’d like to know what they think of the Sharknado series. Okay, now that I think of it I’m going with “The Perfect Storm”.

Pavka34

With climate change what are the chances we’ll see a hypercane?

Pavka34

What are the conditions that lead to derecho’s?

Alice Rubin

Why does it snow when it's 35 degrees outside? Hello water! It's above freezing!

Joe Lewis

This is brilliant! Would it make sense to follow up with someone that can go deeper into climate change science? A Katherine Hayhoe kind of person that concentrates on longer term trends? Maybe someone that studies paleo-climatology and can tell us more about why right now seems different from prior climate events (or where in Earth's past there might have been similar situations?

kris jagoopy

Holy poop. Listened to this episode the other day and now BAM "bomb cyclone" all over the news with the upcoming blizzard that might steal Christmas … trying not to go overboard with all my newfound knowledge in the ever increasing weather conversations at work, lol.

Leila Laco

Yes, a whole episode of climatology would be great!

Jules Kingsland

How can the weather change in like a minute
