It's that weird week between the holidays and the New Year and so I made you a little chill rambling hangout full of secrets, tips that have gotten me through the year, and questions from the Ologies Pal tier. If I didn't answer your question, then it'll be included in a video later this week!

But please enjoy this mellow hang; I hope some of it helps. Anyone have any tips to add? Any New Year's goals? And should I make necklaces for the merch site? I'm not much of a beader, but the 5-5-5-3-3-3 might be helpful for some (listen to the ep to find out what the hell I'm talking about.)

Okay, please discuss. And Happy Almost 2023, kiddos.

Cosmic high fives,

Your Buddydad Ward

Bonus episode: Secrets, Advice + Ask-Me-Anything - alie ward

It's a weird rambling bonus episode for the lonely week between the holidays and New Years!

Hearing you haven't been in West Virginia instantly got me this idea: You HAVE TO go and do a crossover episode with Sydnee & Justin McElroy of Sawbones podcast!! Sydnee knows sooooo much about medical science (if you don't know them - Sydnee is MD) and I believe yours and Justin's sense of humor would work great and make for a very entertaining episode ❤️

Happy new year!!! love you!! yes 100% to the necklaces!!!

Stephanie Broertjes

My big goal is to finish my MS data analytics in May! Other than that- travel a ton and mark off some new states

Lizzy Martinez

Cosmic high five, DadWard! Sending lots of love.

I've literally just been reading about a woman saving freezing bats in Houston and was thinking about how good Ologies has been for my general knowledge - many, many thanks for many hours of enjoyment! HNY from balmy New Zealand!

Doug Koekkoek

Thank you, thank you, thank you for donating to the Trevor project. That is so close to my heart. You have no idea how much it means that you donated to them.

Felix Lasselle

My goal for 2023, like every year is to keep learning new random stuff. Ologies always makes that so easy. Thanks for asking smart people our stupid questions! Happy New Year DadWard!

Doug Koekkoek

New Year goal is to finish the rewrite of my debut novel. Fingers crossed for me.

Hope

Im home alone for New Years bc work so thank you for keeping me company!

Haven't listened yet but excited as always! What about Ologies bracelets? I'm sure an ologite could design something 😁 And just a reminder to all celebrating NYE❤️ Please don't drink and drive! Call an Uber or lyft. Do it for P-22 Love you DadWard!

For real, this is my second favorite episode of the year behind Thanatology. I’m going through a collaborative divorce (my wife has realized she’s gay, not bi). I have so much respect and love for her bravery in advocating her needs and not letting us slip into resentment. But boy howdy has it sucked some days. I really felt like you were sitting on the couch with me giving me self care advice. Thanks, DadWard.

Darius

Alie, as someone who probably thinks of herself as a fair individual, have you ever looked into any pharmaceutical products dependencies, chemical make-up, short & long term side effects?

Ted Vician

Love the shout-out to Merlin Tuttle!

Joy Johnson

Secrets! I always wondered With Envy about your hair. I listened to Secrets episode in the wee hours of the 30th, immediately opened my toolbox to insert your valuable tips and tricks! Loved the "Rosary" concept and no I'm not Catholic either! Last but not least, I already practice a form of your blinking Lantern by using my light therapy lamp! It has different light values, from Blue or dim to Bright White, and a timer that holds me to task. So if I allow myself 15 or 30 minutes to indulge my addiction to word games, the timer will tell me when it's time to get back on task! Happy New Year Alie and all with Love

Heidi Wright

Happy New years! Ive done the valentines cards thing for years and I love it. It brings me so much joy and I've gotten so much feedback that it brings others joy.

A taco is not a sandwich. Nor is a hotdog a taco or a sandwich. Why do some people insist on oversimplifying the taxonomy of foods? I hope we can convince the sandwich taxonomy crew that more diversity is not a bad thing.

Noel Dietz

Thanks for the self-care advice and reminders to stop and focus. My dad died this summer, too, and I've been so focused on helping my mom through it I forgot to help myself. Happy New Year to you and all of the awesome Ologies family.

Susan G

I have seen them all grouped together as 'handhelds', I think more for ease of cookbook recipe chapter classification. But a sandwich is a specific thing, and should be celebrated as such!

Susan G

I loved this episode. It was so... cosy. Can a podcast be cosy? I'm going with cosy. I especially enjoyed and agreed with your passionate take on sandwiches. I'm not one for doing anything to mark or celebrate the new year, beyond changing my diary over, but I hope you and yours had a lovely one. Enjoy the desert. <3

Rob Harbers

That period between the two poles of Xmas and NYE is known as the Merryneum

Tamara Struminger

Where'd you go in the desert? We came down from the Bay to the Mojave, near Dove Springs!

Excited for the stuff in the hopper! And you made me do my laundry today, thank you. Happy new year!

My front loading washing machine has a little bonus function I can activate where it does all the washing but waits with the final spinning that centrifuges out most of the water until I tell it to (once I press the button spinning it takes like 15 minutes). Since I've been using that my laundry has smelled much less, also this way it has less wrinkles if I hang it up to dry the old fashioned way. Sometimes I have let it sat there for hours and it turned out fine. If you don't have that function alternatively you can open the door once it's done or if you're really motivated take the laundry out into a basket or something and come back to hang it up later (of course if your tumble dryer is in the same room that doesn't make sense, just put it in there immediately). With my machine what also helps against the stank is to wipe all the residue water out of the door seal and the detergent drawer with paper towels/tissues.

Dave

I’m sure someone on Twitter has already mentioned it, but you can get packets of washing machine cleaner in the laundry soap aisle. Chuck one in, run the washer on hot or a cleaning cycle if it’s got it, Bob’s yer uncle. If it’s been a while, might take two packets. It’s caused by buildup of soap residue in HE machines because they don’t push enough water through to completely flush the works every cycle.

Tried the Fancy Nancy method to fall asleep last night and couldn't think of a clothing item that started with X and it drove me crazy... so I went to google it, but instead noticed some notifications on reddit and accidentally got sucked in for an hour.... BIG FAIL on my part... anyway... anyone know a clothing item that starts with the letter X?

Kim Raquet

I love how you mentioned Valentine’s cards instead of holiday cards, I often do St Patrick’s day cards as a little brightness for the last few weeks of winter into spring

Alie!!! I started doing 3s and 5s, I've done it twice so far and it's already absolutely changed my life. What a gift. What a treasure. THANKYOUSOMUCH.

Spencer Parks

Whoa! Thanks for reading my question (and first!)

Cassie Chatwin

I taught my 10 year old niece who has been having issues with insomnia the fancy Nancy and it worked for her too!

Attacusatlas

Thank you so much for sharing. I hope you ALWAYS feel like you deserve rest, love, a break from work when you need it, and SLEEP (even if you haven't accomplished every goal you set out for yourself that day!). The care and hard work you put into each episode is evident in every detail of Ologies, and it's so appreciated. Patreon supporters are not your "bosses"--we support your creative vision and YOU! If that means extra encores so you can take care of yourself or just have a better work-life balance, you should go for it!!! Thank you for bringing Ologies into the world. It's truly been life-changing for me.

Alie Ward

Big big hugs -- I'm so sorry for that huge loss. It's so hard.

Alie Ward

We were in Yucca Valley, near Joshua Tree! Did you go into the park?

Alie Ward

Basket's full, it goes IN. It's helped me so much

Alie Ward

Thank you so much, my friend! And hello from my family 💖

Alie Ward

Ohhhh nooooo. I would have said "X-Ray Lead Smock"

Alie Ward

I know you're all friends and family, but I always want to do a good job for y'all! 💖💖💖

Tamara Struminger

Nope, not this time. We've spent time north of Yucca Valley, in Johnson Valley. We were quite a bit further northwest of you this time, though!

Cynthia Cohen

Every time you said this is stupid or questioned why you were sharing, I was like no! Do it! This is gold! Alie, rest assured your amazeballs kindred weirdo spirits are on the other end of the sound waves and we get it. Even more than I love hearing the tips and hacks and rituals, I really love hearing the origins and what they mean to you, and how they help you navigate life. Re: your pearl ring, a friend once called my version “power jewelry” and I’m gonna wear some of that today. Rock on Dadward!

Cynthia Cohen

Changed my mind, today it be power socks. They say “this ain’t my first rodeo” and they’re gonna get me through 👊🙂

Darius

It's possible that like me, most folks here come to hear Alie's voice, sense of humour & silliness. So we were all able to get a dose of that in this episode :)

Darius

I spent six of my nine years of postsecondary at two medical schools. Not wanting to be a poor student for so many years, I started investing in mutual funds through Berkshire Hathaway. Ten years later I took control of my investments and started trading stocks. So it was a combination those that gave me insight into that the pharmaceuticals. They are a business like any and they are not here to heal anyone, as you are led to believe. Short answer, no products in particular, simply every product. I have no horse in this race. I could tell you more or you could conduct your own diligent search.

Dave

Hello back! I hope everyone is doing as well as possible. I gotta say, as a life long weather nerd, storm chaser, and hang glider pilot, that Meteorology episode was fantastic. Keep up the great work!

Listener and fan of 3.5 years here; I live in Albuquerque, and you should totally visit New Mexico! We have beautiful sunsets, bangin' eats, and we're positively eat up with scientific types. Please come to the Land of Enchantment!
