Chronobiology is an encore episode to let us get ahead on some recent (big!) interviews we've done -- and it's perfect timing for the Spring Ahead business North America had on Sunday, setting our clocks ahead an hour. Dr. Katherine Hatcher is a hoot and I loved recording this. Two things:

1. How are you doing after the time change? I myself woke up late today for a voiceover recording session. Doing GREAT folks. Great.

2. Did anyone catch the double download this morning? We had a little audio glitch in the intro and Mercedes and Jarrett had to swap it out. So if you heard a glitch, you're an early adopter!

Okay for real, how is your sleep?

Groggily,

Alie VonDadcast

Chronobiology (CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS) Encore + 2023 Updates with Dr. Katherine Hatcher - alie ward

Ahh, Daylight Savings Time: does it mess up your brain? What time should you go to bed? Are you sleeping enough? Is shift work really that bad? How dark is dark enough?

Comments

Between Dumplings

I’m going to finish listening and the go to bed!

Erin Nansel

I’m actually listening right now. Love it!

Zed Shirogane

Had a bit rough sleep with the time change combo with a headache I get from the barometric changes from all these weird atmospheric rivers that are hitting California. Hanging in there though. I wonder actually: are there any scientists who study just atmospheric rivers? What would their -ology be called? 🤔

Laura Boer

I have had sleep issues for the past 8 years… coinciding with menopause… what gives?

Garvey’s

Genuinely had no idea it was daylight savings until late afternoon yesterday. I knew something was up the whole day felt off, but my phone watch and alarm clock all automatically switched so it took me forever to catch it

Blue Poems

I hate daylight savings time with a passion. Every year, it takes me an entire week to get back to normal!

Alie Ward

Aww, that will mean so much to her!

Alie Ward

You deserve rest, Jackie! Dumplings and rest!

Between Dumplings

Exhausted from the creepiness of misogyny today. (See posts on @Eataly and @MingTsai #SMDH)

Alie Ward

We did cover them on the Meteorology episode with Dr. Marshall Shepherd! And yes as a fellow Californian, my life is SOGGY at the moment. I keep almost buying an umbrella, changing my mid, and then another storm hits. https://www.alieward.com/ologies/meteorology

Alie Ward

Gaaaah, those night sweats. Apparently cold rooms + better sleep, in case that helps!

Trinity Higgs

Technology is helpful until it's not a! 😂 was an hour early for a while until I figured out my phone did an autochange when it didn't need to! I live in AZ

Alie Ward

I was actually AWAKE at 2am after we were watching a movie with a friend and I saw -- in horror -- my phone clock change over to 3am

Alie Ward

I woke up at 6:30 this morning and it was pitch black, so I went back to sleep, for too long. OOPS.

Alie Ward

AAAAAH! Oh no! I wonder if anyone in Hawaii had this issue!

Antonia Clark

I am groggy for a week but really prefer the light evenings, so I suck it up. If it was up to me, we'd stay in daylight savings time year round. Or get rid of the grind so that people have some evening time, whether is easier 😉

Blue Poems

I woke up at 11am yesterday and that never happens unless I’m sick. Felt weird all day 🙄

John Worster

I have trouble with the time change. My sleep is off, I've just been snacking instead of having a regular size meal. I'm more of a morning person, so I'm not a fan of it being dark later in the mornings. Someday maybe we will stick to one time, and not go back and forth, I hope.

Alie Ward

I do enjoy being able to jog past like, 4pm. Definitely a bonus.

Michael Wilbur

Thought the double audio was a none too subtle way of highlighting how sleep deprived I feel in the mornings;)

Julia Taylor

This was helpful for me because I have my first ever (!) work trip to the east coast from Vancouver BC and I’m hoping to avoid major jetlag!! But I was hoping I could hack it more than just working to adjust slowly:/ my rat brain wants fast fix

Britt Kline

My system always gets weird with time changes! I’ve definitely been slow and groggy this week. Snow storms don’t help, either, to be fair! ❄️🥱 🕰️❔❓

aa.brown.bb

I am a night owl by nature, who puts a decent amount of work into making my sleep schedule work for the societal norms of waking up in the morning and attending college classes, thank you very much, so I find it rude for this time change to go ahead and mess that up! But for real, super groggy, everything is out of wack. I can't wait for the day when Cali and Washington get in line with Oregon so the whole west coast can stop DST together!

Kristina Kunze

Learning what ‘jet lag’ actually is was cool! Light seems to impact our brain in such crazy ways. I’m currently living in a basement and this helped me figure out how to adjust my light exposure to help my depression and terrible ass sleep patterns. I’m a night owl and work very late nights, so I’m glad we got some info on that at the end this time

Alie Ward

Scientists say standard time is better for us!

Alie Ward

Aaahahaha, well then let's chalk it up to that.

Alie Ward

I go back and forth a lot for work and I use the Fancy Nancy to help me sleep, and I try to shower as soon as I get to the hotel to get sleepy. I also lay out my clothes so I have less to do in the morning!

David Dedrickson

I never seem to have an challenge with the time change. I’ve never had any problems going from Portland Oregon to Yellowstone for vacation. That’s an hour ahead. Perhaps mental preparation and meditation is what’s working for me.

Alie Ward

It's definitely cozy blankie week

Alie Ward

Sometimes I feel like I get more done at night just because I know the world is asleep. I just wish I could wake up at 5am and shift to having that creepy quiet time before people wake up...

Alie Ward

oh good! Have you ever tried light therapy?

Racheal Davis

I’m a person which chronic Insomnia yay! (Even the fancy Nancy won’t work on me, I have tried many times) This was a lovely episode to hear and I’ll try some of the tips! I feel like just being informed is enough to get started in being aware with my sleep and body

Julia Taylor

I love the shower suggestion!! Plus to get the plane juices off of me (am I traveling wrong if I get juices on me through the process?…)

Kristina Kunze

I have not but after this episode I definitely want to! I’m already a “all lamps, no bad ceiling lights allowed” person so I think my brain will be receptive. Absolutely worth a try ☺️

Nik Smith

I'm a nurse who was team "night shift til I die" for yeaaaars. I made the switch to day shift ~6 months ago. I can honestly say I didn't realize how absolutely fucking awful I felt everyday until I wasn't working overnights anymore! I just thought entering my mid thirties meant I was entering my foul, cranky swamp beast era.... nope, just tired 😵‍💫

The Wizard Seraphim

This time change hit me like a tone of bricks to the face 😵 I work Sunday’s at 5:30, every week, and I’m pretty used to getting up early, but this week I haven’t been too keen on sleeping due to some extra brain activity, and I kinda forgot about the time change, and BOY did I feel DEAD all day, and pretty much for the rest of the week…not a fan of daylight savings!!

Beau Jarvis

Alie, you are the bright spot in my week. Much love!😌

Neal Sorensen

So I noticed an error in the language used in the episode. Not a huge one... "Daylight-savings" is incorrect. People add an "S" to Daylight-saving Time all the... Time! (Pee Wee laugh) This episode has me feeling reassured about my sleep hygiene, and maybe more normal able using my phone within an hour.

aa.brown.bb

Nighttime is peaceful and there's no expectations to do anything or be anything. It's free. If you ever do manage to switch to the creepy quiet 5am time, I'll interview you for a podcast that I'll make up on the spot, because many people (and by that, I mean me) would love to know how!

Beau Jarvis

Also, I’m on school break for two weeks right now so the time change has let my sleep schedule spiral wildly out of control.

choirqueer

The time change fucks me up every goddamn time. Actual jet lag doesn't bother me that much because my body is like "we're in a different place now, it's normal that it's light and dark at a weird time". But having that sudden jump in time when my body KNOWS I'm in the exact same place as I was and that it doesn't make SENSE for that to have happened disorients me so badly I'm basically nonfunctional for a week or so both times. My dog is also very confused and concerned, and I can't tell if ze's reacting to the time change itself or just vibing off my stupefaction.

Emily Jane

1. I’m always awful after spring forward and go back to feeling human after we “fall back”. I think we should just have regular time all the time. There is something fundamentally wrong with waking up in the dark in what is supposed to be the morning. There’s just something fundamentally wrong feeling about it for me. I think the last time I was properly rested was over 10 years ago. Basically since I entered the full time workforce I can’t seem to ever get enough sleep or feel good when waking up. It’s almost as if the American lifestyle isn’t conducive to being happy and healthy….. I might be feeling a little salty about capitalism today.

Nana From Canada

We should stick to 'cow time' Cows don't buy in to this springing forward an hour stuff. They want to be milked, when they want to be milked and that's Standard Time.

Isabel Vaz

I started listening to the first download and panicked when it disappeared 😂😂 glad it was just a glitch so it repeated a few hours later

Allie

Alie’s “hi it’s _____” at the beginning of every episode kills me every time

Jacintha Jaa

Time change needs to stop. We're none of us farmers. It's so hard to get me kids ready in the mornings after we lose an hour and it messes up my Mom's already messed up Alzheimer's brain. Hate it. Love Ali. Hate daylight savings time.

Spencer Parks

DST has definitely got me messed up these last few days. Yuck. We gotta get rid of DST!!!

Margaret Downs

I LOVE the creepy quiet time before people wake up. It's when I'm most able to do tasks I'm otherwise dreading. About 1/3 to 1/2 of a cup of coffee is JUST the right amount of caffeine for me to wake up enough to work, but not be so awake that I overthink everything.

Sam Nelson

Still wrecked after the time change /:

Margaret Downs

This time change has been ROUGH for me. Feel like I'm playing catch-up all the time and I'm definitely coming down with a cold (though that's probably correlation, not causation.) Am enjoying the lighter evenings, though. Where I live is on the veeeery eastern edge of the time zone, and I've heard people say that we should really be on the next one east. I can see benefits and drawbacks to that for sure; main drawback from my perspective as an early bird is that sunrise in the winter would be SO late, and also national sporting events and such are already kind of late for me :p Sleep in general is kinda all over the place lately anyway; I inherited my dad's tendency to sleep for like 5 hours and be wide awake at 3am, and this tendency is exacerbated by stress which I'm definitely experiencing at the moment. I'm usually able to go back to sleep, but sometimes I end up exiling myself to the couch so my restlessness doesn't keep my partner up.

Todd Peterson

I've been dragging in general over the past 2 months: I took a new assignment after specifically asking what the hours would be since I knew the client was east coast (I'm central) and I've been getting up at 6:30 because I was not given correct information (AKA lied to.) Thanks so much for this episode (which I listened to when it originally aired) which made me feel MUCH better about (and able to take the "sleep shaming" that I often get) "not being a morning person."

Todd Peterson

Don't discount lack of sleep and getting sick. Pre-covid, pretty much every time I decided "ok Todd, time to get (only) 8 hours of sleep and get up early" I would get sick every single time. Post covid I don't seem to have as many illness issues, but I'm chalking that up to getting all my shots and barely leaving the house!

Todd Peterson

Ha yeah it takes my pups a could of weeks to realize that we're not getting up to go out at "the same time" as we used to whenever there's a time change :(

Todd Peterson

I'm so confused. I just googled "Fancy Nancy" and it's a kid's show. So I tried "Fancy Nancy sleep aid" and got kid's pajamas related to the show. Is this a trick, that the show is sleep-inducing, or is there an actual sleep aid called the "Fancy Nancy"

Leila Laco

Yes! It was one of the earliest episodes - an interview with an artisan clockmaker :)

Julia Taylor

Alie talks about it in other episodes (somnology I think) but it’s a tool that her mom created and you choose a category of thing then try to identify an item for each letter in the alphabet (so for fruits, A is apple, B is blueberry etc)

Cecilie Baker

I'm OK, perhaps due to not having regular go-to-sleep and wake-up times currently. But my cat and my dog are quite irritated that I'm not feeding them when they expect.

aa.brown.bb

That actually does sound lovely! What time do you manage to get to sleep at night to be able to get up so early?

Margaret Downs

Ideal sleep time for me is like 10-5:30, possibly shifted half an hour or so either way. I've been stressed lately and needing more sleep (or at least more time in bed to get enough sleep) so I haven't been getting up as early. When everything's normal I naturally wake up by 6 or so and feel rested. My partner gets up around 7:30 on weekdays; I really just like being up before the emails start rolling in. I can totally see where being up late at night has a similar effect, and I try really hard not to be a "morning person evangelist" because I recognize that all our brains work differently!

Kevin Wilson

Omg this episode is so good!!! I totally vote for no more time changes lmao! I tend to fall asleep with lights on…a lot…. Given my job I don’t get home till late some days and yeah… it just happens haha. What I started doing though was I got smart bulbs/plugs (the plugs are way more cost efficient lol) and have them set to turn off at 1am just in case I fall asleep with them on I know they’ll be off and I won’t have extra light pollution in my room while sleeping.

Neal Greenstein

I worked overnight (and slept during the day) for 8 years. I think it’s had a lasting impact on me

Ted Vician

Here’s my proposal: instead of springing ahead/falling behind an hour, we do 10 or 15 minute increments several times. Say last Sunday in January to June, we go forward 10. Then last Sunday July to December we go back 10. Losing or gaining 10 minutes is way less disruptive than 60. It wouldn’t be any harder to program for phones, computers, etc.

Pinot Noir

I did the same thing for 12 years. My next job was during the day and it took me years to adjust to being awake during the day.

Neal Greenstein

I was able to transition easily….I was dealing with some extreme anxiety and panic. Moving to a normal schedule was a big part of fixing my problem. My was a different person immediately. It was bad. I cursed pie! My brother offered me pie at thanksgiving and I replied “f@ck pie!!!” Lmao

Ashleigh Rivers

Same. A myriad of pharmaceuticals and delta 8 (though it’s about to be illegal where I live 🙄) are the only things that seem to work. Last night and a good bit lately they don’t work for HOURS, putting me sleeping around 5 am. But I’m hoping to start really working on this issue because it’s really getting to me… Fancy Nancy sounds great, just doesn’t do the trick for me (I think I actually wake up more trying to come up with answers).

Ashleigh Rivers

I definitely get more done late at night. My natural rhythm is between 2&4 for sleep, try for 8 hours. But I live and work a schedule that is not conducive to that. So Alie, when you figure out how to do it, please share. I have tried so many times!! The closest I have come is the first two weeks back from Thailand, and then it gradually went back to *my* normal.

Ashleigh Rivers

Been waiting to find a few minutes to hop on here. 1) yes, I noticed the glitch and panicked because I had just sent the link to a client who I had JUST been having a conversation with about circadian rhythms and stereotypes around laziness for us night owls, etc. Turned out I pasted a phone number instead of the link for the episode. Not sure that’s any better… 2) one of those wildly inconsistent bedtime people, so the time change doesn’t usually affect me, just the dogs… but I have felt more lethargic in general. That could also be 6 months+ of getting 3-5 hours (a handful of 6-8 hours in there, but very broken up) of sleep a night. ALSO- I can’t remember if it was this episode and I glazed over during it, or the dream episodes, or maybe even the sleep episodes, where you mention getting sick when you actually start to get sleep again. My goal (one of them) for the next 3-4 months is to get consistency in bedtimes and S L O W L Y ween myself off meds for sleep and find better solutions for insomnia and very delayed circadian sleep phase (to exist in the world more easily- though I do enjoy the very quiet time late at night). Anyway, in some episode you say you’ll bring in an immunologist and I’m wondering if you have figured out why the heck getting more sleep suddenly makes you get sick more often for a while (because it absolutely happens) &/or if you found someone to interview about it, because I NEED TO UNDERSTAND! 😂

Rae

Haha, Zeitgeber does not mean antalope saddle, it means "time giver". But antalope saddle is maybe more fun

Abby Mitchell

Late but *dramatic fall* my sleep is terrible! And nothing to do with the current incoming stress and large project I have decided I will be putting all of my effort into

Olivier Calas

Alie you simply kick ass. Your shows are fabulously interesting and your wicked sense of humor can pretty much handle any type of ology. I’m a huge fan! Thank you for putting science front stage in such a happening way!

Alie Ward

Gaaaah, thanks for the heads up! Guilty as charged. I also cannot say Organgutan without adding a G on the end.

Alie Ward

yep! alieward.com/ologies/horology

Alie Ward

Yes, we fucked up a little but that's okay!

Alie Ward

ohaaay it's the lady replying to your comment when you least expect it

Alie Ward

Me tooooo! Do you feel guilty going to bed? That had been my issues for decades, so I would just procrastinate and fall asleep with lights on

Kevin Wilson

Yes!!! 1000% yes!! And on top of that, I work in TV, so like the hours are insane to begin with so I’m all over the place from having a normal schedule sleep wise, or being able to do the things I need to around the house at a better hour… which then fuels the guilty feeling of falling behind of cleaning/dishes/laundry etc😵‍💫 tis a struggle!!!! (Which I know I’m preaching to the choir on that lol)
