the Domicology episode is live wherever you get podcasts!

If you're fascinated by boarded-up houses, abandoned malls and mining towns, HAVE I GOT AN EPISODE FOR YOU. Did you know you can get a PhD in ghost towns? True story.

Dr. Rex LaMore is a treasure and this one is info packed and then gets even sillier and more heartfelt with your questions. Did it make you go back and listen to Detroitology? Also, am I the only one who thought of Fight Club?

Let me know what you thought! Okay, enjoy the show.

Domestically yours,

Ol' Ward

Domicology (ABANDONED BUILDINGS, RECYCLED HOUSES & GHOST TOWNS) with Dr. Rex LaMore - alie ward

What's inside that boarded up house? Should you explore an abandoned mall? A vacant factory? And how much of an old house ends up in a landfill?

Loved the episode (as always 😂)! I’d never thought of the “lifecycle” of buildings, but it makes total sense. Have a nice week Alie 🫡🔥

Loved it! So informative! My heart breaks when I see so many beautiful buildings rotting down in my town...

Ghost towns are such a mistery to me! Can’t wait to listen!!

I grew up in Michigan (with two siblings who've gone to MSU), so I could relate to a lot of what he said about abandoned houses in the Midwest. I'd love to see my home figure out how to take care of and repurpose these buildings, so I'm glad to hear that Dr. Rex is spreading awareness!

I was very inspired to look at reusing the materials from my parent’s house and also I couldn’t help but picture George Carlin because his voice sounds the same.

This episode is EXACTLY what I need to start our long Northward trek! 27 hours of ologiea and I am starting with this one! Oh, and I’ll be wearing my crevices t-shirt in case anyone asks….

In my town (Medford, Oregon), Habitat For Humanity operates a store called ReStore, where they sell materials scavenged from old buildings, donated by remodelers and builders and others. It's a great place to buy furniture and building supplies at bargain prices. Same organization President Jimmy Carter volunteered with.

Lizzy Martinez

This was a very insightful episode. I couldn't help but start daydreaming how buildings could be made with the focus on deconstruction and repurposing!

I’m about half way through the episode and I love it so much! Never thought I would enjoy listening to folks talk about abandoned buildings but Dr. Rex’s passion just draws me in 🤍

One time I had the opportunity to play the 1812 Overture in a community band while they demolished a building right behind us. (Yes, there are actual cannons written as instruments into the original score. It's an amazing piece of storytelling by music.) One of the companies involved with the building demo wanted to have a community event to highlight the history of it and the next project I think. The demo's implosions were timed with the cannons in the piece and it started coming down at the climax of the music. It was fun and wild, bucket list for sure. Here's an example of how people do the cannons in case you've never seen (CW actual cannons firing) https://youtu.be/JAjN9WkTwA8

Lolololol Dadward, why did you call me a "wus" ? Jenn Squirrelllll wus Alvarez 😂😂😂 the 2nd time you didn't. Idk why this is making me laugh so much!😂😂 loved the episode, even tho you called me a wus. 😂😂💀

Alie, I noticed in the outro that you mention “cryptozoology”. Took a look through the back catalog and didn’t see it, but would LOVE an episode on that, if you can find an expert like a folklorist. I’d really like to hear about how modern myths like Bigfoot, Mothman, and Florida’s Skunk Ape arise. Might be a spooky Halloween time episode.

Rachel Cannon

I was really hoping you were going to bring up Baltimore! It's another place where you can buy an old house for a song because they've lost hundreds of thousands of residents in the last 70 or so years. Great episode!

I haven't finished the episode so I may be getting ahead of myself but I wonder how Historical Societies impact his work. We have an abandoned sugar mill in town that is super dangerous and constantly being vandalized and set on fire. Aside from the cost of demolishing/cleaning up the area, the local historical society has been very vocal about keeping it from being destroyed.

This episode was so good! ❤️❤️

From my mom- A lot of things last longer when they are not used. Why do houses that are unused fall apart faster than those that are inhabited?

Brian [I'll add something witty when the amount of caffine in my system reaches critical mass]

I'm not a domicologist but I believe it's due to nature taking back what belongs to it. Once an abandoned house becomes open to the elements (e.g. broken window, hole in the roof, water damaged wall) it's decay rate becomes exponential. Another thought: Without climate control being used a building becomes extremely humid. The water in the air quickly permeates the porous surfaces creating mold which quickly breaks down said material and spreads. The mycology episode may have said something about it... maybe that's why I know this now... enough rambling. Hope this helped

Okay not to be a super creep but since Dad Ward did say share the address of the dump herself (Throwita Way) I was delighted to confirm my suspicion that her folks live in/near my hometown of Placerville!!! 🤩🤩🤩 Just kinda cool to think we may have at some times been ships in the night passing each other by. #TouchedByAnAngel #SmallAssWorld #Placervillains #UnnecessaryHashtags
