DOLPHINS IS HERE. Wow wow wow, this may be one of my new favorite episodes ever. Delphinologist Dr. Justin Gregg is exceptionally charming and informative and hilarious and you will love him. Instant classic.

Tune in for squeaks, squeals, clicks, cliques, language, birth, blowholes, giant brains, science gossip, NASA and dolphins and dolphins on acid.

It's just.... the best. And it only gets weirder next week.

Did you listen? Aaaah!

Okay enjoy,

This episode is so much fun!! All I want in life is for a dolphin to nudge me with a fin

Alie Ward

You're welcome! Enjoy! It's bonkers.

Olivia Welsh

I bought one of his books halfway through the episode. When you know you know. I also image searched the pink river dolphins and I think I’m not okay?

Rob Worman

(Long time patron, first time commenter...) A comment on the whimsical asides that are added in post: I always like them. and I sometimes really like them. But OMG today.... ....the Werner Herzog quote? Hee-larious!!!!!!

Alie Ward

That was supposed to be a question mark!

Olivia Welsh

No! We are very excited about dolphins here!!!!

Olivia Welsh

“If Nietzsche Were a Narwhal: What Animal Intelligence Reveals About Human Stupidity” with a title like that how can you not?!

Hyena Girl

I squealed when i got this notification….. 🐬🐬So pumped to listen!

Finlay

as someone who’s childhood nickname was fin and would often times say dolFin….this episode is absolutely thrilling to me

Aubrey Nelson

Love this! Furiously taking notes even though I never swim in deep water “do not swim at a dolphin, swim WITH them” ✍️✍️✍️

Ella Whaanga

Yessss Allie!! Yessss I’m so excited to get to work this morning jam my headphones on and listen to DOLPHINS!! I’ve been hanging out for more ocean ologies. Thanks dad

Nicole D-G

Yay!!! I work with him at the Dolphin Communication Project!! I had no idea he was going to be on this and seeing his face on the episode was UNREAL! Can't wait to listen

So who had the name "dolphin" first: the mammal or the fish with the identity crisis (a.k.a. dorado, a.k.a. mahi-mahi, a.k.a. common dolphinfish)?

Nathalie Jones

Several years ago I read a book about dolphins (I think Voices in the Wild???) which spent each chapter on a different weird belief about dolphins and my favorite is still years later that they are aliens because they are just so weird and smart.

Deacon Raid

A whole episode about olives! Wow!

aa.brown.bb

Alie back at it again with giving me thoughts of "Hmm, maybe I should go into this field for a living 🤔" I've always had a good background love of dolphins! As someone who's about to finish a bachelor's degree in psychology, I love learning about different communication styles!

Seán Thomas Kane

The whole concept of conscious breathing is fascinating to me! Looking forward to hearing more in Part 2, and looking up Dr. Gregg's work.

Ted Vician

The description of the dolphins eavesdropping on others’ echolocation sounds is pretty much what radar scientists call bistatic radar. An airplane can use its antenna in receive-only and detect the reflections off a target from another source. Same idea, very different technology.

Doxx

Have you ever heard of Dolly the Dolphin? She's why I finally coughed up the bucks and became a patron. I can't believe she didn't come up in the Dolphin episode. https://youtu.be/aEX33vAyF5Y

Mandy

Less dolphin and more guest, but it was really hard to ignore how much Dr. Justin Gregg’s voice sounds like Schmidt on New Girl.

Chelsea Evans

Great episode! I loved hearing about how they use sonar to navigate and hunt and live their dolphins. I am a cardiac sonographer and the part where he was talking about how they change up the frequency to locate stuff further away or to “see” more details gave me total flashbacks to my ultrasound physics boards! I have to used a clunky machine to do that and these swimming mammals are just out there doing it with their heads like it’s no big deal! Amazing!

Matt Ceccato

I do not see how I could anthropomorphize a dolphin. I think that Jack Black/Will Smith "Shark Tale" ruined that for me. Still, this is a great episode!

Matt Ceccato

And thank you for asking my question! I have always wondered their status in the wild...

Joey Zweig

Such a lovely start to my morning. Loved this episode. Question: you kept referencing an episode on Otters, but when I searched on Spotify I couldn’t find anything. Is that my Spotify being weird or is it not out yet? I wanna know what fucked up shit otters are doing!

Anke Lausch

I couldn't find the episode either.

beeeeen

mine also fucked up a bit in the search bar, but if you go on the podcast and search from there it shows up!

Nathalie Jones

I think the title is lutrinology? maybe try that...

Mushroom Morgan

Finally had one of my questions asked but unfortunately it was one of the ones that did some damage to Alie's search history 😅

Grandma Theresa

Episode 1 was so good but number 2 is the reason why Flipper will now be banned in Florida. I loved it so much. I laughed out loud and caused my husband to come check on me. This was def in my top 3 Ologies podcast episodes. Just use those penis fingers. Oh yes.

Doxx

It’s on Apple Podcasts if that helps? July 2022.

Doxx

ALIE! White Goddess? That’s Dolly! It’s a shame we couldn’t ask about that. 😔

Anna Thompson

Throwing this here because episode 2 doesn't have a thread and I'm driving all day and if I don't post now I'll forget... Regarding Alie's secret: you were stranded 10 minutes from my office! There's so much more to the DFW area than the Gaylord but even in Grapevine there's a ton of interesting stuff!

Emily Krieger

Ali....I am over here slow clapping for you and Dr. Gregg b/c that was a feat of oddity, very well done, very very well done, and thank you for that journey

BolognaShoes

BUT WHEN WILL THERE BE AN ORCA EPISODE? I have so many questions

Kpelliss

We live half the year in Baja, and just stick your head in the water to hear whale songs and the occasional dolphins.....I swear my fur-children hear them from the shore.....A most excellent cast, and I feel so Dunning-Kruger smart after every episode...

Great episode! I have to chime in about the tetrodotoxin part (as a budding neuroscientist in training). Basically, TTX (tetrodotoxin) as a neurotoxin blocks the sodium channels on neurons and stops neurons from doing their work (AKA initiating electric signals along their own membrane by firing action potentials, which is important for them to subsequently talk to other neurons). As you can imagine, getting a poke of TTX is bad in many ways, especially when you need your neuronal activity to instruct breathing. TTX is frequently used in laboratory settings in electrophysiology experiments to measure neuronal properties when we do not want action potentials to get in our way. In strictly controlled very small dosage administered very carefully by medical professionals, TTX can be used to block pain signals. However, it is hard to believe that dolphins would be able to enjoy an uncontrolled dosage of TTX to get them high (although I think TTX would probably not have psychedelic effect) when it is a really potent toxin that will kill the animal in small dose. So I'm glad we get to clarify that in this episode. And don't go poke puffer fish.

It is wild to me that John C Lilly had money thrown at him in the way he did when legitimate scientists fight so hard for grants now.

I don’t know if this is the place to say this — apologies if it’s not! — but there’s about 10 seconds of silence right at the end of Part 1 (during blowhole sex talk, of course!). On the Apple Podcasts app it’s from 57:40–57:50. I checked on another app (Castro) and it happens as well, and although it’s at the same part in the conversation — right after he says “when I heard this, there’s like a picture” — the timestamp is different for some reason? In any case, much appreciation to the editing team, Mark, Jarrett and Mercedes!

Adam Eakins

Live in Grapevine myself and was tickled to no end that Alie was in my town. Wonder if she made it out of the Gaylord at all. Nice hotel, but so much more to see and do. Maybe she can find an ologist around here so she'll have an excuse to come back.

Meghan McLean

Gahhhhh im listening to part two and Wet Goddess was written by my old roommates uncle! It used to come with a free shark tooth necklace.
