I looked for a long time to see if this was an Ology and I shrieked to find the word... Modern Toichographology. So, murals. It's on.

Murals are hugely important in the culture of some cities and Philly is one of those cities! Tomorrow I'm meeting up with a mural artist who's worked hard to make Philly more beautiful, and he's giving me the how and why and where of murals.

Can we talk about murals vs graffiti? I feel like murals are things that people pay to have on their buildings whereas graffiti is artwork someone didn’t ask for. I would also like to ask about the cultural significance of graffiti and murals and how this kind of art is used for political movements or bringing awareness to other parts of society that people try to ignore (Diego Rivera with communism and Basquiat I think started with graffiti but then was accepted into the art world, for example). Also I’m noticing so many more murals being commissioned. I live in Arizona and the mural culture is strong here. What’s it like in different places? Sorry this is so long. I’m excited. Thanks Alie. I've heard many times how murals have a calming effect on children. Is there any scientific research to back that up? And have they done any research on whether the same might be true for adults? Should we cover the capital in murals just in case in an attempt to stop the adults there acting like children? I don't see how it could hurt.

How do you feel when an old mural is “refreshed” by a different artist. For example there is a popular mural artist (forgot his name 😬😬😬) that did a lot of ocean themed murals in New England. One painted in New London,CT that was very beautiful was a bit worn looking so it was “touched up” by someone less skilled (to put it delicately). Is this a common practice or was this an odd case? Is it considered poor etiquette to do this? Also BIG apologies to the artist that did the touch up job! Murals are HARD and I’m sure you did what you could to the best of your skills

In my country there's been a boom of apartment buildings getting murals for many years now. I know most of them just hire an artist to design and paint the mural but then do not make a contract with them to fix and maintain the artwork. First time question asker :) I'm in Dublin, Ireland, and murals and street art have been super important in political activism here in recent years (we've had a marriage equality referendum and an abortion access one too, and the success of each was in no small part due to conversations started by murals). There's also a very rich tradition of political and protest murals in Northern Ireland from the Troubles right through to the present day. Do they have a similar function in Philly, or further afield in the US?

I love me some murals. My dad actually made a mural (with the help of the neighborhood) many years ago that's still there! He also proposed a fun mural for the side of an Irish Restaurant that got declined but it's a good thing because that building is no longer there. Our little city has really upped it's mural game in the last 5-10 years and I hope we keep going. If you've traveled to other cities, which ones have the best murals? I recommend Reykjavik!

There is a GREAT neighborhood in Miami, FL called Wynwood where almost the entire area is covered in street murals. Some are protected, and some are painted over in the middle of the night, guerrilla warfare style. The murals are incredible and are a part of the neighborhood art culture.

As a professional studio artist (oil painter) I've always admired the heck out of those who can create worlds on such a large (and usually high up) scale. I'm wondering if there's a variety of media that muralists use, paint-wise. Spray paint? Brushes? Rollers? What sorts of things are staples in a muralist's supply box? Is air brushing a standard practice? Do they put a protective coating over the mural when it is complete and dried? When they drive past murals that they have completed and they have faded or chipped a bit, do they go mental wanting to go touch it up? OK, here's a question, are murals really used to "brainwash the masses"? A quote from our former Maine governor, said after he removed the labor mural from the Dept of Labor building because he said it was innappropriate. There were tons of murals/graffiti on the West Side of the Berlin Wall and other places in Berlin. Some were still up when I visited in 2015 or 2016. Murals seem to be pretty common in Beirut, too.

1st time question asker: when I was a teen I successfully lobbied the city council in my home town (Santa Fe, NM) to fund a call for graffiti artists to create graffiti murals in in spaces where problematic graffiti was common to channel that creative spirit positively. In New Mexico, we have a history of amazing mural artists. Can you talk about the cultural social significance of using graffiti to stake a claim over territory. I know people look at this behavior as problematic but its also very interesting from an ethnological/human behavioral perspective. The worst part of it for me is how sad it is to see an awesome piece being covered over by dumb random letters. I'd rather see more graffiti everywhere than see worse artists covering over the work of better artists.
