AAAH! IT’S HERE. NATIVE MELITTOLOGY is up. A new episode just published and it’s all about the study of indigenous bees! So hairy. So bumbly. So lovable.

Author, bee expert, photographer and Nat Geo Explorer Krystle Hickman is one of those people that is just so talented and hardworking at everything she does. I was fortunate to go on a bee safari in my yard with her and then chat about her adventurous path to becoming a professional bee photographer, conservationist, and author.

You may remember that in 2018 we did a general Melittology episode that included backyard beekeeping, but this is a different perspective on native pollinators and habitats. It’s also incredibly inspiring and before you know it, you’ll be staring at bees or starting a nature journal or just asking yourself: “what do I LOVE to do?”

I hope y’all like this one as much as I loved recording it. Anyone have a favorite native bee? Let’s hear it!  If you listen, mine might become obvious. Enjoy and as always: thank you for making this show possible.

Honeybees get all the attention, but native bees are the underbugs to root for. Photographer, author, and National Geographic Explorer Krystle Hickman shows us the wonders of indigenous bees through her lens focused on conservation of bees and their habitats. She covers their lifecycles, tunnels, tu

Leaving the bees aside, what's the deal with your dog Goblin? Umm, something happen in Gremmie land that I'm not up with the play on??Spill!😄

Sonja S

How are bee populations affected by weather? I’m noticing fewer bees, and insects in general, during this summer of drought in much of the Midwest.

Krystie Sketches

Such an important topic - people don't realize how many different non-honeybees there are and how important they are to our ecosystem! Can't wait to get my ears on this one! @Sonja S, I hope they touch on this. We are def losing insects and it's hitting birds and others that depend on them for food and pollination of food.

Susanne Collins

Love love love our native bees! Such a great episode. Also of importance however is the blink and you’ll miss it I Think You Should Leave fedora reference….incredible.

Nathalie Jones

A query I was pondering while listening to this lovely episode.... Alie, please tell me you know about the hawaiian happy face spider.

Paulina Krasińska-Sroka

(I'm 40 minutes into the episode) OMG when you were talking about duforia bees and mentioned "flashcards" in the aside I thought it was just a joke, but got so excited and came here to comment that we need those flashcards to be made. AND I FOUND A LINK TO BUY THEM ❤️❤️❤️ This is the happiest thing this week.

Obsessed with and photograph our native bees! Bumbles & carpenters & sweat oh my! Where do you fall on the debate of native plants vs non-native for our pollinator friends? If they like it why can’t we provide?!?!

Alie Ward

Oh I just meant Gremlynn, who is Gremmie, who is a goblin of the canine variety!!

Alie Ward

We do discuss climate change! It's the number one threat to bee populations!

Alie Ward

I'm very pro-native! Our entire yard is all native plants -- but it had been invasive cheatgrass before that!

Rob Harbers

I did quite the double take! Hearing "My dog Goblin" , and thinking "Hey, what happened to Gremmie??"

Emilie Shely

Oh. My. Gosh. Just Google this, sooooo cute and funny, we NEED an episode.

Melissa Wise

Anyone else not getting the episode on Google podcasts??

Amanda Burns Art

I kindly request a native plant tour please!! To go in the vision board in my mind.

Kristina Spurgin

No new Ologies episodes have shown up in the podcatcher app I use for 15 days. I'm getting new episodes for other podcasts. ??

JENN 'Benthopelagic squirrel' ALVAREZ

This episode encouraged me to finally create a wildflower section in my yard filled with NATIVE wildflowers. I've ordered the seeds and I'm going to not forget I'm in the middle of a project and randomly walk away.😂

Nathalie Jones

I was thinking about it in the context of native bees because it is one of the most iconic bugs native to Hawai'i

Max G

This has happened to me a couple times over the years, and when I search for the podcast it’s oddly started a new feed for it?

Darlene Skapura

I really really enjoyed this episode and it coincided with national pollinator week! I learned so much! Have you ever done a monarch butterfly episode? Their numbers dropping are due to many reason, migration issue and native plant loss, and a disease called OE that can make the wings deformed. Keep being a great dad ward, i love learning with you!

Wanting your own stock or specific pose/architectural feature/etc is the gateway of many artists in to photography. In my case I ended up doing more stock then art.

Rineil Mandre

Will be looking to purposefully add native plants to my mostly uncut backyard

Nick A

I love how like half of this episode is Alie just squealing at how cute the bees are

Camille L

Just wanted to say I loved loved loved this episode!! Krystle is SO COOL and it was such a joy to listen to her talk about native bees 🐝 I was smiling the entire time. Thank you!

Ben C

The Flashcard order link doesn’t seem to work. It just asks for my Kickstarter email but I wasn’t an og backer. Any tips?

FreshCutGrass

Same! We want to order the Bee Cards, but since the Kickstarter is over, how do we get them?

You Can Be The Judge

When I was a kid there were sand bees all around our play ground in So.Cal. They dig these little tunnels in the dirt all the time and never bothered us as long as we didn't bother them... Can someone tell me about them?

Emily Krieger

I notice bee butt colors all the time now after listening to this ep and have a better idea of who they are, which makes them feel more like my neighbors, so thank you!!! And I'm getting those cards!
