Hello, Buddies!

This week's ep with Krystle Hickman touches a lot on our native garden (planted by my friend David Newsom of Wild Yards Project) and I thought I'd show you some photos! They are titled accordingly and feature a windblown, grumpy Gremmie. You are welcome, Gremmie says.

The amazing bee photos are done by David, and for waaaay more check out Krystle's IG, @BeeSip.

Anyone thinking of planting more native flowers or shrubs or tree? Our backyard went from all invasive "cheatgrass" to this thriving Grand Central Station of pollinators.

Also: I didn't realize that this is Pollinator Week until AFTER the episode went up. But... good timing!

Okay, go stare into a shrub and make some pals.

I'd love to plant more native plants, but inhave no idea where to begin! I don't see any local nurseries that specialize in native plants around here either. I follow a scientist on Twitter who lives further south in FL than I do, and his native garden is also ahmazing! These are so inspirational to me! Oh, you can find him @swampthingspaul

Stunning transformation!! So cool that the critters are already finding it. And since some folks are still looking for local native plants, the National Wildlife Federation has a fantastic tool! (I think it's US only, unfortunately.) https://www.nwf.org/nativeplantfinder/ Or just search for "native plants finder," and it should be one of the first results.

I jealous, I don't have half as many bees in my wildflower plot.

LOVED this episode. I started planting native plants a few years back and have fell in love with staring at the native bees. Btw, while you're in Philly pls pls pls go to the Museum of the American Revolution (if you're not already planning to go). Tell them I set aside tickets for you!

I love all if these photos! The colors! The variety! The pollen bathing! Bees!! The Caterpillars! I want to sit in the middle of it all and make new friends! Thank you so much for sharing your little paradise garden! ❤️

Chandler Witherington

I totally thought you timed this specifically for pollinator week. Well done 😮‍💨

OMB I'm buzzing with bee-light over all these flowers with pollen and nectar loving friends. Thank you for bee-ing a friend to pollinators! ❤️🐝🌸🦋🌻🐛💕

Michael - most states have a Native Plant Society. Here's the link for the Florida NPS (www.fnps.org). You may not have a local nursery that specializes, but I bet they'll have various species. You just have to ask!

We also have a California Native Garden - so much easier to take care of, instead of braving the allergies to mow the lawn! Drought-tolerant is a definite bonus: we haven't watered the yard in years. Your garden / meadow is beautiful! And bee butts!

Krystie Sketches

Yay for native gardens! My garden insects are some of my favorite "pets"!

Jo Alexander

So great! I love all of this!

Charlie

So very very cute indeed! what lense are they using as those photos are bonkers 😍

Spencer Parks

Beautiful! I hope to some day have land that I can do this with.

I’m a new patron!! All because I fangirl over Krystal and her native bee work🐝 I have a little courtyard of California Native Plants that brings me complete joy! I was one of first day native bee flashcards people!

Jessamy Ritchie

OMG love!! How do you stop invasives from joining in? Sorry if asked n answered already, looked but no finded.

Jessamy Ritchie

Also, do you weed around each plant or let it all be?

Alie Ward

We weed out the invasives! It's a lot of work, but we're lucky to have Wild Yards Project available to do a lot of weeding.

I used to keep bees but they often didn't survive the Wisconsin winters, even with treatment and feeding them. Broke my heart when my ladies died. But now I've started watching for native bees...and I see them everywhere. Thank you for giving me the joy of watching bees without the responsibility of keeping them.
