It's the -ology that started this whole shebang, my friends. Looking up "curiology" decades ago changed my life -- and I guess, maybe yours a little bit?

So in prep for World Emoji Day on July 17, we went bonkers and made a 2-parter with THREE guests, all of whom are huge in the field of emojis.

So dive in, learn about everything from emoticons to comic art, language trends, tiny pictures, microexpressions, and so much more. Have you listened? Also drop your most-used emoji below. If you dare.

Thank you as always for being here. The show wouldn't exist without you! Truly.

So many heart and drool and calendar emojis,

Your Internet Popsward 📆✌️

Curiology (EMOJI) Part 1 with Various Emoji Experts - alie ward

Thumbs up? Thumbs down. Skulls of joy. And so many expressions of pain and comfort. This, my babies, is the -ology that sparked this whole podcast. Curiology means "writing with pictures" but will certified emoji experts agree that they are curiologists? Listen for behind-the-scenes drama,

😂😍❤️💕😊 excited for this episode!

Mowana Lomaomvaya

My brain unintentionally read the sign off as “Internet Popcorn”, so there’s that🍿😂

Anna Thompson

🤷 and 🎉 Also this episode should be a case study in great episodes: a topic I'd never thought about and yet found myself fascinated the whole time!

Cate Muenker

ok, how do you get a new emoji added? Who draws the prototypes before they become universal emojis? There are still many missing emoji's on iPhones, like tortillas, potato chips, peanut butter- ok, I guess I like texting about snacks! What about jellyfish, scallop, clam, sea urchin? More than 1 balloon to wish someone happy birthday? What about COVID corona virus, pipettors, or E.coli? The only choices for scientists are: 🧫🧬🔬🥼🧪👩🏻‍🔬🦠

goosejessie

I'm a millennial white lady so obviously my most used emoji is 😂

Mia Batol

Why do different generations interpret emojis differently and how do we avoid the miscommunication 😅. My teenager educates me as to what these emojis really mean? Even emojis 15 yrs ago mean something else now. 🤙🏼

Dave Langlinais

My MOST used emoji (because I work in freight transportation - one might say I'm a logisticologist?) is a simply "thumbs-up," for sake of expediency. However. HOWEVER. I get an unfortunate amount of political spam texts (so say we all...). And I usually reply to THOSE texts with a string of "middle-finger" emojis. Which is, apparently - because I don't often actually use emojis, and it's ranked based on use - my third-most used emoji, according to my phone. WELL. One day, fairly recently, a truck driver makes a report on the status of a delivered load, at about six in the morning. And I'm not at all mad, I'm actually extremely grateful, because it's often difficult in freight transportation to get timely delivery updates. And this guy is REALLY good about giving updates. So I appreciate the hell out of him! So, blearily, I text back a ...well, I THOUGHT it was a "thumbs-up" emoji... turns out I accidently hit the "middle-finger" emoji. His response was "HUH." Needless to say, I had to do a lot of apologizing, that morning. Anyway, one day (if you haven't already, I'm actually only about 60 episodes in to your podcast at this point, so you may have already covered it), you should do an Ologies episode on Freight Transportation. Because it's, in a very real way, the veins and arteries of the economy. Consider for a moment that literally everything around you (unless it was hand-made) has spent at least ONE trip on a truck, if not multiple trips - either to get the raw materials to a factory to produce it, or to get it to a warehouse, or to get it to a point of consumer distribution to get it to you. You're literally surrounded by stuff - everything - that has spent time on a truck.

As a Gramma who gets lots of pictures I use this 😍 and this 😘 a lot.

Julie Sparrow

Love Emojis and Ologies!! Very interesting episode. I love all stuff that is stickers and colorful, so I use lots of Emojis all the time. Sometimes a few good Emojis are all you need.

Yuri

🤣😘💖😁😜🥰👍🏽

Amy Goldfine

I had no idea that 🙃 mean sarcasm. But I also didn’t realize that 😂 is passé. I guess I am officially old!

Amy Goldfine

What are everyone’s most used emojis? On my phone mine are 😂😁🎉🤷‍♀️👏😬.

Amy Goldfine

Ok I guess the 😂makes me “cheugy” but how else are you supposed to react to something funny?

Erin Bridges

For some years I've liked using the water pistol + caterpillar to signify I am small and harmless but I feel attacked

Erin Bridges

OH and also emoji developers, please can we have more variety in nature emojis!! Hate when I go to refer to a flat shell but there's only a spherical one, or any other kind of butterfly or beetle!! And variety of architectural buildings would be awesome too! Love your work tho <3

Verena

Interesting point but I'm not sure if this is a generational issue. I've friends in my age group who use some emojis in very different ways. Might also be related to culture/socialisation?

Between Dumplings

🦪❤️🤣. My last three. Can’t believe it wasn’t 🥟🥢 Why no Bao?

Between Dumplings

Also, THIS was the one that started it all? Wild!

Ted Vician

I’d be interested in an episode about logistics and freight transportation. It would probably need to be refined down to some sub-field to fit into an hour or so.

Ted Vician

I’m a boring Gen X dude, so I mostly type words, like I’m Johannes Gutenberg or something.

Dave Langlinais

Refine to some extent, sure. There's literally college courses on Supply Chain Logistics, after all. But, having brokered virtually every kind of trucking over the last 12 years, and having some experience with vessel stevedoring, ports, and barging - I think I could cover the basics of everything in relatively broad strokes, over the course of an hour. I've done so as presentations before. And if I can, then - someone better qualified than me certainly could, as well. One thing that really fascinates me is how looking at a satellite image of the US at night gives you a very visceral sense of that "veins and arteries of the economy" I'd mentioned. And also where's a good place to go versus a bad place, as a trucker. Just pay attention to the cobweb of lights. Where the most strings of lights come together - that's where the best markets are. That's where you've got your strongest economies. Where they run parallel but don't intersect much (lookin' at YOU Nebraska!) ... not very good truck markets. Chances are not very strong or diversified economies, either.

Coal-Heed

🦷 I love this emoji. Is it a tooth or is it a large person bent over? and instead of typing "that's ok" try 👉🏼👌🏼 Emoji double entendres rule!

Coal-Heed

Have you ever tried having conversations using ONLY emojis? Worth a try, its slow, but seriously engages the creative portions of your brain.

Mia Batol

I'm sure it is but inquiring minds want to know! :D

Milan Ilnyckyj

This episode revealed how I am totally out of touch with the youths. All the stuff you immediately agreed was obvious I did not know at all 👍

Paul Hoffman

The "person with folded hands" character is one of the reasons many of us old skool Unicode folks were against the emojis being added to the Unicode standard. The character name was always supposed to be fully descriptive, and yet when U+1F64F (the code value for this emoji) was being considered for Unicode version 6, we could all tell that the name did not describe what most people thought the character meant. Adding emojis to the Unicode Standard brought a lot of new folks in, but at the cost of making the standard looser. (When there's an emoji for an old man shaking his fist at the clouds, well, I'll be there...)

floraandthefaun

same! in my friend circle we use 🙃 for awkwardness and secondhand embarrassment, or to describe having to front being ok when you aren't, kind of like the "this is fine" meme

choirqueer

I would also LOVE a Logisticology episode, even (especially??) if you just made that word up

Dave Langlinais

I actually did make it up - and I just checked (actually double-checked) if the word has ever been coined or used before, and - well, you'll be happy to know that apparently it is NOT a word in usage - but unfortunately it also probably means that Ole Dad-Ward will pass on the idea, because it doesn't quite count as an "ology." (the official term for 'the study of Logistics' is Supply Chain Management) Annoyingly, the Google algorithm seems to know precisely what I mean, because if you force it to 'include the word "Logisticology'" in search results (also now the Patreon auto-correct is flagging it - and amusingly also the word "Patreon") , one of the first hits is a series of images of BOLs (Bills of Lading). Which is the legal document that ALL shipments must be transported with, in order to prove chain-of-possession of cargo being transported.

Tyra pereira

okay, can I say how wonderfully eye-opening these two episodes were ❓I just wanted to say a few things. 1. As for using emoji in the office-There a few in MS teams which we will use from time to time in conversation. 2. As for using inclusive emoji, as someone who is of Indian descent, my people emoji are brown.

Athanasius

Using emojis in a legal name... the point about signing your name feels like a red herring, because have you SEEN some peoples' signatures? They are a squiggle that bares zero resemblance to their name (as used on the same document). So, I'm sure person-with-emoji-in-name would easily find a workable, repeatable signature to use.

Athanasius

I'll admit to having been grumpy when emojis first started appearing in (not Japan) social media apps. We're talking the mid-90s with the likes of ICQ and MSN Messenger. My reason at the time was that there were third party clients for those messaging apps, and often the official one would not only go and implement emojis but automatically turn emoticons (i.e. :P ) into them. This quickly lead to not everyone viewing a message having anything like the same experience of it! But we've moved far past those days, so I happily use emoji now.
