Curiology (EMOJI) with Various Emoji Experts - alie ward

Thumbs up? Thumbs down. Skulls of joy. And so many expressions of pain and comfort. This, my babies, is the -ology that sparked this whole podcast. Curiology means "writing with pictures" but will certified emoji experts agree that they are curiologists? Listen for behind-the-scenes drama,

Ella Sugerman

I've sent so many emoji kitchen emojis since listening to the episode that everyone I text is very tired of it

ScienceInTheArt

Loved it. However, as long as you were on the topic, it seemed obvious to me that one would prefer an engorged purple eggplant over a questionable green cucumber. (˃̣̣̥‿˂̣̣̥)

Alie Ward

aahah! Well in part 1, Jennifer talked about the cut up cuke, so that definitely... sends a message.

Alie Ward

Aaaahh! Which ones have you done? Do you have an Android? And do the emoji appear right on your friends with iOS?

Ella Sugerman

I have an android so they show up on my keyboard! I've been pasting them in as images for the apple folks but it's not as smooth. All the turtle ones are incredible and the punny ones (like dog+cold) are top notch

I wonder if there are some great stories about misread/misunderstood emojis. I was waiting to pick up my wife at the airport once, and I sent her a group of smiling cat face emjois w/ a question mark to let her know I was there waiting for her... She was like WTF, what does that mean? Where are you .... slow boil beginning ...

ScienceInTheArt

Oh. So true. I had never seen the cucumber emoji but I just tested it on my phone and….yeah. That’ll stay in the salad vernacular.

I wonder what our lives would be without emoji. Would be forced to type everything out or use the odd emoticon here and there...... 🤔

I'm 45 years old & a professional. Is it considered poor form or immature to use emojis in communications like texts or off hand emails?

Karyn Molines

When Alie asked about when will emoji appear in books, my first though was Dingbats! They're still found in books.

Karyn Molines

The idea that emoji represent emotions rather than physical characteristics (all the skin tones, genders, hair) really resonated with me. Instead of seeing "me" in a visual representation, my state of mind and physical presence can be the focus of communication with emoji.

Catherine Jameson

I kept thinking about the emoji keyboard categories! How they sort all 3000 characters in a way we can find what we're looking for!

Britt Kline

I’m so jealous of Android emoji magic!! 🪄

Keri Overall

I really liked the idea of using emoji to represent emotion. And I definitely went exploring on my Android phone, where I found an Easter Island Moai that I want to use a lot in my future texts! 🗿

Spencer Parks

Loved it! My most commonly used emoji has got to be the smiling winking face because I like to send a lot of sarcastic messages/comments and I need people to know I'm joking. ;)

Paul Hoffman

Thanks for the two-episode episode! I'm an emoji grump who uses them only because everyone else does, and you brought a lot of lightness to the topic. Just watch: I'll start venturing out beyond the five I normally limit myself to...

Rachel Gentile

❣️ i didnt know this one was an ! I used it in a work group chat and now its catching on

I loved these emoji episodes so much. I use this free app called Big that let’s you put a widget on your homescreen to display a message. I’m sure it’s supposed to be for inspirational quotes or whatnot, but I have used it for months to display a single giant emoji based on my mood. I use it to remind myself of fun plans (currently it’s 💺 for an upcoming trip) or often just to find an emoji that makes me laugh🦕. 🤷‍♀️

I read a lot of YA books and I'm starting to see them there! It's been pretty cool to watch over time how writers shift how they represent the ways teens communicate with one another, trying to figure out the right balance between "this needs to read as realistic to the time period it's set in" and "this needs to still be readable in a year, five years, thirty years"...and currently I think a lot of writers are finding that balance by putting emoji in their characters' text messages!

I use them all the time, and I absolutely love them. They are so silly. I especially like mashing up fruits with dogs/cats and different emotions with the snowman. My sister has an iphone and there's an app she bought for a few bucks so she can make them too.
