IT'S HERE. Squirrels. My dream Sciuridiologist Dr. Karen Munroe was kind enough to answer one million questions and we covered everything from birdfeeder strategies to nest building, acorn hiding, lies that squirrels tell, tail twitches, decoding squirrel noises, TikTok mind control spells, Marvel movies, the rarest squirrels, the biggest, the most colorful, darker morphs, squirrels and Indigenous Culinology, and why school campuses have such robust squirrel culture.

It’s the episode we’ve always needed. And your questions were so funny and insightful and as always, add so much to the discussion. What did you think? Oh and a little update on my pneumonia is at the end. Thanks for bearing with an encore last week when I was in the hospital. I think I'm on the mend.

Okay, go watch a squirrel.

Losing my mind with excitement,

Ol’ Alie Ward, friend to skwurlz

SQUIRRELS!!!! I cannot wait to listen. We have no SQUIRRELS in Australia, so when I have travelled to the US I am that person taking photo and gushing over how cute SQUIRRELS are. Though I recently adopted a cat and sometimes she puffs up her tail so much that she looks like a SQUIRREL.

Or New Zealand - but, there are totally people in Antarctica who have internet, and create beautiful time-lapse videos of the sky there.

Naomi Jane

Looking forward to listening to this one! Squirrels are one of those animals where their name is a verb - "squirreling" something away / "badgering" your friends etc. I wonder if there's a word for those...

Living in New York City, Squirrels are the pets that everyone can have as long as you have food to give them. When I first moved to NYC I made the mistake of carrying a PB and J sandwich in my bookback. Since I was drawing and taking color pencils out of my bag I left it somewhat open. Then I noticed a little head and two hands gently opening it more! I scooted the squirrel away but it did not give up, it kept coming from different directions, until it finally jumped on me! I screamed and walked towards another place and she quickly followed me along. I had to leave the east river park at that moment. jajaja. oh well. I now know.

Jeanné Lewis

I have seen this happen. More than once.

Kyle

Great episode! I was hoping there was going to be a conversation about the viral video of the squirrel staging itself to look like it was crushed by the broom. I'm guessing this was recorded before that came out.

Zed Shirogane

Can’t wait to hear it! I hope it goes over the weird noises they make, I was so surprised to find out that it was coming from such a little cute fuzzy creature it sounded so aggressive.

Kpelliss

Sure they’re cute, but how do I keep them off my macadamia nuts? Took 15 years for the tree to produce, 45 seconds for squirrels to discover they liked them….

Abby Grieb

Update on my garage squirrels, we discovered a massive hole chewed into one of our kayaks (!!????) and absolutely filled with walnuts. My husband has declared war. I think we need to patch some holes in the garage.

This episode sparked a whole lot of joy

I took in a baby squirrel that my younger cousin had found. Got a huge bid cage ( 5 x 5 x 3 feet ) and nursed him till he was full sized. He would run around the house and play with the dogs. He would come to me when I called to him. Super playful. Once he he started to look like he was hitting maturity, I started talking him outside to play in a big pecan tree. Then started talking him out there for longer and longer. A couple of times I thought he had finally left, but he came back down and back inside the next morning. One day he hopped off and ran out to another larger patch of trees that I had seen some other squirrels playing in; and that was it. He was finally off living a happy little squirrel life.

Brenna Pixley

Also have you heard of the ghost squirrel story on snap judgement?

Brenna Pixley

I heard they can live l to 20 is that true ?

RJ Doidge

Omg listening right now and “yeet it or eat it” said by Alie Ward is my new favorite thing ever.

Olivier Calas

Why are they so nuts? Do they get caffeine somewhere? Anybody offering them therapy? Really….

Alie Ward

Do you ever see any of the stripey palm squirrels tat escaped the Perth Zoo??

Alie Ward

Oooh, that's a good question. Animalnounverbs doesn't have a ring to it.

Alie Ward

Listen, she knew you GOT THE GOODS

Alie Ward

is it gingerbread? that may be the first issue. We do talk about corn plastic though!

Alie Ward

I say your name in this one, my OLOGITE friend!

Alie Ward

When was that?! I haven't seen it, but also I've been out of my mind with pneumonia for weeks

Alie Ward

Aaaah, yes we do! Quaas, kuks, moans, flags. Even me getting bitched out by a ground squirrel

Alie Ward

Oh dear! That is a pickle. Do they make tree nets? I feel like I've seen those in orchards...

Alie Ward

NOOOOOOO! Abby, I wondered how that was going. I said your name, we discussed your garage squirrels and wow. Where did they get these walnuts?!

Alie Ward

Oh that sparks joy in ME. I was hoping folks would like this one.

Alie Ward

And just think, you may see his grandkids all over the neighborhood now. It warms the heart!

Alie Ward

We discuss that in the episode!

Alie Ward

I offer them therapy a lot but they do not seem interested. They don't need my self-compassion workbook because they have achieved World Domination.

Naomi Jane

It really doesn't - disappointing! My searching has yielded no results (but some good long lists of these animalnounverbs!)

James R

Please more fluffologies! Honestly having this episode pop up in my feed today really shined a bit of light into an otherwise dark time for me as it’s the anniversary of losing my own dad to cancer two years ago. Thank you.

Amy Goldfine

I worked for a tech company whose founders were obsessed with superheroes/comics and every employee had to choose a superhero alter-ego. My work BFF was Squirrel Girl! (I was Mrs. Incredible / Elastigirl)

Donoiw

I really do like to think that when I see some. That The could be the descendants of the great Squirtimus Maximus: Child of the Hairless Ape-things. (Was his real name and is now his real title. ). It makes me smile too 😊

Underwater Corvid

Love this episode! You talked about our black squirrels in DC but I should’ve asked about our “white whale” squirrel with albinism here!

Kpelliss

We're gonna try small metal mesh bags on the clusters....(and now wondering if I could pickle the macadamias while still soft...hmmmm) I'll be sure to share if we get any away from the squirrels.....the better news? Our tree in Baja is producing after only 1.5 years....and no squirrels here!

Abby Grieb

I heard!!! We are in Michigan and there are a ton of black walnut trees around our house and the little red squirrels like to store them in our garage and apparently inside our kayak

Ketta

You literally summoned the squirrel to my feeders with this episode! Ive had feeders on my third floor fire escape for a few months now, and have only seen a squirrel once before today! After your episode finished, I spotted this friend hanging out! Do squirrels like suet? That's all I had, no loose seed.

Amy Goldfine

I had no idea that “college campus squirrels” were a phenomenon anywhere else than where I went to school!

Gabriella

I sent this episode to my grandpa who has squirrels stealing from his bird feeders all the time and he loved it!

choirqueer

A friend sent me a TikTok that referenced the Squirrels In My Pants song THE DAY BEFORE this episode came out. I had never heard it before in my life. [twilight zone music]

David Gallagher

Omg i Hope you touch on Germans attempting to say “squirrel” and English speakers trying to pronounce „Eichhörnchen.“ (Squirrel / Small horned Oak)

Ted Vician

One can “porpoise” a plane attempting to land it, for another example.

Amy Hujarski

I have binged Ologies since August 2022, after a coworker recommended it to me, and I am excited that there is a fellow Northeast Ohio ologist. I love this podcast and my pod dad.

Leah Rose

We all have a squirrel story... Mine led to a tattoo on my upper back. I love squirrels, to say the least.

Natalie W

Really enjoying this episode. HOWEVER, I think something is weird with the Spotify upload. I’ve tried listening from multiple internet connections, including both my home wifi and 5G, and I’ve tried rebooting my phone, etc etc, and the audio seems to be completely missing between ~0:56:20 and ~1:55:11. I also asked my partner to check in his Spotify app. Similar issue with PocketCast for my partner. Not sure if that gap is actual content or if blank content got in there somehow in the upload where the ep wasn’t actually that long, but wanted to mention just in case. Normally I acknowledge it’s a problem with my streaming, but this evidently is something with the upload. Hopefully I’m not the first one to mention and it’ll get resolved quick?

Squirrelmo

They ate my shed door!

Suzen Baxter

I just noticed the same thing

Gregor

This was a GOOD EPISODE. I mean, they all are really, but 🐿️.

Lizzie

Super late to the game here, but what about the white squirrels in Brevard, NC? Why are they white and only in that 1 place?!
