Okay, here we go! This week we do some deep learning on how machines do deep learning, and look at types of AI, why things suddenly shifted in the last 6-8 months, ChatGPT fails, what neurotech means for the future and who is taking what stance on it. We also cover brain data and why companies are thirsty for yours, “cognitive liberty,” advancements in brain research, and implants that could change your life. Dr. Nita Farahany is a law professor and neurobioethicist and is fascinating and balanced and brilliant. I am scared of what she knows.

Did you listen? What did you think? How did you feel about AI before and after the episode?

We worked super hard on this one with our meatbrains, and I hope y’all like it.

Your non-machine learner,

Neurotechnology (AI + BRAIN TECH) with Dr. Nita Farahany - alie ward

Machine poets. ChatGPT fails. Neurological surveillance. Brain implants that treat depression. Is it scary? Cool? Let's firehose some questions at Duke Law professor, neuro and bioethicist, author and TED speaker Dr. Nita Farahany. She explains the history of AI, the dawn of chatbots, what's changed

Im also hesistant to use these type of AI for some reason. I feel like it has the possibility of becoming really bad if in the wrong person’s hands. And No, I’m not ever getting an implant in my skull, F no 😶

Maria Armero

I loved the episode! though I wish it had been a two-parter! Like, it was very interesting learning how AI could be used for good. I wish there was a bit more about medical applications and such, but the explanation about how the general public are using the "creative" AI tools, how they actually work, was super interesting. I hope there's an encore with more data, considering how fast this technology is growing.

Will Clark

I wonder what are some of the worst examples of G I G O?

Patricia Brewster

Loved it. Gave a better understanding why I'm have such a hard time stopping smoking. AI, well I know more but still not enough to form an opinion. Personally coming from ranching its hard not thinking AI means anything other than Artificial Insemination.....

Moo

"We trained this thing on Reddit/Twitter!" Oh great, so it's as racist / sexist / ageist / transphobic as the populations of those sites.

Alie Ward

I don't want them learning from my meat!

Alie Ward

Thank you!! Sorry every episode is not about squirrels or beer!

Alie Ward

Oooh, good idea! Perhaps a ... Technoneurology all about brain implants one day

Alie Ward

In the last few months, Twitter has become soooo much worse. It's such a garbage hellscape. Like walking into an abandoned amusement park

Alie Ward

Aaahaha, I'm sure some sperm banks use AI in their databases...

Maria Armero

Thank you, pod-dad! I hope you're feeling better! 🧡 Love from Spain.

The other my boss showed me a program that record meetings and show % of people who spoke in the call, as well as the emotions portrayed within the meeting, scary stuff

Deacon Raid

It’s an interesting episode but also kind of a bummer because it seems pretty clear that all the promise of AI is going to be turned to exploiting people and maximizing profit.

Deacon Raid

I was surprised that wasn’t mentioned when Musk came up. The one nice thing about musk is that he’s destroyed the illusion that billionaires became billionaires through their own intellect and hard work.

sarah de jesus

Thank you so much for making this episode it made it easier to understand wth is going on. even though i am still scared and the world is scary, i’m glad to be more informed 🥲

Patricia Brewster

AI That’s a subject to explore. Endless science there. From choosing the right sire to insemination.

Alex

Loved this episode!! I don’t know where else to ask this question so I’ll ask here. I’ve just learned that neurogastroenterology exists. My gut is in charge of some motor control? Is leaky gut real? We NEED this ologist, Alie and team!

Dorothy Hoover

Thank you again for all you do for your fans out here, Dad Ward. I am addicted to Ologies. You are most wonderful

Amelie Lu

There will be people using AI for this, sure. But there will also always be geeks - the kind who keep developing free Linux versions, free firewall operating systems, platforms like Proxmox and such - , who will work to make AI accessible and useful for the broader population. I'm in IT and I can say that this sector attracts people who really want to improve things and find the best solutions for customers/... instead of making the most profit (although, of course, this does not apply to everyone; bad apples exist everywhere).

Frankie

YES I want to know this too. I was once diagnosed with gallstones by TWO doctors, got an ultrasound, and my guts were perfectly healthy - turns out it was my BRAIN that was all stressed and f*d up; the mind-gut connection is very physical and real. Let's hear about it!

Miriam

In case you wanna hear more from Nita, another podcast with her as guest aired just this week at "your undivided attention"

Isabelle Newman

This episode was absolutely epic! And what an incredible perspective she has…loved this

Dad Ward!!! The Dog episode is being weird. Won’t let me or my partner listen to more than just the intro and some ads before it decides it’s over. I work at a dog rescue and desperately want to listen. Only having the problem with that specific episode! Sorry if this wasn’t the right place to comment I’m just excited to listen to the episode.

Matt Lavallee

I had the same thing happen! I did get it to work by marking it played, then marking it unplayed, then downloading it (HAD to download it). Good luck!

Joey Zweig

Still no dice :( I will continue on my mission to try and listen to this episode

Dana Anderson

this is about the main feed post today, as someone whose dad literally had a heart attack and then instead of resting climbed up a ladder to work on our roof I would be VERY disappointed in you if you didn’t take a break!!! lmao. Please try your best not to worry the whole time, our brain tricks us into thinking we need to freak out and worry to be safe, like it somehow prevents the bad things, but we don’t!! Remember the stress is the bad part for your body, so you’re not allowed to worry about taking a vacation while on your on a much needed and deserved vacation!

Dana Anderson

I had to learn that not everyone can relax, sometimes it takes a little mental whack a mole otherwise you’re just going through the motions and silently freaking out in a beach chair and only appearing to be relaxed lmao

Eric Chant

We love you dad! Please please take all the time off, we all will still be here, beaming money and joy and adoration. Taking a break when your dad dies is not a break! That's grieving and life admin. Take a proper break and we will wait very quietly and be so full of joy for you.

Allison Babberl

I'm so excited for you to take this very needed break and I cannot wait to party with you when you're back and more you <3

Allison P

Proud of you for putting yourself first, Alie! Of course we'll all be here when you're rested and ready, however long it takes.

Don Elliot

I commented on your video already, but I’ll add here more encouragement to treat yourself well and know that letting go for a while is okay. OK. AI .. the thing that disturbs me the most is the idea that AI can “write/compose” music and/or poetry. No. Ask Chat GPT this : “what experiences have you had in the past that inspired you and what were the circumstances that helped you discover this music?” That is, when I compose music it is not an “on demand” or some force of will that brings it about. I listen for it and it comes from within and without at the same time. If I think back to pieces I composed I couldn’t tell you how it happened. The composition/artwork came from a spiritual place, if you want to call it that. The experience for me is a direct confirmation that there is something more than us that we can provide a vessel for. Not any ‘god’ label of any kind, just a pure life experience. Anyway…. No AI production will ever have that singular identity that an individual has. If you just want more “music as wallpaper” while you work or cook or shop, that’s one thing. If you want to just listen and capture the essence of the artist, that’s another.
