Hey ologites! This is Susan, I work with Alie and have commandeered her Patreon for the moment while she's on rest. We've been thinking about possible topics and ologists for October aka Spooktober and curious if you have any ologist suggestions? Or other topic ideas?

Spooktober topics we're considering:

Mantology (FORTUNE TELLING)

Spectrology (GHOSTS)

Crotaology (SNAKES)

Homichology (FOG)

Pomology (APPLES)

Myriology (FUNERAL DIRGES)

Ponerology (EVIL)

Confectionology (CANDY)

Tell us in the comments if you know any experts that might be a good fit. Include a link to their bio or website or social media if possible. Topic suggestions welcome too. Thank you thank you!

Spooky topics we've covered to date

Comments

Scott Hanley

Cheers Susan, thank you for the update. I hope Allie is feeling better. 🙏🙏🙏

Mykenzie King

Even if it’s just a brief cameo I would LOVE if Shane and Ryan from the YouTube show Ghost Files were on a ghost episode

Megan Lynch

POMOLOGY baby!! woo hoo, fruits! (There are other fruits in pomology, some of which have Spooktober associations like pomegranates' association with Persephone being dragged down to Hell".

Sarah Mabel

Hmmm what about pagans? Unless that has been done? Or maybe costumes?

Allie Brown

Alex McDuffie (@duffdoesnaturestuff on Instagram) would be great for snakes! He’s not an academic but he’s very knowledgeable and is a python contractor in florida!

Esohn

Snakes!!! Also the Fog sounds epic!

Naomi Jane

I'm still after a teeth episode! Fangs?! 🧛‍♀️

Casscadia

How about an ology that talks about the science that goes into costume making? Maybe the chemicals used, fabrics, makeup, props, etc.?

Jacob Hollingsworth

Ghosts would super rad. I really want one on spiders as a generality or specifically Tarantulas. (I love the Jumping spider episode)

Krysten

Forensic toxicology

brucatini

Spectrology and miriology!

Donoiw

Myriology ( funeral durge) . I want some sad songs-of-old that I can sing.

Melanie Lee

Just putting in a plug from my snake friends that snakes aren't spooky and we shouldn't further the narrative that they are! Loving all the other ideas though :)

Dae

Confectionology (CANDY) Or Pomology (Apples)

Michael Nichols

Washington State University has an amazing tree fruit program that would be worth looking into for pomology.

Forrest Stotts

OOH!! Dirges and fortune telling!!! Also interested in Casscadia’s costumery science!!

Emily Maggert

Oh my goodness I want Spectrology! Sounds so spooky and interesting.

Jennifer Wagner

I would love an episode on Homichology (FOG)!

Taylor Wade

Begging you for an episode on parapsychology with the Rhine Research Center

Kiera McGarvey

maybe Tristan Gooley for this? he wrote a lot of weather related books

Rob Brennan

Maybe the history of Halloween? Halloweenology/Samhainology/Spoopology etc.

Emma Luck

Would love an episode on whale falls! Can think of nothing spookier than the communities of deep sea creatures feasting and living upon the bones of dead whales at the bottom of the ocean

Rev. Spank

Spectrology for sure!

Susanne Collins

Fog sounds soooo cool! More than anything though I hope Alie feels better soon and is resting resting resting.

Yngvi

Forensic entomology or Araneology

Emily Krieger

debbie downer here: what about an -ology on misogyny, truly terrifying? and what about those creepy folk goth songs from Appalachia, that are about death and all kinds of sad and scary stuff? I think those are based on or are old songs from the British Isles?

Snakes_N_Bakes

I am ALL about crotaology!!! Confectionology also sounds like it would be a lot of fun

Courtney Carey

Horror movies! Forensics! Forensic Entomology! Baba Yaga? Spooky folklore?

Dave Brewer

Candy candy candy candy candy candy candy candy candy!

William Andrews

Crotaology Confectionology Decayology Forensic Pathology

Lucy McGuffie

Is Horror-ology a real thing? I'd love to see a discussion on horror movies. Why we love/hate them. What cinematic techniques are used to increase suspense. Common themes like cabin in the woods, monsters, zombies, aliens...

Danae DeJournett

I want something on evil and ghosts and snakes for extra spoopiness. (That is not a misspelling.)

Picklepot

Ghosts and fortune telling for me. Also, I'm not sure this is an ology or not, but maybe something about the history and symbolism of gravestones?

Annalise De Young

Fog and candy sounds amazing!!! What about eels? Under the sea spooky lol

William Andrews

Lupinology (WOLVES) was already done Osteology (SKELETONS/BODY FARMS) DONE

Kerry Constantino

Urban mythology! Like where do regional scary stories come from?

Annalise De Young

Or something about sound effects or visual effects for creepy scary movies

Chip Locke

Echoing some others, something on the science of scary entertainment (horrorology, spookology, etc). That would be fascinating

Joe Porfido

Hello, I might be atypical in that I don't like Halloween. I have a good amount of anxiety around this Holiday. So maybe something in October that would be more joyful/uplifting would be my recommendation. Also the vastness of space is sorta creepy in a non Halloween way

Katie Peck

I feel like costume history or costume studies could be interesting. Maybe not spooky but def halloween related

Christina Pfaff

Frank McAndrew at Knox College is a psychologist studying creepiness. He's published about haunted places, ghosts, clowns, and general creepiness, all from an evolutionary perspective. He was my research advisor while I studied interest in serial killers as an undergrad. Could be a good pick for spooky month.

Sam and Katie

I'm still catching up on episodes, so I aplogize if y'all have done an episode with Caitlin Doughty (caitlindoughty.com) already. She's a mortician and writer who does a lot for funeral industry reform. She's given talks on death culture and rituals and I think she'd be a great person to talk to about those subjects. But I would also be also absolutely fascinated on an apple-ology since Apple Cinnamon is my PSL.🍎

Dev

Witches/salem stuff? Or like witchcraft? Idk what the -ology would be of that

Chris Moore

OMG SNAKES!!!!!!!! YAS!!!!! 🐍🐍🐍

Kimber Dunn

Ohhhh Fortune Telling for sure!!! Anything to do with death, funerals, mortician science.

Shanna Mandell

For Fortune Telling you could talk to the hosts of the Romanistan PodCast for guidance and being culturally sensitive. There might be an anthropologist who focuses on this particular part of cultures.

Jennifer Steinle

Funeral dirges! Oh please oh please oh pleeeeease!

Sarah Moore

Potionology? Haha I'm pretty sure the correct term is Alchemy, but I don't see why someone who is an expert in Alchemy couldn't also be called a potionologist???

Reuben Clamzo

Cryptozoology! I'd say contact Blake Smith over at Monster Talk podcast. He knows everybody in that world, but approaches it froma a skeptical, scientific position.

Liser K

Human Composting, Caitlin Doughty!

Liser K

Human Composting!

Mia Batol

Mantology, spectrology and confectionology are my vote!

Noël Ingram

I know that you already have one on mythology proper, but you could do zombie mythology with Dr. Sarah Juliet Lauro at the University of Tampa! https://www.ut.edu/directory/lauro-sarah-juliet I took classes from her when she was completing her PhD and she's a delight!

Melissa Deufel

Candy…and apple…and of course then, candy apples 😂 🍎

Levi Smith

A vote for Myriology!

Kasey Crouse

Michelle Tea wrote an excellent book on Tarot readings, she might be a good resource for "Fortune Telling"

Darren Bush

A second for Caitlin. She's brilliant.

Maria

So many good suggestions here! I love it 😁 I don't know if it would fall under some of the other ologies that's already been covered, but an episode debunking the flim flam surrounding the Uncanny Valley phenomenon would be very interesting.

Chris Moore

Butch Brodie III at UVA is an eminent snake biologist (studies coevolution of poisonous newts and poison-resistant snakes!), a character, and great mentor and advocate from what I hear. Joe Mendelson III at Zoo Atlanta has done some really cool work on sidewinder locomotion (from microscopic scale structure to building sidewinding robots that you at least have to look at on the internets), used to play in a touring punk band, is a character, and has been an advocate for accessible fieldwork.

Al

This ☝️

Dylan V

Everything from Homichology down sounds awesomely spooky!

Darren Bush

Taphonomy. Study of graveyards. Pretty cool stuff.

Guido

Mummiology (mummies)! Other than an Egyptologist, you could also interview curators and scientists that work on crypts around the world. One example is the bioarcheologist and antropologist Dario Piombino-Mascali, one of the curators of the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo (resting place of Rosalia Lombardo and many other interesting people). He also helped with the restoration of the catacombs and the transfer of the body of Rosalia Lombardo in a new sealed custom-made glass coffin that was necessary in order to stop her decomposition. From his linkedin @dariopiombino : I am a physical anthropologist focusing on palaeopathology and mummy studies. Currenty, I am scientific curator of the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo and since 2007 head the "Sicily Mummy Project", a multidisciplinary investigation of the preserved bodies' collections scattered around my native island. Since 2008, I am explorer of the National Geographic Society, and do my best to involve the general public into the fascinating world of mummies. I cooperate with several mummy centres around the globe, love books, foreign languages, antiques, art and nature. Edit: it's not a metropolitan catacomb like those in Paris, I think it's different enough to be its own episode, especially if you focus on mummies and their preservation.

Chris Moore

But also, I know of “ophiology.” I still have much to learn, so snake it up please ❤️🐍

Amy Lee

Funeral dirges, evil, and candy! A deep sea episode would be fun for Spooktober, or anytime really :)

Chris Moore

But also, any and everything Ologies does is magical and perfect! Thank you!!!!!!

Darren Bush

Have you had Mary Roach on? Author of Stiff. She's great. The chapter on cadaver research to solve crimes is gruesome and very, very cool.

Smoked Gouda

Ghosties ghosties ghosties!!!! Please!

Peter Jardine

Undertakers / Funeral Homes? Autopsies? Necrology? Snakes for sure. History of Wizards and Witches?

Al

•+1 to Caitlin Doughty for Human Composting! •Pagan theology/something to tie in with witches would be neat! •Superstitions? •How do we feel about tarantulas? 🕷️

Elaine Roman

Bat conservationist, Kristen Lear PhD. BatsForLife_Kristen Kristenlear.wixsite.com

Jenn Macgillivray

Costumes! Demons! Mummies! Poisons! Serial killers?

Annmarie Everhart

Dr. Bruce Greyson is an expert on Near Death Experiences and a Doctor of Psychiatry at University of Virginia. I think he would be a fantastic guest ologist for the podcast! https://www.brucegreyson.com/

Jenn Macgillivray

Or funerals in general: embalming, cremation, etc.

Miranda Rose

The spider web weaving or courtship behavior!

Leah Rebecca

Tea/ tarot reading, anything witchy!

Kelli Brockington

Samhain (Four Greater Sabbats (Wiccan Holidays)) or Dios de los Muertos & ofrendas

Maggie Ginoza

On the snake topic, I can personally vouch for Ed Metzger (@thermoregulator_ on insta) and his ability to talk about pythons (specifically the Burmese ones invading the Everglades)! Spooky snakey swamp invaders? He knows other things about reptiles, invasive species, and the everglades too

Annmarie Everhart

There's also a department at University of Virginia that studies parapsychology, including NDEs and past lives research.

Jae Steinbacher

I was thinking about horror fiction! But there are so many amazing horror writers I think it would be tough to choose. (Some standouts tho, who would be more available than Stephen King, include Stephen Graham Jones, Joe Hill, Cassandra Khaw, Gemma Files...) But also a horror movie discussion with Jordan Peele 👀

AtoBtoL

What grave symbols mean! I took a tour of Canada's oldest cemetery and was amazed to learn all the grave symbols and engravings meant different things. I don't know if that's an ology though lol

Kathryn Brignac

Yes to funeral dirges, ghosts and the suggestion of witches!

Kyle Harper

+1 for both Caitlin Doughty and Mary Roach. Both of them have written some great stuff about death, cadavers, funerals, ghosts, etc. Is Halloweenology a thing? That would be fun!

Vincent Beck-Jones

Triskaidekology. Study of the number 13 or triskaidekophobiology... Study of fear of the number 13. (I made these words up, kinda...)

Audrey

I know we’ve had graveyards, but tombstones could be interesting? Or storytelling?

gg

Yes, but what about Snakes on a Plane? Don't tell me it's a movie!

Deacon Raid

Dr Gerry Carter at the Ohio State studies vampire bats. He was a key speaker at the North American Symposium on Bat Research. Theresa Nichta at MTBC can probably hook you up, but his contact info is readily available too.

Ang

I’d be interested in Evil or Ghosts. The concept of evil, how it differs culture to culture or over time. For ghosts, would it be the history of ghosts? Scientific explanations for ghosts?

Marlis Cheeseophile

How about embalming...where the heck do all those chemicals come from and who manufactures them? Related is mummification of course... which quickly leads to different cultural practices.. and also, what about how/why hair and nails keep growing after you're dead and buried? So weird! Somebody must study post-death growth in humans and animals... what's the sweet spot, where death ends and decay begins? How long before you get ripe and "turn?" When people sat Shiva in the old days, was the number of days based on a typical expiration date? How about the study of how and why different cultures sit with bodies before they bury 'em? What about people that appear dead but are not? Study of zombification? Anthropologist and writer Zora Neale Hurston studying zombies in Haiti??? That is one interesting story that deserves a deeper dive! https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/claiming-space-when-happened-when-zora-neale-hurston-studied-voodoo-haiti/... and then there's anthropologist Wade Davis, "Serpent and the Rainbow" guy (movie by same name starring Pullman, a bit of cultural mayhem there, book was better) he studied zombies... https://daviswade.com/wade. There's an intersection of much darker stuff when you start looking at zombies-- slavery and oppression... somebody must be ologizing around that... super-interesting

TJ Mckenna

I love snakes, fog, apples, and candy ideas, but i was also thinking about costumes! I think maybe fashionology??? Get well soon Alie!

Yuri

Why are black cats considered unlucky (so unfair!)?

gg

Is there an ology dealing with ESP? I took an extension class and found it's the only science that always has to prove its existence. Having lived in Newport RI, I, my mate, and her cat saw a resident ghost. She had the hots for me which was fine but another friend lived with a ghost who was jealous of her. Outside of the walking up the stairs in heels, she talked to me inside of a dream.

Clayton Cromley

Paganology, to cover the ancient festivals — like Halloween — still celebrated "undercover" by non-pagan societies. Could also dip a toe into Wicca (witchcraft)

Sarah

Mantology and Spectrology!!

Chris

Evil!

BigHighFive

Dia de los muertos - historically, Egyptian embalming or other ancient cultures, fear as an aphrodisiac, cascadia subduction zone, cryptozoology.

Megan H

Witches or witchcraft!

Leah Rose

I was trying to find an "ology" for ancient Egyptian mummies... came across Biomedical Egyptology, which I guess covers how ancient egyptians mummified bodies, as well as their diseases/perception of diseases. I think this would make for a really interesting episode!

LZ

Wait til my kiddo is older (is a teen now) ‘cause I predict they’ll be a snake specialist… 🤞

Leah Rose

I found this somewhere: "biomedical Egyptology." Seems to cover ancient Egyptian diseases & whatnot, as well as their practices for preserving the dead.

ScienceInTheArt

It would be great to see A HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN itself. Where did this spooky, holiday originate? Why do we ask for candy and, is it getting more popular or less?

Leah Rose

Yes!!! She is incredible and so fun to listen to. :)

MJ Boyle

Mantology (Fortune Telling) or Myriology (Funeral Dirges!)

Scott Rollen

That's what I came here to suggest as well. Why we do this whole Halloween thing anyway and all the other stuff Christianity co-oped. Wasn't sure it was a real word, but a quick search turned up an entire podcast already out there on the subject. Maybe Alie should talk to Ashley: "ABOUT THIS PODCAST Noun [n]: the study of paganism, folklore, witchcraft and dark history. Join your host Ashley as she dives into the magical, secret and ancient pagan world." Link: https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/paganology-ashley-zx2OHWtCSni/

Jason Yuan

Human sacrifices from different cultures

River Canina

I don't know of any professionals in the field BUT I would absolutely love an episode on Crotaology

Ted Vician

Yes to cryptozoology! Try contacting Dr. Emily Zarka. She hosts the PBS show **Monstrum** (https://www.pbs.org/show/monstrum/) and did shows on Mothman, Slenderman, Yetis, and loads of other modern and traditional monsters.

Cass

Ghosts, Snakes and Evil! 👻🐍😈

Khrystina Bailey

I'm feeling fog and apples But also, I thought Mantology was going to be manatees, and now I'm going to need a manatees and dugongs Ologies - Sireniology?

Christopher Blubaugh

Gotta get Carl the Fog 🌫️ to drop some zingers on Homichology!

Tegan J

In honour of the dadward podmum nomenclature, thanks podaunt Susan!

Paige McLachlan

Mummification/burials/death rituals. Not sure what the ology would be though 🤔

Lisa

I agree taxidermy!!! Creepy but very interesting 🤔

Marcel Al

The podcast Snake Talk has many snake experts! but the absolute DREAM for a spooktober ep is an Ask a Mortician and Ologies crossover episode!! I would love to listen to Allie talking with Caitlin about literally anything. I'm not sure about the Ology tho :(

Jballoon

Fortunate telling and Tarot 😗

Eleonoora

I’m begging for tarantulas and other big spiders

Nathan-Andrew

Cryptozoology with Blake Smith of the Monster Talk podcast. Or Weirdshitology (yes, it’s a real ology!) with Dr. Jeb Card

Pseudonym Jones IV

Myriology -- it just speaks to me Gravedigging (sextonology?) would also be fun

Sonjabird

Mantology! Myriology! Ponerology! Wish I knew an expert for you!

Ashtron9000

Great options! My preferences in this order are: Mantology (FORTUNE TELLING), Spectrology (GHOSTS) and Confectionology (CANDY) 🔮 👻 🍬!

Robb and Carol Hermes

You have done some episodes on spiders before, but perhaps it is time to witness the tarantula migration of southern Colorado! They are fascinating creatures frequently seen crossing the highway in the late afternoon in August, Sept., or October, casting enormous creepy shadows. To get you acquainted with the topic I am adding a link describing the "migration": https://visitlajunta.net/tarantula-trek/ and another link that talks about why tarantulas go on a "walk about" https://www.sciencetimes.com/articles/27969/20201030/thousands-male-tarantuals-will-migrating-roads-find-mates.htm. Here is a great video with a retired entomologist https://chooselj.com/tarantula-festival/. and a news article talking about all of the states that have migrating tarantulas. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2023/08/21/brown-tarantula-mating-season-six-states/70645946007/ There are some very personable entomologists being interviewed in those videos, including a charming CSU Stem Center instructor named Maia Holmes (https://stem.colostate.edu/community/maia-holmes-entomologist/), a retired entomologist, Whitney Cranshaw (https://agsci.colostate.edu/cranshaw/extension/) and an evolutionary entomologist working in Denver named Paula Cushing: https://www.dmns.org/science/zoology/staff/paula-cushing/ Good luck, and best wishes to Alie as she rests up!

Antoinette Palmieri

Spectrology and maybe see about interviewing the folks who wrote “the ghost studies” Brandon Massullo? I found the book fascinating.

Jessi B

Magusology: science of magic. Or the science of witch craft.

SmoothKriminal

SECONDED! Would that be human thanatology? (as opposed to corvid thanotology?)

Michelle Lee

As a person who has a low bar for spooky things, I *love* the idea of Pomology for Autumn!

Marisa

Confectionology (CANDY) Would be interesting and very on brand for Halloween. I’m also just curious about Spectrology (GHOSTS)

Ali Vessels

I know you already did egyptology but a special ep specifically about mummification would be awesome!

Margi F

Ooh I want to know more about Myriology (FUNERAL DIRGES)

Wayne Hovey

How about plain old mythology? But I see that you've done that one twice...

Al Hamm

Myriology, especially including those outside of the mainstream in the USA, like jazz (practices in New Orleans) and sky (practiced by some Buddhists) funerals.

MB

For sure confectionology!

Dean Deters

Mantology and Confectionology sound interesting!

Julia Hutton

Homichology (FOG) would be incredible!!!! I wish I knew someone who specialized in it. If you can't find anyone, I'm happy to teach you how to make Fog in a Jar. And I have loads of fog stories 😅

Alex Kim

Candy, snakes and apples!

Ry_ofthetiger

I don’t see a lot of votes for Ponerology but I think it would be super fascinating!

Fern Long

These are all good - decisions! But I think I can can see/hear a MANTOLOGY episode in our futures.😎

Fern Long

There's one other person I'd love to hear an interview with, @geodesaurus on Instagram who does a series called, Spooky Lakes. So good!

DeWaine Tollefsrud

Maybe Día DeWaine Muertos and monarch butterfly migration. Not really an ology I guess. But I felt the need to need to chime in.

Plural Z Alpha

All of those topics sound great. Mantology and Spectrology especially! What about the history of costumes or disguise as a topic?

Riannes.reptiles

I need a snakes episode! I've been wanting one forever! They're my favorite animal

Kevin Wilson

oooo for Myriology, you should check out Lauren Eliza (@lauren.the.mortician)!! I've followed her on TikTok for a while now and is suuuuuper knowledgable, eager to educate people, fun/entertaining, well spoken, all the things!

Emily Jones

Myriology sounds amazing, even more so if you can work in seances and “spirit photography” of William H. Mumler🥰

Deke Cisco

Evil, snakes, and ghosts. Please! I don't know if it is an ology but Halloween would be a good episode

Rose Moon

The history of Halloween would be cool. Also Spooky Lakes - @geodesaurus does IG stories about them. And who doesn't love candy?

Tyisha

LOVE Mantology - also hauntology might be a really fascinating discussion

Olivia

ponerology sounds awesome! i think the psychology aspect would be cool. maybe costume-ology?

Monica Olvera

Love what’s been suggested. I’d love to know more about association between black cats and Halloween. Would also like to know more about autumn games or activities and their relationship to Halloween , such as bobbing for apples, or making caramel covered apples

Gordon Haas

Suggested Ologist: Benjamin Radford, paranormal investigator, folklorist, author of more than 20 books, including "Investigating Ghosts: The Scientific Search For Spirits", "Bad Clowns", and "Tracking the Chupacabra: The Vampire Beast in Fact, Fiction, and Folklore". Also 1 of 3 hosts of the podcast "Squaring The Strange". Website: https://benjaminradford.com/ Twitter: @BTRadford FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/ben.radford.58

Heather Goble

I don't know if there is a more specific word other than cryptozooology but I know someone who actually gets paid to study Bigfoot! His Instagram is @rangerboah. He is first and foremost a paleontologist but by night he searches the PNW for signs of the elusive squatch.

zombot

Frogs? Ribbitology?

Fiorelily

Pls take care of yourself Dadward! As for ologists, a wonderful candy-ologist (sucrology?) Is Greg from Lofty Pursuits in Tallahassee FL. His YouTube channel is chock full of old-timey candy history. Also, how about a FX makeup ologist who does spooky gorey FX for the spooky season? Like how has special FX makeup evolved from the Bela Lugosi-Era of scary movies?

Una T

Witches? I couldn't find what the ology would be called. Maybe just anthropology of witchcraft? Also, please tell Alie we are all happy she's taking a break and there is such a long back catalog of ologies episodes I am not getting bored hearing old episodes for the first time/relistening because I forgot.

princenocturnal

Witchcraft or Paganism would be a fantastic topic

Marianne Thomas

Ooh! A pomology episode would be delicious! Don't know any relevant ologists for these but I look forward to hearing about them. Thanks for giving Dadward a break 💗

Alican Akaslan

Spectrology, Mantology and Paganology would be great

Peta Luck

what about costumes/dressing upology? It's a total mystery to we Aussies :)

Donia Conn

Is there a subset of mythology focused on ghost stories? I have always been fascinated on how much of our folklore focuses on ghosts, witches, and the supernatural.

BolognaShoes

Myriology (FUNERAL DIRGES) !!

Jaclyn and her cat Phil

I don’t know of any experts but I love all of these topics and am so ready for Spooktober!

Felicia Stelsel

Witches for sure!! 🙏🏻 also, scarecrows, mummies, Frankenstein, & werewolves. Perhaps, an episode of Dad Ward sharing your favorite fall tips, food, activities?

Adam Foote

I like the ideas of snakes, fog, apples, funeral dirges (and other death/mourning music!), and candy!

Kara

Colin Dickey writes from a sociological perspective about WHY people believe in superstition/the supernatural/occult/extraterrestrial, I absolutely love his book "Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places." I would love to hear him interviewed! Website: https://colindickey.com, IG: https://www.instagram.com/colindickey/?hl=en

Courtney Jones

Is there an ology about eco friendly burials?

Cindie Flaig

SPELEOLOGY (scientific study or exploration of caves). Alas, I have no expert suggestions, but think this would be a spooktacular Spooktober topic!

Rachel Titsworth

These all sound fun, but I'd vote Mantology. Tell our dad to take all the time she needs resting up!

Ashlee Dent

I don’t have an ologist in mind but I’m curious about ghost story telling —> story telling origins. Also, Histories and traditions of cultures around the world celebrating night, darkness, and spooky times.

Meg Kelly

IM SO EXCITED!!!! Mantology, spectrology, and homichology!!!!

S D Lennox

I'm all about Fortune telling! Would love it to include Tarot specifically 💖

Amy Elz

I once took a class at university called Evil and Demonic Christian Tradition which turned out to be a bait-and-switch as it was essentially an endless existential discussion on why bad things happen to good people so hearing about ACTUAL evil would be cool. I'd also be interested in Ghosts, Slither Sticks (snakes), and FOG! Much love to our Pod Dad and Mom as they max 'n' relax.

Coleen

I’d love to hear the scientific facts around folks claims of seeing and recordings(visual or otherwise) of ghosts! It seems to me this would be a perfect Segway into how the existing energy present in our bodies transforms at death. Also, an explanation and in depth analysis of evil would be much appreciated! Am I right in my thinking that evil feelings and actions are only exhibited in human beings, never in animals?

Andrew

Cryptozoology would be an interesting one!!

ava guihama !

Interested in Halloween Costumes/fast fashion more broadly!!

Don Nelson

Would love to hear an episode about Cynology, dog training, particularly specialty training such as cadavers, explosives, and other high intensity roles.

Don Nelson

Would love to hear an episode about Cynology, dog training, particularly specialty training such as cadavers, explosives, and other high intensity roles.

ChickenChomper

Although I love all of these ideas Susan - especially ponerology. I must ask (and I'm a bit new to this amazing podcast, so please excuse me if it's be done before)... what about parasitolgy (Parasites and parasitic diseases)? Parasites scare the shit out of me! Parasitic wasp especially... I know they are just livin their little waspy lives, but those little f-ers are the epitome of ponerology ;)

peach head

Fog, Evil, Ghosts! But pls all.

Dawn Dolobowsky

These are all great, but my three favorite are ghosts, fog, and fortune telling

BadWolf1701

Has there already been one about Witches?

Kaileen

I'm sure Alie will make all of the topics super interesting....but I also would like to add a creepy crawly to the mix... Praying Mantises! Praymantisology? What is spookier than a mama biting the head off of her lover to save her babies from being eaten by their father?! That is some dark shirt right there.

Mariana Gonzalez-Rul

The use of bugs, fungus, bacteria, etc, in criminal cases to find killers. Mantology (FORTUNE TELLING) Spectrology (GHOSTS) Crotaology (SNAKES) Homichology (FOG)

Pidgey koto

May 29th 2018 this was done :)

Bricklayer13

Vampires!!! especially the "last vampire" located in Exeter, Rhode Island!

Katrina Renee

astrology isn’t necessarily spooky, but is witchy, and would make for a fascinating episode, especially because there’s soooooo much more to it than just your basic magazine horoscope based on your sun sign. there’s so many incredible astrologers out there who have such a depth of knowledge, but one id recommend maybe talking to is aubrey houdeshell of the graveyard roses.

Rebecca Bayuk

Colin Dickey is brilliant. He also wrote a book about more cryptid type phenomena as well!

Tired Toad

All these topics are amazing and I really think snakes deserve their own episode by now. A subject which I belive there is alot of flim-flam to be debunked.

Megan E

Ooo these are my fave: Spectrology (GHOSTS), Myriology (FUNERAL DIRGES), and Ponerology (EVIL).

Ron

Definitely Spectrology

Owen

I would love spectrology and croataolgy for sure! I also listened recently to another podcast about "witching herbs" like belladonna and henbane and I would LOVE to hear Alie talk about witching herbs actual uses and their history/associations with witches.

Todd Reid

A few possible topics for spooky ologies 1/ Komodo Dragons -- an evil cold-blooded lizard with poisonous spit 2/ anything about voodoo 3/ Hyena -- a female mammal with a functioning penis. What !!!!

Kristin 🦦

My daughter votes for confectionology and I’d love pomology!

Lucy L.

I second this!!!

Figment

phobias, hallowed ground, cursed ground, dungeons, torture

Steve Kelem

After reading some articles books by NPR science writer Nina Teicholz, a scary topic would be the almost sciences, Epidemiology and Nutritionology. In her article, https://unsettledscience.substack.com/p/confounders-biases-and-the-sweetener, Ms. Teicholz discusses the biases, wishful thinking, and lies of epidemiology. If the article is TL;DR, scroll to the bottom of the article to see how the inverse triangle of journalism promotes sensationalist science.

Sriya Karra

OOO I love these! I was thinking about cryptozoology or even Grimmology (FAIRY TALES) where you analyze the dark origins and symbolism in classic fairy tales:) Buttt, Nk’Mip Snake Research @NkMip is the longest-running snake research project in Western Canada, and I'm sure they'd love to speak about their work!

Valerie Hanley

Anything death related is right up my ally lol. ALIE WE NEED CAITLIN DOHERTY ON HERE!!!! I need a fortune telling and ghost episode! But I would be cool with any of these

Amelia Dark

LYCANOLOGY (I checked it's an ology as it's been used in literature and I found a few articles) !!!! After the vampire episode, I've been praying for a werewolf episode! METAMORPHOLGY - Study of shapeshifting (people turning into animals) NORDIC MYTHOLOGY - Study of Nordic myths I'm feeling huldra folk, elves, gnomes and giants or FOLKOLOGY (?) - Study of folklore, spooky folktales like evil fae like selkies Then a bit more generally spooky and less fantasy I can't for the life of me work out what the OLOGY would be but the study of VICTORIAN POST-MORTUM PHOTOGRAPHY!? Also, thinking VOODOOLOGY, WICCAOLOGY or even a SALEMOLOGY episode to speak to an expert on the Salem witch trials. Basically, I have too many ideas and the Halloween episodes are my absolute favorites so I can only apologize for the ramblings - Love you Poddad

Not to bother AW - but anyone...didn't I just hear an episode about composting human remains? I can't find it now and I don't think I made this up...Halp? TY!!

Alie Ward

Sorry to disappoint, but there hasn't been an Ologies episode on human composting (yet). I love the suggestion, though. Caitlin Doughty is great. -Susan

I’m a little late to the party but I have a friend that’s pretty well-established in the paranormal field as an author & filmmaker! He’s studied so many things and published a bunch of books that it would be difficult to pin down what his specifically ology would be (maybe a broad historical paranormalology?) but hes extremely knowledgeable and very easy to talk to, I’m sure he’d be down for some spooky chats! https://www.mikericksecker.com/

Wait I have another one! Ghost Hunting! Check out Greg Feketik in Northeast Ohio - he is currently the lead investigator at the Ohio State Reformatory (Shawshank prison) and I used to work hunts with him regularly. This man knows his stuff! https://gefeketik.wixsite.com/author

Thanks. It was Science vs. It's a great topic. And, I think you're supposed to be resting, Missy. Please take care and check out TCM for grief/lungs situation. <3 Be well!! I love hearing the old episodes as I was late to this fab confab. I'm sure I'm not alone! xox

Ted Vician

I have this feeling that we’ve discussed that before. 😃

MYRIOLOGY?!?!? MYRIOLOGY!!!!!!

Ensign Garth of Izar

Urban Legends (branch of mythology/folklorology?) - Vanishing Hitchhiker, Choking Doberman, Various Hook-for-a-Hand killers. Jan Brunvand is the master.

Kari McCollum

Not sure if it has an "ology" but an episode about witches or the Salem witch trials would be amazing!!

SusanM

Mantology for me. I'm only up to Teuthology so next year will also be good for me 😜 be well Alie.

Stephen

I can’t remember if hematology has been covered or not, but most Halloweens aren’t scary without it.

Corey Barger

Someone from The Body Farm in Knoxville

Jessy Banninga

Mantology or Crotaology sound exciting! I've always loved snakes, and fortune telling as a topic seems dope

Kate Rice

Episode on pomology would be very helpful before going apple picking!

JoeyDaName

The idea of having some form of evil-ologist on the podcast scratches my inner philosophical itch to better understand the concept of good and bad, and why they exist? are they real? are they just concepts invented by humans? bruh

Greendesertdog

I think apples would be fun! I bet there's way more info there than any of would have thought.

Julia Porter

My ears would sing for any and all! I would love an spooky ep about the study of mummies (old pal Google gave the ology Biomedical Egyptology), maybe not this Spooktober but would def be a treat!

Lindsay Mixer

I dunno if this is an ology or not, but what about an episode on spooky storytelling? Like, the cultural/sociological history of horror or maybe a linguistic look at scary stories across time and space.

Leah Northcott Bentley

Hi Susan & Alie! I would like to suggest my friend, Jennifer Parkinson, as an ologist to interview. She is a delightful human who is quietly amazing. I like to tease her about being a vegan who specializes in studying when humans started eating meat. One of her discoveries last year changed the timeline of when humans started using tools. I am always fascinated when we talk, and I think you would enjoy interviewing her too! https://www.sandiego.edu/directory/biography.php?profile_id=821#:~:text=Dr.,Pleistocene%20hominins%20in%20East%20Africa.

I thought surely there would be mention of the taste buds we have on our butthole. Those of us with scrotums have them there too. Who knows how that evolved.
