Aaaand, we are BACK, folks. And jumping right into Spooooktober with a bona fide witch who straight up identifies as a witchologist.

Bring on the questions, curiosities, nagging wonderings and such. Very VERY excited to be back and thank you all so so much for all of the support. I read your comments on my video and was a tear-stained sappy mess at all of the support. I'm much healthier, rested, refreshed and have a new balance of work and fun that's only been helping my work. So turns out, resting DOES work. Who knew?

Okay, your witch questions. And get ready for a new tasty episode in a few hours.

Back in the saddle and giddy-upping,

Wardly

Welcome back dad! Big (consensual) hugs Wicca? Witches? Is there a difference? Are they the same?

Megan Duffy

Why are cats and whiches associated with each other? Like when did that start?

Madeleine Ash

What's with the pointy hats?? Where does that trope come from?

Nolan Childerhose

Welcome back DadWard! I missed you but I'm so glad you got the vacation you deserved.

Gemma

why are witches so queer?

Rayna

FTQA! Hexes and love spells — can they be done ethically?

Joyce Harden

oh so glad you are feeling better! broad question but there are so many different versions/cultures that encompass the word “witch,” so what exactly makes someone a witch?

Anna Thompson

Welcome back! I'm so glad you got the rest you needed and I can't wait to learn random facts again! How do modern witches see historical witch trials?

Kate Tildes

I'm a pagan witch and very excited for this!

Amber

Can anybody chose to become a witch or is there some attribute one must have/ be born with?

James Nance

Welcome back!!! Q: where did the idea that witches ride broomsticks come from?

Deacon Raid

How much of the original religion and practices have been lost? Also if you want a vampire bat biologist, talk to Dr Gerry Carter at The Ohio State. He was the keynote speaker at the bat symposium last year! I think Theresa Nichta at MTBC has his contact info.

Tony Vessels

Why would a witch weigh the same as a duck?

Brenda Graham

You are the shiznit, and I am a 74 yr old person saying so. Be well.

Hannah Gorrie

Dadward, so glad to have you back, and so proud of you for taking care of yourself! In the history of witch trials, were there instances of the condemned actually being practicing witches, or was all of it contrived nonsense?

Allison P

Okay so I don't have a question but I am so happy to hear that investing in yourself and taking the time to rest has been helpful for you. Welcome back!!

Willow Beller

What’s up with the moon and witches ? Like what is that connection between that little cheese rock in the sky and potion brewing?

Average_pi

Why do they ride brooms and wear pointy hats and are green and old

Kevin Parichan

Are witches and warlocks enemies or allies?

M.P., PhD

Witchcraft seems to be used as a catchall term for mystical practices that diverge from acceptable spiritual (read: Christian) practices. Is there really a specific set of accepted practices that can ge defined as witchcraft or is it historically a label used for marginalization and othering?

Kelsey lore

What is their favourite depiction of witches in fiction, and why is it Terry Pratchett's Discworld? ;p

BigHighFive

Are women’s clothes really notoriously missing pockets because witches would hide things for spells? Which mainstream movie most accurately depicts witches? And my wife wants to know how much she needs in her 401k to become a forest witch when she retires?

Antonia Clark

Is it true that the reason why dresses don't have pockets is because of witches? I heard that people would be afraid that witches would have potions or whatnot hidden in pockets to curse them, so they straight banned pockets for all female attire. Sus

phinn markson

Oh yay!! I can stop looking at my un updated Playlist all forlorn like. Whew!

Ma's Nature Walks

So glad you're back! Yay! My questions are, when did Wicca become synonymous with the term Witch in popular culture? I've also been exploring my culture's pre-Christian roots, and unfortunately, a lot of the symbolism has been coopted by white supremacists, namely the Nazis. How do you navigate thorny issues like that? Much as I admire the original meanings of many symbols, I stay away because I want nothing to do with that hateful ideology. Sincerely a non-Wiccan witch whose name is pronounced like "Emily" 😊

Kelsy Simpson

Where in the heck did the term "colder than a witch's tit" come from and what is actually supposed to mean?!?

The Joyful Spitfire

First time question asker here: the outfit, why so iconic? The black, the hat, the broom accessory…. Where did it come from?

Kelsey lore

But more seriously: Years ago I read on the internet that the idea of Eye of Newt and other grotesque sounding ingredients were actually code to keep people's recipes a secret. Is there any truth to that?

emily mcgill

Could that also include scooby doo and the witch’s ghost? 😏

Steve Cahill

What’s with the witchy chanting around the cauldron that’s always portrayed in all media?

Anne

We’ve learnt in a past episode that vampire folklore has evolved with the moral crises of each period. Did witch folklore go through the same thing?

Alex Vangelatos

Hi! First time question asker here... I'd love to know where the idea that witches melt if they get wet came from.

Annabelle

Can anyone become a witch with practice?

Marisa

You could cover the wheel of seasons which explains the connection with witches and Halloween!

Hannah Lefler

What all do you know about black witches in Salem or the influence individuals like Tituba had?

John Worster

How do you become a witch? Do you need a mentor?

Will

Can someone explain modern witchcraft to me? Are people for real about it or is it all just a big joke that I’m not in on?

Ma's Nature Walks

I had never heard of that, but it makes sense. I just figured it was the fashion industry's way of upselling handbags.

The Joyful Spitfire

Not a question just saying that I am so happy to hear you feel rested and found a new rhythm for work and fun ♥️

Cian verbridge

What is the difference between witches and wizards. How did the negative stigma develop in some cultures.

Olivier Calas

Thrilled to have you back in top shape Allie! Now, what’s with the iconic broom, is it just a sweeping statement of a sort?;-)

Sydonie S.

Where does the black cat and witch connection originate from? And how many cats do I need to be considered a witch?

Guido

Was witchcraft even a thing before Christianity? If yes, did it have the same negative connotation?

Payton Henderson

Where did witches and witchcraft originate? We love a good origin story <3

Kyla C (KAI-luh, rhymes with Myra or Lyla)

So glad you're back and doing better!! My question is about how and why witches are typically gendered? Is this limited to particular European cultures or ones colonized by Europeans? When did a witch become a woman?

E Jordan

Is the Wiccan religion really about witches?

Cass

Where did the whole "witches cauldron" idea originate? Was it Shakespeare or is it from earlier than that?

Allie Brown

What is the oldest mention of witches in history and how did the idea change over time?

Carissa Dev

I would also like to know how much to have in my IRA to become a forest witch when I retire! Haha!

Cicely Taylor

Why does modern media poetry witches with green skin?

Mariah Ramsey

Welcome back Dadward! We love you! FTQA: Why does it seem most people go through a witchcraft phase? And some of us never leave…?🔮

ConnieConnieBoBonnie

Pod dad!! I missed you, but I’m super proud of you for resting. Keep taking care of yourself! I think of myself as a witch and have a coven that gathers virtually or in person for the 8 sacred days of the wheel of the year. We have all come with different spiritual backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures. We have a lot of conversations about how to practice in the modern world without appropriating other cultures. It’s challenging! My solution has been to focus on what is happening in the natural world around me and how that connects to my life and my community. What recommendations do you have for people seeking earth-based spiritual practices who were not raised in a family or community that practiced? What common pitfalls do you see? What practices have emerged in modern times that you are really excited about?

Jennie Britt

Welcome back!! I’ve been listening for 2 years but I finally caught up to the newest episodes and gave in- I’m a Patreon supporter now! Weee! I’m super excited about this one. This question comes from a witchy small business owner in a southern state (if you know you know) just trying to make friends. How do you nicely combat judgement from non spiritual/witchy people? Im a nice person but I have people who don’t want to talk to me or buy from my business because of assumptions about witches/witchy people.

Liv

is witchcraft innately religious? can i be a witch/practice witchcraft without believing in gods?

Chris Curious

How old is the concept of a witch?

Paul Hoffman

What is the history of witches being considered "spooky" instead of just powerful?

Zinc

personally, I see the villainising of witches in folklore to be one of the biggest example of legends and stories being weaponised as tools for misogyny. in total contrast to this, do you think witchcraft and witches are inherently connected to nature, with yknow a lot of it being about animals and woods and natural ingredients?

StitchWitchGwendolyn

Hello! First time question-asker, and very happy to hear that you're feeling better, Alie! I would like to ask the wise Witchologist this - what are your preferred methods of cleansing and protecting yourself and your space? Particularly some alternatives that respect indigenous cultures and closed cultural practices. (Also, bonus question - favourite tarot card if applicable? Thanks!)

Breanna Segovia

Welcome back! It seems like witches are way more popular than their male counterpart, warlocks. So when and how did warlocks come into the picture? Was it just to mansplain spells to us and try to steal our thunder?

Brenna Wing

How did witches become associated with black cats and broomsticks?? When casting spells, how many different ways are there/how did they come to be?? (Point of a finger, a nose twitch, a wand, vocal spells, mental willpower, etc.)

Maria Kumro

The more I thought about this question, the more I loved it and needed an answer.

Scarlet P

what's the difference between witch and wicken? Is there a difference?

aa.brown.bb

For us who love witchiness without being religious/spiritual, what should we watch out for so as to not fall into appropriation? (Speaking as someone who aligns with "witch" in the independence, nature/natural science, feminist sort of way and loves the spookiness, rather than believing in supernatural)

Carissa Dev

Welcome back! So glad you took time to rest ❤️ First time question asker; Is there a notable increase in modern witchcraft? If so, is this surge linked to concerns about the oppression of women's rights?

Katie Hultman

I know that King James occasionally found an accused person innocent during the European Witch Craze. Do we know what evidence might have made people decide someone *wasn't* a witch? When did it become generally safe for kids to dress up as witches or pretend to do witchy things? Why did it become cool? What is your favorite fictional book or movie involving witches? Also, welcome home Dad! We love you!

Savannah Glenn

what’s the weirdest reaction you’ve gotten when telling someone that you’re a witchologist?

Merryn Lush

Can any animal be a familiar? Or is there a reason they tend to be (portrayed as, at least) cats and birds etc. Asking for a dog…

Gina Woolsey

Can you talk about the connection between traditions like voodoo and hoodoo and witchcraft?

Ann Hanlin

You’re back!! I hope you’re feeling way better. My question is—how cold exactly IS a witch’s tit? Okay that’s not my question. What were witches actually? Like, we’re they women claiming to have magical abilities? Or were they just women who knew how to make awesome remedies out of weird ingredients? I know close to nothing about witch origins and I’m so excited to learn morreeee.

Valkyrie

No questions, as I am a witch myself. But I would LOVE to have a few things be discussed: - how squares and rectangles apply to Wicca, witchcraft, and paganism - the variety of spiritual beliefs, whether a God and Goddess or many gods and goddesses - movie magic is not real magic, but even the mundane is magical - we are NOT out to eat your children or any other horrible things. BUT neither are we all good - the stigma against witchcraft is real and causes many of us to practice in secret - anyone can be a witch, not just those born into it! Gatekeeping is real and is ridiculous. - it's a young idea, while there are pulls from history (or European misidentification of history in Victorian/Edwardian erras especially, most of it is very modern. Even still we are growing. For example, as a group, we are stepping away from appropriative practices - 10 different pagans sit in a circle, and you have 10 different forms of paganism, regardless of covens or church groups. We are individuals and love it. - witches can be male or female, or anything in between! Warlock is typically thought as insulting - there is a lot of psychology. Some follow "love and light" but many take bits from Jung and work on our "shadows" and stepping into ourselves/our sovereignty - its about self improvement, and community

Lizard Queen

Why the broom? Where did this come from?

Sarah Meaden

Also my kid wants to know "how hot a witch's coochie is" because that is a saying at their school?

Sarah Meaden

What are the different "types" of witches? White magic witches, black magic witches, hearth witches, hedge witches, earth witches etc. Are there still differences?

Felix Lasselle

Is a witch specifically gendered, if so why? I fear it's yet another thing from history where men are scarred of powerful smart women and make up spooky fairy tales. Does this mean that men are not classified as witches? Wizard definitely doesn't give off the spooky goth vibes, warlock feels too pact with the devil-y.

Connor Chapman

Why eating of so many babies and stuff?

Otto

Did the Catholic Church create the negative narrative about witches as a power-grab against brewers? I’ve read that women used to brew most of the beer in Europe, which would have been a profitable business outside of the church’s control. All the imagery is there—cauldrons are kettles, cats eat the rats, crows eat the (spent) grain, and they brew potions after all… They used a ton of herbs back in the day (see: gruit). I spent many years brewing, did I imagine all this???

Jenn Macgillivray

Can you talk about witches’ marks in history? I did some genealogy research and found a branch of my dad’s family that goes back to colonial New England (our side ended up defecting to Canada in the revolutionary war.) I found a testament against an accused witch that was written by one of my great-great grandmothers that used the word “teat” way more than I was comfortable with. 😂

Misses Fishes

Hey, first time question asker- what was really going on with the Salem Witches? Was it ergot poisoning?? Or just more patriarchal oppression for kicks?

Sonjabird

Pointy hats. Long, pointy noses. Warts and greenish complexions. Black frumpy dresses. Brooms. What are the origins of all these stereotypical witch depictions?

Kathleen Lenz

First time question asker!! Did the persecution of (usually) women with knowledge of medicine and remedies set us back? I recall learning that the persecution of these women and their cats that they used to control rodent population contributed to the rise in disease around the time of the bubonic plague.

Scott Sheldon

I’ve heard that the reason why witches are associated with flying on brooms is that they would put a psychedelic salve on a broomstick that got them high and used the broomstick as a way to get said salve up into their nether regions. That can’t be real, right?

Kelli Brockington

Is there a Witch Uniform??? It just seems like a lot of work with the black nail polish & goth makeup. Long flowing black skirts & such, etc (such as Stevie Nicks onstage???) I guess I am too lazy to be a witch if that is required... I do not like to wear makeup - I rather have a few more minutes of sleep...

Katie Murray

How does the witchologist feel about portrayals of witches in media? Favorite? Least favorite? The examples that come most quickly to mind for me are: - the scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail where the villagers dress up a woman and put her on trial for being a witch, compare her weight to that of a duck, etc. - Wicked - Harry Potter - Sabrina the Teenage Witch I know there are billions more. So glad you took plenty of time to rest, Dad! So glad you’ve been resting more in general!

Kelli Brockington

DADWARD - BIG HUGS - I hope you are good to go and learn from this to take time for yo self!!!!

Scott Sheldon

I’ve heard that part of the reason the Black Plague was so bad in Europe was that prior to the outbreak, people would kill cats out of fear of it being a witches’ familiar and with less cats, means more rats with fleas, and then plague. Do witches historically have any impact as a reason for major events like that?

Kelli Brockington

Oh and - did the prosecution of "witches & familiars" during the middle ages assist in the Black Plague spreading - since they would kill all the cats (Evil - not!!!) due to the association with witches???

Shirley-Luz Enombo

This isn’t about Spooktober, I was just excited to see you on NPR :)

Cassie Chatwin

What is your favorite anecdote regarding witches? Do you feel like any portrayal in media is accurate? How do modern witches differ from those in the past?

Sarah Berman

First time question asker! What are some practices and traditions of witchcraft that you feel would be beneficial for everyone to try? What do you hope for the future of witchcraft?

Zuleika Pevec

FTQA: I'm only familiar with the concept of a "western" witch...what do witches look like/do/practice in eastern traditions? Do "all" cultures have some form of witch?

Kelli Brockington

Or have a carrot for a nose? (they put it there)

Isabelle Leclerc

I'd like to hear your thoughts on "witch trials", which were all too evidently being used to persecute women who did not conform to societies' oppressive norms at the time. How do you feel this history has shaped the public's perception of people who practice witchcraft?

Natalie Rousseau

Is there any actual evidence of magical intent shifting well.. anything? What is it that calms me when I meditate and connect with the world/universe around me? When I was in middle school (height of Wiccans inspired by The Craft), I swore it was the goddess. Thoughts?

Natalie Rousseau

Also, I cannot remember the author of like 10,000 how to be Wiccan books from the early aughts.

Asia Matthews

Was the tall-black-hat-broom-stick-nose-wart trope just another example of marketing created by The Man or The Church to discredit women? Perhaps women with knowledge of medicine? Also, how do I find more witches to hang with?

Audrey Ayers

Is it a coincidence that witch rhymes with bitch? Who named witches, was it the women or their oppressors?

Kendall M

Who is the best historical witch and why is it Medea?

Mark Rovner

Are witches born or made?

Dan Winters (DanRWin)

So glad you are doing better! Question about witches, when did people start calling themselves witches? Like, were there people who called themselves witches before/during the early modern witch trials, or did that become an identity once it was an established religion? In other words, did it become an identity as a reclaiming of a word that has been used to harm the continued practice of pagan rituals and medicine, or was it an identity before that?

Anastasia Press

There seems to be a surge of folks embracing witchcraft and more nature-based spirituality in recent years. Is it just more visible to me now, or is the number of people practicing witchcraft actually increasing? If so, why do you think that is?

Pseudonym Jones IV

I'm out of date... What is the current state of pagan intersectionality?

Megan Lynch

As an undergrad I took an Anthropology of Religion course where the instructure talked about the pre-conditions for witch hunts to arise (this wasn't just about Salem, but included cultures in Africa and Southeast Asia. If you have access to that kind of -ologist, I'd love to hear again what those pre-conditions were.

Terena

I learned that you honor the element of Earth by facing East but a good friend was taught that East is Air. We’re both Western Wiccans and both have witches in our families, so why the difference? Can you explain more about Western traditions please? And to Ally, I’m so happy you’re feeling better!!!!!

Deke Cisco

I've heard different color candles have different meanings in witch culture. Is this true? Also, do you have to be born into a witch family to become a witch?

corvidthey

Can you talk about the crossover of the fear of witches and anti-Semitism and where that comes from?

Mandy Hobson

What is the difference between Witchcraft, Wicca, and Paganism?

Figment

alie, i'm so glad you're feeling better! please do not ever think you can't take time off for yourself and your family!! my question for your guest is, in your experience is there such a thing as magic? are there actually spells to be cast (good or bad) or is it all hollywood and folklore? i do believe in spirits, not ghosts necessarily, but maybe call them angels and demons, whatever. do witches have anything to do with them? are there any accurate depictions of witches in film or television? also, i am very sorry and apologize on behalf of all christian believers if you've been treated unkindly by us. thank you for sharing your life and experience with the pod world!

Dave Cannon

Virgin blood, sexless or never been used in a ritual?

Tiane Scott

What cultural factors do you think have contributed to the recent resurgence of witchcraft/witchy esthetics among femmes and how widespread has that resurgence been/where did it never really go away? Glad you're feeling better Alie!

Emily Staw-fur

Are there any major historical events that are actually strongly intertwined with witches but the well known version of the story doesn't include the role of witches?

Hannah Kastoryano-Hudson

How do you become a witchologist? What part of being a witch? Religion? Magic? Both?

Emily Staw-fur

Is it a coincidence that witch and bitch rhyme? 😂 they both can have negative connotations, but also are both words that have seemingly been reclaimed to be more positive

Emily Staw-fur

It's pretty well known that the idea of witches through history did not have a good reputation. But it seems like within the past few years a witch community has started emerging on the Internet and people seem to be more interested in it. Can you comment on this? Is this actually the case or just my misinformed perception? Has this been beneficial for anyone?

Audrey

When did witches become trendy? Like when did we collectively decide that witches were really cool(I’m part of the “we”)

Shelby Reardon

Via my friend Mackenzie: Were witches particular to certain types of ink to write their spells in? I think I watched a show where different types of ink were more powerful and blood was used sometimes.

Jess Bauzá de García

Curious what type of witch is going to be on. I’m a witch (bruje) and I’m curious if this witchologist is more of an anthropologist or if they teach baby witches about different types of practice. If they teach about practice I’d love if you could ask how they teach about closed practices and mitigate the colonizing mindset amongst outside practitioners.

Kathryn Knopinski

Do all cultures have witches? How do witches, witchcraft, and acceptance of witches vary around the world?

Chase Penix

Are there different “denominations”? Is witchcraft a religion unto itself, or is it always apart of another system of belief? Sorry, very limited frame of reference and vocab. Sheltered childhood…

Kathryn Knopinski

(If you use this the last name is no-PIN-ski.) ((Glad you took a break and are feeling better.))

Kimberly R

I am so glad you took time for you. Protect yourself and your time. ❤️

Melissa Croce

welcome back!! i hope you had a fantastic rest ☺️ my question is: symbols associated with the western concept of witches include black cats, pointy cats, broomsticks, etc. what symbols are witches from other cultures associated with?

Saira (‘Sarah’) Manns

What are your thoughts on Wicked and the origin story of the good and bad witches

Saira (‘Sarah’) Manns

What are your favourite/least favourite representations of witches in cultural media

Kathleen Deyling

I came up in the Starhawk early days, and my understanding was that “magic” was bending energy/influencing via focus, will, and practice; rather than transforming matter a la Harry Potter. Are there witch disciples that maintain their craft is actual magic; and if so, what proof do they assert?

Ted Hamilton

What's the deal with magic broom sticks?

Ted Hamilton

Also how much of what we associate with magic and witches is connected to some kind of hallucinogenic medicine (aka potions)?

Mariana Alvarez

First time question asker! I grew up in the bible belt in the south and was taught that witches know things because they can talk to demons. Where did that idea even come from and what do witches think about that? How do they know things about us that they couldn't possibly know? Thank you, and so glad you were able to rest. Lot of love, -M

FondoDondo35

Hurray for Wardly, so glad you are back. Not sure where my weeks would be without your Howdy boy and Fuck yeah cheery side bon mots.

Robin F.

Scott Cunningham?

EdNoGG

What did you think of American Horror Story: Coven? Is Stevie Nicks really a White Witch? Are Voodoo Priestess and Witches really beefing? 😂

Heather Livingston

So glad you’re feeling better! What are some of the oldest descriptions and/or depictions of witches in literature and art? Does the association with brooms go back further than the 17th century? Also, I’d love to hear about non-Europeanesque witches past and present. Thank you!

Doug Stewart

Two questions: 1. Are we a coven because I really want the answer to be yes. 2. What are some of your favorite mythological witches?

Hope J 🏳️‍🌈

What is your favorite and least favorite book that contains witches in it? What do you consider to be good witch representation in fictional literature?

Michelle LF

Why are witches female? & Are there male or gender less witches? Glad you’re back Dadward 💖

Megan Conrow

Where did the idea of familiars come from, and why are they so often cats (especially black cats)? Can my black cat be my familiar?

TJ Mckenna

Soooo happy you’re back Alie!!! You deserved the rest!! A few questions… -Who was the first witch and what could she do? -Can she delve into Baba Yaga?? -Is there any history of the LGBTQ+ community in relation to witchcraft??? -Are the words bitch and witch related in some way???? the vibes overlap-ish… -CRYSTALS! CRYSTALS EVERYWHERE WHY?????

Matt Ceccato

Did Shakespeare get witches right in “MacBeth?” And it’s great you’re back, pod dad!

Abby Mandris

Not sure the best way to phrase this so if anyone can help out please do: I am an upper middle class white American who has recently found a community with "witches." What are the cultural implications of this newer identity people like me should be aware of and what appropriation should be respectfully avoided (for example, burning sage as it is a closed practice in some Indigenous cultures, use of the "G" word as it is a slur historically used against Romani people...etc")

Sleepy Frog Lauren

So glad you’re back and feeling better! Where did the schism occur where women went from being ‘wise women’ and healers of a group of people to witches? Was it with the rise and spread of Christianity?

Mx. Artemisia

Is the history of beer being related to witchcraft true? (the broom being a symbol of a brewery and beer being a potion and cats warding off mice that would eat the grain)

Dr. Micro

I'm so glad you're feeling better! I know we've all been worried about you. Here's my question: How can you quietly practice witchcraft and identify as a witch without it becoming a big deal at work? It is a religion and religious people wear crosses or Stars of David all the time, but there's such a huge cultural taboo about wearing pentacles or crystals and quietly identifying as a witch.

Brandon Oram

So glad you are feeling better! We were wondering why the stereotypical witch has a mole? Where did that come from?

Kavelizrd

What animals can be familiars? What is the actual purpose of a familiar?

Fiorelily

No question for the ologist. But I am super happy you're feeling better Dadward!! We all sincerely want you to continue existing as a healthy friend-shaped human!

Jenny Lowe Rhodes

Yay! Happy you’re back, Dad. I wonder if the oologist has thoughts about Agnes Nutter blowing up her town in the Good Omens show or about her descendent Anathema Device

Jason Yuan

How similar are witches in different cultures? Did Alie Ward heal from a deal she made with a witch?

Amber Uhlhorn

I don't really have a question, just super excited about this ology!!! Also, so glad you're back ❤️

rikspieks

how did the teenage witch evolve in pop culture? And what criticism does exist against the current witch trend (more people interested in witchcraft, crystals etc.)?? Are there problematic streams or groups that identify with witchcraft? are there practices, you don't believe in? Ftqa 🌈

Melanie Metzger

How many cultures/religions/belief systems have a witch or witch like entity that they identify and how many actually look upon them favorably?

Kai

What is your favorite example of witchcraft in history or mythology?

Samantha McGarrigle

How do witches in history compare to the modern day concept of a witch?

Alexandra Rambo

As a life long reader of sci/fi and fantasy, I’ve always loved the idea of having powers and being intune with something others aren’t…as much as that still hits home about a love for witchyness, I’ve started to wonder about the correlation between wanting to be a witch and being the first daughter and also wanting powers/magic when in traumatic/ unstable situations as a child. Mine’s a pie chart that’s all the same flavor. Thanks, love you dad Ward. I’ve always thought of you as the big sister I never had.

William Ganschinietz

How does the Wiccan beliefs differ from the other religions?

megs

Favourite book for beginner practical magics?!

Sandy Green

When and how did women start reclaiming the concept of witch from the negative patriarchal view (ie the witch hunts)

Madeline DLC

Glad to know you’re better, remember to take time for yourself! As for the question, can you give me the juicy hot gossip on Heinrich Kramer writing the malleus maleficarum “the witches hammer” after losing his court battle with Helena Scheuberin?

Sandy Green

I recently saw this type of question phrased as ‘appreciation vs appropriation’. Great question that I’m always trying to think about as well

Kristi Hager

Pretty sure that's a yes, but I'm curious what examples can be shared.

Anne Jewett

Welcome back!!! What fun topic! I’ve been an out proud practicing eclectic Goddess worshiper / Priestess / Witch for over 30 years. How has your practice changed as you aged? I’m having trouble wanting to go big public rituals anymore. My practice is getting quieter and more personal. Any wisdom on continuing your practice as the energy wane ( note: I’m going through treatment for myeloma cancer and on dialysis which also is effecting my practice)

Deanna DePietro

howdy yay Allie so glad to have you back and healthy/rested! Ok questions- 1) witches flying on broomsticks- why/how did that come to be the iconic pairing? 2) your favorite witch depicted in tv/film, old or new?

Dylan Manthei

Something for you to lookup: NECROPANTS. Pants made from human skin. They are part of Icelandic witchcraft history and a fascinating read. Don't let some of those sensational 'news' sites fool you though, I've seen the display in the museum myself and they appear to be a rubber mockup. I'm cool with that, like, super cool. Glad, is more like it. So while the artifact on display may not be real, the stories and lore are really interesting. My 2 cents? Before we had so many ways to entertain ourselves these kinds of things were just incredible story-telling and would spread like wildfire if the story was bizarre enough. I don't think a 'pair' ever existed, or at least that's what I'm going with.

Earl of Greymalkin

1) Which witch is the witchiest? 2) Where do witchy stereotypes come from? Is part of it really from women who brewed beer back in the day? Were there witch-like archetypes prior to that? Why specifically black cats? 3) Any book recommendations for witchy fiction? 4) How do feminists interact with witchy concepts currently and historically? Are there better/worse or more/less useful interpretations people use to support variations of feminism? 5) Does the crazy cat lady stereotype derive from witches at all? (Do you have cats? What are their names? Can I see pictures?) 6) Are there any fun witchy internet trends going around right now? 7) What would you recommend people do to explore witchcraft during Spooktober while avoiding capitalist traps? 8) How does European-derived witchcraft interact with other witchcrafts around the world?

Karen Tam

Is there any overlap in witchology and astrology/zodiac signs?

Isabelle Newman

FTQA What are some concoctions (potions) we can make from things in our gardens for medicinal purposes? Teas, balms etc. Is this in the witching wheelhouse??

Isabelle Newman

FTQA Where does the witch broom stereotype come from?

Isabelle Newman

How does one become a witch or does witchcraft find the person?

Edward Mills

First time question asker here: Knowing that witches aren’t just “female wizards” as JK Rowling led us to believe, what are the main differences between a witch and a wizard, or other magic people in folklore?

Marisa

Is there any disagreement that Stevie Nicks is, in fact, a witch (in the best possible way)?

Pacheecha

First off, I'd like to say that I never understood the fantasy of being the princess when there's also the option of being a badass independent witch! I'm curious if there's some kind of overlap where the male medicine doctors took over what used to be healing that women (and men) did, so they ended up needing to demonize them in order to capitalize on the business. Maybe I'm grasping at straws, but it seems like a good theory.

Stephen Lickman

No questions. Just wanted to say, as someone who is married to a witch, that witches are some of the most generous and empathetic people you will ever meet. Screw bigots.

King Donna

Can we all be witches? Where do we get started? I'm in need of some hexes

Tom Boodry

Where did the pointy hat thing come from? Is there a reason that is associated with witches?

Mushroom Screams

What actually is witchcraft, especially in ye olden times? Like were there people who actually called themselves witches or was it just a term used by the people who wanted to burn other people? If so, what did they do that made them witches? Also, what’s the difference between olden times witches and modern ones?

Shannon O'Grady

WELCOME BACK PODDAD! We missed you but hope you take regularly scheduled breaks and stay healthy!!!!!!!

Megh Knappenberger

FTQA. Glad to have you back ❤️ Did the word and concept of a “witch” come from the church, as a way of upholding the patriarchy and discouraging women from doing stuff other than babies and house? If so, when? Was there a moment in history before the witch thing when there were women in charge and generally kicking bunz that prompted this need to squelch it? Or was that never.

Scott Hanley

🧙‍♀️. No witch questions just that witch emoji. I’m very glad to hear you got well deserved rest and recouperation. Stay healthy stay safe. ❤️

glen oliff

Does any record exist of the folks that were affected during the Salem witch trials?

Britt Kline

3) A Discovery of Witches series! SO GOOD. The show was good, too, but as usual: BOOKS IS BEST📚 🖤

Britt Kline

1.) the answer *has* to be yes!

AussieColin

There seems to be a common belief that the bible's "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" was the result of a mistranslation where the old word for "well poisoner" ended up as "witch". Any truth in it?

Abraham Livingston

What is up with the random spells in bottles thrown out to sea?

Elyce

FTQA- Why are witches association to cats? Black cats in particular 🐈‍⬛

Lorri Fishman

How did witches get associated with brooms and riding them?

How much of the power of witchcraft comes from: crystals, feathers, candles etc. vs Intention? Does the inner power of the witch hold more sway than the innate nature of the items?

Nathan Marion

Why are witches generally seen to be women?

What are the differences between white and black magic? How has witchcraft existed amongst different cultures around the world for centuries? Love you dadward and witchologist <3

Witches…wiccans…pagans (oh my); what’s the difference?

Janika Mäki

FTQA - Witchy things are a taboo in Christianity circles but how are these kind of individuals treated in other cultures with different belief systems? (Glad to hear you are doing better, Alie 🖤)

Yngvi

What are the most sinister books ever written on this topic, except Malleus maleficarum?

Yngvi

Why do we have two different depictions of witch in cinematography (beautiful women vs. old hags with warts on big noses)

Yngvi

Warlock and Witcher - is there a difference?

Yngvi

Maybe Stevie is the guest being interviewed for the podcast 🤞🏼

Ange Percy

When I'm making something for a friend I feel like if I'm thinking kind thoughts about them then the thing I make (even a cup of tea) will be good for them. Is that in any way similar to spell casting?

BatRachy

THIS IS SICH AN EXCITING OLOGY!! What's your opinion on the phrase "we are the granddaughters of witches you couldn't burn"? (Personally, while I understand how it reflects the continued misogyny & persecution especially around those who don't follow what others see as a "normal" lifestyle, I feel like it allows more space for an "us & them" witch-hunt stance, instead of allowing people to live peacefully and the misogynists be dealt with appropriately. Also, factually incorrect in the UK cos we didn't do burnings iirc). Aaaalllways intrigued to hear professional opinions on this thought, please and thank you.

Samantha

What’s the earliest written or visual account of a witch that we know of?

Splophie

Hey Allie! I'm super excited about this episode and I really love ologies! Ive been listening to all the old episodes since I've newly found you and nothing makes the monotony of my data entry work better than you and your awesome humor and cool topics!! Anyways my question (I'm new at this), I want to know if tarot decks can have personality and what to do if your deck seems to be a sarcastic asshole....asking for a friend?

Splophie

I'd also like to know if having a shrine but dedicated to no deity in particular can draw someone in or it is better to not have anything set up until you know who it's for?

Nick A

What makes someone a witch rather than just a magic user?

Alexandre Catulle

Welcome back Dad. Happy you feel better🫶 Witches : can't avoid asking about feminism on this one. Are witches the first feminist? And what does it says that Catholic priest burned them?

BatRachy

And something I realised, for me (37 y.o. British person, living a somewhat alternative lifestyle), any question I had was around the witch hunts/trials which still centres the persecutors rather than the witches themselves as whole people. This is certainly something I want to work on flipping round, but made me wonder how commonly you find this? And how hard is it to keep witches centred, rather than solely their methodical persecution across the world and through the years?

Don Elliot

Are you from the west or east?

Mariko

I'm soooo late to the party -- I just learned about Ologies and have been bingeing hard. Thank you for taking time for yourself, Alie! Mainstream US culture has historically painted witches as scary, but I don't really understand why that persists. I'd love to know about communities (or historical eras) where witches are revered instead of feared. (Or both revered and feared? Refeared?)

Lucas waterbody

Excitement!!!!! I always hear about witches in the middle ages as being called witches by others, but were there also groups of people back then that called themselves witches?

Aurel Chaoul Pelleg

Historical truth or myth that the last which was burned in the Netherlands?

Naar

WITCHES ACROSS THE WORLD WITCHCRAFT IN ACROSS ASIA (arabic countries i.e, west/southwest asia, south asia, central asia i.e., afghanistan/tajikistan etc, as well as east and south east asia) AND WITCHCRAFT ACROSS AFRICA AND SOUTH AMERICA would just love to know the history of the term and also practices of the actual witchcraft in non white countries :) speaking as an arabic witch with no access to the witchy history of my people xx

theWhollyGhost

Do you have a favourite portrayal of a witch or witches in media? Are there any books/movies/series that get it right, or any that are just terrible?

Olivia Eliasson

Could you tell me of a time where you felt speechless about something happening and reaffirmed your beliefs?

SammmN

Please tell me what path I need to get on to obtain a witch lifestyle

SammmN

And super excited to see you back! Sending the best wishes and hoping your time off was spent well!!!

Olga Kolesnikova

I have so many questions! I'll restrain myself to just one. We associate witches with magic, but do witches actually have anything to do with magic in the fantastical sense?

Sarah McLaren

We all know examples of witches in history and media where they have been feared/hunted but what about cultures, historic and present day where they have been accepted? I'm fascinated by the idea of the every day witch and traditions people have which are likely rooted in witch practice.

Sarah McLaren

While many material artifacts don't survive the tests of time what is your favourite that you have come across?

Marlis Cheeseophile

"Witch Lit?" "Witch Flicks?" Favorite and least favorite depictions of witches in fiction and on film... and why? So curious to know what a witch thinks about historical stereotypes and assumptions. Which witches do you embrace, which witches are harmful bitches? What do you think our witches say about our views of women in any given era? Crony, boney hags, sexy temptresses with tresses and spunky nose wrinklers disrupting the status quo...

Marlis Cheeseophile

Also, what might today's witch's day-to-day look like? What's in practice on the dailey?

Erik K

Where did the cliche portrayals of modern witches come from, such as the black cat and pointed at. Also why flying brooms?

Adam Foote

I second every question about witch iconography. Why pointed hats? Also I'm thinking about all the other weird depictions in fiction that seem completely unrelated except for the word "Witch" being used. Where did the Wizard of Oz's Wicked Witch's green skin and water allergy come from? In Hansel and Gretel, is that a witch trying to eat children? Why? Is that basically the same as the Sanderson sisters in Hocus Pocus? Finally, an overall question: What makes a fictional character a "Witch" rather than a "Sorceress" or "Demon" or other sort of magic user?

Lyssa Mercier

Alie, I'm so glad you are back and feeling better 💖 and as a witch myself, I could not be more excited for this episode! I would love to hear their thoughts on "witchy things" like cystals, spell books and tarot becoming more mainstream. How much of it a positive reclaiming of power and tradition vs capitalism trying to coopt something it shouldn't (ie. cultural appropriation, unethical mining and harvesting, etc)? I'm also very interested to hear about the evolution of magical/nature based practices.

Mushroom Morgan

I learned in Bavaria that much of the witch iconography came from beer-making buns (pointed hats similar to the head coverings, cats to keep critters away from hops, large cauldrons of bubbling substance) is there any truth to this?

Mushroom Morgan

How much of modern witchcraft/"Wicca" is stolen from traditional Jewish practices? I've heard a lot from Jewish creators that a lot of what's marketed as witchy things today are appropriated from Judaism

Samantha Gorelick

I once read a book called Witches, Midwives, and Nurses. If I recall correctly, it claims that women who were healthcare practitioners back in the day were deemed witches when men wanted them excluded from the modern medical field. I'm sure there is way more witch history from before this went down, but were witches just healthcare workers?

Kiirsten May

Is witchiness a hereditary trait that can be passed on? And does it follow the matriarchal line? Seems to me that folks with intuitive abilities who can read energy often have an aunt with the same gifts.

octavi rodriguez

Agree with the theory. Here in Catalonia forest they were called "Remeieres" (the one that provides remedies for healing). Kind of a healer. They were prosecuted as well all over Europe.

Maddy B

I have the same question!! Both of my grandmothers were said to be witches, and my mom believes that I have inherited "the gift" of intuition from them. One of them cast spells and would have called herself a practicing witch, while the other (my mom's mom) didn't practice anything, but was very intuitive and could sense energies from spirits/ghosts/other worlds. Are there any other stories of witchiness being passed down a matrilineal line?

Max G

I know a lot of witch stereotypes come from antisemitic ideas of Jewish women, who were often accused of witchcraft for practicing Judaism and/or existing outside of Christian hegemonic ideas of womanhood; are there any ways that traditional Jewish knowledge or practices show up in ideas of witchcraft that most people might not realize? Also, SO glad you’re doing better Alie ❤️ please don’t hesitate to take a break again if you need

Cole Dietrich

What is the intersection of Witchology and queerness?

Haley K.

So glad you took that time!! Real basic question, but can you talk about the difference between witchcraft as a practice vs the various religions that are considered “witchy” like wicca, shamanism, norse peganism, christian witchcraft, etc.

tamalamb

so glad you took the time dad! wondering what the global reach of witches are? what are the major differences of north american witchery vs. european, african, or asian, south asian or south american? are there common elements that are widespread that categorize witches? what are the largest differences or largest groupings of witches globally? Very excited about this ologies!!!

Dara

Please include/unpack a decolonial / non-Eurocentric perspective on the history of witches and witchcraft and depictions / folklore about witches!! Where does the current contemporary Western idea of "a witch" come from? (I imagine it has roots in lots of different depictions of witches from various cultures and eras?)

BadWolf1701

From the little i know women were often healers and when they did something people didn't understand or healed someone instead of having the church do an exorcism they were often labelled as being a witch or in league with the Devil

BadWolf1701

Curious what the various terms or labels used for women as "Witches" over time and througout various cultures.

BadWolf1701

Has there ever been a place where they haven't been persecuted but rather celebrated?

Mattea Orr

Oh, yes, I would also love to know this as those same traits are all over my mother's side of the family.

sarah de jesus

Hi dad i missed you🥹 can we ask about witches using their orgasms for spells? The history of sexuality and women and the accusations of sexually realized women being witches “back in the day”? i don’t know if someone asked this already.

joesyourmom

Yes! or more broadly any lifestyle/ way of being that is against a cis, straight, capitalist, patriarchal system ?

Jani Rounds

Happy you are back! And also happy you are rested! Are there positive (historical) representations of witches? Also +17 to question about other cultures concepts of witches!

Rachel Waugh

Hi Alie, First time question asker here, but long-time follower!!! Can we talk about witches and the history of brewing alcohol?

Elizabeth Edwards

Have you listened to the BBC podcast Witch and isn't it wonderful?

Lee L

Which TV shows or movies have the best depiction of witches? And what’s the worst?

Kristin 🦦

Does your guest have a favorite popular media portrayal of witchcraft/witches and why? Knowing a bit about the Western European and early US history around witches and witchcraft, are there witchy elements in all or most cultures and have any managed to retain or recapture the traditional place for such beliefs and practices from the effects of colonization?

Yves Hebert

Great to know that your health and life balance are now OK ! Suggestion in Spain 60,000 Galgos and Galgas are abandoned every year after the hunting season and it would be interested if you can do an episode on that barbaric situation? I have my daughter Lisa-Laurie who could discuss the situation and connect you with the right people to maybe help resolve that situation! Let me know ! Yves

joesyourmom

Are there any connections between early Puritan's views of wilderness and who was deemed as witches? I.e. an herbalist spending more time in the woods as opposed to say in a church may have been believed to be less trust worthy?

Johanna Burr

Hi! First time question asker here. I know that some ancient herbal remedies had scientific validity to them, so was there any scientific basis for love potions and/or romantic/sexual rituals concocted throughout the ages? Like, perhaps what these rituals were really doing was relaxing the imbiber, or making them hallucinate, or making them hornier. Or was it just all a placebo?

Wes Darou

My wife is a witch (literally). How do I protect myself?

Wes Darou

Male witches put me off. Why?

Wes Darou

Some people claiming to be witches strike me as fake and profiting. How do I tell the real ones from the phonies ?

Katherine

During the witch trials throughout European history, was there ever any actual evidence of covens (true witchcraft or magicke practices) or was this a purely a means of persecuting the marginalized (midwives, spinsters, etc).

BeckytheSassySeagrassScientist

I am so interested in the evolution of witchcraft from ye olde pagan religions and folklore etc to modern day crystal girlies (and also religious wiccans). Tell me your secrets!

BeckytheSassySeagrassScientist

Why do witchcraft appeal to women so much that teenage me would dance around bonfires, hold seances and read each other's palms feeling so special and free... Even as a non believint Catholic?

Carole Gjertson

Welcome back! What is the difference between Wiccan and Witchcraft?

Sarah Walton

How do we deal with the neo-nazi-neo-pagan problem???

What is the best portrayal of a witch in pop culture?

Lily

How many cultures mention witches/have witches or witchcraft? I’m really curious to learn more about witches across different cultures.

Lily

What makes a witch a witch?

Lily

Is being a witch different from being Wiccan?

Krysten

First time question asker! Do witches originate in Celtic rituals like Halloween does? Or are they older/ more widely spread than that?

Dana Powell Russell

As a direct descendant of one of the women wrongfully executed at Salem (8th great-grandma Mary Towne Estey), two questions regularly come to mind. Which makes me wonder why I haven't just Googled them, but here's the perfect forum so... 1) When did the term "witch hunt" come into popular use in politics? The other day I heard a non-US politician use it, too. And 2) How many of us Salem witch descendants do we estimate are out there?

Ariana Rose

FTQA: Can you talk about the intersection between witchcraft, spirituality, and personal reflection/mediation? As a kid I identified as a witch, but drifted away from any formal religion as I got older. Now, as an almost 30 year old, I find myself drawn to things like Tarot and rituals as a way to process my complex emotions and experiences, while still trusting in the laws of physics, human psychology, and the peer review process.

Mary of the Grapefruit

As a brand new garden witch, I want to grow some herbs that help with healing, like how it was done in the past. Are there better/qualified places to get seeds? Especially toale sure I am growing things for like a salve?

Sadie Vipond

How to have the science-y witchy vibe?? I feel like most science (especially biology) feels like magic (like POLLINATION and CELLULAR RESPIRATION and such) and I want to give off the biologist witch vibe

Sadie Vipond

Also the historical accusations of midwives being witches because they could ease the pain of childbirth? What's with that?

Allison Menard

Well I’m one! I’ve been diving deep into genealogy and have found that my ancestors include my 11th great grandmother Susannah Martin (executed), 11th great Uncle John Proctor (executed), and the Putnams (executors).

Allison Menard

First time question asker!! Was witchcraft historically associated with wizardry/sorcery, or was that only used more recently in media such as Harry Potter? Do you like Harry Potter?

Kieran H

Do people who practice modern witchcraft generally believe in magic/the supernatural or is it more of like the principal of the thing?

Julia Porter

First time question asker and baby witch!! What is your take on the empowerment that comes with reclaiming the word “witch”? For so long, it has held a negative connotation, especially for women, but now the modern witch wears it like a badge of honor. P.S. old joke of my youth from the back of a Laffy Taffy: what’s a witch’s favorite subject? …… Spelling

Margot Louis

Where did the idea that your first tarot deck must be given to you come from?

Teresa Wilson

Alie, so happy you are feeling better. You radiated in the latest Ology. Did Gerald Gardner create modern witchcraft i.e., make it up from bits and bobs of contemporary occultism and layer it on agrarian pagan practices?

Maggie E

Is becoming a witch a choice? Is it something you’re born with, or something I can practice and obtain? Or perhaps are you chosen in some way?

Caroline Wight

Favorite witch/witches from pop culture?

Ann Hanlin

Just thought of another question! How recently was the last “witch trial?” Like if a woman couldn’t get a credit card in the 70’s without her husbands permission I feel like there was definitely some town somewhere that ganged up on an old lady and accused her of being a witch. Just curious how much I need to watch my back in this day and age.

Holly Giorgio-Dundon

Tell the non-witches that it is pronounced “saa-wn” not “sam-hine”. Looking at you, western television.

Anika's Cat Arya

Two questions: 1) why are black cats associated with witches? 2) what are the ologist’s thoughts on social media influencer witches?

Keely Chavez

I refer to myself as a kitchen witch, but not a jack of all witch trades. Is it common to stick to a "specialty" or do you think all things witchy should be learned/practiced? Did you "come out" to your family? Is it more common to be a solitary practitioner or a coven witch? Hoping also to hear about familiars.

Caitlin Morrison

How does lore surrounding witches vary in different cultures around the world?

Matt Hirschl

Why are witches stereotypically female?

Kellee Toler

Welcome back Alie! So glad you're feeling better and you got the rest you needed. I want to know how much of what we now consider "witchy" (like herbal medicine, traditions, rituals, etc) were just common activities demonized in women, and how much of it is actually based in alternative spirituality?

Naomi Crawford

First time question asker! Who is your favourite Charmed sister and why is it Phoebe?

Jess Bauzá de García

OMG! I live near Salem and every year when I take my friends to visit we bring flowers for the memorials of those executed. I've literally left flowers for your great(x8) grandma! <3 That's such a crazy little coincidence

Jess Bauzá de García

Is there any particular piece of media or reason why in the past few years non-indigenous people have appropriated white sage and the practice of smudging?

Are there cultures around the world where witches are thought of as being mostly male?

Trevor Doty

Are there witches in middle eastern lore?

Trevor Doty

what are witches called in South America?

Trevor Doty

Are witches solitary creatures? Or do they run in packs?

Trevor Doty

for our witchologist: how do you feel about the movie Hansel and Gretel witch hunters?

Emma Fiori

Hello! Fellow witch here. How do you feel about the "umbrella term", Pagan? For decades I thought Pagan was the accepted term for all spiritualities that are generally nature based and most often polytheistic, and that all the hundreds or even thousands of versions (druid, reclaiming, wicca, voodoo, hoodoo, feri, etc) fell underneath it. I know that "witch" can be a controversial term and many Pagans don't like to be called witch. But then I heard a podcast that said that Pagan is a more specific term and that many people of this sort of spiritual persuasion are offended by the term Pagan. I've never seen or heard that opinion shared anywhere else, but it made me conscious of using the term that I used to feel so confident in. What do you think?

Emma Fiori

What are your favorite witchy podcasts, and can you reccomend any modern Pagan authors providing a fresh edge to the witchy literature?

Emma Fiori

Can you talk about the intersection between Paganism and science? I know pop culture has a history of incorrectly using quantum physics (or rather a 5th grade version of quantum physics) to "prove" many aspects and practices common to various Pagan sects. But I feel there is actually quite a lot of real alignment between the biology of living beings in a shared ecosystem and many spiritual beliefs. I am both a witch and a "hard-core" scientist, so I have spent most of my life balancing these two aspects of myself and trying to find the places where they coincide. I would love to hear what you think and have learned about this potential conflict.

Emma Fiori

That's me too! I embrace being a nerdy science witch and the acceptance that science is full of magic. I mean, if the conception, growth, and birth of thousands of healthy human babies (not to mention all the other animals) every day isn't magic then I don't know what is. The fact that our cells perform an endless procession of miracles without any intelligent directing and of the billion places that some part of that process could go wrong we somehow still manage to create perfectly healthy functional new humans the vast majority of the time - out of thin air (or thin liquids) - is literally the most magical thing I could possibly dream up. I think that any scientists who can't see the utter magic in all the biological, chemical, and physical process that make up life on earth are depriving themselves of the true joy in science!

Marco Santoro

Why do witches get this bad light, when did that start? I grew up having witches be the devil but I found out about Befana in Italian culture and she's so cool

Marco Santoro

What are some practices or events that you do throughout the year as a practicing witch?

Sandy Davis

oh wow! This has been my experience as well. I've become more internal about the practice and less external or showy.

Sriya Karra

First time question asker! How do you see the role of witchcraft evolving in today's modern world? And how might someone get started if they were interested in doing some casual everyday magic? ✨✨ Thanks! -Sriya (Sree-yuh)

Judy Lawler

How does a person come to know themselves as a witch? Are there occupations/professions, etc that seem to attract witches?

Fistful of Cheese

First time question asker! So excited! Questions for both Alie and the guest: Who is your favorite witch in fiction and why? Who is your favorite "real" (historical figure) witch, and why?

Nana From Canada

Please have your Witchologist explain to the public that Wiccans do NOT believe in the devil or hell. I get so tired of trying to explain this to people.

Erika

My teenage daughter is VERY excited about this Ology. She and her friends were interested in witchery starting in elementary school. (Of course, they are of the generation that literally learned to read by reading about Hogwarts School.)

Erika

My teenage daughter is hoping you’ll ask about love potions and other witching rites that influence romantic connection.

Brenna Pixley

What’s the REAL “flying ointment” recipes & procedure?!?

Melinda Geiser

Why is Samhein pronounced saw win? What are Samhein's origins and current practices and rituals around it?

Dylan V

How is Wicca related to the depictions of witches over the cauldron or to the more modern depictions of Sabrina the Teenage witch or Hermione Granger?

Kathryn

Do you know the purpose of a bruja disfiguring her imbunche (invunche)?

Steve Kelem

Why do most of the depictions of witches look like my elderly Jewish relatives from Eastern Europe, and the "good" people, like Cinderella, all have nubbins of a nose? Are those children's stories anti-semitic at their foundation?

tiny nature

How did the thing about witches having green skin get started?

Alyssa Ranker

(fiancé's question) Were men ever accused of witchcraft or sorcery? (mine) In lore, did a witch's magic come from within or did they have to use external power sources? Or did it depend on the culture doing the storytelling?

Tristin Berg

How did the stereotypical witch face begin? Green skin, big nose, warts, etc

Kathleen Sachs

What’s your favorite spell and why?

Kathleen Sachs

Which element—- air, fire, water, earth, or spirit— do you connect with the most and why?

Kathleen Sachs

Do you work with a deity? If so, which ones?

Kathleen Sachs

What branch of paganism do you connect with the most? Wicca? Druidry? Eclectic Witchcraft?

Kathleen Sachs

In what ways do you connect with your practice?

Kathleen Sachs

Do you feel like witchcraft and science are mutually exclusive? Or does the one help you connect with the other?

Aimee Bee

I cant wait for this one!! I’m a witch and come from a long line of Romani ancestry and also have psychic abilities.

Aimee Bee

I’m from a long line of Romani ancestry and I can say that the g word should not be used. I still hear many people staying “I got jipped/gyped off” but that is also offensive because it’s slang for Gypsy. Not saying you do this but whenever I tell people they’ve never made that correlation so I thought I’d put it here for education 🤗

Larissa Shaw

Ah!!! I asked for a witchology episode!!! I’m interested in all things Silvia Federici, who speaks in great length of the witch-hunts that sadly still exist today. The link between brewing beer and witches (there’s a really interesting link that I’m sure your witchologist will know all about!) The history of the pejorative word “gossip” is also a great topic to discuss when looking back into how the word changed during the European witch-hunts.

a.bear-den

The connection between herbalism and witchcraft? Were witches once respected as healers?

Kathleen Sachs

What is your favorite class to teach and why? Also, what is your favorite Sabbat and why?

Kathleen Sachs

Who was the teacher who inspired you the most? And what ancestors / might dead will you be recognizing at Samhain?

Hankie Mundane

Hedgewitches are often solitary/without covens. When I learned this, I felt like I’d found my type!! I do not enjoy group projects!!!
