**EDITED TO ADD WORM CARDS. Hell yeah.

Benthopelagic Nematodes: did you ever think you'd fall in love with deep sea worms? Me neither.

I absolutely loved making this episode, from the recording on Catalina Island to the research/writing to recording asides. Dr. Bik is so enthusiastic and personable and I hope you enjoyed this one. I know a lot of you submitted earthworm questions and tbh, I didn't know jack shit about nematodes vs. annelids so this just means we're going to have to cover MORE worms in the future.

Anyone follow this one up with the Planariology episode? If you hadn't heard it, Dr. Pagan is a real one and we love him, too: https://www.alieward.com/ologies/planariology

Okay, feel free to discuss the episode below! I love hearing reactions to it. Do you have a favorite worm?

Worms 4ev,

Wardpod

Ps: It really is so good to be back making new episodes; even Podgram Fancy Nancy (my mom) said I was sounding better than I have in a while. And this week we're recording THREE for Spooktober so it's a busy week back at the mic. All great ones.

Weird little mouths! Hairy skin tubes! Demon nematodes! Antarctic explorer and Nematologist Dr. Holly Bik charms us into loving deep sea (benthopelagic) worms in a way you never thought possible. We also cover tiny worm brains, the smell of Antarctic mud, first-generation Ph.Ds, the research workhor

OK can you clear up the confusion about beneficial vs invasive nematodes? I'm an avid gardener, and I can't seem to find any clarity on whether introducing nematodes to my garden might be beneficial (or disasterous!) Thanks.

Potato Puffer

Great episode! Dr. Bik’s passion and enthusiasm are contagious! I’m off to find some nemotodes to look at!

Todd Peterson

Well poo I didn't realize this was a discussion thread and not a call for questions. Also just got a new phone so I need to re-add all my pods. Looking forward to listening to this one!

Celiaxolotl

I’m so glad you’re feeling better Dad! This is such a phenomenal episode, and I’m really looking forward to the new Spooktober ones!

EricG

Great episode. I'm always captivated by the ways that Alie is able to tease out the science and the human beings behind the science. And of course, as usual, Alie's "asides" are spot on! Antarctica/mud/worms/electron microscopy...Wow.

Alie Ward

Good call. Just attached them and sent out an update to the post. HAVE A GANDER AURORA

Alie Ward

So sorry! But we have some great ones coming up!

Alie Ward

Crytobufonematology: the monster we didn't know we needed.

Jeremy Glover

I've been eeked out by and terrified of worms for all of my life but really enjoyed this episode! And glad that you're back but mostly glad that you were able to recover.

Hannah Gorrie

You sound rested and rejuvenated Dad Ward!!! Also my dog was just diagnosed with heartworm - despite last year's negative test and being on preventative, it's a whole thing - so it was good and squicky to learn a bit more about them!

Potato Puffer

Ohhh the worm cards are even better than I expected!

Unity

Take your win and careful to not get too far over those skis again poddad 😘✨🫶

Dave Cannon

Woah! Not what I googled. She's got them fancy worm cards.

Alie Ward

Oh noooo! So sorry the critter is going through that! Whats the prognosis?

Alie Ward

Hell yeah, and thank you for the reminder. <3 I am in a tug of war with duties vs. chillin' but luckily once I get through a few spooky interviews this week, I have a ton banked so I can get back to the couch.

Nick A

The vast majority of my exposure to nematodes before this was from ads for agriculture products on tv and radio which only spoke of them as a villainous drain on yields. These ones seem more fun

Unity

Ah yes…the old balance two step. You got this 🧘🏻‍♀️

Guido

Now that I've seen the cards, I think I love Poliwhirl the most

Jessica Rudd

Great episode - and the worm cards are even better than I imagined! I think my favourite worms are planarians (I was very much charmed by the planariology episode! Such fascinating creatures, and Dr. Pagán is so great). That being said, Dr. Bik’s enthusiasm and passion for nematodes was contagious, and I have since realized that probably all worms are my favourite worms.

EricG

I am so in love with the nematode whose grandma knitted a beautiful sweater to keep it warm!

Mark Rovner

I haven't listened yet but I feel certain there's gonna be some discussion of the dreaded Bobbit worm...at least i hope so.

wendy Forman

This was a fascinating episode. I learned so much and enjoyed learning it. You do sound well-rested--good!

Doug Paice

Loved the episode Dr Bik was fantastic, just delightful. I'm looking forward to relistening with my daughter. The was one thing I was waiting for: Dr Worm! (They might be Giants from "Severe Tire Damage") 😆

ScienceInTheArt

I was so glad you asked about ingestion of nematodes! I was wondering the whole time up till then. I’m still curious what happens if we salute swallow one. It must happen if they are in the water supply. Do we digest them without a problem?

Hannah Gorrie

Extremely positive! Treatment is a beast though, a full month on antibiotics, and then three shots in two months of meds that will make her feel like butthole 😞 but she's young and the infection is likely mild, so we'll get through it!

Susan G

The worm cards were even better than I imagined! My knowledge of nematodes has previously been restricted to those that infect cats.

Julia

Loved it so much! Now I want to go to Antarctica tho, seems expensive. Great.

Raphael Santore

It was a grand slam episode. Dr. Bik is amazing and Alie Ward brings the podcast to life so perfectly that my smile hurts from smiling. But then again, Alie brings every podcast to life.

Ann Marie Wierzbicki

At 70 years of life to have met your wonderfully bubbly totally inquisitive and brainy self here on the internet has been a true confirmation of why we should all not be afraid of our curiosity. Curiosity doesn't kill the cat it makes them exciting, healthy in spirit and one of the most entertaining types of creatures in the world.

Catherine Jordan

Ok worm cards surpassed my expectations and I’m so thankful you shared them! I wanted to seeeee so badly! Also thankful for your health. I look forward to every ep. Keep ‘em comin. But also keep taking care of you! 🩷

Amy Zucker Morgenstern

We NEED to hear from an earthworm Ologist. Would that be Annelidologist? Squirmologist?

Aimee Bee

Again… I’m so flabbergasted by your ability to make every freaking subject ferociously interesting! I have come to learn that subjects I think I don’t have any interest in, will soon become the most interesting thing I’ve ever heard just a few minutes into your podcast. Alie, how I wish you could clone yourself and teach to all the teachers out there who have no clue how to teach. As someone who has struggled with ADHD my whole life (undiagnosed for most my life) I think I could have excelled having teachers that were interesting, fun, inspiring, curious, excited, and interactive. Keep up the awesome fucking work!

Julia Smith

I just learned that most of North America's earthworms are invasive species, and I was like, what the heck?! What else don't I know?

Julia Smith

Loved this episode! If this becomes a Smologies, I highly recommend mentioning the children's book "The Wild Robot Protects," by Peter Brown, for how it introduces the dangers of deep-sea mining to kiddos. Also the picture book "Butt or Face?" for obvious reasons.

Richard Pruen

Awesome thank you, I always associate worms with parasites, but the free living ones are also pretty neat.

Scott Hanley

I hope this ologist graces her socials with her new photographic skills begun in Antarctica. Her IG is dormant since 2020.

Diane Heise

Yesterday I was caught talking to a wooly worm on my drive way. Neighbor thought I might be having a senior moment. I was just admiring it. Alice thank you for expanding my knowledge on all things ologies.

Diane Heise

Don’t you just hate auto correct

Britt Kline

OMG, the worm cards. THANK you for sharing them!! The Leia buns! The little red sensory thingies! The dopey smiles…Man. These are GREAT! So fascinating. And SO tiny!!! 🙌🪄 …Not so psyched about the worms in drinking water, though…? Wha? How do we know if that is happening in our waters?

Isabelle Newman

Such a cool episode and she’s the coolest! I hope she gets her deep sea adventure dream.

Fwaeldling

ohhh look at their gorgeous little bodies, this is art.. I did not know of such tiny art

Jason Minnich

Awesome episode, but I'm not sure I can pick a favorite worm. They are both pretty intense

Rage McMuffin

Marvelous as always! Also “motivated by injustice and spite” should 100% be added to the worm cards… and many vision boards

Emily Krieger

i knew i was going to like this one as soon as I heard you walk in and say something about being excited for worms and how that's rare and Dr. Bik said that's fucked up! lol

Pseudonym Jones IV

I have been terrified of nematodes since I learned about them in the late 1900s. Now, I'm terrified of them, but think they are somewhat cute. Also, I gotta get me some of that Ultra Repair Cream.

Megan

So I'm listening to this episode on a mini-road trip and when Alie mentions aptronyms... We have a local judge named John Judge. Amazing.
